Voting Question: How To Mic A Drum For Recording?
I was thinking of getting some microphones made for drums and using XLR to 1/4" analog cables (like an instrument cable), and then plugging the analog part of the cables into a basic mixer. From there, I want to connect the mixer to an audio interface with a USB, and then the USB into my computer. My question is, I want to get this mixer (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Behringer-MICROMIX-MX400-4-Channel-Line-Mixer-896751-i1475442.gc), and the only purpose of getting this is so I can get all my mics connected into my audio interface (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Lexicon-Alpha-USB-Desktop-Recording-Studio-103840849-i1126259.gc). Soo...the input jacks on these two pieces of equipment...do they support microphones? The mixer just says "input", it doesnt specify. The microphone shocks me whether I use XLR male to female or XLR to 1/4 inch standard cable. (like a guitar cable) I get shocked, literally, when hooked up to the PA at my work, or my drummer's cube speakers for his electric drum set, but when the microphone is plugged into a guitar amplifier, I do not get shocked. So I attach a standard 1/4" cable to it. I plug it into amps, turn it on and it doesn't make a sound. Do I need to buy an XLR cable in order to harness phantom power (I have no clue what that is) or do I need a pre-amp? Will a pedal work? Okay, I have a mixer board that I bought a while back. It has an XLR input and under it, it has a LINE IN and an INSERT input. I want to plug my microphone that is 3.5 into a converter that uses 1/4 Plug into an input. I plugged my rig up into the INSERT and the LINE IN, there is no signal coming from it! Hi usually im a computer guy and would figure these things out but i'v spent the last two days trying to figure out fruity loops and i gotta say this is probably the most confusing program i have ever worked with. I want to use Fruity loops 9 to record vocals and guitar here is my setup first of all. i need to have m-audio fast track as BOTH my input AND my output because my input is the mic and my output is the headphones and they are both connected to the fast track. 1. my speakers are connected to my computer 2. my fast track audio interface is connected to the computer via usb 3. my microphone and headphone and guitar is connected to the fast track audio interface. microphone is a perception 120 and is connected to the fast track by xlr. First question i have is that by having the audio interface does that replace having a sound card or do i still have to get another sound card? Now heres the problem: I downloaded the m-audio drivers already but it seems to screw things up for me and i can't hear stuff out of my headphones anymore and it just played out of my speakers so my fast track seems to work correctly without the drivers so i deleted them. When i use fruity loops 9 i watched tons of tutorials and i went to audio settings and set asio4all as my input/output device and go into "show asio panel" and selected my m-audio fast track for the wdm thing but sometimes that options isn't even available and it says there error message "being used by another application" when clearly i have exited every other application except fruity loops. Then on top of that sometimes i have input from my mic but then no output so i can't hear anything, other times i have output and can hear my track and beats playing but then it wont' take input. Once i'v gotten it to use the m-audio as both input and output device but it buffered alot. The input/output thing keeps trippin out and sometimes aren't available as a selection and im just about to give up on this so this is last resort. I kept having to plug and unplug my m-audio closing and opening applications and adjusting settings in my sound in control panel a billion times and get wierd results everytime. nothing makes sense. I have an xlr shotgun mic and a low to high impedence xlr to 3.5 stereo mini plug cable. The xlr mic has it's own battery power. When I used this setup on my Sony hdr-fx1 cacorder it worked wonderfully. But now on my canon rebel t2i I get lots of white noise and very very very low volume from everything the mic should be picking up. It's almost un disernable fron the white noise. Does this mean that the cable I need needs to have a different sort of wiring? I have this microphone and I have the Canon HG-10 camcorder. I bought a stereo XLR to 3.5mm cable to plug into the 3.5mm jack of my camcorder. I can hear the microphone working really well but at the same time, a loud buzzing noise is picked up ruining the sound. How do I fix this problem? How do I connect these 2 together? I'v recently started recording music on my computer, and I bought amplitube 3 for my guitar tracks and that works fantastically, I normally use drum loops etc, but when it comes to my singing, I need to use a normal XLR microphone... I use garageband (because I can't afford decent software yet...). When I record all he parts in, they are at perfectly normal levels, and I mix accordingly. For some reason however, when I record my voice, the recording comes out extremely quietly... And the only way I can make it stand out is by running it through amplitube and turning the volume right up.. unfortunately, this adds far too much gain and I can't distinguish any lyrics... I was wandering if anyone had encountered these sors of problems before? And if so, how they solved them... p.s. I have an AER compact 60 and shure SM 58 along with my acoustic guitar (taylor 314ce). What's the better setup to get a good guitar and vocals sound? Is the difference significantly noticeable? Finally what setup is easier to use so that I can make videos and upload with less hassle? If I had the fast track audio interface I'd connect my XLR line out from the aer compact 60 directly to the XLR input from the fast track interface. If i go usb condenser mic of course all my sound will come from my aer compact 60 which will be captured via the USB mic. I want to record using the compact 60 because the warm hall reverb there is very high quality, so it'll give the sound that extra oomph (rather than depending on post production software for the touch of reverb i need. I play acoustic guitar and sing, and I've been recording songs for over a year now. My methods and equipment has changed over this time, and I am looking to upgrade for better sound quality. I tried asking this question before and i think i misused some terms, so now i'm going to be as clear as possible. there is a microphone with it's own power supply, 7 pin cable to connect the mic to the power supply, and the power supply has an XLR output where i would use an XLR cable to connect the power supply to the XLR input of a mixer. Now the problem is, I'm using other microphones that require the use of phantom power, which the mixer is supplying to its XLR inputs. no line level and/or unbalanced connections are being made here. a tube mic has it's own preamp unit that has like a 6 pin input from the mic, and XLR output to the microphone. i have other microphones that require phantom power and have no external preamps, so i use the mixer's phantom power. would this be hazardous to the external preamp of the tube mic? i thinking it wouldn't be since the ouput is balanced. . . maybe preamp wasn't the correct term, the mic has its own power supply, and the output from the power supply to a mixer would be an XLR. there's no line levels involved in the scenario i'm describing. would the mixer's phantom power cause harm to that microphone's power supply/the mic itself? moreResolved Question: What is the best microphone for the money?

Hi, I am using a behringer xm8500 microphone mounted on a mic stand, run through an XLR-to-USB preamp connected to my computer. How far should I stand from the mic? Also, do singers have to shout into the mic? I find that distances bigger than 6 inches from the mic produce low levels for me, to only about -0.25 dbs. Are there disadvantages to singing at 6 inches or closer? Are there advantages to 6"+ distances? I typically sing only as loud as I talk. I have a mixer that provides phantom power to all mic inputs, and I often use condenser mics with dynamic mics. I've read phantom power can be harmful to unbalanced mics and that it is almost "invisible" to balanced mics. So is it true phantom power won't harm balanced dynamic microphones? I have a shotgun microphone to hook to my camcorder (HV40). It uses an XLR cable. The HV40 has a stereo 1/8" input. I know that you typically see an XLR to 1/4" cable with a 1/4" MONO plug. Long ago I read somewhere it said that the braided shield (second ground) had to be grounded, else you would end up with interference. Does anyone know whether or not hooking an XLR to 1/4" MONO cable through a (mono 1/8" to stereo 1/8") adapter to the HV40 would allow interference?
