Resolved Question: Would a single mid 20s guy fit In in Santa Barbara?

I'm living in SF right now and considering moving to Santa Barbara & buying a home there. I've made a considerable amount of money as a startup techie so home price pretty much is not a concern for me. I am more concerned over the demographic in Santa Barbara as it's mostly college students and retirees from what i've heard and mostly white people and i'm asian. I prefer to live in Santa Barbara due to its beautiful scenery and the city's well maintenance with tax dollars. I'm just lucky enough to have the chance to own a home there and sit on the money that's most likely will continue to raise after the recession. Do you think it's a wise choice for me?  more

Resolved Question: Why is there so much ignorance about Italy?

I was talking to this girl from Santa Barbara CA, and she asked: "So, you Italians all need a boat. The rich ones all have a yatch, right?" And I was like "WHAT???" And she said: "Yeah I mean, you all must have those weird boats seen in movies, otherwise how could you ever move from one to another? How could you ever go to college, shopping, or to another city without a boat?" And everyone around her agreed. I am shocked. In Venezia there are these boats called GONDOLE, but not even there you use them to move yourself wherever you want. We have beautiful cities, streets, squares, EVERYTHING. It's unbelievable how much ignorance there is abroad about Italy. Why is there this common thought that the only things you find in Italy are Pizza, Pasta e Mafia? I'm sick about explaining everytime, and I feel offended. I've lived in Miami and in NY for three years and before moving I gathered information and everything I needed. Yes, but what do you care about my avatar? If you don't have a proper answer to my Q then mind your business Aww Kerri what a (L)  more

Resolved Question: College Assessment? Help!?

I'm a senior in high school as of right now, but I won't be for long. I've filled out the registration papers for SBCC (Santa Barbara City College), and I was just wondering, how much should I study for the assessment test? I'm pretty good at English, so I don't think I'll have to study for that, but Math on the other hand...the highest math class I ever took was Algebra 2 when I was a sophomore, then Accounting as a Junior, and I haven't been taking any math classes as a senior. I cannot remember any algebra or geometry whatsoever. I'm gonna be majoring in Studio Art, so, IDK...  more

Resolved Question: Communting into Los Angeles, Orange County or Ventura County?

I loved Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, I thought that area was beautiful but its too far away from the jobs in Los Angeles, so I'm thinking the O.C. or Ventura County? My boyfriend is from Europe and he is reluctant to live in So Cal, mainly because he thinks its all illegals and murderers, but where I was it was beautiful :) any good towns near to LA but far enough from all the bad sides of the city.  more

Resolved Question: Best places to live...?

I will be graduating soon with an MBA and I am ready to move out of the midwest (ish area). I lived in California when I was younger and love it there but it is just sooo expensive. My wants are the usual- arts& entertainment, shopping, older neighborhoods, newer neighborhoods (something with establishment, I don't like neighborhoods with row after row after row of the same home... I like diversity). My ultimate spot (in the future) would be a home on a tree-lined street (with sidewalks) in a city that has a farmers market, some kind of outdoor activities (parks, lakes, rivers... something outside!), basically an active community and one with a variety of things to do. I am not afraid of winter but a long one might depress me a little and my hair does not do well in humidity (although I could deal if the place was worth it). I don't expect to live in a community that has all of these things going for it and be cheap, but I want something reasonable, aka not Manhattan or Santa Barbara. Oh, and nowhere in Kansas, Texas or Oklahoma :-P  more

Resolved Question: Should I go to NYU? I'm second-guessing myself...?

So I got into NYU and at first I was thrilled, it's an amazing school smack dab in the middle of the city, where possibilities are endless. I would have access to amazing food, culture, concerts, internships, landmarks, etc. But then I started thinking about all the things I would be missing... I always wanted a traditional college experience: a beautiful campus with a quad, sports teams, school spirit, parties, sororities, guys, and a warmer climate. And every school I applied to held these qualities, except NYU. NYU was initially my 3rd choice, and it's the best school I got into. NYU is the complete opposite of what I thought of as my perfect college experience, however. There is no campus, barely any sports, I hear there's no school spirit, barely any parties (I would possibly have to get a fake ID in order to party at clubs/bars), no greek life, most of the guys are gay, and it gets pretty freezing. I feel terrible for saying these things, but it's in the back of my head and I'm wondering if I'm making the wrong choice. I was also accepted to: UM, UF, Tulane and UC Santa Barbara (and I already informed UM, Tulane, and UCSB that I wouldn't be attending). I don't know what to do, am I making the wrong choice? * I applied to other selective universities (UCLA, Berkeley, UNC, USC, Vanderbilt and Emory) but I got rejected from all of them. And I received most of my information from online studentsrating websites, and I read about 25 reviews of NYU by students there that made me shudder, they are all miserable and are trying to transfer out of what they call a 'hell hole.'  more

Resolved Question: RE:Please help me pick a college!!!please!?

i just cant seem to make up my mind :/. i wish i could go to all of them if you had to pick from these three, which would you choose? UC San Diego-----highest ranked out of my options. great city. great weather. BUT the most expensive. Also, its the furthest away! a good 10-12 hours by car! and flying back and forth would be expensive. id only get so see my family on holidays. And i heard the social life there sucks. UC Santa Barbara----i really like this school! it is just soo beautiful. I love the atmosphere, the beach, the weather. Its like living in paradise. Its also a bit far from home, but not too far. BUT, it does have the "party school "rep, eventhough it still has a good rank. and the people there are just so chill! UC Davis---its the closest to home. 2 hours away. its in a tiny town, with lots of cows. BUT, the campus is like its own little city. i have a lot of friends there. its also highly regarded accidemically. the social scene isnt as crazy as UCSB, but there its good enough. just please give me your two cents! I am from Ca btw. (northern cal btw) im majoring in English Lit & i do like to party. i come from a very sheltered home, so i look forward to being able to party. but, at the same time, i am responsible and i know when its time to get to work.  more

Resolved Question: Do you agree with this former senior CNN correspondent that illegal immigration is undermining American values?

"Illegal Hispanic immigration is undermining American values." Illegal immigration is causing an influx of Hispanics who don't embrace American values. http://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/Walter-Rodgers/2010/0330/Illegal-Hispanic-immigration-is-undermining-American-values By Walter Rodgers March 30, 2010 Santa Barbara, Calif. Walking the sandy beachfront in this ultra-affluent city, I chanced upon two Hispanic men rummaging through the trash. Startled at the sight, I stared momentarily. One of them yelled at me, “You look now, but in 50 years we will own all this!” Given the tsunami of illegal immigration and the prolific Hispanic birthrate, I responded, “I believe you will.” US Census statistics suggest the scavenging man was right. California, now about 37 percent Latino, is expected to be majority Hispanic by 2042. A quarter of all Americans will probably be Latino in 40 years. This trend has worrisome aspects. Imagine a huge, growing Hispanic underclass in America with a grudge, a burning sense of having been victimized by the “gringos.” I witnessed this grudge up close a few years ago at Texas A&M International University in Laredo. Hispanic students challenged me, claiming any restriction of illegal immigration across the US southern border with Mexico is a violation of Latinos’ human rights. Me: “Would you try to reenter Spain without a passport? Students: “Of course not.” Me: “What about France, or Britain?” Students: “No.” Yet many of these illegal Latino immigrants suffer the illusion they are divinely entitled to colonize the US – and not just the states bordering Mexico, but Chicago and the East Coast as well. Some Hispanics talk openly of a reconquista, an effort to reclaim the American Southwest that once belonged to Mexico. Historically, this concept is wide of the mark. Most Hispanic ancestors of immigrants owned no land. Their forebears were serfs of the Roman Catholic Church, once the largest landholder in Latin America and the world. Other ancestors labored as landless peons for Spanish colonial landlords who were later relieved of their lands by 19th-century Anglo-Americans. Historical entitlement is but one of the myths surrounding illegal Hispanic immigration. Gringos have their own fables, such as ultimate assimilation into a greater English-speaking society. Professor Lawrence Harrison of Tufts University in Medford, Mass., notes that “In California, fourth- and fifth-generation Mexican immigrants are still speaking only Spanish and resisting assimilation.” He says there are serious cultural barriers to the old melting-pot concept. “Words like compromise and dissent, crucial concepts to American democracy, have radically different meanings in Spanish.” Dissent, for example, translates into “heresy.” Most alarming, today’s influx of poor Latin American immigrants comes from countries less than congenial to democracy, a law-based society, or public education. Many experts look with alarm on the fact that, unlike earlier European and Asian immigrants, the tsunami from the south too often undervalues educating children because many Hispanic parents resent the idea that their children will have more education than they have. In 2000, only 25 percent of working-age male Mexican immigrants had graduated high school, a sad fact that contributes to an increasingly volatile underclass. Limited legal Latino immigration greatly enriches the United States. I’ve personally seen how Hispanic Americans bring tremendous loyalty and leadership qualities to our armed forces But it is morally shameful to expect taxpayers to fund free education and medical care for lawbreakers so that the wealthiest Americans – restaurant owners, ranchers, agribusiness owners, and construction companies – can hire cheap labor regardless of the national consequences. It is ever the wealthy sticking it to the poor. With so many Americans losing their homes and unable to find jobs, it is outrageous to say Hispanics still take jobs no one else will do. Congress, which generally represents the wealthy, should begin by imposing huge fines on affluent Americans who hire illegals. Start with the millionaires in my neighborhood, who don’t mow their own lawns or baby-sit their children and instead hire immigrants who are almost certainly illegal. Businessmen are bonkers if they think opening US borders to allow the free flow of uneducated labor will make America competitive with a burgeoning Chinese economy. Naive American liberals need to stop trilling over Emma Lazarus’s “Give me your tired, your poor,/ Your huddled masses….” World population was 1.5 billion when she penned those lines. It now approaches 7 billion. America is not a dumping ground for the rest of the world’s surplus population. Committing national suicide is not without precedent. The Dutch are rapidly losing their country. Before long, its largest cities will belong to Muslim immigrants. What then becomes of the liberal tradition of Erasmus and traditional Dutch tolerance? Illegal immigration may ultimately be more threatening to the character and values of the US than any threat from radical Islamists. It’s not about tribe; it’s about the law. Walter Rodgers, a former senior international correspondent for CNN, writes a biweekly column. Scott: Do I understand your argument correctly that persons from Guatemala who enter the U.S. illegally are, in fact, NOT illegal because they possess Central American Maya-Quiche blood? Ok....  more

I'm hoping to do something medical (not sure exactly what yet; nurse, doctor, idk) so I'm going into the biological sciences. I got into the Neurobiology, Physiology & Behavior major at UC Davis, and the pre-biology major at UC santa barbara. I hear that Davis tends to have have good pre-med and sciences, but haven't heard much about Santa Barbara, though I know they are a good school as well. I know the lifestyles, cities, etc of both schools. I want advice on a purely educational level. I have sort of a mental pros and cons list for each school but I need to know more about their educational stuff to make an informed decision.  more

Voting Question: College....SBCC or stay on the east coast?

I live in CT and was accepted into simmons, suffolk, endicott...all on the east coast. all these schools are fine, but i was thinking about going to the west coast...santa barbara city college. its a community college, so i would go there for 2 yrs and i was thinking i could always transfer back to the east coast if i wanted to. if i liked it, i would go to ucsb. one of my friends lives in santa barbara, so i would get an apt with her. this is a pretty big decision, and i have to make it myself...but i'd appreciate your input!!! thanks everyone!  more

Resolved Question: Attend CSULA or UCSB?

CSULA now or 2 Years @ Santa Barbara City College & transfer to UC? I plan on med school after either route. The pros & cons of these schools are pretty blatant such as prestige, price, social life, etc, but what do you think?  more

Resolved Question: Choosing between UC's and CSU's....?

Okay, so I'm planning to transfer from a Junior College to either a University of California or California State University college. The deadline to accept admission for the CSU's is May 1st, while it's June 1st for the UC's; a small problem is that the admission decisions for UC Berkeley and UC Davis won't be posted online until the night of April 30th, exactly before the CSU deadline. So, I'm trying to sort of make a ranking of the schools in order of preference so that I can make a decision by May 1st, and wanted to get some opinions out there to help me. The schools I applied to were: UC Berkeley UC Davis UC Santa Barbara UC Santa Cruz Humboldt State - already got accepted to San Francisco State - already got accepted to San Diego State - last choice (safety school, plus I'd have free rent if I went there) So, please rank these schools, taking into account tuition price, living cost, prestige of school, remote vs. city (fiance is a naval reservist and has to report to his muster in the Bay area once a month = transportation cost), etc. I'm a 4.0 GPA French major, planning to become a teacher, and possibly will either double major or minor in something along the lines of Ethnic Studies. I'm also engaged and the cost of attendance and living is a relatively large factor, but it could be overlooked depending on the school (UC Berkeley, for example, would be worth the cost to go to).  more

Resolved Question: My chances at these schools? USC, UCLA, UCB, NYU, Columbia. Not your typical Asian.?

Ethnicity/Gender: Asian Male (most generic combo in southern california) Aiming For: * - USC (legacy through my sister who is a current freshman) * - UCLA (legacy through my mom, class of 87) - UC Irvine / UC San Diego * - UC Berkeley? (maybe) * - NYU Reach Schools: * - Columbia - Northwestern - Cornell - Boston College - Brown Fallbacks: - UC Riverside / UC Santa Barbara * - Pepperdine University - Boston University * top choices I'm currently a junior in the tech program at an extremely competitive IB/Tech School. it's a magnet school, as we were required to test in during the summer of freshman year. I live 2 cities away from the school, which requires me to make a 40 mile round trip (everyday!) just to get to school. That should show how much dedication it takes to go to this school, as well as to show the high standard of education that the school provides. It's a public school, but pretty much everyone understands that the curriculum and emphasis on academics is on par with prestigious private schools. For example, in Honors Biology freshman year (9th grade), we used their "honors" level bio book which was actually meant for actual college courses. Why I'm telling you this is because attending this school has drastically dragged my GPA down. What I'm wondering is how much of a factor GPA plays into my acceptance into college and whether or not colleges will factor in the difficulty of the school I attend. Academic GPA (9-12): 3.2500(W)/2.8125 Academic (10-12) GPA: 3.0526(W)/2.7368 Total GPA (9-12): 3.3056(W)/2.9167 Freshman - 4 Honors; Sophomore - 2 Honors, 1 AP; Junior - 1 AP I still have this last semester of junior year to bring my GPA up more. PSAT: 219 - qualified for NMSQT SAT I: CR - 800, M - 750, W - 750: total 2300 SAT II: taking US History, Math, and English this summer Completed AP's: AP Euro - 4, Physics B - 3 Currently taking: APUSH, AP Psych, Lang & Lit, and a few more Next Year AP’s: AP Stats, AP Environmental Science I'm fairly confident about the SAT 2's and AP's i'm taking this year. Senior Workload: AP Stats, AP Environmental Science, Econ/Gov, World Lit/Brit Lit (Tech), Spanish 3. Also probably taking Screenwriting & Lit as well as Bible as Lit. As you can see I’m literally tripling my literature classes senior year. Hopefully this makes a difference(?) as I’m applying to colleges where humanities are emphasized; also I’m an Asian-American, not the typical path for a Chinese dude. Extra-Curriculars: OC Acadec: Placed 2nd Overall in the Varsity Division in the 2010 OC Academic Decathlon, team placed 1st in div 2, 5th overall (including division 1). It was our first year too. Sorry this was so long, but if you guys could chance me for each school (especially the ones with asterisks) I would greatly appreciate it. Resolved Question: Could you have a look at this and correct it? Please tell me if it's too bad!?

Sport and Free Time Caltanissetta is the venue of Coppa Nissena di automobilismo, an historical uphill time trial race from Capodarso Bridge to Santa Barbara Village. In 2009 Caltanissetta held its 55th edition and as this race is valid for the Italian Championship of Mountain Racing many pilots from all around Italy gather in Caltanissetta. For two years the Coppa Nissena has been held in springtime. Other appointments for motor fans are “Slalom del Borgo” (now at its 7th edition, valid for the Italian specialty Championship) that is held between June and July, as well as the “Rally Città di Caltanissetta” (which is a national rally competition at its7th edition too) which is held in November. Under the recently elected mayor of the city Michele Campisi (elected in June 2009) it was restored the Settembre Nisseno (September of Caltanissetta). In this month there are some musical and entertainment shows that end on 29th September with the Patron Saint feast, San Michele Archangel.  more

Resolved Question: Who could correct this text? It's in English...10 points!?

Caltanissetta is located at 568 mt above sea level on a high that culminates in the North of Mount San Giuliano which dominates the valley of Salso river from the right side. The municipal territory reaches 415.94 km2 and there are 61,319 inhabitants called “nisseni”. Routes “outside the city walls” Driving through Ss 122, getting beyond the borders of the territory of Enna, one comes up to the Ponte of Capodarso, a structure built by the Spanish about 500 years ago, under the Emperor Carlo V, when Sicily belonged to the huge Spanish Empire. It is a high engineer bridge structure if one considers that it was built in our hinterland five hundred years ago. This bridge crosses the natural reserve of Himera, a gourgeous tuff gorge hollowed by the homonymous river. Keeping going up one can see a breathtaking landscape made up of houses in ruin guarding olive trees and age-old almond trees. Then one passes under the mount Sabucina, a marvelous rock that at dawn turns red and where people mine the popular “blocchi di Sabucina”. This rock has been used to build almost all the buildings of Western Sicily and recently has been used to rebuild the Cattedrale di Noto. Not far away is an archaeological site proving the area was already inhabited in VIII b.C. Going on toward Caltanissetta are some old sulfur mines, industrial archaeology that reminds of a past in which Caltanissetta was the world capital of sulfur digging. Opposite to Santa Barbara village, in front of the house that had been built to host people who worked in the mines of sulfur in the surrounding fields is the wide area of Terrapelata and its “Maccalube”. This is a place unique of its kind with active small mud volcanoes, a very rare phenomenon which is still under evolution. These volcanoes can be found in three places in Italy : Caltanissetta, Aragona (close to Agrigento) and Emilia Romagna. Continuing the journey is the old building of Amaro Averna, source of pride to Caltanissetta and example of industrial archeology still in use! A little bit beyond there are the Archeological Museum of Caltanissetta and the well-known Abbey of Santo Spirito, a unique Arabic-Norman Church housing handiworks of Roman, Arabic, Norman and Spanish Age. This small Sabucina-rock casket keeps almost two thousand years of history. What to see in the city: Caltanissetta offers several treasures in its historical center, among them is the Cathedral of Santa Maria La Nova that overlooks piazza Garibaldi. Besides several art works, it houses the XVII century frescos by the Flemish painter Guglielmo Borremans. Turning into Corso Umberto, one runs into the Church of Sant’Agata al Collegio, an age-long center of the Jesuits Order. The church has a Greek-cross plant and houses excellent mosaics made of hard stones depicting tropical birds. The building of the ex Jesuits convent is connected to the church and is now used as a public library. The shrine at Redentore rises on the city on top of San Giuliano hill and on the 29th December it will be 110 years old. The pedestal was designed by the architect Ernesto Basile from Palermo. The statue is 4.85 m but the total height including the pedestal reaches 13.15 m. At the end of the XIX century, the raise of 19 monuments of Jesus the Redeemer was expected, but only five of them reached conclusion, among which was that of Caltanissetta. The center of the city hosts the popular local market called “’a strata foglia”, a place full of colors, perfumes and traditions. More churches and historical buildings are set like precious stones in the fabric of the city: a walk in the center is the best way to discover them! Even for the cannolo there are some historical confirmations of its origins from Caltanissetta. Recent researches (and legends) confirm that this delicious dessert was born in Caltanissetta, the ancient “Kalat Nissa” (in Arabic “Women Castle”). Some women who lived in the Castello of Pietrarossa might have “invented” it during the Arabic dominion (827-1091); Another hypothesis tends to believe the cannolo was “born” in a nunnery close to Caltanissetta in Carnival. Voting Question: What Grade Average Do You Need To Qualify For USC?

I am in 3rd JR. High (I live in mexico and there's 3 JR. high years and 3 High School years), entering 4th High School. I am going to enter a program called "C.C.H." which includes "B.I." ("Bachillerato Internacional" which which me go to study University in any other country, including USA) I usually like to plan my future, you know, leave no surprises ahead of me, I lived in California for 6 years (which explains why I speak english and have an american accent) and made a load of friends, which willl be going to USC, and I also wish to learn science in USC, thus I wish to enter USC for University. But I was wondering; exactly what grade average do I need to be eligible to enter USC? Thank You Now, before some of you racists out there begin I wish to let you know, the 6 years I lived in Cali. where as a diplomat, my father was the consulate of mexico in a city called Oxnard south of Santa Barbara and north of Los Angeles, and I do wish you to know that I PRERFER USA to Mexico, by a long shot. BTW in mexico we use a grading system from 0-10, 0-5 is failed and 6-10 is passed (obviously 10 is best and 0 worst) I do comprehend the A B C D F grading system but please try to simplify as much as possible, i am only 14 ATM, still got 3 years until college although i do rather perfer to plan from right now so that at the last minute i wont be looking for a good college, thanks  more

I’m wondering how much is it to rent the diamond twin star or the diamond DA 40? When people say a $90 per hour to rent a plane, is that mean an hour of technical flying? I will get my private license hopefully in three months as I’m training right now. I live in Salt Lake City, and I’m planning to travel to Santa Barbara for a couple of days in June. Also, how much would be the cost like to park the plane in Santa Barbara’s airport?  more
