Open Question: How crazy would I have to be to drive to Belize?
You're probably not going to change my mind, I'm just looking into how nutty this is perceived to be.
I've had this idea for some time now. I have in-laws who've done it from CA, but people have told me how dangerous it would be. I've driven my car in three different countries and I want to make Belize my fourth. What I want to do is start out up in Vancouver, BC and drive all the way down the Pacific coast, through San Diego, and Tijuana then across Mex Hwy 2, then down to the Yucatan then to Belmopan in Belize in a VW Golf.
Any alternate route suggestions?
After this, perhaps, Alaska to Panama (distant future).
moreResolved Question: So the US isn't the only one with an immigration problem read this.?
VANCOUVER – More than 200 migrants aboard cargo ship MV Sun Sea apparently bound for B.C. are entitled to due process of their refugee claims, said a Toronto-based lawyer.
Gary Anandasangaree, who was in Vancouver last October to provide legal counsel to 76 Tamil men aboard the MV Ocean Lady, said Canadians should ask why these people have taken such an “extraordinary risk” in crossing the Pacific Ocean.
“The danger that we face here is that there’s significant generalization as to who and what they are,” he said. “First and foremost, we have to look at these people as individuals.
“Depending on the number of people, each would have a specific and unique experience that would either qualify them or disqualify them as a refugee claimant.
“That kind of one-on-one determination is way important to ensure that everyone has due process and is treated fairly.”
Many aboard the ship are alleged members of the terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, according to Sri Lankan newspaper Sunday Observer.
MV Sun Sea could arrive off the coast of B.C. by the first week of August, the report added.
Both Canadian and American border agencies are aware of the ship but remain tight-lipped about the situation.
The 76 men aboard the MV Ocean Lady have been released from custody, and are going through the refugee application process.
“The danger we had in October, and I think I kind of see it repeating itself, is that we label these folks and after three to four months of expensive and arduous legal process the government backs off and they release everybody,” he said. “I don’t think that tactic is required at this time.”
Taken from a news flash of a BC paper unbelievable? just keep letting them in with no idea who they are and the last part is so true the government makes a big splash like this then when no one is looking they all get let go with promises to return for further investigating. HA they never do and never seen again so sick of this!! If I could I would leave but go where?? How about the States :)
Naw I will keep fighting and making a stink and being called a racist. Been called worse by better people.
if you read clarfully the ship hasent even docked yet and most of them are already cleared by customs?!?
laduree2: why dont you try, just run up to the border and say I'm here!! And i'm shure they will let you in.. They let everyone else in with less.

moreResolved Question: Question about boarding the BC Ferries?
So this question is for all the Vancouver residents who board the ferry quite often!!
I'm going up to sunshine coast with a group of 12 (in total 3 cars) on the 31st of this month.
We didn't book a reservation for the ferries, and when we checked online on bcferries.com, we saw that we aren't able to book any until 430pm!!
My group and I we're hoping to leave Vancouver Horeshoebay roughly noon ish.
Now, the website says we arent able to reserve any spots until the 430 departure, but do you think we are able to still get in if we go early enough without booking it before hand?
Or, does it mean that the ferries are COMPLETLY booked when it says there are no reservable spots for any earlier time?
Please help!
Thank you :)

Hi Folks
My wife and I are both 24 and are looking to do some travelling for 5-7 weeks. We love America and go on vacation there from the UK for most years, but have never got as far as the West Coast.
Ideally we would love to do some sort of road trip in campervan and camp or stay in motels. Can anyone give me some tips on the top things we should do/see?
Obviously things such as Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, are standard. We are thinking of places off the beat and track that us folks from the UK might not have heard about.
I would ideally like to go see some of the National Parks in Vancouver in Canada then make our way down the west coast. Any ideas?
We have a year to plan this trip and are working on a budget between £5,000 - £7,000.
Thanks guys and gals.

Or it seriously felt like it.. for Vancouver.
A whopping 28C. Feeling higher with humidity and all that . I guess that's no where near the east coast and many many other parts of the world but boy was I exhausted from the heat or what. I hate to complain though, it's too cold, its too hot. I'm perfectly happy with 20C weather. It's hitting 30 tomorrow grrrrr.
So, what's your ideal temp for the summer and the winter? And how did you try to "beat the heat"
I tried swimming but the moment I stepped out I was sweltering hot :\
Why is when it comes to weather everyone tries to beat the next person? Oh we get WAY more snow! Our summers are SO hot! etc etc.
I'm just saying, 28 is very high for a summer day in Vancouver .

I have friends in Vancouver (a married couple with a baby) and after begging my boyfriend for 5 years to go and pay them a visit, he finally agreed. I got a bonus recently so I said that the plane tickets were my treat. He wants to go for 4 days, i want to go for 5. He doesn't really want to go, but he agreed just because i won him over by being cute. The only plane ticket i found (and most affordable) was $480 and both ways are overnight flights which works great going there since are flying from the East coast but sort of messes up coming back because we end up arriving East at 7 am and it kind of ruins the day. We are staying in a room in a condo with no tv. My boyfriend loves his tv. What do you think I should do, cave in and just go for 4 days and go for 5 days since we are traveling across the continent and plane tickets are expensive?

moreResolved Question: What business does a yellow clown goby have on the west coast of Canada?
I was at the beach a few years ago looking through the tide pools and saw a little yellow fish. I knew right away that it didn't belong there. It seemed to be alive and doing well despite the shallow water it was in. Not knowing what it was, I picked it up and moved it into a deeper tide pool and it quickly swam away. I tried looking for it again a few hours later but I couldn't find it.
I still remember what it looked like (seeing a bright yellow fish among bullheads, little eels and flounders...big contrast!) and looked it up a few days ago. I recognized it right away as a yellow clown goby. But, I was surprised to see that it was native to the coast of Australia/Japan. =/
The beach is a private beach and few people have access to it. Would it have been able to make it from Australia to the waters of Vancouver, Canada? How long would it have lasted in such a different environment? I wish I would have taken it home and created a saltwater environment for it...I don't think it would have lasted long with the large populations of eagles and herons around.
Hmm...interesting. I know of no other fish that's bright yellow and is native to the west coast! Anyone know of one?

moreResolved Question: West Coast: The big earthquake coming soon?
So if anyone hasn't been living in a cave over the last few or so months the world has been getting some pretty big and average size earthquakes....
The biggest threat if anyone knows is on the West Coast from British Columbia, Canada down to South California even into mexico with the titonic plates...
From reports there is usually an expected big earthquake at least once every 250 years, and the last huge one to hit the westcoast (HUGE) was over 250 years ago..... maybe I'm wrong but from what my knowledge...
Anyways what are the chances of the big one hitting ther westcoast? I know up in BC there is Vancouver Island which could be wipped out by a Tsunami easily.
The next earthquake
I never mentiond anything about 2012 and don't believe in that.... and I know you can't say when it will happen.. but what I'm basically asking is that with all the earthquakes going is there a bigger chance for the big one to hit the west coast.

moreResolved Question: What should a Canadian theme park look like?
In the USA,
I'm tired of the fake Canada exhibits like the Epcot Center in Florida where Canada looks like a medieval castle with a Mercantile store with fake-drawn totem poles and lumberjacks.
This is like making a USA themepark with a picture of a Yanki Duddle riding a pony with a macaroni hat.
I think I'd rather see a more educated Canada theme park with a ride/exhibit for each province.
Would this be a good set-up?
Quebec section- Bohemmes Carnaval and a funicular ride, a poutine stand, historical film about Jacques Cartier
Ontario - CN Tower, Parliament Hill....ice skating rink machine-frozen shaped like Rideau Canal, Niagara Falls remake, Store: Tim Hortons Coffee, Jersey Milk Bars and buttertarts and maple syrup
Manitoba - we would take the Golden Boy Winnipeg Statue, a modeled CN Rail car, and a square field with Yellow Poppy seeds.......a film about the Metis struggle and the Winnipeg Strike
Saskatchewan - We would have a panoramic 360 film dedicated to Tommy Douglas, a film to honour the RCMP in training, a film showing Medicine Hat, Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert.
Alberta - We would have a huge oil rig and a small version of Calgary's Luge....3D movie of the Canadian Rockies
BC - Clearly the spirit of the 2010 Olympic games brought to life.....and displays of Vancouver artists, pictures of the beautiful ecosystem on the pacific coast
Yukon - Remake of Dawson City....
you get the point.....
couldn't there be a park like this to feature Canada in proper light, historically, multiculturally, scenically? all that

moreResolved Question: During the 2010 Olympics there's been a lot of commercials promoting some of the Canadian provinces - accurate?
During the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, there's been television commercials promoting the provinces of Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, and British Columbia.
Do you think they are accurate in terms of what they represent about life in those provinces?
Manitoba - The slogan is the "energy and spirit of Manitoba will take you and you won't want to leave (kind of promoting a friendly small town feel with a slower pace of life to enjoy more of the things you like to do).
Ontario - The slogan is "there's no place like this for me" (it promotes the diversity of Ontario and that it's a unique place in that you can really be free to be who you are).
Quebec - There's no spoken narration for this commercial but just shows shots of life in Quebec played to some pleasant music. However, their slogan is "Providing emotions since 1534" (so it's like promoting Quebec as a place that will engage your emotions).
Newfoundland and Labrador - It shows shots of the sereneness of the east coast and shows some remnants of some Viking dwellings, with some modern day kids (Scandinavian-looking) exploring these remnants (it's got like a vibe that it's a province that has like a remote and somewhat mysterious coastal wilderness).
British Columbia - The commercials are biased because of the 2010 Olympics, but they show various Canadian celebrities (from BC?) saying that it's "beautiful" and that "you gotta be here" and that it's "home" (The vibe is that it's a beautiful grand place that is growing).
So, just out of curiosity, for any of you who have lived in any of these provinces - do you think that these slogans accurately represent life in those respective provinces?

I wanted to plan a road trip from Dawson Creek to Vancouver (approx 13 hr drive) I will land in Edmonton and Depart from Vancouver. To save money I was kinda hoping to find camping areas or Bed and Breakfast. Any scenic route you would suggest. Any tips?

moreVoting Question: Help me identify these fish/eels I've seen off the coast of Vancouver, Canada!?
In the summer, I go to my grandparents cabin which is almost right on the ocean. Close enough that during certain times of the year, the stairs leading from their deck need to be pulled up or the tide will carry them away. I've been going there since I was born and have always enjoyed looking through the tidepools and catching little fish. Up until a few years ago, the only fish I see are flounders, bullheads and sand lances. Usually just the young ones none over a few inches long and wide. However, I remember one day a few years ago I saw a bunch of weird things that I'd never seen before.
First, there were eel-like things. TONS of them. Not as many as the flounders and bullheads, but still one or two every few steps. I was scared at first, but it didn't take long before I was picking them up. They definitely moved/swam like an eel...They looked exactly like this:
http://www.imontvbitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/eel.jpg
Some were black like in the photo, some were dark/medium brown. I thought they could be young American eels, but American eels live on the east coast of North America not the west.
I found another eel-like thing floating in the deeper water as the tide was coming in. It was almost dead. It was hardly swimming and would turn sideways. It was much much bigger than the eels found previously, but in comparison to them, it wasn't as long. I don't know if that makes sense. The other eels were long and slender. This one was quite thick and just over a foot or so long. It too swam like an eel. This one was a light brown-orange/red colour. It looked like a green moray eel...But, it wasn't green and wasn't proportionately long enough.
Then, there was a bright yellow fish that looked just like this:
http://www.reefhotspot.com/store/images/PP%20goby%20clown%20yellow%20%20m.jpg
It didn't show signs of being in distress and swam fine. It looks very similar to the clown goby, but I don't remember seeing the pink spot on it's cheek and clown gobys aren't native to here. =/
So...anyone know what these fish might be? I'm assuming that the yellow fish was dumped in the ocean by an irresponsible owner, because if it was in fact a goby, I don't see how it could have gotten from Asia/Australia waters to a Vancouver tidepool! Though, I should note that the beach is private and very few people walk along it other than the owners of the cabins.
moreResolved Question: Who else is on the west coast and is seriously pissed at NBC?
I mean come on we live in the SAME FRIGGEN TIMEZONE as Vancouver and we get tape delay?? It was bad enough with Beijing. But, I live in Washington. I'm a 3 hour drive from Vancouver but I can't see it live, while people all the way across the nation can?!? WTF?
moreResolved Question: What should I do if I don't get it?
So, I'll be going to Vancouver (if I get my passport in time) on the 26th with a couple friends to see CC. I applied for my passport on the 9th and paid the extra $60 to expedite it and it will be shipped to my friends house in San Francisco. We're driving up that night and the lady at the post office said it takes two to three weeks to get it and another guy said I'll probably get it so I'm confused/nervous. It'll be really depressing if I can't go with them but at least I'll get to go to the west coast. Anyways, if I don't get my passport in time I'm guessing I'll just stay in Seattle for a couple days while they are in Vancouver. So, do you know anything I could do in Seattle that's cheap? Are any good bands going to be there? Do you think I'll get my passport in time? Shankshh.

moreResolved Question: I would like to live in Vancouver but afraid to live near the coast (don't wanna die)?
Hi, what are the odds that within the next 50 years vancouver will be under the ocean?
that fear is the only thing holding me back from living where I want to live.
I love the rain.
I obviously meant prematurely
I'm not talking about earthquakes!!
I'm talking about a massive title wave 10 miles high caused by a rock from space hitting the ocean. 2012 is right around the corner, anything's possible, I value my life so I have a right to be concerned.
moreResolved Question: Do you think global climate shift is happening?
(notice I didn't say global warming) I live in Utah - we have no snow - Vancouver has no snow - the East Coast is getting slammed. Anyone know if the Earth's magnetic shifts have occurred at the same time as climate shifts in the past? When I was a kid we had a couple of feet of snow most of the winter, every winter. Now we don't.
moreResolved Question: Toronto (East Coast) OR Vancouver (West Coast)?
Im currently in my second year of university (in the United States) my family lives in northern Pennsylvania and Cincinnati, Ohio. My political views are very LIBERAL and I have been looking to transfer and start a life in Canada. I just don't know where to continue my studies.
My major is psychology/neuroscience and I'm looking to get into medical research in my latter years. (Note: I am an advocate and supporter of the use of Marijuana for both medical and recreational purposes) and this is where I'd like to hope to spend most my time researching (pharmaceuticals)
So my question is where would be the best place to get into the medical research field? I know University of Toronto is a great research center and I love Toronto and Montreal but I also like the West Coast living style. I also know Toronto and Montreal are very liberal basically socialist there I was just wondering about Vancouver more I know it'd be more expensive and harder to move there but whatever allows me to do my work, have a good quality of life, and help in the pursuit of legalizing marijuana.
I'm not looking for opinions on which city is better they are both great I'm just trying to live in a nice LIBERAL city (eg San Francisco)
