Open Question: Highland Dance kilt problem...?

I am in highland dance. I am looking into getting material to be made into a kilt for myself. I found this beautiful tartan, Dress Green MacPherson. I have black material to be made into a vest, and am wondering if it is possible to wear this black vest with the Dress Green MacPherson. There is no black in the tartan, so that is why it could be a problem. Does anyone know a good tartan that looks nice with a black vest or jacket? Thanks.  more

She looked to be about late fifties, early sixties. She was carrying a young child, not anymore than three, in her arms. Her balding hubby followed her in. She had short brown hair and was sporting a beige jacket and large brimmed hat – even went so far as to complete the look with some white sunglasses. She wore darker brown pants and black dress shoes. Her husband wore your classic Levi blue jeans, brown boots (by the look of them steel toed), and a plaid shirt, probably a Stewart tartan. Atop his head lay a quirky fez. They too had a verbal battle with the Receptionist. For school, we have white polo shirts and green/blue/gold tartan skirts. We also have pullover woolly navy blue jumpers and blue/white/gold spray jackets. We can wear navy blue pants in winter, but most girls wear skirts. Anyway, I'm quite curvy on top, and when I wear my white polo shirt over my (thick) school skirt, it's really unflattering! I look fat and frumpy. But when I tuck it in, it cinches in my waist and is more flattering, but no one at my school wears theres tucked in. It's not that it's not allowed, but no one does it. Resolved Question: Back to School - Strict Uniform Code?

Hey there. I'm living in Ireland, and going to a Catholic school, which is the norm for many students here. I'm sure many of you have had to put up with fairly strict uniform codes, if you're going/have went to a Catholic school. I do understand the need for uniforms, and it's probably best that such rules are in place. However, I received a letter in the post today from my school, regarding uniforms, and I can't help but feel a little disheartened! (rules are now more strict than they have been in previous years) -- The uni. is --- Navy tartan kilt, navy jumper (with red stripe and school crest), white shirt, red tie, navy socks/tights, formal black shoes, OFFICIAL school jackets. P.E (Gym) Uniform - White sports top, Navy shorts, white ankle socks, Trainers (sneakers) and navy tracksuit (sweats) We are not allowed to wear make-up or fashion jewelery. I'm not too worried about the make up, but I'll miss wearing earrings! Not much I can do about it. Everyone else looking forward to Back to School!?  more

Resolved Question: Is it just me that hates indie?

Here is a list of my reasons. 1: A great deal of the Indie kids at my college seem to be so far up themselves that they are arrogant and nasty to other people. Just because they are in crappy indie bands that record music as uninspired as the bands they listen to, it doesn't make them God's gift to society. 2: They're so individual that they all dress in Topman and end up looking exactly the same as each other. Topman may be the only clothes shop in the area that caters for sixth formers, since Burtons now makes clothes for chavs with their first court appearance in the near horizon, but surely if Indie kids are so unique and different from others they'd make an effort to wear something better than that. They all wear those stupid little hats that don't fit as well. 3: Every fashionable item of clothing is now lumped into the "That's so indie" category, regardless of it's previous origins and associations before indie even existed. Even eBay sellers have realised that they can make more money by putting "indie" in the listing title. I mean since when have illegal snakeskin products from Thailand been indie? The answer is simply, ever since it has become a trend that marketers have been able to exploit. Even those mod culture black jackets with the tartan lining from decades ago are now passed off as indie, along with the 80's trend of acid wash jeans. 4: The singers can't sing. There's no denying that all indie music is bad enough without the noises the "singers" make over it. Think of a dying animal with a barbed wire fence cutting into its throat, that's what you hear two minutes into every indie song after the self indulgent intro has finished. They howl, they screech, they squawk .. they do anything but sing in tune with the music. I know that last one was very similar to a quote off of another website, but I fully agree with the writer. 5: The recording and editing is crap on purpose. Maybe this is to highlight their independant roots, maybe they think it's raw and punk sounding, maybe they're scared of people claiming that they're selling out by releasing a well produced album that doesn't sound as if it was recorded on a tape player in the drummer's nan's garage. Regardless of the reason, the big indie bands soon make enough money to afford decent recording studios, so why don't they use them? 6: It doesn't stand for anything at all. "Indie" suggests independence, which surely means that every band that isn't signed yet is somehow indie, despite what genre of music they make. The term is way too inclusive to the point where every band considered indie sounds exactly the same as the last one. Even before they sold out- Prodigy were being described by some music magazines as being an indie band, despite the fact that they came out of the 90's English rave scene. This Indie trend has taken aspects of loads of different genres and styles and turned them into a new style that doesn't make sense. Surely when every band that has a bit of commercial success and plays at Glastonbury is "indie-vidual"- it gets to the point where nobody is.  more

Resolved Question: Bridesmaid dress green or blue?

so ok here is what happened, im gettin married in august and i wanted my bridesmaid to be wearing blue, but my soon to be mother-in-law suggested green as it is the main colour in the grooms family tartan and they will all be wearing green jackets (i had already been considering green but settled on blue) so my fiance demands that i change the dress colour to green so after considerable deliberation and discussions with my mum i decided that i could opt for a light green like a mint or something really pale but still green, and purely because my soon to be mother-in-law had a point it would look better if she was in green, so i told my fiance that we would change it to pale green and he now tells me it has to be the same or similar shade of green as thier jackets so she would be wearing a dark green dress..... my question is this, should i just put her in the colour of green he wants or have i compromised enough by putting her in any shade of green when i really wanted her in blue? ok so just been talkin to him again and told him that if it is a compromise i am more than happy to have a pale green and all he is saying now is "oh do what you want im passed caring now" i think he might be trying to guilt trip me into the colour, arrrrgggghhhhhh what a pain in the AR$£....oh and as for some1 saying that it his wedding too this is true enough and i offer no defence except, its my sister and i know what she suits and a dark green is sooooo out of the question so please stop suggesting it, its light green or blue (shade of blue is totally up for discussion) if you wanna see the tartan look here ... http://www.mts.net/~dballard/images/davidson/Davidson%20tartan.gif oh btw i do know that the original question was should i put her in the dark green but im scrapping that now its light green or blue  more

Resolved Question: How to wash clothes with more than 1 colour?

One of my shirts is black and white tartan check. On the inside it's all white and it's 100% cotton and it says to wash in 50C and it also says wash deep colours together with which I think it implies to wash it with black, etc. However, I'm living in student's halls of residence (student accommodation and there aren't that many settings for the washing machine. The only setting closest to what I think is recommended on the label is the 'Colour' setting which is 40C plus I would have to wash all my dark clothes with the shirt. Won't the white on the shirt become horrible? I really like this shirt =( Also, I have a T-shirt which is predominantly white but the graphics in the front is in black and it's quite a big graphic. Would anything happen to the black design if I wash it with all my other white clothes? Would it come off onto the other white clothes? Finally, I have a zipped hoodie jacket which is all grey on the outside and purple on the inside. The outside is 100% acrylic and the inside is 100% polyester. How on earth do I was this? At what temperature will colours start to go onto other clothes? Do colours come off when handwashing? I don't really have any light coloured clothes. Actually I only have dark colours, one or two beige-ish and greyish t shirts and then the rest are white. My wardrobe is small =p Anyway, if I wash the shirt and t shirt with the whites will the white come off onto the to shirt and make it lighter coloured? What if I put it into the gentle setting? What is the difference between the settings anyway? Is it the harshness i.e. how rigorous the machine washes the clothes? Cause there are settings for cotton and polyester on a normal washing machine.  more

I am looking at buying a 70's tartan 27, i foudn one that has a survey done and is in excellent condition, in my price range, comes with tons and tons and tons of things outfitting it, two sets of sails, dingy, life jackets, it was used for cruising up until last year. Resolved Question: Correct Wear of the Kilt again "Irish" Americans?

Why do "Irish" American Pipe Bands wear Scottish tartan, and not a "plain" one colour Irish Kilt , Saffron or St Patrick's Blue ? or Green? The inside and outside aprons are securely fastened by buckles, with the inner apron folding to the left, usually secured by one buckle, and the outer apron folding to the right, usually secured by two buckles (buckle the lower one loosely). Ladies' kilted skirts fold the opposite way. The kilt is not meant to be worn like blue jeans, down around the waist near the hips. The top of the waistband should be at your navel; military-cut kilts rise high enough to come to the wearer's bottom ribs. Highland dancers and Scottish country dancers often ask for a very high rise so that when they raise their hands above their heads, tartan is still seen beneath the jacket instead of a white shirt front. The lower edge of the inner apron should not be visible. If the inner apron consistently shows from beneath the outer apron, you'll need to tighten the strap on your left hip, even if it means cutting away the buckle and moving it back a few inches. The lower edge of the kilt should break somewhere between the middle and top of the kneecap. Above the knee, and it's not a kilt, but a Catholic school-girl skirt. Below the knee, and it becomes a tea-length dress. The apron should be centered and the hem should appear even from front to rear and side-to-side. If you wear a kilt pin, the proper place to wear it is three inches from the bottom of the kilt and three inches inward from the right side of the apron. The kilt pin should only go through the top apron and not be pinned to the bottom apron. Any variation in this general area is considered OK, and if you have a double thickness on the right side of the apron, you might affix it to that area. As with the sgian dubh and the sporran, the kilt pin should be appropriate for the level of dress and the occasion. Keep in mind that kilt pins can become snagged upon all sorts of objects, potentially tearing the outer apron. Is this not enough question for you?
