Resolved Question: Help in making Role Play Game - kind of desperate?

Hey I have been playing text based role play games for two and a half years. I have been interested in creating my own, and now is the time I am interested. I know what I need - but I don't know how to do it. I understand learning to write a script for a mud could take months, years even, but I don't know WHERE to learn. Is there an online website that could teach me? I have ideas, webhosts, files in place, I just need to learn the basics such as (Relevant) PHP, MySql and Perl. I know w3schools but that doesnt teach anything relevant to making a text-based rpg. Help? Or if there is any rpg admins could they be kind enough to put me on an admin role so I can slowly get used to practical rpg?  more

Resolved Question: Which programming language(s) should I consider learning?

I'm seriously considering teaching myself a programming language in my free time (hence as a hobby) with the purpose of acquiring more pc skills and potentially taking it further later on. I have previously dabbled into Python, Perl, some Ruby and Haskell, and, more recently, Common Lisp. I am wondering which language may make a good first choice? My aim is not to write operating systems or to write advanced networking apps and I'm not interested in languages that are primarily used for web development, server-side scripting or UNIX system administration (thus no C/C++ - at least, not for now). I'd just like to learn a language that is powerful yet newbie-friendly and enables me to learn the basics to develop my own applications; in short: general purpose. It doesn't need to be a hugely popular language, as long as it has good documentation and isn't too obscure. It would also be nice if the programming language (1) has a good API for writing GUI apps, and (2) is fully supported on the Windows platform, aside from UNIX(-like) systems such as BSD or Linux, with free compilers being available for Windows. (I do have a lot of experience with Linux and BSD systems, but I'm not interested in switching anymore - just running them under Qemu). Good support for text manipulation would be nice, as I'm unlikely to write anything very mathematical. Thanks for your suggestions!  more

Resolved Question: Perl or Python?

Which language would you recommend? I want to learn programming basics. I have tried to learn C++, but have had a very hard time. Some say that learning higher level language then C(++) first is better. I am also a Linux Nut, and like to become a master of scripting and the command line. I have already become swayed to Python, because I have heard it is a cleaner more straight forward language. Your thoughts are appreciated. C++ is something I need to learn in my College Degree. Perl or Python is something I will do on my own before I retake my Beginning C++ class . I've seen many sources talk about Perl in Linux scripting, can Python be used the same way?  more
