A cash award of $10,000,000 (Ten Million dollars) The jobs have to be for citizens of USA, performing at least 90% of the job duties in USA, while speaking English, and using skills learned by experience, in High School, or in College. Each employed person must marginally contribute net profit to the firm that hires him/her. Within this framework the jobs can be any legal activity. I know this is loaded question, but I really need more income and I haven't been able to figure out on how to grow my income. Even in a recession going on right now, there must be ways to increase my income right now or at least getting a better job. 1. I got a low paying full time job, but also attend college full time. > The current job is perfect as for time of work (shift), which is overnights so I can have time to go to school during the day or have appointments. Also it's security and a lot of downtime going on, so I can study during work time. 2. I can't find a replacement job without risking on more stress/energy during work, which can effect my grades. My goal is to be a A/B (GPA 3.5+) student to get scholarships. It's scholarships vs. more income situation. The more time and energy I put into my school the more likely I can receive scholarships, but if I put more time into another job (or 2nd job) the more right now income I can get. This is extremely difficult problem I've been having for a long time... I am working very hard to keep my grades great, but I need more income. My ultimate goal is to make six or more figures a year, and become Financially Independent. I know it sounds crazy since I'm only 13, but it is my dream. My first idea is a website where free users can submit original songs and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat with other users. I would also have an area where users can post info and another area where bands can find new band members. To make money from the site, I would sell ad space, sell an ecourse on songwriting, and maybe creating a pro membership if the site becomes big enough. I have a problem though. OK so I am 18 years old(too old for this type of venting) and a sophomore in college. Let me give you a background. I am the oldest of 6 children in a homeschooled family. As you can imagine,while parents may view such a life as profitable, in highschool I hated it. I argued and constantly fought with my parents and whenever I tried venting with my siblings they just told my parents. Becuase my parents were and are very protoective, and most times forceful and severely stern, even though I am very right brained, they did everything in their power to smother what little artistic ability I have and drowned my education with rigourus science material. This also made me very angry as I was able to sew at 10 and enjoyed teaching piano. Although I realize that there were/ are good reasons for this, I couldnt stand failing the PsAT and SAT because I only Got 90% in the writing, and wasbelow average for math and critical thinking and spent most of my time arguing with my parents about why I wanted to be a seamstress and or musician. Of course I am not a MJ or a Vera Wang, but I knew that while I may find science interesting, I lacked the skills. Finally college came. while applying for colleges, I decided after volunteering as a pharmicist, that going into the sciences could give me what I wanted. My dad somehow convinced me that I could/can become this highly talented person that can dominate the sciences by somehow developing my science skills and using the arts as icing. Most of all the bait for me was the money . For a while, this seemed to work I applied to DC's finest schools and got into one of them as a biochem major and placed into calculus and spanish 3. Once I became a freshman I got something else I wanted above everything, freedom. You can imagone that as a homeschooled kid being away from home and parents, listening to music i wanted, gaining popularity and the like were like winning a million. However as always innocence and ignorance yield pain. I discovered after failing most of my science courses that college was no party. However instead of taking steps to improve in the sciences I became angry and insecure and decided that I just dont want to be a science major. I know this is stupid but all year I have tried to convince them to leave me alone and let me some how get to hollywood. FAIL (duh). I am beside myself. My many friends have tried to help me and make me feel encouraged, my parents naturally dont want me to quit and wont pay tuition if I changr my mind. I am so frustrated , I burn midnight oil trying to make D's and C's. During thissummer break, and all semester long I am either fussing with my parents or considering suicide. Every time they mention god and me in the same sentence I wish cursing was not against the rules. To make things worse my other siblings are what my parents want them to be. My brother has 99% on PSAT and my other siblings are the same. I am beside myself guys and I am crusing toward my end. I have even considered quitting college altogether. I've chosen Biology, Chemistry, Psychology and English Lit for my AS and A Levels. I'm a 19-year-old, US midwest-located girl in college. My tentative life plan is a career of some sort in botany. I'm fascinated by plants- especially algae- so I'm not feeling too picky about where my feet land. However, I would do my best to avoid an occupation that was completely or almost completely labwork-based (including micro photography, which sounds interesting to a point but not fulfilling enough or as closely linked to the natural world as I'd like), or had to do with genetically modifying plants "for bad" (pesticide-resilient soybeans, for example). So my question is (and I fear that my previously-mentioned professions will be bounced right back at me), what are the botany-related jobs that are 1) most needing to be filled and/or 2) most profitable/secure? Just curious to see what my prospects might be after thousands of years spent on my education. Also to make this question even more lengthy and complicated, what are some major career options in meteorology, geology, marine biology and bacteriology (other paths I would be interested in taking)? Ever since 8th grade (I'm in 10th now), I have dreamed of becoming an animator at Pixar, Blue Sky, or some major animation company. I have always loved drawing, since age 2, and I quite honestly can't think of anything I love to do more than do artistic things. This is how great my passion for the arts and animated movies is. At the same time, (unfortunately for me) I'm also a very academic person. Just for the intents of this question, I usually get A's, and I'm sure if I intended to, I could be a lawyer or teacher or some other profitable occupation. However, none of these jobs interests me at this point and my only current passion is art and animation. My parents seem to be very much against this, though, because research shows that animators do not get a high salary (it always boils down to money, doesn't it?). My mom suggests that I not go to a fine arts school, such as Cal Arts, which I hear is one of the places to go to get into an animation career. Instead, she suggests that I go to a regular state college and take some art classes on the side. Also, please take this with a grain of salt, but she told me today, speaking about art, "When you're 35 or so, you'll think 'Wow, I'm glad I have art as a hobby, but it was worth it to have a job as a...' and whatever job you'll be." She also said that, if after 4 years I was still interested in animation, we would look into a possible further education. This personally leaves me heartbroken because my mom was very open and supportive to the idea when I first told her about it a few years ago, when she told me she would always support what job I chose to do, and would never force me into anything. Now, she's following the same steps that my step-dad's mother followed when she forced him to become a doctor instead of his dreams of viola playing, which I understand he did much of in high school. I'm a junior in high school and have been thinking over my options for college and the major I wish to pursue. I just wanted some feedback on some different options and possibly those who have similar majors. Currently my main majors I'm deciding between are either Mechanical Engineering or a double major in Psychology and Philosophy. I like engineering because of the technology and designing. It's fun and also is very profitable. The other two on the other hand appeal to me because I would get to study human nature and thought processes. So...I am a junior and I really am lost for where I should be headed with what will be my career. For the past 3 years, I have been thinking about becoming a doctor. I have good grades in science and I am taking AP Chemistry this year-which isn't my best grade but I'm doing okay. Considering the caliber of my school, too, I know I could get into a Pre-med program. (I am not saying that to sound cocky, but it is true). But doctors have a lot of school expenses, a high-stress life, and not a lot of time to enjoy life. I could do it...and I really like the idea of being that knowledgeable, professional, and helping people. But I'm not the strongest person emotionally and doctor's deal with a lot of death...My philosophy on doing medicine is: [a] it is a reliable career [b] I would help people [c] it is hard, and overcoming a lot of difficult study would make me really proud of myself On the other hand, I have been drawing buildings in my sketch book since I was quite young. I love buildings a lot. But architecture is not as...profitable as medicine. My dad is an engineer, and knows many architects. They do okay...most are men. Their caliber of education is also high. They are well respected, but they don't really help people. I salvaged a major account by negotiating a compromise with an irate salesperson and the client. I began doing accounting and found systematic cheating by a large client. The financial materials I prepared to address this resulted in prompt payment of $200,000+. I then took over a failing division of the company and within 7 months the division was profitable. It was sold to someone with an MBA and extensive industry experience and within 6 months the company was bankrupt. The parent company was part of the dot com crash of 2000 and I was again looking for work. 2.Accounting (interim position for an insurance company). Spent a year there before, an urgent personal matter forced me to move on short notice (family related). First off, I'm not sure about the life you guys live, but I will tell you, in a nutshell, about the things I have come across so far. It seems as though we're all running around racing to live an "ideal life". Let me elaborate. Right now, I'm a high school student, and I feel my life is not really going anywhere. Everywhere I come across pressure to do well in school and get into a good college. My GPA for the honors curriculum is around 3.84, so I'm not whining because I'm stupid. I just don't find school that useful, or at least the majority of what we learn is crap. This is a good example of the 80/20 rule, 20 percent of what I learn will actually be utilized in the "real world", while the rest is just a waste of my time. Back to the topic, everyone around me is pressuring me to get a good SAT score and get into an Ivy League school. I see everyone rushing to get good grades and have an adequate amount of extracurriculars so they will be accepted to a good college. My guidance counselor, parents, relatives, teachers, and society all feel that I should become the epitome of a prospective college student, so they'll always want to push me so I can go to a good college. My family adds even more pressure to this. My dad has even laid out what school I'm going to go to, what I'm going to major in, and what my job will be. I just hate it! It just gets annoying when my dad tells everyone where I'm going to school for my undergrad and master's. He also tells me that after college, I'm supposed to go work for some corporation before I decide to open my own investment/hedge fund, and somehow become a billionaire while doing all of this. When I tell my dad I want to become an entrepreneur, he tells me to become a stock broker. Even though I know he has the best interests in mind, I do not want to follow this road. For example, I'm not a very good trader. I've lost around 11,000 dollars over the course of a few months in this economic downturn. It would really suck if I have to go and possibly lose other people's money. Don't get me wrong, I have found what is best for me. I am an excellent investor, in fact most of my stock picks could have been profitable if I had kept them for a couple more months, but I'm a horrible trader. That's where I lost most of my money. Anyways, over the course of these months, I have found sitting and looking at a computer is quite tedious and boring. Probably the thing that irritates me the most is that my dad has already engraved in his mind of what I'm supposed to do. Furthermore, my parents have already put a damper on my personal life. Until now, that was the only argument that can be plausible). When I decided to ask why I have to do what society expects of me, my family tells me that I have to do as I'm told. Some of my family members told me that having a girlfriend is "nasty" and they keep asking me about what other indians will think of me if they find out that I had a girlfriend. They all act like it's the end of the world if I decide to march to the beat of my own drummer. I'm a teenager, and I just want to have fun, but my family thinks that living a teenager lifestyle (dating and relationships) is almost satanic. They feel as though I'm going to embarrass the family if I start dating (The Indian culture puts emphasis on society rather than the individual, so you have to do what society want you to do, and not what you want to do) On another note, when I told my dad I won't be ready to settle down until I'm around 35, he said you have to settle down quickly so you can have children. I'm mean, seriously, I'm only 15 and he already telling stuff I don't want or need to hear. To put everything shortly, my family wants me to go to a good college, get a good job, get married, have children, take care of my parents, retire, and die. To me this is really sad, as I'm already feeling that I'm part of the rat race we're all supposed to run in. I currently have a 3.6 GPA at the end of my junior year. I attend an extremely rigorous high school in Illinois. In sophomore year, I had one AP class, in junior year I had two AP classes, and in senior year I am scheduled to have 4 AP classes. I plan on taking every possible AP Test I can. I am an Eagle Scout and I am also involved in heavy community service (at the library, food pantries, homeless shelters, church, and nursing home). I have, however, been diagnosed with an acute form of ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). Even though my parents knew about it since I started junior high, they were afraid to put me on the medication because of the potential side effects it might have had. During my first 3.75 years of high school, I was constantly pulling all nighters just to finish my work. They finally started me on the medication in early 4th quarter and I proceeded to get a 4.0 GPA that quarter, as opposed to a 3.3 GPA my first five and a half semesters of high school. I also am way more focused and finish my work at 9 at the earliest and 10 at the latest. If I continue to get a 3.8-4.0 GPA throughout senior year, will that look good to Stanford? Other handicaps I have had to battle thru have been moderate hearing impairment (for which I wear hearing aids) and a horrible stuttering problem. A few years ago, when I was 20, I dropped out of college, formed my own business and got heavily involved with a woman I was deeply in love with. Long story short, things were great. What I was doing was profitable, I had no one to answer to and felt respected and loved by my girlfriend, friends and family. Fast forward. I lost big on a shipment from my largest supplier, big time, crippling my cash flow and pushing me into insurmountable debt. I quit lifting weights, started drinking heavily and gambling, knowing that no matter my efforts I was headed for economic catastrophe. I don't say this as an exaggeration. Unless I could get a job paying $5,000 monthly with no prior work experience longer than six months and a failed business behind me, I was ruined. Then my girlfriend end up leaving me. I had quit lifting as the result of working constantly and no longer had any money as the result of a truckload of merchandise which I had bought that turned out to cost me 10x more than I paid for it just to scrap it. She hated the drinking and the gambling. I found myself in an ever worsening state of drinking gallons of vodka a day and gambling away what little money I did and didn't have as my only escapes from the life I couldn't deal with. I lost everything I had, my car, my woman, my prior physical fitness and my self esteem. I was forced to file bankruptcy. It took me almost a year to raise the $1,000 to do so. I sought medical and psychological treatment. It helped. I no longer want to die and can function somewhat. I slowly started my business back up, making a few hundred dollars a month and eventually found a cheap car. The problem is this. I feel utterly hopeless. I've gotten my drinking under control and completely quit gambling. I lost some of the weight I put on over the past few years. But. I don't have any friends anymore. I haven't been able to get a date for two years and after a one night stand a few months ago, I've decided to quit trying. My family does nothing but consider me a failure. My friends are gone. I alienated what few of them were because of the woman I thought I would be with for a very long time, who mattered more to me than life itself. I feel like shit constantly despite the medication. I tried getting back into the gym. I have lost the drive I once had. My days are filled with nothingness. No one will hire me. I don't mean McDonald's. I can't work in customer service, the only occupation available me in this area because I can't deal with the general public. My psychiatrist calls it social phobia. And that's despite the medication and therapy. I've never held a job for more than a year. I've been fired from several service related jobs because I couldn't take shit from people talking down to me all the time. I had a wonderful job as a private investigator which I loved but was forced to retire from because of a permanent relocation. I also was a top salesman at a bank. But none of that seems to matter now. Because of my bankruptcy, work history and lack of degree, I am unemployable in almost any field. I've submitted over 200 resumes, applications and letters of interest, not including phone calls and internet applications, over the past three months. No one wants to hire me now. I live in the second poorest county in the state I live in. I can't get back to school until the fall. I'm stuck every day sitting at home focusing on my misery and lack of resources. I can't move to a more affluent area because I have no savings or credit. I can go back to school in the fall. I plan on it. I'm a finance major. I have about 60 credits until I get my degree. I wonder how many firms want to hire finance or economics people or even managers in the finance or even corporate management field who have filed bankruptcy and have no significant work experience. I'm willing to guess not many. So I feel I'm stuck. Maybe this feeling will subside when I get back to school in the fall. I can't afford to even go to community college in the summer, which I would love to. I had a 3.91 GPA in a tough curriculum and a profitable business. I just can't seem to bounce back. I've always been a loner, but its never been this bad. I have a horrible self image, but can't muster the will to get into the gym. I lost 80 pounds when I was 16 and put on 20 of muscle in about six months. I've always been driven in whatever I've done. I've lost that now. I have no real friends. Due to recent developments in college, I've been considering changing major and school to get an Equine Science degree. Here's the backstory: I am a 2nd year pre-pharmacy student, supposed to be applying to pharmacy school this month. However, I recently have started to view this career merely as a job I can stand that will make me a boatload of money so that I can have horses instead of a career I love. Moreover, my grades have slipped badly (reasons are my own, and consist mainly of lack of motivation for organic chem), and though I have very high admissions test scores, the Pharm. dean told me pretty clearly in a recent advising session that if I didn't get particular grades on my finals, I wouldn't be getting in this year. I'm pretty sure I didn't bring my grades up enough, and my parents can't afford to send me out of state any longer to try again next year. I would pay my own way next year to try again, except that we fear with the economy the way it is, I will be unable to get a loan to pay my tuition. So I was considering transferring to William Woods and majoring in Equine Science. I am fairly certain (although awaiting a reply from their offices to confirm) that I could complete the degree in 4 semesters. I also stand to get quite a bit of scholarship if my GPA doesn't slip below a 3.5 after this semester. I asked about William Woods previously, but my only answer was really that I should stay in Pharm school. But this isn't really an option at this point. If I changed schools, however, I really would like to be a riding instructor, and give hunter/jumper lessons, and own a barn/school horses of my own, and perhaps do a couple of boarders a month. My question is, would I even have a shot at making this a stable career? My boyfriend is quite willing to support me, and already owns the land and is in the process of planning a barn that would support this career choice for me. He has a very stable job and makes a good deal of money, but I do NOT want to just suck off him and use his money to make it work. If I have to get a side-job, then so be it, but would that even be plausible? The other thing I am worried about is my amount of experience. I have been riding for 11 years, but not under the best of trainers, and my show experience is VERY limited. I hoped by actually doing the Equine Science degree at William Woods it would give me a chance not only to get some better training (and re-training) but also a chance to show through their various organizations. But would that be enough? I really wish my level of experience matched my passion for horses. Or, what would other stable career choices be? I understand in this economy buying then training and re-selling horses won't be profitable. I have thought perhaps about being a County Saddlery rep (there isn't one for my state) or working with local show and breed organizations, or even opening a tack store. I am also not particuarly interested in the breeding aspect of the horse industry. What other paths might I take with an Equine Science degree? I'm a freshman and am majoring in international business only because i'm good at languages and have studied abroad/do well abroad... the thing is that I don't want to spend my entire life traveling the world because I want to get married, settle down, and start a family. I know that conservative Americans believe that what's good for big business is good for America b/c businesses hire Americans and make better products, which provide more tax revenue and less unemployment. Here's what I don't get: When corporations get big enough, they often have back room deals with politicians where in which the dems and repubs. get money in order to have legislation passed in the favor of big business. In return, big business will finance campaigns and summer ranches. Legislation that big business lobbies to pass and have politicians support are things like: A. Giving tax breaks to stores like Walmart, which then allows Walmart to artificially lower their prices below the actual cost of the local AMERICAN competing stores, thus putting them out of business. That's not capitalism at all, it's just a tax break from the local, state and national gov't. B. Market Harmful products to kids. Feds can't replace parents, but isn't it a bit much for corps like Phillip Morris to target kids just to make money? C. Create exuberantly high interest rates. Not only will Mastercard charge very profitable interest rates, but they will even place most of there kiosks on college campuses. D. Do away with Pensions and tell employees to play the stock market for their retirement. E. Create addictive pain killing drugs and then pay reps to persuade (bribe) doctors to push the drugs on everyone, much like a crack dealer. F. Receive huge bailouts from the feds b/c they've been allowed to grow so large that a disproportionately huge amount of wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few guys. Before the new deal, Unions came into existence to stop employers from implementing 12 hour working days. But the New Deal expanded the power of the Federal Gov't. Ever since then big business has worked very hard to reduce this power. They have highly paid lobbyists, lawyers and media entities such as major networks and radio talk shows to get the masses to believe that supporting gov't regulation is the same thing as supporting communism. Alright, i'm going to be frank. I am a highschool senior who is searching for a career in the arts and i came across the notion that i could design costumes for movies. After a long hiatus from college, I'm going back at the age of 29.5. I will be attending Georgia State University in spring '09. I like business; I read the Wall Street Journal on a daily basis. And I converse with my dad (who has a bachelor's degree in accounting) often about financial issues from pollution to politics often. Though, my dad has also told me the horror stories of accountancy (arguably, the most versatile major in the business world at the moment), especially at one of the Big 4 firms. He worked for PriceWaterhouseCoopers, back in the late 60's, early 70's, for many years as one of the first blacks to in the New York office. When he left, he swore to never work for a firm again and still has not, almost 40 years later. People, I love. Sharing, working with them, individually and corporately. I found it to be mainstay of my life happiness. But virtually all degrees that concern people have little marketability in private and public sector and compensate even less, or I have to spend the rest of my 30's getting advance degrees to supplement it. Not an option. Ideally, I would like to combine my business acumen with my fondness for people that would reap a profitable and personally satistifying career in the business world.
