My Visit to the Bar with Kristy Haywood
Earlier this afternoon, I made my way down to the Cascades Lounge in the lobby of the Pan Pacific Vancouver. It’s been a while since I’ve stopped by the Lounge for a visit, so I thought I’d catch up with Kristy, one of the bartenders working the day shift. As I sat down for a cup of coffee, I notice

Day three: Americans for breakfast
Morning started with getting up. This might seem obvious but it seemed to escape a few of my traveling companions. To them morning seems to be some sort of möbius loop of up and down with intermittent napping. Nevertheless we made the ups stick and moved on to the free breakfast. Apparently the brea

Resolved Question: 3 week travel in the US, what to pack, what to do etc..?
Hi!
I will be traveling in the US for 3 weeks in October. I live in Switzerland, I will be attending a conference in Vancouver, Canada, and after the conference I'd like to visit US. It'll be both a touristic trip and at the same time I will have job interviews for postdoc positions. My plan is:
3-6 October San Francisco,
6-9 October Los Angeles,
then from LA I'll fly to washington, DC on 9 or 10 october, and between 10-24 october I will be visiting Washington, New York and Boston, then on 24th I'll fly back from Boston to Geneva.
This will be my first time to North America, I have many questions:
1. What king of clothes should I pack, how would the weather be in October in the cities I will visit (Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington DC, New York, Boston)?
2. I'm planning to spend 3-4 days for each city for sightseeing, is that enough?
3. Would it be ok to take a bus from SF to LA? I heard that the buses in US are not as nice and comfy as the ones we have in Europe? Is it worth to do that? or should I just fly and spare me a long uncomfortable and smelly bus drive?
4. Could you recommend clean, safe and cheap hostels or hotels in city centers. I am on a tight budget. But safety is also important. I am a female and I will be traveling alone.
5. I don't know how to drive a car so renting a car is out of question. Is the public transport good in the cities I will visit?
6. Do you have any other recommendations? Such as places ı should visit, things I should see, or special foods I should eat?
Thanks in advance!
moreResolved Question: Trying to go on a trip to Cancun when I turn 18, what steps should I take?
So, I'm 17 right now, and next Spring break I'll be almost done my final high school year. Myself and 5 of my buddies will all have sent in to universities and colleges and we'll have our acceptance/rejection letters, so seeing as most of us will be 18, we wanna celebrate by going down to Cancun for a week at an All-Inclusive resort, just the boys. We all live in Vancouver BC right now.
Thing is, I really just don't know where to start. Do I need a special kind of debit card to rent a hotel room? Who should I meet with? What will I need my parents to sign? How should we go about renting the rooms?... Any insight at all would be nice. Thanks :)
moreResolved Question: Is tipping required for in-room check in at hotels?
My husband and I are going to stay the night at the Shangri-La in Vancouver tonight. He gets to expense the room since he's on his way back from a work-trip.
It's a very posh hotel, and they check you in partly at the front desk, but complete the process (credit card, signing the stuff) in the actual room.
Do I need to tip the person who checks us in in the room? There is no other way of checking in, it's not a 'special service' or anything. Please advise!!! If you have ideas on how much to tip, please include those (the nightly rate is really expensive, it's $385 a night).
moreResolved Question: Nice Hotel and Shops/Malls In Victoria, BC?
Going to try and keep it short. I am not new to the area, however I have never stayed over night in Victoria, BC as I live in the Vancouver area.
1. Are there any decent hotels that I should go out of my way to stay at from your personal experience? (I know how to use the hotel search sites, I would just like individuals personal experience and places they enjoyed)
2. The hotel should be in the Beacon Hill Park area as I have a few recreational groups Im hoping to join while Im there with the kids (3yrs and 18 months).
3. Are there any good malls, specialty shops or exceptional restaurants in the area that would be worth checking out?
4. Any non touristy/events going on for the small children (3yrs and 18 months age bracket) while Im there next Monday and Tuesday that would be worth knowing about?
We are leaving early (Sunday) to spend Mothers Day on the island and will be staying Monday and Tuesday (due to my husbands work). So if anyone knows of an exceptional place to stay or some special things to do in the area while I'm there with my kids I would greatly appreciate any information you can provide. Thanks and much appreciation in advance =)

moreResolved Question: Should we vacation in Vancouver or Portland this Christmas?
The flights and hotels will cost us about the same. We've never been to Canada or Oregon, and my husband and I want to do something really special together before I am shipped off into the military (we'll be living apart for 14 months).
Has anyone been to either place or both? What activities would you recommend for this time of year, and where do you recommend staying? We'd like to see the city but also have a romantic dinner or cruise, have some drinks, etc. We can't necessarily afford the nicest hotel, so please recommend places with different price ranges.
Or Vegas? What's there to do besides gamble?
