OK so a few months ago me and my family went to Paris for vacation. We were looking through pictures and I saw something weird.. It looks just like a translucent dog. We were in the hotel lobby, and there were no TV's on or anything like that. And no dogs walking by.. There weren't any decorations or anything like that sitting around. There was absolutely nothing dog-like or something that could have reflected that. It only appears in that spot, there aren't any weird reflections in both mirrors or anything. I set down my camera by the TV. I came back not long after and took some pictures of something(can't remember what). When I later went through the pictures I found a really strange one right inbetween the pictures I took before and after I set my camera down. It's a weird blurry mash-up of something..It appears to be blue(like my bedroom walls, there are no other blue rooms in the house) on the wall, and in the bottom left corner, it looks like a hand.. The thing towards the middle is either my stuffed giraffe or my littlest petshop bobble-head giraffe.. And in the center-ish at the top lookes like a blur of part of my windows, and on the side looks like my closet with a couple of my old dance costumes (which are not in my closet anymore..) And the thing in the bottom left corner is.. well, I dunno. The weird thing about this is that nobody touched my camera, it was downstairs on the TV stand the whole time, and nobody ever moved it. It was just me and my best friend at home hanging out, and she was with me the whole time before I grabbed my camera again. The pic is just really weird.. There's nothing like that down in the room where it was and it wasn't a pic of the TV because it was off, and there isn't anything like that downstairs.. At first, they appeared in places that you might expect: dense city centers such as New York, where officials may seek a bed bug czar, and San Francisco, which is trying landlord-education programs to keep the pests away. But now, there are reports of bedbug infestations in homes and hotels from Ohio to Texas. The stories are downright creepy. Exterminator James Self, who owns Ameritex Pest Control in Beaumont, Texas, says he was called out to one bedbug-riddled site that was like a scene from a horror movie. "There were spots all over the walls, and I didn't know what that was," Self recalls. "I thought maybe it was some wallpaper decoration or something. But as I approached it, it was totally covered in bedbugs — more than I've ever seen. And that's the one where we had to rip up the carpet, throw away all the furniture. It was terrible." 'You Should Be Worried' This business of feeding on other people... I think we all know some people like that do that, don’t we now? ...Maybe bedbugs aren’t so awfully different than somebody we know. - Michael Raupp Infestations like that are popping up across the country at an alarming frequency. "You should be worried — very, very, very worried," says Michael Raupp, an entomologist at the University of Maryland who spoke with NPR's Audie Cornish about the bedbug resurgence. Raupp runs a website called "Bug of the Week," and this week's star is — you guessed it — the bedbug. "They're really not just for bedrooms anymore," he warns. "They really have become widespread almost in any kind of establishment where people live and sleep, throughout both small and large cities." Raupp says bedbugs go where the food is. And for these critters, the "food" is sleeping human beings. "The problem is, as people go about their daily act of going to an office or going to a movie theater, for that matter, the probability that they are going to bring bedbugs with them increases," he says. "As people move about," Raupp says, "they are unwittingly bringing bedbugs with them." There was a time in American history when bedbugs were just accepted as a part of life, he notes. "Prior to the First World War, prior to the DDT era and the time of our synthetic/organic pesticides, bedbugs were commonplace," Raupp says. "That old rhyme, 'Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite,' harkens to the colonial era in the U.S., when bedbugs were commonplace in taverns and inns." It seems they could achieve that same ubiquity in the U.S. once again. Borderless Bugs "We're now in the era where people travel everywhere," Raupp says. "They just don't go to major cities like London or Paris. We have people going to second world countries and third world countries where, frankly, bedbugs are commonplace. And these guys are real troopers — they're hitchhikers and stowaways." "Whenever we travel, there's always a possibility that we can bring bedbugs home with us," Raupp says. "And bedbugs don't discriminate. This is not a matter of poor sanitation or poor housekeeping or uncleanliness." So how do people know if they've got a bedbug infestation? Raupp says your skin can tell you. "One of the first symptoms that you'll see of a bedbug infestation is unusual bites," Raupp says. "And these bites aren't going to be on your ankles, where the mosquitoes usually bite you, or on your arms. These bites could be on your neck, they could be on your shoulders, they could be down on your legs somewhere. They could be anywhere on your body. "These are gonna be small, itchy red welts — unusual bites," he adds, noting that people should call in professionals if they see these warning signs. "This is not one that you're going to want to tackle yourself," Raupp says. In spite of the distress bedbugs bring, Raupp says he's still a fan. "I find all bugs mysterious, wonderful. These ones I tend to find a little bit despicable. But they're fascinating in their own regard. I am from UK, I came to Paris with my brother Johnny Barton. It was my first time in Paris, and I was so excited. So, we went to to dinner and the Moulin Rouge, but Johnny was tired all the time. We came back to the hotel and I went up to my room, and Johnny stayed in the bar for a drink. Next morning, I went to wake him up, but there was no room! He was in the room number 19. Now 19 is a number on the communal bathroom! I went to the hotel manager (she is the owner, too) Madame Hervé, and she said I arrived alone! Her brother Narcisse and the day porter, they all said the same - that I came alone! I went to the British consul and he said I needed a witness, then he could perhaps do something. I think he did not believe me, too. He asked me to bring in the maid who served us, but she was an accident in the hot air balloon. I went to the French police, they talked to Madame Hervé and believed her story! I do not know what to do. Everything in my life seems so much worse than other people. Genes have given me the most hideous features a girl could ask for, my parents are poor, my sister is so pretty and hates me, my friends don't really care about me, I'm not good at anything in particular, and just recently my parents have been such jerks to me! I've never been pretty or popular. I have a big fat nose, an ugly shape face, my eyes are tiny and buried, my hair color and shape is retarded and I'm shy and have no friends. I have three at school, but they only use me so they're not loners at school and never actually want to hang out with me outside of school. Like whenever I invite them over or ask if they want to go to the movies, they say they're busy and then I will find out they went with each other and just didn't want me to be there :(. My parents are the meanest people ever. I respect my mom for working so hard (10 hour days) but she is such a bitch to me. At the beginning of the summer, my aunt asked me if I wanted to go on a trip with her to Paris, France and of course i said yes! My mom was ok with it, but made sure we had a reasonable budget. My mom made me look up cheap hotels and flights which I loved doing, and I spent literally days emailing my mom and aunt all the cheap deals I had found. Then, a few weeks later, my mom told me I couldn't go because she didn't want to pay for it! I started crying, because I was so looking forward to it, planning and all that, and she just canceled it! My dad is a fat, lazy jerk who works five hour days (1-4, 6-8) and complains about how hard he works (he sells shit cars). He eats ice cream all day, looks at cars on the computer in his big fat chair and yells at me and my sister for misdemeanors no one else would care about. Recently, my mom said she wanted a nice new car like every other man gets their woman. She drives a 1992 honda civic, rusted, the ugliest color, and doesn't even start half the time. My dad said he'd get her a nice new one and ordered it and everything. Then, I come home and ask him when mom was getting her new car and he said they were going to wait! He has done this fifty billion times! He will NOT get rid of her car. I am a full time student with no job but every semester, i get lump sum of money from school. My fiance and his mum had a dispute that made both parties gravely upset at each other. Voting Question: Ideas and strategies for travel with - or without - razors?

Hi, I've found a cheap flight from Paris, France, to Rome, Italy. For reasons of mobility and not wanting to pay to check in bags, I want to just bring a backpack with me. The only problem is, I'll be in Rome for four days, and I need to shave during that time. Here are a few questions about razors and travel - if anyone can answer even one, I'd really appreciate it: 1. First off, are razors allowed in carry-on bags? I just want to make sure of this. I'm not talking about the individual blades, but like plastic throw-away razors for shaving legs, a man's face (my boyfriend has this same question/problem, since he'll be coming on the trip), etc. 2. I was thinking I could maybe send myself two disposible razors, addressed to my hotel in Rome. Do you think it would be possible or adviseable for me to do this? When life gives you lemons… make lemonade. That’s what my dad always tells me when I’m stuck in a crappy situation. But to be honest, I don’t think that advice will work this one out. It feels as if I’ve been given rotten lemons, with no juice left in them, and there is just no point in making lemonade anymore. Only hours ago, I was packing for my summer vacation to France. Yes, France! You know, that country in Europe with the fashion capital of the world, and some of the most beautiful architecture ever created? Well anyway, I was happily packing away, minding my own business, when my dad knocks on my door. I was surprised by this because, to be honest, my dad and I never talk. He’s always busy on his laptop in his office, or he’s at work. It’s always one or the other. “Come in.” I said, wondering what in the world was it that he wanted to tell me. As soon as I saw the expression on his face, I knew it couldn’t be good. My dad always has one look on his face - plain, and bored. But at that moment, it was devastated. I wondered what on earth could have happened for my father to have been so sad. Millions of thoughts ran through my mind as I thought of all the possibilities. Did the fancy hotel that we were staying at in Paris burn down? Did our flight get cancelled? Turns out it was neither of those. It was much, much worse. “We’re not going to France, Anna.” he said with the most stern look I had ever seen. “What? W-w-why?” I asked, sadness sweeping over me. “I got a call from my brother last night. This was not right. This was not what was supposed to happen. This was not the way my summer was going to turn out. No way, no how. “But dad! You promised we’d go to France. We’ve been planning to go for months now, and it is a birthday present after all. Ukraine isn’t even my homeland. I know nothing about the place, or the people! We can’t go for the entire summer, we just can’t.” I said stubbornly, trying to fight back. “Well then you can learn about the place and the people this summer. The decision is final, Anna. We’re going.” And with those words, my summer flipped around faster than you could say "France no more!". The airport was crowded when we got there. People were whizzing by carrying huge amounts of luggage and suitcases. I wondered where they were all going to spend their summer vacation. Definitely not Ukraine. Some people wore sunhats and flip flops, as if they were ready to jump on to the beach in some tropic place like Hawaii at the very second. I’ll admit, I was jealous of them. My plain capris and t-shirt definitely did not show any excitement towards where I’m going. My dad is holding a book straight up to his face, as if avoiding eye contact with me. His bony face looks tense and distraught. His short chestnut hair stands up straight and I know that if it grew out a little bit more it will be just as wavy as mine. To be honest, I love my hair. It’s very long and wavy with a golden tint in it from my mom. Another good thing about it is that it covers my chubby cheeks. I was “gifted” as my dad would say with permanent baby fat, just like my mom. My whole life everyone made fun of me because of it, but my dad says that they suit me. What a lie. I think that he said that because they remind him of my mom. She was a beautiful woman, and I will admit that chubby cheeks did suit her. The thing is, she died when I was only a few months old. It was in a car accident back in Ukraine. I think that’s why my dad decided to move to Canada in the first place - to forget the nightmare he lived through of my mom being gone. That’s also probably why we’ve never visited relatives back in our homeland. To be honest, my dad tries avoiding the country every chance he gets. But I guess this was just too much for him. As I board the plane, I have one last look at Canada. I imagined this day for a long time. Only when I imagined it, I was happy. And right now, I was absolutely miserable. Not only because I would be thousands of miles from my best friends for the entire summer, but because I would have to spend it with people I didn’t know at all. And to be honest, that included my dad. “Is my great grandmother’s house nice?” I ask once we sit down. “She doesn’t live in a house. In fact, everyone in Ukraine lives in apartments. But your great grandmother lives in the outskirts of the country. We call it a dacha, it’s sort of lik We call it a dacha, it’s sort of like a farm, only smaller.” my dad says. “A farm? You mean like with chickens, pigs, cows and all that stuff?” I ask, a look of disgust on my face. “Well there are a few chickens I believe. There’s mostly vegetables, fruits, and organic stuff like that.” So now, not only will I have to live with strangers in an unfamiliar country, but I will also have to live on a farm. He asked us to visit our homeland for the summer because my grandmother is very ill, this might be our last chance to see her. We‘re going to Ukraine tomorrow.” My grandmother? Our homeland? Ukraine? I could not believe it. Moments ago, I was happily packing for France, and now I’ll be sadly packing for Ukraine? I know that I should have felt some sort of remorse for my great grandmother, maybe some guilt for not wanting to visit her, but I just couldn’t help but think how my birthday present which I had been planning for for months was ruined. This was not right. This was not what was supposed to happen. This was not the way my summer was going to turn out. No way, no how. “But dad! You promised we’d go to France. We’ve been planning to go for months now, and it is a birthday present after all. Ukraine isn’t even my homeland. I know nothing about the place, or the people! We can’t go for the entire summer, we just can’t.” I said stubbornly, trying to fight back. “Well then you can learn about the place and the people this summer. The decision is final, Anna. We’re going.” And with those words, my summer flipped around faster than you could say "France no more!". The airport was crowded when we got there. People were whizzing by carrying huge amounts of luggage and suitcases. I wondered where they were all going to spend their summer vacation. Definitely not Ukraine. Some people wore sunhats and flip flops, as if they were ready to jump on to the beach in some tropic place like Hawaii at the very second. I’ll admit, I was jealous of them. My plain capris and t-shirt definitely did not show any excitement towards where I’m going. My dad is holding a book straight up to his face, as if avoiding eye contact with me. His bony face looks tense and distraught. His short chestnut hair stands up straight and I know that if it grew out a little bit more it will be just as wavy as mine. To be honest, I love my hair. It’s very long and wavy with a golden tint in it from my mom. Another good thing about it is that it covers my chubby cheeks. I was “gifted” as my dad would say with permanent baby fat, just like my mom. My whole life everyone made fun of me because of it, but my dad says that they suit me. What a lie. I think that he said that because they remind him of my mom. She was a beautiful woman, and I will admit that chubby cheeks did suit her. The thing is, she died when I was only a few months old. It was in a car accident back in Ukraine. I think that’s why my dad decided to move to Canada in the first place - to forget the nightmare he lived through of my mom being gone. That’s also probably why we’ve never visited relatives back in our homeland. To be honest, my dad tries avoiding the country every chance he gets. But I guess this was just too much for him. more

What do you think of the beginning of my teen novel? When life gives you lemons… make lemonade. That’s what my dad always tells me when I’m stuck in a crappy situation. But to be honest, I don’t think that advice will work this one out. It feels as if I’ve been given rotten lemons, with no juice left in them, and there is just no point in making lemonade anymore. Only hours ago, I was packing for my summer vacation to France. Yes, France! You know, that country in Europe with the fashion capital of the world, and some of the most beautiful architecture ever created? Well anyways, I was happily packing away, minding my own business, when my dad knocks on my door. I was surprised by this because, to be honest, my dad and I never talk. He’s always busy on his laptop in his office, or he’s at work. It’s always one or the other. “Come in.” I said, wondering what in the world was it that he wanted to tell me. As soon as I saw the expression on his face, I knew it couldn’t be good. My dad always has one look on his face - plain, and bored. But at that moment, it was devastated. I wondered what on earth could have happened for my father to have been so sad. Millions of thoughts ran through my mind as I thought of all the possibilities. Did the fancy hotel that we were staying at in Paris burn down? Did our flight get cancelled? Turns out it was neither of those. It was much, much worse. “We’re not going to France, Anna.” he said with the most stern look I had ever seen. “What? W-w-why?” I asked, sadness sweeping over me. “I got a call from my mother last night.
