Travel Deals From San Francisco Questions and Answers
Resolved Question: What is australia like?
I am from San Francisco, California and I would love to visit Australia..right now I am looking for some good deals on ticket prices through sta travels and other such places that find you good flight deals. Right now, I have travelled throughout europe(england, france, spain, italy, germany, switzerland, austria, hungary, and the czech republic) and through asia(india, hong kong, south korea, and singapore)..how does australia compare to that I know the big cities in australia are sydney, melbourne, and supposedly the gold coast is quite well known. What's sydney like? the gold coast? melbourne? and where can i get to hold a koala or go on a kangaroo safari? and are Australian girls pretty like italian and french girls? moreVoting Question: Last minute plane ticket?

Anyways-are there airlines where they sell last minute, and i mean Last minute deals for flights like standby? i need VERY cheap tickets to australia because the flights now are very pricey. I will appreciate a detailed and long list of pros and cons (like, 15 for each), and please, make sure they're considerable. Here are a few I can think of. Do you agree with them? If you think they're incorrect, just tell me. Pros: 1. Lots to do in the region (e.g. museums, sports, shows, events, outdoor activities) 2. World-class culture 3. Transportation hub, both by car and airplane 4. Robust public transit system Cons: 1. Brutal Winters 2. Cost of living 3. Bad traffic, especially on expressways Also, there are some which I'm not sure about. Would you consider these pros and cons true? 1. Distinct seasons. True? 2. Lots of scenery. True? 3. Interesting blend of the old and new (e.g. Navy Pier, Wrigley Field, Chicago Board of Trade). True? Another question, during most of the year, flights to/from Philadelphia and Chicago and vice versa depart every hour. Since Chicago is about 800 miles away, how much hassle would I have to go through to visit my family? How expensive are the tickets are on average during both the off-peak and peak season? Also, one of the alternatives is Amtrak, which takes 17 hours. Some people claim it's no cheaper than the airline, including the luxuries, for example, the sleeper car. Is that true, in all cases, or something else, like some cases? I also have a weather-related question which I couldn't fit in the subject line. My Aunt Paula claims Chicago vs. Boston, I'd be much happier in Boston, primarily due to weather. Can people who move to Chicago deal with the weather? Also, even though the winters are brutal, in the summer, are there still common summer activities, for example, state parks, pools, etc.? Also, although Chicago's beaches are on Lake Michigan and not on an ocean, are people still satisfied with their experience? I know I may have asked a lot of questions, moving far from my family is very difficult, although that's what many people do. Chicago is isolated, unlike Boston, Washington DC, NYC, etc. To be a tourist if you live in Chicagoland, you have to travel a distance. Do people still tour destinations in Chicago (e.g. Canada, NYC, San Francisco, Mexico)? Despite my account is configured not to allow email, for this question, I will allow it. I need to do a compare and contrast essay for The Great Gatsby vs the Pursuit of Happyness that deals with the American Dream. I need help with Comparing and Contrasting Success between two characters. (2 from each book for each point) I already used Wealth and Family as other themes that create an image of the American Dream. Here's my paragraph for wealth (including thesis): PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the two works, The Great Gatsby and The Pursuit of Happyness, comparisons and contrasts appear evident through characters’ encounters. Through these obstacles, the themes of wealth, family and success, an image of the American Dream is created. In both The Great Gatsby and The Pursuit of Happyness, wealth is a major component that contributes to how the American Dream is perceived. In the comparison of two main characters, Nick Carraway and Chris Gardner, the reader and audience sees how wealth surrounds their lives, despite them having no major part of it. Nick Carraway travels overseas to America for a better life, and becomes envious of the level of wealth he sees when he visits Tom and Daisy Buchanan in West Egg. In The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris Gardner finds himself in a struggle to get by his financial troubles, despite living in San Francisco, a very expensive and wealthy city. Gardner’s motivation and refusal to give up is lead by his deep desire for wealth, which he relentlessly tries fighting for throughout the featured film. On the contrary, we as readers and viewers can see how two characters differ in regards to wealth. Jay Gatsby, the novel figure and important character is depicted as a very wealthy man with an enormous home. “Or, rather, as I didn’t know Mr. Gatsby, it was a mansion inhabited by a gentleman of that name” (Fitzgerald 11). Chris Gardner, on the other hand, is a poor man who is forced out of his home during two instances, one which makes him have to sleep in the washroom of a subway because he fails to pay his rent. Evidently, wealth is something everyone would like to have and it is essential to gain in order to pursue one’s American Dream. Now i need one for success.. PLEASE HELP moreResolved Question: Anyone have any travel ideas for August?
Ok, so I got suckered (kinda) into a timeshare with RCI. I can stay in Cancun, Cabo, or Domincan Republic for 3 weeks out of the year (for 26 years).... but I also get points with RCI for extra vacations. It's a pretty good deal, but I am having trouble on deciding where to go. My girlfriend and some other friends are in college, so they can only go on vacation around mid December/ January. Or in July and August. I want a place to go with my friends. None of us have very much money, but essentially the hotel would be paid for by me, so the only thing we have to worry about is airfare... Europe is probably out of the question for now... although I would like to go back some day. We are from the San Francisco area if that helps anyone. I'm tired of San Francisco, L.A. and Las Vegas. Personally, I like relaxing vacations, like staying at a resort.... When I type in Hawaii, I can only find places to stay at Kapaa, Kailua-Kona, Koloa, Lihue, and Princeville. I've never been to Hawaii, so I don't know if any of these places are worth going to.... or where the better areas are. moreResolved Question: What are your week 3 predictions?
Here are mine, 10 points for who ever gets the most. Tie breaker is monday night score. Jacksonville @ Houston - Texans looked pretty good last week, after a bad week 1. I don't think the Jags are moving in the right direction, I think Del Rio needs to go. I like the texans. Washington @ Detroit - The way washington played st louis last week it wouldn't surprise me if detriot gets its first win, but I think the skins defense will be able to keep that from happening. NY Giants @ Tampa Bay - The Giants are too much for Tampa, even at home. Green Bay @ St. Louis - The packers aren't very good, but the rams are terrible. Packers win. Cleveland @ Baltimore - Brady Quinn should really have no trouble finding Ed Reed for at least 2 TDs. The ravens should win by at least 4 TD's. Kansas City @ Philadelphia - I think Cassels return is good news for the Chiefs but they still don't match up welll against the eagles. I think the eagles win this one pretty easily. Atlanta @ New England - As a pats fan I might be a little biased, but I think some of the timing issues can be worked out this week and going up against a defense that's good but certainly not as good as what the Pats have dealt with and welker should be back giving the patriots formations with Both edelmen and welker at the same time for the first time this season. Brady should do pretty well. The Pats defense has looked presentable. They wont shut down the Falcon's offense but they can keep it somewhat reasonable. Patriots have only lost back to back games 2 times with brady starting, and at home I think they can eak this one out. Tennessee @ NJ Jets - The Jets defense is good against the pass, but didn't look good against the run. Pats ran 20 times for 83 yards, I expect the titans to run a lot against the jets and their defense should create some turnovers. I like the titans, even though they are on the road they don't want to go 0-3 in their division. San Francisco @ Minnesota - With Minnesota at home, I think they win. If this was a road game I would lean towards San Fran, but at home I think the Vikes hold out. New Orleans @ Buffalo - Buffalo just doesn't have the fire power to match New Orleans. Chicago @ Seattle - Chicago was able to upend the steelers, I think they can do the same against the seahawks. Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati - It wouldn't shock me if the Bengals pulled the upset at home. Pitt can't run, and they dont have troy back. But the steelers I think can squeek out a win here. Miami @ San Diego - The phins travelling across the country after monday night makes me lean towards San Diego. Neither team is very good, but a short week might be the difference. Denver @ Oakland - Boy this is tough, which team is worse the Broncos or the Raiders, they both know they have a shot at their division since no team there is good. I think the broncos defense has looked half way decent, and Orton hasn't made too many mistakes. I think the broncos win - hard one to call. Indianapolis @ Arizona - Tough game and a short week with more travel for the Colts. I don't think the colts defense is too good, and I think the Cards can outscore them. Carolina @ Dallas - Dallas is good, and their looking for a win at home after last week. The Panthers are hungry for a win, but Dallas is too. Dallas 31 Carolina 20 TSQUARE the broncos have played the bengals @ cincy and the browns. The raiders have played the chargers @ home and @ KC. Bengals are better than the Chargers and the Chiefs are better than the browns, so its a wash. moreResolved Question: What's the cheapest way to Western Europe from California?
I want to travel to Western Europe, preferably Amsterdam... I don't care when or how.. and from what airport (Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles) What's the cheapest way? Expedia seems to have the best deals, but it's too expensive, any ideas? moreResolved Question: Any last-minute travel deals to Atlanta from San Jose, Oakland, or San Francisco CA?
One of my closest high school friends just had emergency pen heart surgery. He is only 23! I need to get out to Atlanta from the bay area in CA ASAP. Does anyone know if there are any travel deals? Thanks :) moreResolved Question: Yet again, California or North Carolina?
California or Carolina? Alrighty then, I have the option to move to North Carolina or California. I have my immediate family on the East coast, but my best friend is out West. I can... 1. Move to CA and live with/split rent in a house and a back yard for my dog (but i have a husky so he would hate the heat) -Go to San Francisco State and study Marine Biology where I REALLY want to study it. (Monterrey isn't too far off) -Also, finally be with my Best Friend who I had to move from many years ago. -But i will be moving from Alabama (quite a move) -California is expensive -Though California has the beauty i miss from the West. The beaches, mtns, cliffs that would drop you into the ocean, THE OCEAN, and palm trees! haha OR North Carolina where there is also the beach, a GREAT marine biology univ/program, mountains, occasional palm tree, and living is way cheap! Family is out here, my dog would suffer mildly less from the heat.. -But those damn hurricanes. lol There's also another small twist... My boyfriend said he would move with me and "seal the deal" if I stayed in Alabama for ONE more year while he got his job situation together (They will transfer him after so many months). I finally got him to agree to North Carolina, and now I'm throwing California at him. He's not one to be picky about where he lives. All he wants to do is travel outside the US anyways, lol, so he doesn't see the point in moving across the country to a more expensive state, and where we don't have family. (At least he doesn't, I do) ---Idea--- Live somewhere reasonable with the main purposes of ME studying Marine Biology, being able to save for traveling abroad, and him having a school near by with his Major of choice (which you cannot guarantee unless you KNOW your damn major ahead of time. Another reason for the CA schools-every thing's available!) Then there's also, CA school tuition's are A LOT more expensive than a NC outta state tuition-just for ex. moreResolved Question: California or Carolina?

Are sanctuary cities putting citizens in danger by not checking the status of illegals who are caught by police? So you believe these cities are breaking the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIR)? What should happen to sanctuary cities who fail to comply with the law? Dave Gibson Norfolk Crime Examiner Cities which adopt illegal alien 'Sanctuary' policies are placing Americans in grave danger May 31, 10:15 AM · Add a Comment On October 22, 2008, the First District Court of Appeal for the State of California ruled that the San Francisco Police must follow state law which requires police officers to contact federal authorities when they arrest anyone for a narcotics violation, when they suspect the person to be either a legal or illegal alien. The appellate court ruling reversed a lower court decision which claimed that San Francisco police officers were not required to comply with California state law, when arresting someone they suspected to be a foreign national. The group Judicial watch filed the lawsuit against San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong, on behalf of San Francisco resident Charles Fonseca. Shortly after the ruling, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said: "This landmark ruling strikes at the heart of the sanctuary movement for illegal aliens. San Francisco and other sanctuary cities are not above the law. This court ruling exposes the lie behind the argument that state and local law enforcement cannot help enforce immigration laws." The particular law in question, which provided the basis for the lawsuit follows: Section 11369 of the Health and Safety Code (Section 11369) states: "When there is reason to believe that any person arrested for a violation [of any of 14 specified drug offenses] may not be a citizen of the United States, the arresting agency shall notify the appropriate agency of the United States having charge of deportation matters." This ruling now forces San Francisco´s police chief to become compliant with state law and direct her officers to report all suspects whose immigration status is in question, when that suspect is arrested for drug violations. Given the fact that 90 percent of the illegal drugs sold in this country are brought in from Mexico, this ruling promises to be very effective in dealing with Latin American drug gangs, now responsible for a great deal of violence in California and beyond.. In San Francisco, on June 22, 2008, three members of the Bologna family were gunned down by Salvadoran national and gang member Edwin Ramos. Tony Bologna, 48, and his sons Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16 were shot to death by Ramos as they sat in their car on a crowded street, in the city´s Excelsior District. Ramos who is a member of the notoriously violent drug gang known as MS-13, shot the Bologna family to death because Tony Bologna had temporarily blocked the car in which Ramos was traveling, as the two cars made their way through an intersection. The Bologna men were returning home from a family barbecue. As a juvenile, Ramos had committed felony attempted robbery and assault. Shortly after the shooting, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, Juvenile Probation Department officials, did not report Ramos to federal immigration authorities for possible deportation because of San Francisco´s stated sanctuary policy. The devastated wife and mother Danielle Bologna is now suing the city of San Francisco over the sanctuary policy , which contributed to the death of her family. Unfortunately, this ruling came too late to save the lives of the Bologna family, as well as thousands of other Americans who have lost their lives at the hands of illegal aliens. However, it is a positive step in forcing local elected officials to allow those sworn to "protect and serve" to actually do that for American citizens, and stop protecting those who enter this country only to prey upon us. Despite the rhetoric coming from many local officials claiming that they have no legal role in enforcing our immigration laws, that is simply a lie. In 1996 the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIR) was passed as a federal law which requires local governments to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (now part of the Department of Homeland Security). The local governments that have been enforcing their own sanctuary policy are actually defying this law. U.S. citizens have a right, according to the Constitution to expect to be protected from violations of federal law by foreign nationals who are not authorized to be in the country, without local police departments aiding and abetting these criminal aliens in their unlawful activities. Where were the drugs when the Bologna family were murdered? Are you saying if Americans would lay off drugs, there would be no illegal problem and they would all return to where they belong? No more deaths? moreResolved Question: Would you recommend this to a conservative?
If you've been booed, hissed, heckled or hollered at ... scathed, scapegoated, scanted or screamed at ... if you're the bane of blue states and a gall to all the Greens ... you may be feeling lonely, but you're certainly not alone. Author Harry Stein has written a book for the elephant in the room. It's called "I Can't Believe I'm Sitting Next to a Republican," and he calls it "a survival guide for conservatives marooned among the angry, smug, and terminally self-righteous." Which is to say: liberals. "You deal with a lot of people who pretty much hate your guts" simply because you disagree with them, says Stein, who lives in a suburban liberal enclave a few miles north of Manhattan, which generally shades a deeper blue than the rivers that surround it. Stein, a lifelong New Yorker, traveled the country talking to other conservatives about their woes and prepared a primer for people who are locked in political exile in their very own homes. That ranges from parents worried about the education their kids are getting in elementary school ("always the Indians, everything the Indians") to professors struggling to make it in the ivory tower. The trouble can put relationships on the chopping block too. Stein, who details his own rocky relationship with his father in the book, found he wasn't the only one suffering. "I sat down with a bunch of conservatives in San Francisco, (including) a gay man who was talking about what it was like being a gay conservative in San Francisco. "He said it's a lot harder being conservative than it is to be gay," Stein told FOXNews.com. "His friends all turned on him." To avoid that kind of reception, some secret right-wingers take the extra step of pretending to be in lock-step with those around them. One studio executive he interviewed posted Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama signs around his office, depending won which way the political winds were blowing during the presidential campaign. Advertising his actual beliefs would have been deadly, Stein says. "People out there understand that those positions are really dangerous -- they jeopardize your livelihood." Stein, who has very harsh words for the left-wingers he calls narrow-minded and provincial, says he grew up inside the church of liberalism and knows it from the inside out. "Growing up liberal is kind of a birthright. You come of age with that, and everyone in your family feels the same way and everyone you know feels the same way -- and to break apart from that is like leaving behind a religion." But a funny thing happened on the way to the ashram -- Stein says he met a few conservatives and came to like them for their politeness and their personal values. "As a person on the left I never ran into people on the right. It was really a revelation, it was an eye-opener when I actually started getting to know conservatives, that they weren't monsters." Stein's survival guide is set to come out June 22, but the release party might have to be a little bit subdued. "We'll see if I survive the book," he told FOXNews.com. "My car was keyed once already during the campaign (because of a bumper sticker), so we have contingency plans for hiding it over the next few months." moreResolved Question: what is the CHEAPEST TICKET PRICE i could get to FRANCE?

I interviewed for a position where I found out I would be required to stay in San Francisco for one week every month (I live in detroit), on top of regular travel for trade shows and other things. I am not interested in traveling that much at all, and I feel like I would get sick of it very quickly. On top of that, a few of my former coworkers used to work with the woman who would be my manager and they have each warned me to be leary of her because shes crazy. I hate the job I am at now, and I don't want to get into another bad situation. I got called back for a second interview, and I don't want to blow off what could be a good opportunity, but I just hate the idea of traveling that much. So, since I, Dick Morris, was there for most of Bill's presidency and know them better than just about anyone, I need to make a few corrections; Bill says: Hillary never wanted to run for public office, but she did want to work at public service. The facts are: When Clinton was considering not running for another term as Governor of Arkansas in 1990, Hillary said she would run if he didn't. She and Bill even had me take two‚ surveys to assess her chances of winning. The conclusion was that she couldn't win because people would just see her as a seat warmer for when Bill came back licking his wounds after losing for president. So she didn't run. Bill did and won. There is no question she had her eye on public office, As opposed to service, longggg ago. Bill says: In law school Hillary worked on legal services for the poor. The facts are: Hillary's main extra-curricular activity in law school was helping the Black Panthers, on trial in Connecticut for torturing and killing a federal agent. She went to court every day as part of a law student monitoring committee trying to spot civil rights violations and develop grounds for appeal. Bill says: Hillary spent a year after graduation working on a children's rights‚ project for poor kids. The facts are: Hillary interned with Bob Truehaft, the head of the California Communist Party. She met Bob when he represented the Panthers and traveled all the way to San Francisco to take an internship with him. Bill says: Hillary could have written her own job ticket, but she turned down all the lucrative job offers. The facts are: She flunked the DC bar exam and only passed the Arkansas bar. She had no job offers in Arkansas and only got hired by the University of Arkansas Law School at Fayetteville because Bill was already teaching there. She only joined the prestigious Rose Law Firm after Bill became Attorney General and made partner only after he was elected governor. Bill says: President Carter appointed Hillary to the Legal Services Board of Directors and she became its chairman. The facts are: The appointment was in exchange for Bill's support for Carter in his 1980 primary against Ted Kennedy. Hillary became chairman in a coup in which she won a majority away from Carter's choice to be chairman. Bill says: She served on the board of the Arkansas Children's Hospital. The facts are: Yes she did. But her main board activity, not mentioned by Bill, was to sit on the Wal-mart board of directors, for a substantial fee. She was silent about their labor and health care practices as a Wal-Mart board member. Bill says: Hillary didn't succeed at getting health care for all Americans in 1994, but she kept working at it and helped to create the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) that provides five million children with health insurance. The facts are: Hillary had nothing to do with creating CHIP. It was included in the budget deal between Clinton and Republican Majority Leader Senator Trent Lott. I, Bill Morris, helped to negotiate the deal. The money came half from the budget deal and half from t he Attorney Generals' tobacco settlement. Hillary had nothing to do with either source of funds. Bill says: Hillary was the face of America all over the world. The facts are: Her visits were part of a program to get her out of town so that Bill would not appear weak by feeding stories that Hillary was running the White House. Her visits abroad were entirely touristic and symbolic and there was no substantive diplomacy on any of them. Bill says: Hillary was an excellent Senator who kept fighting for children's and women's issues. The facts are: Other than totally meaningless legislation like changing the names on courthouses and post offices, she has passed only four substantive pieces of legislation. One, set up a national park in Puerto Rico . A second provided respite care for family members helping their relatives through Alzheimer's or other conditions. And two were routine bills to aid 9-11 victims and responders which were sponsored by the entire NY delegation. Here is what bothers me more than anything else about Hillary Clinton. She has done everything possible to weaken the President and our country (that's you and me!) when it comes to the war on terror. 1. She wants to close GITMO & move the combatants to the USA where they would have access to our legal system. 2. She wants to eliminate the monitoring of suspected Al Qeada phone calls to/from the USA. 3. She wants to grant constitutional rights to enemy combatants captured on the battlefield. 4. She wants to eliminate the monitoring of money transfers between suspected Al Qeada cells & supporters in the USA . 5. She wants to eliminate the type of interrogation tactics used by the military & CIA where coercion might be used when questioning known terrorists, even though such tactics might save American lives. I can't think of a single bill Hillary has introduced or a single comment she has made that would tend to strengthen our country in the War on Terror. But, I can think of a lot of comments she has made that weakens our country & makes it a more dangerous situation for all of us........ She goes hand in hand with the ACLU on far too many issues where common sense is abandoned. She is a disaster for all Americans. moreResolved Question: Are Hillary supporters REALLY sure they want to support her?

I need your help. Typically I'm pretty good about finding good deals, but travelling on Memorial Day weekend is complicating things a bit. Also, the airport I'm flying into and the airport I'll be returning from are different...so I have to use the "multi-city" option wherever I try and look. So here's my travel agenda: Fly out 5/26 from Nashville (BNA) to San Diego (SAN). Return 6/3 from San Francisco (SFO) or San Jose (SJC) ...back to Nashville I don't know any "secrets" if they exist...so I'm trying best as I can to find good deals...any help?? moreResolved Question: What's the process for transiting/switching airlines in Heathrow when your bags are not checked through?
Hi. I will be traveling on British Airways (BA) from San Francisco to London Heathrow. There I have a 2.5 hour layover where I need to switch from my arrival in Terminal 1 to an Emirates flight in Terminal 3. Normally that wouldn't be a big deal. However, I've learnt that there is a high likelihood that British Airlines will NOT check the luggage all the way through to the final destination. So I may need to collect my bags, go through immigration/customs and then switch terminals and check in all over again with Emirates. Has anyone had to do this? how long did it take and what was the exact process? Did you literally have to go through arrivals section, go through immigration, customs, get on a transfer bus, etc. I'm very worried that 2.5 hours will no tbe enough for all that. Posted on Sun, Aug. 27, 2006email thisprint this Pa. soldiers return from border patrol By Barbara Barrett CDT Washington correspondent LOS ALGODONES, Mexico -- Not five minutes after the boatload of migrants slipped across the Colorado River at dusk, the "dogcatchers" arrived. First, U.S. Border Patrol trucks -- the ones migrants call dogcatchers -- tore down a dirt road and cut their headlights. Then a helicopter dipped and circled with deafening blades, its spotlights probing across the water and the mountainside, again and again and again. On the Mexican side, above the town of Los Algodones, Francisco Lopez watched and listened. For a month, he said, he has been waiting. Three times he almost crossed. "They're here day and night," said Lopez, 42, who traveled from the state of Michoacán, Mexico, hoping to reach New York. The show of force now includes about 6,000 National Guard troops. Almost 70 soldiers from Pennsylvania returned this month after two weeks in the Arizona desert. There, they set up observation points on a levee within sight of the border. They used binoculars and night vision goggles to spot movement. They helped catch at least 10 migrants. "It made you think, 'Yeah, you're here helping people out,'" said Capt. Brad Pierson, a State College resident and commander of the 28th Military Police Company, based in Johnstown and Greensburg. The Pennsylvanians saw tragedy among their own, too. Spc. Kirsten Fike, 36, of Warren, collapsed in her first hours working in the 104-degree heat. She died a day later at a Yuma, Ariz., hospital. An autopsy on the cause of her death was inconclusive. The deployment of guard troops is part of President Bush's Operation Jump Start, a project meant to discourage migrants from risking the dash into the United States. It's having results: The increased security is pushing migrants into the harsh desert and mountains, forcing more to use smugglers and leading those who are caught to make repeated attempts that sap their strength and savings each time. Many walk for days with little food or water. In July, an 11-year-old girl was found in cardiac arrest on a 108-degree day in the remote Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation. The girl, Olivia Nogueda, wearing pink sneakers and traveling with her older sister, was declared dead at the reservation hospital. In the following week, in two counties in eastern Arizona, seven other migrants died, including two women and a 12-year-old boy. Last year, as the Border Patrol increased enforcement around urban areas, more than 460 migrants died trying to cross the border, nearly half in Arizona. "The more difficult you make it for people to cross, the more people will die," said Joseph Nevins, spokesman for Tucson-based No More Deaths, a coalition of humanitarian border groups. In eastern Arizona, Pima County medical examiner Bruce Parks holds onto the bodies. He has more than 200 dating back to 2004. "It's obviously a terrible tragedy for relatively young people to be dying under these circumstances," Parks said, hours after an autopsy on 11-year-old Olivia. "This may be the year we see a downturn. It would be nice." In Pennsylvania, Pierson occasionally deals with illegal immigrants in his work as a state trooper. He said he knows little about the politics of immigration, but standing guard in Arizona made him wonder what drives migrants to take such risks. "Obviously they're crossing for a reason," Pierson said. "To me, it seems dangerous. They're crossing in the heat, in the desert. I think, how bad can it be in Mexico to even go through this, take these chances?" Word spread quickly throughout Mexico after Bush made his announcement this spring. "I read the newspapers," said Hector Encinas, 29, who lives in the Mexican town of San Luis Rio Colorado, just south of San Luis, Ariz. "It's more hard right now," said Encinas, standing near an opening in the border wall. "They got a fence, more soldiers, more Border Patrol." Guadalupe Murrieta, 45, washing dishes in her home nearby, said she never liked the migrants who wander through at night, making her fearful for her children and grandchildren. Now, she said, it's quieter. What sends migrants into the distance are the images of the National Guard standing watch. In San Luis, the Pennsylvania soldiers worked under camouflage nets, setting up observation points every half-mile on a levee near the Colorado River, above stretches of dirt and fields of tall, swaying grasses. It was maybe the third day on watch for the Pennsylvanians when, about 3 a.m., one of Pierson's soldiers spotted movement at the levee. Four people -- three women and a man -- had crawled through the grasses and were trying to dash across the levee and into a nearby neighborhood. The troops called Border Patrol. All four migrants were caught. A few nights later, another soldier spotted six more. "It's nice to see the results, to see that you're making a difference," Pierson said. "It was good for morale." Mostly, Pierson thinks the Pennsylvanians were a deterrent, frightening migrants from even making the attempt. In Mexico, some residents aren't so sure. Migrants pass through the cotton and alfalfa fields around Rebeca Moreno's store near Los Algodones, a quarter-mile from the Colorado River, ignoring the signs warning "Peligroso!" -- danger. Moreno walked though the back of her store to an open window. Pointing across the cotton field, she said in Spanish: There is the river. The migrants try to swim across. They're caught, sent home and try again. She pointed to a spot in the road. A man died right there, she said. On the dirt road in San Luis Rio Colorado, behind the border wall, men were checking their chances recently as evening drew near. They lit trash fires, hoping to obscure the heat of their bodies. One man shinnied up a wire to peek above the wall toward the levee; a few others pretended to fish in the canal. Nearby stood Ricardo Mann, 47, the heat of the flames at his back, considering the soldiers standing watch. "It's like another wall," Mann said. "A human wall." moreResolved Question: What's the best deal on flights?
