Resolved Question: Commuter Weekend Bike?

Usually I drive everywhere, but I really want to get a bike to use on weekends to run errands and for leisure riding so I can save on gas. I would mainly use this bike on the pavement, but there are a couple of dirt trails near me that I would like to try. They're very basic; no jumps or harsh terrain, just pretty flat dry sandy ground. I was looking at either the Schwinn World GS or the Schwinn World Avenue/Street or even the Kona Smoke. What do you think of these bikes? Are they good for my use and are they even good bikes? Or would you suggest something else? My budget is $500, but I can go to $600 or even $650 if I need to. So something in that range. Thanks for your help! I had a department store bike. I probably got 4 or so hours out of the thing before the derailleur broke. Thanks for the help guys!  more

Resolved Question: Is there a huge difference between 29" and 26" for urban riding?

I want to get a replacement Kona Smoke since my old one was stolen. Loved the bike, particularly the quick handling in the city. My old model had 26" slick tires and I've been told the new ones have 29" slicks (like 700c road tires). Can anyone give me an opinion if I'll notice a huge difference? Might need to look for another model if it alters the handling. Can't test ride yet as 2009 models haven't hit the showfloors and shops are already out of 2008s!  more

Resolved Question: I'm looking to buy a hybrid bike. I'm thinking about a Kona smoke or a Kona dew. Any suggestions?

Resolved Question: What's the best commuter bicycle under $500 that I could still take out on weekends for long rides (20 mi.+)?

I'm looking for a complete, multi-speed bicycle. Price has to include fenders, and this bike needs to be be able to take a bit of a beating at the bike racks and jumping off curbs, but still be comfortable and versatile enough to hit the pavement for a 20-25 mile ride on the weekend. At 27 my body's already getting more picky about the sports I play, and I want a bike that will introduce me to the sport of cycling, while also getting me back and forth from school. I've heard good things about the Kona 'Smoke.' Feel free to concur with that opinion or that of others listed below. Or just tell me what bike YOU think best fits the criteria. Thanks very much. In case you need to know , I'm a 6'2" male.  more
