One of the the new events in the 2002 Winter Olympics was the sport of the skeleton. Starting at the top of a steep icy track, a rider jumps onto a sled (known as a skeleton) and proceeds- belly down and head first- to slide down the track. The track has fifteen turns and drops 104m in elevation from top to bottom. (a) In the absence of nonconservative forces, such as friction and air resistance, what would be the speed of the rider at the bottom of the track? Assume that the speed of the rider at the beginning of the run is relatively small and can be ignored (b) In reality, the best riders reach the bottom with a speed of 38.8m/s (about 80hi/h) How much work is done on an 86kg rider and the skeleton by the nonconservative forces? I believe that we use W =(1/2 vf^2 + mghf) - (1/2mvi^2 + mghi) I think the masses cancels out algebraically but on the left side of th equation (m*g*d) is d the same as h? Is hf 0 or 104m? moreOpen Question: General Physics I hockey puck collision problem?
The drawing shows a collision between two pucks on an air-hockey table. Puck A has a mass of 0.023 kg and is moving along the x axis with a velocity of +5.5 m/s. It makes a collision with puck B, which has a mass of 0.043 kg and is initially at rest. The collision is not head-on. After the collision, the two pucks fly apart with the angles shown in the drawing. Find the final speed of puck A. I have a 2000 Hyundai Sonata with 116k miles on it. In December, with 109k miles on it, I noticed after coming to a complete stop after highway or driving for a while that RPM's would drop to about .5 RPM and car would rumble and pull a little for a second and then go back to the normal .75 RPM idle speed. Brought car to transmission place in December thinking perhaps a bad torque converter, they replaced fluid and filter, (which was replaced at also 50k and 85k) cleaned wiring harness and told me they think transmission just getting old and needs rebuild. After I picked car up from garage in December, transmission was slipping going into 3rd gear, and rough/jerking shifts which I had felt b4 garage but not as bad or forceful. Have been driving like this since December, and have found that I can avoid a slip into third gear by making a slight adjustment to how quickly I accelerate. Sometimes car drives great, sometimes its rough going into and out of gears. Check engine light has never illuminated, no codes and has never stalled when RPMs dip at stop. Car always drove well in 4th gear, except for past two days when I felt a kind of hesitation while in fourth gear that comes and goes quickly. After I stopped at a light, the RPM revved above 1 and was making a noise as if I were putting my foot on the gas in neutral. When light turned green, I tried to accelerate and it was hesitated and almost felt like a misfire but not. This all has never happened. I tried to drive home, and had to stop at another light where it did the same thing - revved about 1.5 RPM and felt like it was trying to accelerate by itself. The car jerked with my foot on the brakes. Finally got home, sat in driveway at idle, and was completely fine in normal idle speed. Please, if you have any ideas, please help! I've just about had it with this problem, and I'd really hate to bring it back to a transmission place and have them tell me it needs a rebuild when it may be something like the Mass air flow sensor or throttle position sensor. forgot to mention that when I start car up from cold, it revs around 1.5 RPM and can take up to 5 minutes to go to normal idle RPM level. Also, when I put car in drive from park, it goes almost immediately and I can't pick up any hesitation. also when ac is put on, car jerks and has like no power... when i tried to put ac on the other day on highway, it felt like it was hesitating again in fourth gear. don't know if this helps moreOpen Question: My Lexus starts and then cuts right back off. Any ideas to a resolution?
1992 lexus SC 300 starts and only runs for 3 to 8 seconds. I have replaced PCV valve, air filter, used a working mass air flow sensor, and replaced fuel filter. The car ran great for about three days after replacing fuel filter but now it's doing the same thing. Let me mention that this happened after I purchased what I believe was watered down Premium gas from the gas station. I also put in some water remover in my tank, sta-bil, and seafoam and nothing has worked so far. moreOpen Question: Does the Mormon choir sound more like they are singing hymns or a political message?

The Truth About Butterflies: I'm writing, Intimidated by the blankness of my page and trying not to show it, Pen etching deep grooves in my paper, Mechanical letters looping, Forming dry words, Dry words congealing, Lumping together into cliche sentences, Meaningless. I'm trying to be deep, Looking for inspiration where there is none, Lost in the labyrinth of my own mind, Searching beneath the surface for hidden brilliance, Finding only useless anxieties, Trap doors, Pessimistic thoughts, Blunt corners, Dead Ends. And that's when I see the butterfly, Lovely even from this distance, Fluttering erratically on the edge of my vision, Poetry in motion, Colors radiant, Contrasting and harmonizing in unison with the pastel sky, A symbol of change and all things beautiful. It's weaving a path through the air now, Closer and closer, Coming to rest on a branch, Not three feet away, Separated only by a thin pane of glass, So close, I can see it in all of its exquisite, horrid detail, I realize my mistake but it's too late, I can't draw my gaze away, I'm seeing the truth for what it is. Bright scales clinging loosely to gossamer wings, Tattooed patterns designed to distract From the mass of spindly legs, Perfectly still, Too brittle, Too freely jointed, Fine hairs bristling independently, Standing on end, Tasting the air, Distinguishing temperature From pressure From direction, The antenna waving lazily, Fragile bundles of nerves, Quivering at the slightest sound, Woven intricately together, Vibrating almost imperceptibly, On the verge of unraveling, The proboscis dripping nectar, Lifeblood, sickly sweet, Its tip pulsing, throbbing, The dead eyes, useless, Pools of liquid blackness, Held together only by gravity, Glinting, uncomprehending... The butterfly. It's innocently menacing A harmless parasite, At odds with itself, A falsehood, A lie, An overgrown fly in disguise... Now I know the truth about butterflies. moreOpen Question: Calculate speed, distance and length.?

Ugh where do I begin? I was in a relationship for over 4 yrs and we had our ups and downs, just like every relationship but it just seemed that everytime we tried to make a positive step towards our future she took it 2 steps back. The reason why we broke was because she I noticed that she was distant and she kept talking about a "Friend" of hers more fequently So I asked if she had feelings for him and she confirmed that she did. A year ago we had a really bad break-up. She would keep breaking up with me because she was "unhappy" and the last break I found out she sleptwith another man. It seemed that she manipulated the relationship because she was afraid of commitment and she did not want to have a "Title" but said she only wanted to be with me and not date other people. So when I found out about this, and according to her friends there were other guys, which she denies it. So I took everything from her that so cherished so dearly. Alot of it were gifts that she accumulated from me over the years. So basically this act would've forced 2 people to move on with their lives. My father was suffering from Cancer during the same time this was going on and I guess I used that anger towards her because the one person I needed to be there was not. During that time I did alot of trash talking in regards to her appearance and her flaws. I know it was wrong and childish but I just needed to focus on all the bad in order to move on. People say alot of mean things when they are hurt and lash out. Well she found out my dad passed away and she was there for me and we tried to reconcile. That lasted for 3 months and she broke things off again for the same reason, she was unhappy. She got was at a party and someone stole her Ipod and she sent a mass text and I was one of the recipients so of course I replied and asked if she was ok. We tried yet again to reconcile. Things were going great until she started to hanging out with the same group of girls that aired out her dirty laundry and to save their own asses they told her all the mean things that I was saying. It's funny that she is still BFF with the same girl that first aired out her secrets. The thing is that her friend was the one that came forth with what she was doing. It was not like I went looking for answers just needed a mutual friend to talk to. So that put a bigger strain on our relationship but we tried to work things out. During our break she met someone that fell for her as she did him. She broke things off with him to give us another chance but her feelings never left. I broke things off with her because how could she and I continue when she has feelings for someone else?? IDK i guess i just feel guilty for breaking up with her but quite honestly it seemed that she stopped trying and i was her "Safety Blanket" She said that she loved me but how what kind of person would do these things to someone they "love"? I know what the answers are going to be but I guess I just need some unbiased opinions cause everyone dear to me tells me to move on. I know the reason why she stayed tho. I gave her anything and everything she needed or wanted so why would she walk away from that, even if her heart wasn't in it anymore? moreResolved Question: physics 101 question!! help needed!!!?

Why are many people obsessed with wearing, carrying and using designer label products, such as those from Louis Vuitton, Nike, etc. while being reasonably aware that they're mass produced through exploitation, at a fraction of the price they're sold at in developed countries? Alot of people sprout hot air about ending exploitation, of workers, the environment, of developing nations, yet we all know that it is driven solely be demand. If people stopped buying into it, it would stop. I wear no designer brands, and only use a few brand name products mostly electronics because there's not much alternative. I just don't see what people get out of wearing them, spending months of their own wages which would feed a small country over a lifetime, that they can ill afford to spend. Thanks for your answers so far everyone. Good points. @Sasha: No, I know you don't mean to be sexist. It was actually seeing girls use of brands that led me to ask this question. It just seems so bad to me, that you get young morons dressed "to the nines" in branded gear but they haven't a clue where it comes from or how people suffered to make it for a fraction of the price it sold for. It's enough to turn you into a committed Communist. I agree its very hard to buy clothes and other items ethically but I try to do it from places like the Body Shop, Fair Trade, and small local retailers who need the business more than multi-nationals. moreOpen Question: Physic 101 question.. Be sure to read all the way to the end. He is for real. Dr. Sam Vaknin is an Israeli psychologist. Interesting view on our new president. Dr. Vaknin has written extensively about narcissism. Dr. Vaknin States "I must confess I was impressed by Obama from the firsttime I saw him. At first I was excited to see a black candidate. He looked youthful, spoke well, appeared to be confident -- a wholesome presidential package. I was put off soon, not just because of his shallowness but also because there was an air of haughtiness in his demeanor that was unsettling. His posture and his body language were louder than his empty words. Obama's speeches are unlike any political speech we have heard in American history. Never a politician in this land had such quasi "religious" impact on so many people. The fact that Obama is a total incognito with zero accomplishment, makes this inexplicable infatuation alarming. Obama is not an ordinary man. He is not a genius. In fact he is quite ignorant on most important subjects." Barack Obama is a narcissist. Dr. Sam Vaknin, the author of the Malignant Self Love believes "Barack Obama appears to be a narcissist." Vaknin is a world authority on narcissism. He understands narcissism and describes the inner mind of anarcissist like no other person. When he talks about narcissism everyone listens. Vaknin says that Obama's language, posture and demeanor, and the testimonies of his closest, dearest friends suggest that the man is either a narcissist or he may have narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Narcissists project a grandiose but false image of themselves. Jim Jones, the charismatic leader of People's Temple, the man who led over 900 of his followers to cheerfully commit mass suicide and even murder their own children was also a narcissist. David Koresh, Charles Manson, Joseph Koni, Shoko Asahara, Stalin, Saddam, Mao, Kim Jong Ill and Adolph Hitler are a few examples of narcissists of our time. All these men had a tremendous influence over their fanciers. They created a personality cult around themselves and with their blazing speeches elevated their admirers, filledtheir hearts with enthusiasm and instilled in their minds a new zest for life. They gave them hope! They promised them the moon, but alas, invariably they brought them to their doom. When you are a victim of a cult of personality, you don't know it until it is too late. One determining factor in the development of NPD is childhood abuse. "Obama's early life was decidedly chaotic and replete with traumatic and mentally bruising dislocations,"says Vaknin. "Mixed-race marriages were even less common then. His parents went through a divorce when he was an infant two years old. Obama saw his father only once again, before he died in a car accident. Then his mother re-married and Obama had to relocate to Indonesia , a foreign land with a radically foreign culture, to be raised by a step-father. At the age of ten, he was whisked off to live with his maternal (white) grandparents. He saw his mother only intermittently in the following few years and then she vanished from his life in 1979. Â She died of cancer in 1995." One must never underestimate the manipulative genius of pathological narcissists. They project such an imposing personality that it overwhelms those around them. Charmed by the charisma of the narcissist, people become like clay in his hands. They cheerfully do his bidding and delight to be at his service. The narcissist shapes the world around himself and reduces others in his own inverted image. He creates a cult of personality. His admirers become his co-dependents. Narcissists have no interest in things that do not help them to reach their personal objective. They are focused on one thing alone and that is power. All other issues are meaningless to them and they do not want to waste their precious time on trivialities. Anything that does not help them is beneath them and does not deserve their attention. If an issue raised in the Senate does not help Obama in one way or another, he has no interest in it. The "present" vote is a safe vote. No one can criticize him if things go wrong. Those issues are unworthy by their very nature because they are not about him. Obama's election as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review led to a contract and advance to write a book about race relations. The University of Chicago Law School provided him a lot longer than expected and at the end it evolved into, guess what? His own autobiography! Instead of writing a scholarly paper focusing on race relations, for which he had been paid, Obama could not resist writing about his most sublime self. ....why are they given such absolute (almost religious) authority As a Christian I admit my beliefs are faith based, yet I hear scientific theory being boasted as "gospel" especially by evolutionsists A small portion of the list of failed (superceded) scientific theories This does not include obsolete or incomplete theories Biology Maternal impression – the theory that the mother's thoughts created birth defects. Rendered obsolete by genetic theory (see also fetal origins of adult disease, genomic imprinting) Miasma theory of disease – the theory that diseases are caused by "bad air". Rendered obsolete by the germ theory of disease. Preformationism – the theory that all organisms have existed since the beginning of life, and that gametes contain a miniature but complete preformed individual. Rendered obsolete by cytology, discovery of DNA and Atomic theory. Recapitulation theory – the theory that "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny". Always obsolete; see Baer's laws of embryology. Spontaneous generation – the theory that life spontaneously emerges from dead matter. Rendered obsolete by abiogenesis/biogenesis. Telegony (pregnancy) – the theory that an offspring can inherit characteristics from a previous mate of its mother's as well as its actual parents; a theory often associated with racism. Always obsolete; see heredity. Chemistry Classical elements – discredited by Rhazes Caloric theory Phlogiston theory – replaced by Lavoisier's work on oxidation Part of Dalton's law Vital essence theory Physics Emission theory of vision – discredited by Ibn al-Haytham (Alhacen) Aristotelian theory of gravity – discredited by Muhammad ibn Musa, al-Biruni, al-Baghdadi and Galileo Galilei Aristotelian physics – discredited by Alhacen, al-Biruni, Avicenna, Avempace, al-Baghdadi, Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton Luminiferous aether – failed to be detected by the sufficiently sensitive Michelson-Morley experiment, made obsolete by Einstein's work. Caloric theory – Lavoisier's successor to phlogiston, discredited by Rumford's and Joule's work Vis viva – Gottfried Leibniz's elementary and limited early formulation of the principle of conservation of energy "Purely electrostatic" theories of the generation of voltage differences. Emitter theory – another now-obsolete theory of light propagation. Progression of atomic theory Plum pudding model of the atom – assuming the protons and electrons were mixed together in a single mass Rutherford model of the atom with an impenetrable nucleus orbitted by electrons. Bohr model with quantized orbits Electron cloud model following the invention of Quantum Mechanics in 1925 and the eventual atomic orbital models derived from the quantum mechanical solution to the hydrogen atom. All of classical physics, while useful in practice, is in principle superseded by relativistic physics and quantum physics, to which classical physics is often a close approximation. Astronomy and cosmology Ptolemaic system – obsoleted by Copernicus Geocentric universe – obsoleted by Copernicus and Galileo Copernican system – obsoleted by Johannes Kepler and Isaac Newton Newtonian gravity – superseded by general relativity, to which it is an excellent approximation unless the masses involved are very large or the distances very small. The Perihelion precession of Mercury was the first experimental evidence against Newtonian gravity; it also fails to describe black holes correctly. Ether theory Steady State Theory was a model developed by Hermann Bondi, Thomas Gold, and Fred Hoyle of an expanding universe that had no beginning. It was once a competitor of the Big Bang model until the Big Bang was confirmed as the preferred model after the discovery of the cosmic microwave background. [edit] Geography and climate Flat Earth theory. On length scales much smaller than the radius of the Earth, a flat map projection gives a quite accurate approximation to true distances and sizes, but distortions become increasingly significant over larger distances. Hollow Earth theory The Open Polar Sea, an ice-free sea once supposed to surround the North Pole Rain follows the plow – the theory that human settlement increases rainfall in arid regions (only true to the extent that crop fields evapotranspirate more than barren wilderness) (glnbal warming?) Geology Expanding Earth theory was superseded by subduction Catastrophism was largely replaced by uniformitarianism Psychology Pure behaviorist explanations for language acquisition in infancy, superseded by the study[clarification needed] of cognitive adaptations for language. The blank slate theory of socialization, disproven by research on cross-cultural universals and evolutionary psychology Medicine Theory of the four bodily humours – Well shoot it only posted half the list...... which was less that half of the original list. My question was...if form follows form current scientific theory will be superceded by the next theory...so why do we treat them as the "gospel truth"? If the discard false ideas......but in the case of evolution specifically, they don't....they redefine the definitions Interesting that nobody answered the question...that being why do we accord it such authority Interesting that nobody answered the question...that being why do we accord it such authority moreOpen Question: Homework Help... The Truth About Butterflies: I'm writing, intimidated by the blankness of my paper and trying not to show it, Pen etching deep grooves, Mechanical letters forming dry words, Dry words combining to create meaningless sentences, Trying to be deep, Looking for meaning where there is none, Trying to get something real done, Searching beneath the surface for hidden brilliance, Finding only useless worries, Trap doors, Dark thoughts, Blunt coners, Dead Ends. And that's when I see the butterfly, Lovely even from a distance, Fluttering erratically in a corner of my vision, Colors radiant, Contrasting and harmonizing in unison with the pastel sky, A symbol of all thing beautiful, Weaving a path through the air now, Closer and closer, Coming to rest on a branch, Not three feet away, Separated only by a pane of glass, So close, And now I see it in all of its exquisite, horrid detail. I realize my mistake but it's too late, I can't draw my gaze away, I'm seeing the truth for what it is, Bright scales clinging loosely to gossamer wings, Tattooed patterns designed to distract From the mass of spindly legs, Perfectly still, Too brittle, Too freely jointed, Fine hairs bristling independently, Standing on end, Tasting the air, Distingiushing temperature from pressure from direction, Antenna waving lazily, Fragile bundles of nerves, Quivering at the slightest hint of sound, Proboscis dripping nectar, Lifeblood, sickly sweet, Its tip pulsing, Congealing, Its dead, useless eyes fixed eternally ahead, Pools of liquid blackness, Glinting, Uncomprehending, Innocently menacing, A harmless parasite, A falsehood, A lie... An overgrown flie in disguise. Oh, and the last line is... Now I know the truth about butterflies. moreResolved Question: Why blame Bush for Lying about Saddam Having WMD when democrats lied to?

derivative of a historically subjugated people is the engrained Mexican characteristic of the inability to trust anyone. “The concept of cheating is accepted. It is universal in Mexico. It is a holdover from the Aztec system of accommodation.” Similarly, the rule of law is not held in high esteem in Mexico as it is in the U.S. “When Mexicans do abide by the rule of law it is not for conceptual or moral reasons. They abide by the rule of law in order to not get apprehended by the police.” Beck reflects that “The inability to accept responsibility for any mistake is a dominant Mexican characteristic… Mexicans are taught from an early age to discount personal responsibility. The idea of apologizing does not exist in the Mexican belief system… It is just part of their culture. This behavior existed 500 years ago and still exists today.” These cultural aspects contribute to a less cohesive society where effective self-governance is extraordinarily more difficult to sustain than in the U.S. Ritualized Cannibalism Beck states that “When the Aztecs arrived in1250 A.D., the Valley was crowded with perhaps 5 million of Chichimec barbarians and Toltecs who had been assimilated into the new barbaric culture.” He notes that “The way the Aztecs snuck into the Valley was analogous to the way millions of illegal Mexican immigrants are sneaking into the U.S. today. They arrived uneducated, unskilled, and poor.” Contrary to popular misconceptions held by Mexicans today who idolize the Aztecs, “The once great Teotihuacán culture was not advanced by the Aztecs. The Aztecs had nothing to do with the Golden Age of Mexico. Quite the contrary, under the barbaric stewardship of the Aztecs, the Mexican culture degraded and reached abysmal states of human existence.” As occupants of the Valley, the Aztecs were the most brutal. “The beneficent gods of the Teotihuacanos had been exchanged for the blood-thirsty gods of the Aztecs and Chichimecs. A common sacrifice ritual was the extraction and consumption of the human heart while the human still gasped his last precious breaths of air.” The arms and thighs were cooked and eaten by the masses and the torsos were fed to jaguars. The Aztecs sacrificed 20,000 to 50,000 people a year in the fifteenth century — 2 to 5 million people every century. “Imagine,” Beck writes, “50 to 150 people being brutally sacrificed and eaten every single day in the Central Valley of Mexico” — one percent of the total population. “It was a 300 year blood fest. This became the Mexican nature!” This legacy is inextricably woven into the fabric of present-day Mexico. http://www.thesocialcontract.com/artman2/publish/tsc_20_2/tsc_20_2_elbel.shtml moreResolved Question: Did I get ripped off?
