History of the Kilt
A great number of South Africans know “The Kilt” but not its ancient history. Here is a short history for those who have asked. I have attached a photo of what the kilt used to look like and one of me wearing a more “modern and traditional” version. There are many versions of The Kilt today……Traditi

Open Question: What about white bridesmaid dresses with Black sashes?
I can't choose wedding colours because I don't know what colour my Fiances Kilt will include its a bit too early because we will be hiring there isn't a tartan associated with the surname either as far as I know. I thought about having white dresses with a black sash and then when I finally know the colours I can buy flowers in the kilt colours to tie it all together... I could always replace the sash colours once I know.
I also would definately consider black bridesmaid dresses with really bright cheerful flowers etc but I don't want to offend guests. I personally think black is smart/classy i don't want it to look gothic would just be manicured nails, bright flowers maybe bright shoes.
I need suggestions in tying bridesmaid dresses to kilts/continuing with wedding preparations without knowing the kilt colours! Should I just pick colours and hope they match?
Or would a black and white theme be really cool? and it will be broken up a bit with the tartans and no I don't mind other girls wearing white!
Of course it's the man thats important!! thats a bit of a stupid comment. Shall I just sit around and hope someone plans my wedding for me then?? Im simply making choices and asking for advice/suggestions along the way.
I'm not a mean person but you are entitled to believe what you wish. Yes I am sitting but I am planning my wedding I don't think that comment was as clever as you hoped.
This isn't about insults and trying to make anyone look bad, I just asked for some suggestions and you really put me down for it thers nothing more important to the man, but if I didn't make plans for the wedding I wouldn't have the joy of marrying him! So there wasn't really a need to belittle my question to big yourself up.
nothing more important than the man**
I was shocked you implied that I thought the man wasn't the most important thing im not insulting anyone at all :).I can't stop you calling me ugly although I feel it's quite unkind, the question wasnt about what im going to wear either. I actually appreciate the input of a lot of yahooers! I cant insult you at all because i don't know you so I wish you every success :)

moreResolved Question: How many Israelis stayed in Israel after the Assyrian exile?
In 722 B.C.E., the northern Kingdom of Israel was conquered by Assyria . And here the historians inform us that the “population was driven to Captivity”. The population of the Northern Kingdom was at that time more than 3 million people. How many soldiers would be needed to escort a crowd of prisoners of just a hundred people from , let´s say, Israel to their new “place of residence” in Assyria? Three soldiers at least. And for the three millions of prisoners? And to drive the prisoners from another place to the newly conquered land? Or the Assyrian Kings just left it empty?
Of course not, the Kings of Assyria were not that stupid. They took as captives only the nobility, craftsmen, writers – and others were left where they were and the only difference for them was the appearance of the strange men who came to collect taxes.
Assyrian cuneiform mention 27,290 captives were taken from Samaria, the capital of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, by the hand of Sargon II. Sargon records his first campaign on the walls of the royal palace at Dur-Sarraku (Khorsabad):
In my first year of reign *** the people of Samaria *** to the number of 27,290 ... I carried away. Fifty chariots for my royal equipment I selected. The city I rebuilt. I made it greater than it was before. People of the lands I had conquered I settled therein. My official (Tartan) I placed over them as governor.
So, the total number of the captives driven to captivity from the Kingdom of Israel was some 40,000 people at best. Many also fled south to Jerusalem, which appears to have expanded in size fivefold during this period, requiring a new wall to be built, and a new source of water (Siloam) to be provided by King Hezekiah. But Millions of the Israelis stayed where they lived: in Israel.
Dan Dan, you chose the double nick because you´re double stupid? Then add another, third "Dan" to your nick; your stupidity does not enter in two parts of it.
John K, your "bro" is scratching his back against the pole of the pigsty, grunting contentedly. Go join him.

moreResolved Question: What do you think of my writing?
Right, this is the prologue of my story. It's my first draft and I'm currently on chapter 15 but I'm suddenly interested to know what you think of my writing. So, here goes...
When people speak of the best cities to visit in the world, they may mention the combination of art and culture and the sensual romantic atmosphere that make Paris such an elegant place. Perhaps they’d describe the exhilaration experienced whilst travelling down a New York boulevard. They’d never talk about Swansea, an odd, vast city, located in South Wales.
Maybe I fell in love with Swansea whilst standing on the shore with my trousers rolled up to my knees and my toes soaked by fresh, cool sea water that rhythmically moved to and from the fine, gold sand and the smooth pebbles. My parents were sat on a tartan rug, as far away from the sea as possible and my brother was playing football with some boys he had met on the beach. It was the summer before the beginning of my GSCE course and I had taken the opportunity to reminisce about my past.
I grew up in a small but busy English city that didn’t often offer me a moment of contemplation or solitude. By no means was I a misanthropist – I enjoyed the company of my friends and their amusing jokes and stories – but I had a habit of mentally reliving past events and envisaging the future. Mama and Daddy said that I needed to be more social. That particular day, I was wondering about the “contradictory nature of human beings” and the existence of love so profound that “one would give their own life for the object of their desires”. The latter was just an over exaggeration of love that only ever occurred in fairy stories. I suppose these thoughts were deep for even me. A bit pompous, really. The only reason I considered them was because I picked up the ideas from a psychology magazine that decorated to tables from a café that I performed in on my last day in Wales.
My father, a keen guitarist like myself, encouraged me to play a couple of instrumentals I’d written at a venue of my choice. Of course, the venue had to be as conservative and as clean as the environment my brother and I had been raised in: we were Muslims, and although my parents were liberal enough to allow me to learn a musical instrument and attend co – education school, they made sure that my brother and I kept in touch with our Pakistani roots. We had learnt to read the Arabic, we were forbidden to have boyfriends or girlfriends and we ate Halal meat. And for the first fourteen years of my life, I was content with this religious foundation.
I wisely chose Café Maze. No alcohol was served and cigarettes were never smoked here. Customers consisted of art students dressed in bright, quirky colours and patterns, who listened to indie rock and talked about environmental issues. Apart from them, a few teenagers would bustle into the eatery, clutching bags full of entertainment items and clothes and they’d discuss a man named Pablo, with the art students. Whoever that was. On the surface, Maze seemed to be an appropriate place.
At 7 o’ clock, the coffee house was lit only by three spotlights that were arranged on the ceiling. There were five mahogany tables in the entire café: four circled the other. The teenagers preferred to sit at these tables whilst the civilised art students lounged lazily on the polished black sofas on either end of the room.
A potent refreshing aroma of coffee wafted into my nose and cleared my lungs and the continuous chatter filled me with sudden nervousness. I fiddled with microphone, wrenching it down so that it was level with my acoustic guitar. It let out a loud, screeching noise. Silence took hold of the ambience and as I tuned my guitar I could feel dozens of pairs of eyes staring intently at me, waiting for me to produce some melodic noise from my instrument.
I began to pick the strings. I had been inspired to write the piece upon my stay at Swansea. The tension faded as my performance progressed but the focus of the audience seemed to increase with every note that I fretted. I finished playing. The room broke into applause and I even received a few whistles. The silence had been driven out of the room and the audience returned promptly to their conversations so that my next piece acted more as background music.
Later, the café owner, a small plump man, with a heavy Liverpudlian accent, handed me a business card.
“Fayha, if ya ever need a bit o’ cash, then ya can always come ‘n’ perform ‘ere for a few quid.” He chuckled.
My father joked about becoming a street musician. I laughed and convinced myself that I was far too ambitious for that and that I’d rather enter a professional and more stable career. However, I kept the card as a souvenir and as I hoped to return to Swansea again, I observed the peculiar contrast of the winding streets and the houses tucked in the valley opposite the shopping centres and commercial billboards.

moreResolved Question: Will the Kilt become apart of the American Clothing?
Within the last 20 years, there has been some changes within many in America. It started during the culture awareness of the late 1980's, when people started wearing bits of clothing from what would have been from their known old country, so some started wearing African garbs, and some funny hats.
Any ways, some Americans picked up on the Kilts, but just for special occasions. So much so, that they were showing back up in Scotland to annoy the local clans with their ignorance of clan etiquette.
Then in the late 1990's, the kilt was modified to no longer be Scottish. But a rough new American version that has pockets, non-tartan, and more durable than the Scottish woolen kilts.
In the early 2000's, the kilt begins to be massed made by a number of kilt makers within America, unlike in Scotland where the handmade kilt is preferred, and more expensive for that reason. Americans make their kilts cheaper and keep the utility.
Now in the late 2000's, many Kilted guys are talking with their employer about wearing their kilts in the office, and redevelop dress codes that are technically discriminatory to men in kilts, where women can go between their two types, but men have to stay in slacks.
Now in 2010, there is a bold initiative for the US Post Service to have kilts officially on their designated clothing through voting that will happen soon at the national union level.
So kilts seem to becoming more American, as Scottish barely don theirs anymore. Do you think one day that Americans will be better known for the Kilt than Scotland?
Wow. I love it. Only a handful of Scots wear their kilts every so often, maybe less than five times a year, and then there are all these crazy Americans, no where near mainstream, but far more than the Scots, and somehow some get offended that they need to retain the kilted title, which ironically is not their, but imported and perfected to their history, which is mostly worn in historical fashion. Now we have modern Americans in modern kilts. I do not see the 'Never" statement here.

We want girls to do better than boys at school so they get better careers.
Curriculums are geared to make boys bored and disassociate with education. We have removed sports lessons and increased reading time. We have made complicated subjects like maths and physics simple and we over emphasize spelling and punctuation as a contributor to the final marks.
We give coursework a high rating in its contribution to the final mark, knowing that boys in the 15-18 year old range are busy learning about life and often do their coursework quickly.
We make exam questions simple and emphasize the discussions of emotions rather than require facts and the demonstration of the understanding of these facts with no wrong answer, e.g. "How do you think Bonnee Prince Charlie would have felt about wearing tartan"?
moreResolved Question: Why are all Scottish people Master of the Kilt?
I have found this interesting bias, especially with Americans, that they automatically assume all Scottish people know all that there is about the Kilts, based merely that's it's their national dress.
I live here in Texas, and I find many Texans who do not know a lick about hats, boots and more importantly how to wear, when to wear, and what looks silly. That is not hard to surmise. There are fakes and phonies in every crowd.
Now to merge the idea, I love kilts. I have studied their history in more than a dozen purchased books, blog extensively, follow forums and know the vast array of myths, know how to make my own, have made three so far with my own two hands, yet when in discussions, people will take what a Scottish person's opinion over a Non-Scottish person, even if the Non-Scot has an extensive background, and the Scottish person is reaching and pulling out myths that they heard in passing to sound like they know what they are talking about.
The reason I say is that I have extended family that knows my interest. I have sat down and talked kilts for hours on end, and then one meets a Scot at the bar, and comes back with all kind of hogwash that I laughed at, especially about how only Clan Families can wear Clan Tartan. Many believe this, but find the treaty that says this, and I will recant. There are only about half a dozen restricted tartans like the Balmoral, and no will stop you from wearing any registered tartan, even restricted if you talk to the right people. Any ways my family sided with the Scot. After all, he's from Scotland. I am from Texas...

In my town of 36,000 Only me and one other guy wear kilts. I know I am Scottish, but unfortunately I can not contact anyone from that side of the family to learn my clan. The only last name on that side of the family is Frost, if anyone happens to know. >.< Any way, the question is, do Clans get mad when you wear their tartan?
moreResolved Question: Are the Scotish Nationalists untrustworthy?
With a unique 'Hung' Parliament evolving in the UK and could go any way. Those of us with long memories back to 1979 , when the SNP voted against the then Labour Government , which , in turn , lead to 13 years of Thatcherism (the nasty party). This lead them to be dubbed 'The Tartan Tories' and I still think that they would do the same again.
moreResolved Question: A question about my family history?
I was wondering if anyone could help me find information on the 'Lisle' family in England. I've tried on google but all I get are those bullshit scam websites that try to sell you 'family crests'. Also could you help me research the Baxter clan in Scotland (tartan colours and all that) and the surname Ivers (Ireland). Thanks.
moreResolved Question: What are the best sprinting shoes and what can I do to make myself faster?
Okay, I'm training for the 100m, 200m and 800m races that are coming up in around 6-7 weeks. I'm 14 years old (male) and much better at sprinting than long distance - so 100m and 200m are my favorites. And my game-plan for the 800m is to stick with the pack and then out-run them at the end =) at the moment the only running shoes I have are old joggers that are slightly too big, so I've got room in the front and my toes move a bit. They don't feel very good for sprinting - and I can't be bothered buying spikes. The track I'm racing on is a tartan track - is there a pair of running shoes good for sprinting, without spikes? Does it matter about the design of the shoe, or does it matter about how light the shoe is and how well it fits you?
And any tips on how to increase my speed? At the moment I'm just sprinting 100m a couple of times and doing laps and stretches.. nothing specific. I've been told that doing squats and lunges help.. any other tips? Thank you!
moreResolved Question: Travelling to Scotland for a wedding - fashion advice?
I am going to Scotland in July for my cousin's wedding. I have a really nice black dress - I can't afford to buy a new one. I thought black is a bit dreary for a summer wedding, but I was wondering how could I brighten myself up?
I was thinking about wearing a tartan ribbon around my waist, but I needed more ideas and I didn't know what else to do?
Any ideas?
moreResolved Question: Why did the SFA give Gordon Smith a £50k pay off considering he Quit his post?
GORDON SMITH fled Hampden last night with £50,000 and a withering blast at his critics.
Smith has quit as SFA chief executive after a stormy three-year reign.
The ex-Rangers star, who was embroiled in several high-profile rows, walked away from Scottish football's top job with a thinly-veiled attack on his enemies.
He said: "Stepping down is something I've considered for some time. The majority of people I have encountered in the job have been extremely warm, friendly and hospitable towards me.
"Inevitably, there has been a minority who have been less than supportive.
"It is not purely personal reasons, or the element of negativity I have experienced, that has made me leave the job.
"It is a combination of factors.
"Ultimately, I feel the timing is right."
Smith has locked horns with Rangers over his handling of the Cameron House booze scandal.
He faced flak from the Tartan Army over Scotland's fixture schedule for the ill-fated World Cup qualifying campaign.
And only last week he faced accusations his position had become "untenable" over the Robbie Winters diving row.
Smith alerted SFA president George Peat of his wish to quit at the weekend.
And yesterday he left Hampden for the final time after lengthy negotiations over a pay-off.
SunSport understands Smith has pocketed around £50,000 and penned a confidentiality clause.
He has promised NOT to go public on the disputes which forced him out.
Peat, who'll assume executive powers until a replacement is found, is also contractually bound not to comment.

hundred billion dollar budget surplus. Granted, we should be a little mad about Michael Steele spending party money on bondage nightclubs, but that’s because he is spending money that isn’t his. Americans seem to get mad over all the wrong things. But I digress.
The girl in the corner gave a neat little achoo which almost seemed to herald the entrance of another person entering the office. She looked to be about late fifties, early sixties. She was carrying a young child, not anymore than three, in her arms. Her balding hubby followed her in. She had short brown hair and was sporting a beige jacket and large brimmed hat – even went so far as to complete the look with some white sunglasses. She wore darker brown pants and black dress shoes. Her husband wore your classic Levi blue jeans, brown boots (by the look of them steel toed), and a plaid shirt, probably a Stewart tartan. Atop his head lay a quirky fez. They too had a verbal battle with the Receptionist. They want to see the doctor desperately; they think the kid’s arm is broken.
“Sorry lady, Doc ain’t in right now,” she muttered heartlessly, “Feel free to enjoy all the wonderful pleasures of the waiting room though,” she added sarcastically.
The couple walked toward the seats and sat next to me, save one empty chair as a polite buffer. “Bitch…” I heard her rasp under her breath as she sat down. She seemed spunky. Alas, the room was once again filled with silence. It is hard to pinpoint what sort of silence it was. In the end, it seemed to be a silence of four parts. There was the awkward silence after the exchange with the Receptionist. There was the dull dreary silence of much too much time passing with much too little action. There was the silence of thoughts. Each person was absorbed in there own world thinking thinking thinking. About what I cannot say. Lastly, there was the heavy silence of anxiety and anticipation that sets in right when one has that intuitive feeling that the silence will be broken. It was.
The lady turned her brimmed hat adorned head and kicked this greeting right out into the open, “Hi, I’m Bethany. You can call me Beth,” she extended her hand. I took it. “Charmed.” I was so stunned by her outgoingness that I couldn’t manage to utter simple pleasantries. “And you would be?”
I sat there dumbstruck for a moment then regained my composure. “Kelsey. Kelsey MacGregor.”
“Well then Kelsey. This here is my hubby, Rick.”
“How do you do?” Rick took off his fez and gave an elegant little bow. Or at least as elegant as one could get while trying to relax in a seat.
“Well Rick, honestly I’m a little irked,” I admitted. Somehow these old folks were making me feel comfortable. They made me feel like I meant something to them. I know we hadn’t spoken much, but I was sure even then that these were people to whom I could talk. “The Receptionist is a genuine Nurse Ratched, wouldn’t you say?”
“Ah yes, certainly. She has either has a bone to pick or a stick up her ass. Either way, I agree,” Bethany said heartily and intentionally loud enough for the Receptionist to hear. I caught the Receptionist give an exaggerated roll of the eyes.
“Must be a thorny stick,” Rick added. I cracked a smile; my first smile in a long time.
I liked these people; Rick and Bethany. In a veritable attempt to be social, I asked, “What’s the little tyke in for?”
“Oh, the little squirt? This is my daughter, Missy’s, son, Ricky. Named after his dear old gramps,” she shot Rick Senior an affectionate glance, “We think his arm is broken,” she continued. I noticed how she was gingerly supporting it.
I addressed Little Ricky, “Well you’re certainly being brave about this ordeal, aren’t you? Look at him, he hasn’t even grimaced. You’ll make a tough man some day.” The tyke seemed to give some gargle. The closest thing I could liken it to would be some sort of chortle. “How old is he?”
“He just turned two.”
“Pray tell, how did he break his arm?”
“Well, we are not exactly sure. We have a couple of theories. Here’s the skinny…”

moreResolved Question: Should I tuck my polo shirt into my school skirt? All advice is appreciated!?
For school, we have white polo shirts and green/blue/gold tartan skirts. We also have pullover woolly navy blue jumpers and blue/white/gold spray jackets. We can wear navy blue pants in winter, but most girls wear skirts. Anyway, I'm quite curvy on top, and when I wear my white polo shirt over my (thick) school skirt, it's really unflattering! I look fat and frumpy. But when I tuck it in, it cinches in my waist and is more flattering, but no one at my school wears theres tucked in. It's not that it's not allowed, but no one does it. Should I do it?

moreResolved Question: Wearing a kilt to the school prom?
Im 18 and have always wanted to wear a kilt at an event outside a wedding. I decided to rent a kilt with full suit to match, however, I live in the north of England and not Scotland. My last name is Stewart and my family does go back to Scottish Stewart heritage after my grandparents. I rented a Royal Stewart tartan kilt because of the family history but that aside, I have asked a few people about it and it seems im the only one wearing a kilt.
Alot of people have said I will be made fun of but to be honest Im going to have a good time with my girlfriend. My girlfriend hates it aswell as she believes that she will be embarrased because people will make fun of me. Im 6'5 with dark hair but am fairly muscular so I really dont understand why she is to be embarrassed.
Any thoughts would be a great help. Do you think Im a fool for wanting to be different?
Many thanks

I was going to do red and black but i really had my heart set on purple or green or both. Do i have to match his kilt since he will be the only one wearing it? what would you recomend! Weddings in 4 months! AHHH
moreResolved Question: What's up with the Gay thing being associated with Kilts?
When I read Kilt questions, many always talk about the gay factor. Why?
I am a Kilted guy, in Texas, and not Gay. I am married, and prefer boobs. I am not closeted, or even curious about being Gay. I do see myself a little on the kinky side, and always joke about having a threesome with other girls, but besides that, I am not that sexually crazy.
Then my wife has a number of gay friends from college. All hate the kilt. Think it's ghastly fashion from a weird time in history. I am also on number of forums with the Kilt, and most of the guys are straight there. In fact it seems to track the same way in society, always less than 10% who are gay are kilted, and most of those guys are Scottish. It would be very doubtful if that same gay guy in America would not be kilted.
Then there is that whole cross-dressing thing that gets brought up as well, but a man's kilt is nothing like a woman's skirt. For one there if nine times more fabric in the traditional versions. There are no prints of flowers or pastels. It's always dark plaids (tartan), blacks, and mustard brown colors. So the kilt is not worn the way a woman would wear her skirt.
