Open Question: Turn a USB external HDD into a Network Backup drive?

I have a USB 2.0 External HDD, which i connect to my computers via Mini USB to USB plug (mini usb goes into the HDD) and a power plug that goes into the wall. i want to connect the drive to my routers to use as a backup drive for all my pc's. Is this possible? if so what cables/adapters do i need? links please Thanks for your reply Tim S but its not really helpful as i do not want to have to have computers on all the time etc. i was really looking for a cable/adapter or a better solution Freyer thanks also.. but i have seen Ethernet drives and yes they have all the capabilities that you claim USB drives dont have when infact they are the same product just with different plugs. They plug into a slot on your Router and now all ocmputers can view it  more

Open Question: Should i upgrade my xbox 360 60GB for the new slim?

Now the xbox i have is 60GB and i have 2 controls for it and the wireless network adapter never got the red ring of death never over heats i could leave it on all day and nothing will happen. From what i saw the Slim overheats really quick and my 60GB never overheats even if i leave it on all day. I was also wondering how does the system for the achievements work, will i get my achievements back, the only thing i do know is i will be able to sign back into my old account but i dont know if i will get all of my achievements back. My current xbox seems to be one of the better copies of the other terrible xbox 360s and i dont really wanna trade it in if the overheating will disturb my gaming, but i could use more memory for game and i really could use more usb ports, so i was just wondering is it worth it, what are the good things of the slim and the bad?  more

Open Question: Making the wireless adapter reconnect when connection is lost?

ok, here's my problem: i have a wireless usb wifi adapter. every so often, the connection drops, and i'm unable to use the internet. then, i need to disconnect and connect again to the network and the problem is fixed until the next time. the problem starts when i'm not next to the computer, and i'm downloading something. that case the download stops and i'm screwed. i'd like an application that can monitor the internet connection, and when it's down, reconnect by itself. something in the line of : 1. ping a know address (like google.com). 2. if the ping is ok, wait 30 seconds 3. else - disconnect from the wireless network and reconnect. 4. return to 1 does anyone know something like this?  more

Open Question: Wireless adapter works but does not pick up my router?

Okay, so all I wanted to do was try to make this old computer (Dell Dimension 4300) connect to our buildings wireless router (Linksys WRT54G2-R Wireless G). This router does not require authentication, it is open. Without thinking about USB compatibility I purchased a WUSB54GC-RM Wireless G adapter. When I plugged it in, I got the error about not having hi speed usb ports. I tried installing the service pack but that didn't work, obviously because I need 2.0. Before I go buy more stuff which I kind of want anyway because I know I'll have problems using my IPod, I wanted to clarify something. The adapter installed fine when I did it manually, and it even picks up another network. It still warns me about the speed, however. Does this mean I have to configure the network to show up in my available networks or does it have something to do with the USB 2.0? I thought that it would be there in the list. How do I fix this :( My network is not on the list. I only have Universal USB controllers, I need extended?  more

Open Question: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD?

So my Toshiba Satellite has started giving me the BSOD at start up, right when you select the user. I am also given this STOP error; STOP: 0x0000000A (0xA5A5A5B5 0x00000002 0x0000000 0x804DAB9E) As stated, the BSOD says "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" I have not done anything to the drivers or have installed any new software. I read about it being possibly being a RAM problem, so I remove the two sticks individually, same error. I have also disabled and also detached the network adapter card, same error. I disabled the USB function, same error. A full scan from Malwarebytes came up totally clean. The only way for me to go to the desktop is through Safe Mode. The BSOD suggests disabling BIOS caching, which I believe I have done in the Toshiba BIOS, same error. I decide to try system restore, up to a full week ago, same error. "Last Known Good Configuration" also results in this error. I have had experience removing viruses before, if this is the case, but I am completely stumped with this gem of a problem. The BSOD also does not indicate any exact piece of hardware or software, just telling me about hardware or software possibly being the case. WINDOWS XP SP2 is the OS.  more

Open Question: How do I set up an extended wireless network (550ft)?

I currently have a wireless G network set up, and the built in WiFi card picks up the signal. I would like to extend the signal to a location approx. 550 ft away, but the line of sight would go right through another building. I'm looking at a Hawking 15dbi outdoor directional antenna, and wondering if there's any way the signal would be strong enough. Also, I would like to know what kind of adapter or other hardware I would need to connect the laptop to the antenna (ethernet? usb? wireless adapter?). Thanks,  more

Voting Question: Question about a USB wireless network adapter?

I just set up a wireless router in my house (D-link DIR-615). The router is ' Wireless N 300'. There are 3 PCs in the house, and some phones, but one of the PCs - mine, unfortunately, is the only one not connecting to the network. I realize this is because I do not have a wireless card in it. My first question is if I purchase a USB wireless network adaptor, will the PC connect to the wireless network? Is that all I need, it seems too simple? I was reading about needing some sort of 'network access point' - I am not sure if I need that or what it is. I would like to take advantage of the 'N' network as opposed to the g (which is slower, right?) is there a wireless network adaptor you can suggest or is it a trivial difference?  more

Is this possible? 10 points for the best answer..Thanks ahead. Voting Question: installing driver on isolated windows 98 computer?

for anyone who knows a lot about computers-- I have a computer (compaq presario) running on windows 98 that i would like to be able to use my sandisk cruzer flash drive with. because windows 98 is old enough that drivers are not included in the OS, i must somehow get the driver (which i have already downloaded on another computer) onto this computer. this is where the problem comes in. i don't have internet on this computer, and obviously, i cant transfer it with a flash drive, as i need this driver to allow flash drives to work with it. i tried putting it on a cd, but apparently my computer only reads audio cds, not data ones (i tried several different cds). i could copy the file to a floppy disk--the floppy disk drive is apparently working, but the only other computer i have access to that has a floppy disk drive wont write anything on them or read them (im assuming its broken--i tried many different floppy disks in it). i could i guess buy very cheaply an external floppy disk drive--is it worth it...will it work? today i tried the idea of networking my two computers together, but there is no port for a network cable on the cpu of my compaq. i read that there are adapters you can get, but i dont know if it will even work...do you need netword cards or something as well? and will this work between a computer running vista and one running W98? another thing i read about is a usb to usb transfer cable, that doesn't need a driver (but it does for W98): http://www.usbgear.com/link/index.html it doesnt sound like i could use this without needing to install a driver first, the same problem i am trying to solve. please, give me any solutions i have not thought of, or tell my what my best option is, as i have no idea where to go from here...i have ben stuck on this problem for a while, and i would really like to be able to use this computer for simple things like typing documents, but i can't print, email, or transfer any other way, so its pointless use it now. thanks  more

Voting Question: Mac noob - is this laptop ok? help please!?

So last night our dog pulled my laptop off the desk one time too many and it's finally carked it. I don't want to spend a lot of money on a new laptop so I'm looking at second hand ones. I have a powerful desktop computer for graphic editing and gaming so I'm not concerned about needing to do those. What I really want is a mac (itll be my first, I want to learn if I like them before forking out a huge amount for a brand spanking new one). However, if I buy a second hand one I want it to last me for 6 months at least. It will only really be used to browse the net /downloading (to xfer onto desktop) and listen to music. So there's one Im looking at with the following specs: APPLE G4 IBOOK 1.42GHZ **14" SCREEN **60 GIG HDD **DVD Combo DRIVE **768MBRAM **NETWORK PORT **USB PORTS **POWER ADAPTER (note: this is does not have airport card, however if you have one, then just put it in then it will work) Will this do what I want it to do? ANd what do I need to connect it to our existing wireless network? Thanks! Sorry should post the cost - it's $450NZ (US$312) and I have a PC already, hence the reason I want to try a mac! (plus macs are so pretty ;) ) And yessss it does have to be a notebook, already have an excellent desktop computer as mentioned... i just can't take that to bed with me. :p  more

Open Question: Xbox 360 elite and xbox live and a job?

I'm 14 I'm gonna get a job at chick fil a and let's say I get paid 6$ an hour work 4 hours a day for 4 days a week for the next 2 months. I will buy a xbox 360 elite and a 3 month membership to xbox live which will all together cost about 350 or so. If I work for that much I said I will get around maybe 96$ a week/around 380 a month...my parents r getting me a tv as a screen for my new computer(it's atually is the family computer) and it's goin in my room so I will plug my soon to be xbox into my tv/moniter thing and I can play xbox...and my mom has this belkin wireless USB adapter and I still have to program it and once I do I just put it into my computer and I'll have wifi for my computer...first can I just plug a ethernet cord into my xbox and computer and will I have wifi...secong can I just take the belkin USB thing and plug it into my xbox USB port after programming it to my xbox...or at the rate of what I'd be getting paid for my job would it be easier to buy a wireless network adapter which is about 90$ and plug it into my xbox and get xboxlive? And if i could I'd rather do it without having to buy anything else (other than the xbox) except a ethernet cable so I could use a lot of the money I'd be makin from work and put that in the bank and stuff  more

I've tried multiple things to fix it including: I use a router so I tried connecting the modem directly to the computer, but it didn't work. I've switched cables, but I think the cable is fine because it works ok with my laptop. I've tried different ports on the router, still doesn't fix it. Reinstalled the drivers for the network adapter and nothing. System restore did nothing either. The port is integrated in to the motherboard (if that makes any sense) I have an Asus M2N-E. Are there any quick fixes? Should I buy a pci network adapter and use that instead. Also some of my usb ports just stopped working, or just work poorly. Especially the 2 that are right beside the ethernet port. Maybe the motherboard is just getting old.  more

Resolved Question: computer help! looking to buy a netbook/mini laptop?

Hi, I am going to Spain for the summer and I would like to buy a netbook/mini laptop to bring with me. The only things I want it for are: 1. internet access; 2. uploading my digital photos from my camera 3. watching DVDs 4. word processing. I am told that where I am going has wireless internet access (as to what type I have absolutely no idea). I know hardly anything about computers and find all the specs so confusing! The title says all, I'm using Windows Vista SP2, with USB Wireless Adapter 802.11 b/g. My router is Charter, Ambit. There is nothing wrong with it, as I had a technician come today and install a new one, and my LAPTOP's wifi and my other desktop's Ethernet works perfectly. My desktop (with a prebuilt Wifi card) doesn't work, however. I have spent A LOT of effort into this, researched all forums and videos, nothing helps. I did this: -Disabled IPv6 -Checked Security Code -Turned on Network Discovery -Made sure there were no microwave ovens... -IP configurations are AUTOMATIC, not preferred. -Checked for new installations in IPV4/6, for clients services and protocals. -Rebooted my modem and computer. -Turned off Firewall/antivirus. -DId scans with Spyware Doctor and AVG (nothing found). -Rebooted WIFI adapter -Updated my driver, and yes it's the latest version. This problem happened suddenly, and I don't know how to fix it. I've been using WiFi on this computer for about 2 years, and it dropped out a few days ago. It'll say Local Only, Identifying Network, Limited Access, or No Connection every few minutes. Mostly Local Only and Identifying. Sometimes the adapter completely bla @magarguy Yeah, its already in the thing. I said it works with my other laptop on wifi and my other desktop and Ethernet. Pinging works, i can connect to the internet, it just drops out every few min. Its annoying cuz my game can't reconnect if you dc, even if ur internet reconnects again.  more

Resolved Question: Linksys Wireless Network Adapter failed to connect?

I have a linksys WUSB54G V.4. It's been working fine on Vista. I set up a dual boot with Windows 7 and while trying to get it to work with Win 7, somehow messed it up with Vista. I got it working on Win 7 so I know it's not the adapter. When I plug it into the USB drive it makes a "da da da" sound rather than the "da dum" sound you usually get when plugging in a USB device. Also under my windows update it shows a critical download for wireless g adapter but has an error installing it. I've downloaded the drivers from the website and can't get it to work. Any ideas? Thanks  more

Voting Question: Wireless Problem, this is a stumper?

Okay well here goes My laptop (hp dv6488se) has somehow lost its wireless ability. It is not in the device manager, the switch to turn it on and off is saying its off no matter what, I've tried to reinstall everything, hell i eve reformatted it, still nothing, I've opened the the laptop, took out and re secured the wireless card. I've tried yelling at it, kissing it, groping it, but it will not come back. I contacted HP, they said "hey reinstall this", did that, it worked, closed the laptop to go to bed, gone again, did what they told me again, didn't work.now it won't come back at all, and i really do not know what else it could be. Resolved Question: Internal Network Adapter Card keeled over, what should I do?

I have an Acer Aspire 4520 and until recently my internal network adapter card was working perfectly fine. So now I have restarted several times. I have checked my settings to make sure it was on. Made sure my wireless switch was on. Rebooted the router (and all other computers in the house are in working order when it comes to internet and wireless) It first refused to even recognize my own router listed, and when it was listed it refused to connect to it. Now it decided that it doesn't want to see anything available at all (even if I am within distance of it) I had removed and reprogrammed the router into my wireless list and that worked an all 3 minutes before kicking me off and saying I had no connection. Now, my fiance let me borrow and use the USB viable network adapter to see if I could get on that way and WAH-LAH I am online without problem. So I am now curious: Is there anything I have missed? I even did a virus scan, updated, and everything I can think of. Or do you think my internal card has finally decided after awhile to run itself into the proverbial brick wall? Well the bugger says it is working perfectly. I am going to attempt to update drivers again and see what happens.  more
