I have just gone through a 6 month long grievance procedure at a college where I have a variable hours contract. My immediate manager (newly promoted) didn't give me any hours this year because I questioned the way she was setting up courses (I am much more experienced than her, and she later adopted my suggestions). She discriminates against BME students ("those people" are not "our niche" - the depute principle backs her up saying the college is not "set up" for them). Any examination of the students demographics will reveal almost no BME students at all in the whole college. She has bullied me and another colleague on several occasions. The colleague had to take time off work and was on antidepressants as a result of the bullying. She bravely took out a grievance last year, which was also unsuccessful. The depute principle says he "really rates her" so we all feel she is being protected. When we approached her manager about her behaviour, she said she wasn't interested in "tittle-tattle". The working environment is like working in a straitjacket as she lashes out at anyone who makes a suggestion or makes the tiniest mistake. She has had me and others in tears on several occasions. I want to take this higher, perhaps to the board of governors or to the governmental department that funds our programmes because she is getting away with bullying and racial discrimination. I am not interested in working there again and have another job now, but kept myself on the payroll to go through the grievance procedure. Should I resign, or should I keep on the payroll for the sake of credibilty if I am pursuing the discrimination/bullying issues further? Thanks for any help - also any suggestions about how to proceed. PS I have been working for 35 years (7 in this college) and have never had any workplace problems. Have also managed other people successfully. Wherever I work I have always had excellent feedback so am not negative or a troublemaker, but feel I need to speak out. PPS This is what happens when the suits take over in education..DP actually said to me that "academics are opinionated" , implying we are difficult to work with and we need a right wing toughnut to keep us under control. It's the kind of place you are mocked at for being a vegetarian and creative innovations in teaching are dismissed as "airy fairy". moreResolved Question: How do mormons believe both the Bible and the book of mormon to be true?
They contradict each other in numerous places. One example: In Matthew 2:1-8 it reads "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also." In the book of mormon it reads in alma 7:10 "And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God." Galatians 1:6-9 and Revelation 22:18-19 Can you explain why these passages don't apply to the book of mormon? I'm guessing that you believe that God wrote the Bible through man.. so don't you think He would have told them what to write so it would apply to the whole Bible? moreResolved Question: what do these civil war quotes say to you....?
"What passes as standard American history is really Yankee history written by New Englanders or their puppets to glorify Yankee heroes and ideals." --- Dr. Grady McWhiney "Governor, if I had foreseen the use these people desired to make of their victory, there would have been no surrender at Appomattox, no, sir, not by me. Had I seen these results of subjugation, I would have preferred to die at Appomattox with my brave men, my sword in this right hand." --- General Robert E. Lee, CSA - as told to Texas ex-governor F. W. Stockdale ". . .a union that can only be maintained by swords and bayonets and in which strife and civil war are to take the place of brotherly love and kindness has no charm for me. I shall mourn for my country and for the welfare of mankind. If the union is dissolved and the government disrupted, I shall return to my native state and share the miseries of my people, and save in defence, will draw my sword on none." --- General Robert E. Lee, CSA "My shoes are gone; my clothes are almost gone. I'm weary, I'm sick, I'm hungry. My family have been killed or scattered. And I have suffered all this for my country. I love my country. But if this war is ever over, I'll be damned if I ever love another country." --- Confederate Soldier During Retreat To Appomattox "There are at present many Coloured men in the Confederate Army doing duty not only as cooks, servants and labourers, but real soldiers, having muskets on their shoulders, and bullets in their pockets". --- Frederick Douglas - Autumn Of 1861 Here is one more. Asked Of Abraham Lincoln... "Why not let the South go in peace?" Response Of Abraham Lincoln... "I can't let them go. Who would pay for the government?" moreResolved Question: Texas beginning to have doubts about the Death Penalty?
More than half the executions carried out in the U.S. are carried out by Texas, but confidence in the judicial system is plummeting after several high profile cases where convictions have been over turned by new scientific evidence. Juries are now less likely to convict people of murder due to these scandals. The governor of Illinois declared a moratorium a few years ago because it was discovered that more people on death row had been released due to new evidence over convictions than had been executed. Even a former Governor of Texas, a fervent supporter of the death penalty, has changed his mind due to the amount of convictions over turned, and the execution of a man in 2004 for the murder of his 3 children in an arson attack, for which he has now been pardoned after new evidence. The subsequent governor even sacked the head of a commission into this miscarriagege of justice, and placed his own man in charge to try and suppress the evidence of 'junk science' used to convict. I know many people see capital punishment as an easy solution, but when we see so many convictions being quashed, do you ever see the U.S. giving up the death penalty? http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/nov/15/texas-death-penalty-execution-us moreResolved Question: Prisoners drunk on hand gel: how much do you think they would have to have consumed to get drunk?
"Alcohol hand gel meant to combat swine flu has been banned from a prison after inmates became embroiled in a drunken brawl after drinking it. The detergent was meant to beat off the threat of swine flu in the Verne Prison on Portland, Dorset, reports the Daily Telegraph. However, instead of rubbing it into their hands, inmates at the category C prison have been placing their mouths over the dispensers and consuming it. Prison officers had expressed their concerns at suddenly having to deal with a number of drunken convicts before the brawl erupted. It is thought one prisoner became aggressive after downing the gel and started a fist fight with another inmate. Now the governor of the Verne has removed all of the dispensers from the prison. Andy Fear, a member of the Verne's Prison Officer's Association committee, said: "These canisters were originally put out because of the swine flu threat. "It was subsequently reported by some association members working here that the inmates had been incorrectly using them, for want of a better phrase. The suspicion that was reported to us was that some of the inmates had drunk them. Of course some of the officers expressed concerns over potentially having to deal with prisoners who have had a drink." Tim Roberts, branch chairman of the POA, said the association had raised concerns when it was first announced that the gel dispensers were being placed in the prison. He said: "We had reservations when the plan was first mooted. Our members have been concerned and the latest incident seems to bear out those concerns." http://www.anonava.com/news moreResolved Question: Did Umar cause the Battle of Karbala?
When Umar was the Caliph, he conquered many foreign lands such as Syria, Jordan, Jerusalem, Egypt and Persia. He placed his governors in these lands. So he was responsible for the growth of power of Muawiya ibn Abu Sufyan in Syria. By initially placing Muawiya in power, Umar was responsible for the massacre in Karbala which took place at the orders of Muawiya's evil son Yazid? So he was responsible for the deaths of the family and companions of the Prophet (saww) in Karbala? No... We can't say the Prophet (saww) caused the Battle of Karbala by not disclosing the evil of Umar before. The Prophet (saww) and all the Masoomeen knew everything- the past, present and future. But they didn't try and do something which was not the will of Allah (swt). Everything the Prophet (saww) did was for the sake of Allah (swt) and Islam. He never did anything just for himself. If he told everyone that Umar was evil, he would be going against the will of Allah (swt) because it was the will of Allah (swt) for the Battle of Karbala to take place. @►Sonja K◄- They didn't commit suicide. They knew how and when they're gonna die. They didn't kill themselves, they just followed the will of Allah (swt). For example, if Imam Ali (as) didn't do to the Mosque to pray that morning, because he didn't want to die, he would be running away from the will of Allah (swt). @h.d.- I'm not "Paki", I'm Pakistani. All Shias don't say that Ali (as) is God. I don't believe that. Shias don't believe that. Actually, all the 11 Imams (as) were Shaheed- martyrs. A martyr never dies. @►Sonja K◄- Wth are you talking about?! You can't prove Shias wrong... Face it! Stop trying to. They're meant to follow the will of Allah (swt) I'm not blaming them! @►Sonja K◄- I'm not blaming people. I'm just telling the truth. moreResolved Question: Is Catholicism changing for the better?

She is hell bent on turning it into a school for autistics, it's the only school for miles around that always has places available in all year groups at any time, always begging parents for donations even though it's a state school and supported by our local church so the school gets funding from the church, the OFSTED reports are always at grade 3 which is satisfactory which is one up from the bottom grade 4 which is inadequate. I have got my child on a waiting list for another school but places are like gold-dust and I'm desperate to change schools. I and a lot of other parents are not happy with the head. The deputy head is a far better person for the job. Some good advice from governors maybe or perhaps if anyone has been in a similar situation, what did you do, what happened? Thanks. moreResolved Question: Westport Connecticut how did and now how do you honor the memory of EARTHA Kitt?
It has been some mnoths since her untimely passing. But we will never forget the persona and legend of Eartha Kitt. I have been and will continue to crusade for recognition for ms. Kitt in my state, South Carolina. Which is also the birthpalce of Ms. Kitt. The city of NORTH South Carolina. Unfortunately I have gotten little response in her city or in my state as to any recognition. I have called my Mayor, my Governor. I did get lucky when 2 lawmakers were willing to hear me: Gilda Cobb Hunter and Bakari Sellers. But their office needs me to bring in some evidence from other places in reference to having some type of recognition for her. So Westport help me please or anyone out there from something big to even something small. A day a ceremony, a proclamation,a scholarship and so on. I had this cash job, my 2nd part time job doing the same thing I am paid properly for in my first job. This 2nd job was to help this woman out because i knew how to do it, (its a job that requires allot of training) she had a very sick husband who then died. I helped/worked for her all through him being in ITU then the funeral. I opened the place while she was away and then she came back 4 weeks ago, she said she wanted me to give up my other job, if i couldn't I would have to leave with immediate effect, This was in a letter I received the day before I was due to work for her, I think she sacked me, she promised to pay by return of post then didn't. I then made a mistake, because I was working all hours at my other job, I sent my husband in to see where my wages where. He showed her the letter she written saying pay by return of post! Big Mistake, she flew at him saying 'I'm a 'parish councillor' and I have status in the community, of course I pay her her when I get time - then she wrote me a letter slagging me and him off and said he bullied her, (he didn't even raise his voice hes too Professional for that) We are bar/banned form her premises this includes a post office. So I now cant go and see her, She then paid me £150 short by Business cheque. She had said to me it was a cash job! I am now going to tell the tax office. I have taken legal advice & written to her with my hours. She thinks she doesn't have to give me any paid notice. I will not slag her off in any communications. I will follow all the correct channels but am worried as she is also a Governor at my child's school - I think she will make my life a living hell. I now can't go in my local shop to buy a newspaper, she owns that too! I never set out to fight I just wanted to help her and earn a bit more money? Why does this happen? What would you do? Can she use her position to reep her revenge? She is a nasty piece of work when she gets going! HELP I love my local parish and community. Extra - I have told the tax office declaired my earning and have NI excemption cert. for this job - I wanted it above board its this woman that doesnt? I have contacted legal tribunal to help. I wont forget it or work illegally but employers do! moreResolved Question: UK: isn't it time we gave up our pretenses and accepted a place as the 51st US state?

This is a report, copied and pasted, from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4690356.stm dated 7th Feb 2006. I fail to grasp the idea of argentinian police being unarmed, i thought they were one of the most heavily armed in the world, so how did this happen???? "Argentina protest turns violent Protesters in southern Argentina have stormed a police station, killing an officer and injuring 14 others. The clashes took place in the city of Las Heras, as more than 200 oil workers tried to free one of their leaders who had been detained on Monday. The officers were said to have been unarmed. The federal government has sent police reinforcements to the area. The oil workers have been protesting for the past two weeks, setting up roadblocks to demand salary increases. Local media said they surrounded the station early Tuesday morning and threw stones at it. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. An officer was shot dead during clashes that lasted two hours. Among the injured policemen, five are reported to have received bullet wounds. The Governor of the province of Santa Cruz, Sergio Acevedo, said that none of the officers in the police station were carrying firearms. He called the incident a tragedy and insisted that violence was not justified. Argentina's Interior Minister Anibal Fernandez condemned the attack." moreResolved Question: The death of Baby 'P'?

I spent time in prison after committing various petty offences. I have aspergers and Im very hyper, while in prison because of numerous "Practical Jokes" getting out of hand, I was placed in isolation. I was in isolation for a year and the only real contact i had was my personal officer, but he misused his power and physically and mentally abused me as well as taking advantage of my communication problems at the time. I have been out of prison for some time now, but recently received a letter from this guy, who is now in prison himself for similar offences to what he done to me. I want to forgive him, but my family think I should hate him. I understand that what he did was wrong, but I also understand that I was a hard person to be able to work with and I must have pushed him to his limits for him to result in what he did. But at the same time he kept me sane, I was on my own and hated been alone, he kept me company often coming into my cell and sitting with me, but at the same time he abused that trust I had in him by fooling me into thinking I needed him when all the time he was hurting me. He was the one who consoled me when I was depressed, gave me affection and interacted with me, when the rest of the prison remained indifferent, the only other contact I had in there during that year was when officers brought my meal and left and when Chaplains popped in to check me and the doc or governor, none of them stayed to chat, they where all just doing thier job as quick as they could and leaving, so I had no interaction, this guy changed that, he spent time with me, done stuff with me and supported me, but then took advantage of the trust i placed in him. I want to forgive him, expecially as now the shoe seems to be on the other foot, he is in prison and im out here, he is in isolation to protect him from other prisoners, because he's an ex-officer. Part of me understand where he was coming from, I needed some structure and routine cos I was out of control, but then I also acknowledge that what he did is wrong. Should i forgive and support him now he is in need of that support, or should I do as my family say and turn my back on him and show him no forgiveness? The abuse was mainly of a physical nature and seemed quite harsh at the time, but I can also see that it was his way of being strict with me. If I had to weigh up the situation i would say he did more good then bad, he taught me respect, he made me think about my actions as well as giving me the attentiona and affection i needed. He made me feel human too, as all the other staff in the place treated me like an animal, they wouldn't open the door if there wasn't more than two of them, he never treated me like that, but then at the same time some of the things he did to me where horrific and he made me out to be a self-harmer to cover marks he had made, which made me feel inferior as I would not abuse my own body to the degree he was making out I had. moreResolved Question: In England, is it a crime to rig the election of the board of governors of a state funded college?

Ok let's lay down some facts: One: She was only chosen as VP in an attempt to get Hillary votes. Two: She has no idea what she is supposed to be doing. Three: The Republicans have hid her from the media's view so that she can't be interviewed. Four: She went to five Universities, but left after only a maximum of three semesters of each place. Five: She has never been to a foreign country even though she was a governor, even though she was only a few miles from Russia. Six: She FAILED in the Vice debate, lying more than once to save her skin. Seven: She spent $150,000 on her wardrobe. Eight: Her actions go against all of the things McCain says. Nine: She supports big oil and has tried to make documented deals with oil companies so that they can drill in Alaska. Ten: She wants to: a) Build a bridge, costing millions, to attach Alaska to a small island with 30 people inhabiting it. b) Remove all texts in Alaska regarding evolution (removal of the right to read what one wants) c) Spend over 1 million dollars of American tax dollars randomly and unnecessarily giving money to the people of her home town. These are just 10 things, not even going into the policies she supports. I don't have a problem with McCain, but he definitely shot himself in the foot by choosing Palin. Male and female inmates would be housed together and nearer their homes as part of the proposals. State seeks halt to 'funneling' Lawmakers have used school to direct funds to f avorite charities By Diane Knich (Contact) The Post and Courier Thursday, June 5, 2008 The Post and Courier Sen. John Matthews Rep. David Mack, D-North Charleston Previous story Read Sundays story "Schoo ls act as money funnels". South Carolina State University's Board of Trustees wants state lawmakers to stop using the school to channel tax dollars to their favorite charities. Board Chairman Maurice Washington said at a board retreat in C harleston Wednesday that the board will ask its lawyer whether it can legally adopt a policy prohibiting the practice. The group was responding to a Post and Courier investigation that ran in the newspaper on Sunday. The analysis revealed that So uth Carolina legislators used the state's public universities to quietly channel nearly $2 million in tax dollars to their favorite charities during the past three years. Some legislators sent the money to nonprofit groups with which they have direct tie s. That includes Rep. David Mack, D-North Charleston, who sent $700,000 through S.C. State to a nonprofit where he works and receives money. It also includes Sen. John Matthews, D-Bowman, who sent $350,000 to a charity where he is a nonvoting mem ber of the group's board of directors and his wife is the board's vice chairwoman. Matthews also sent another $150,000 through S.C. State for a "historical analysis study on African American wealth creation," although much of that money has not y et been spent. The lawmakers' decisions to place money in S.C. State's budget for other groups "weren't done in consultation with university officials," Washington said in an interview Tuesday. When the board first learned during a budget presentation at its retreat in June 2007 that money was being passed through the university, "We thought it was a little weird," Washington said. "It didn't seem like an appropriate thing for us to be involved with." Board members asked former Pr esident Andrew Hugine and John Smalls, the university's senior vice president for finance, "to end the practice," Washington said. Smalls said Tuesday that he doesn't have any choice but to pass on money that legislators place in the university's budget for other organizations. "These are legislators. This was passed by the General Assembly," Smalls said. The newspaper's analysis looked at seven of the state's largest institutions of higher learning and found that lawmakers funneled mone y through five of them: Clemson University, Francis Marion University, South Carolina State University, the University of South Carolina and Winthrop University. Here's how it works: State legislators take money from the state budget and tuck it into universities' state appropriations, sometimes without the schools' knowledge. The universities then hand over that money to the charities. Among the universities surveyed, the largest amount of money, $1.2 million, was passed through the bud get at S.C. State. Smalls said the funds show up as specific items in the university's budget. "We didn't request them," Smalls said. "They kind of appeared." Smalls said when such items appear in the university's budget, he does nothing u ntil "the appropriate legislator calls." Then he asks the legislator to send a letter that includes the name and address of the receiving agency, a tax identification number and a budget. After he receives the information, he said, he sends the mo ney. "If money is put in your budget for a purpose," Smalls said, "I don't know what to do about it. The ideal is not to put it in there." When lawmakers funnel money, he said, they "put the agency in a very precarious position. These tend to be legislators who are very supportive to the institution." Roger Leaks, an alumnus and member of the university's Board of Visitors, which is different from the Board of Trustees, said some alumni he's talked to in the past few days have said they wish the university could stop the practice and use the money on campus. The university has many needs, he said, especially to improve the poor condition of many older buildings on which maintenance has been delayed. "The way I see it," Leaks said, "if the money comes into the university, it should be used by the university, not diverted somewhere else." Reach Diane Knich at 937-5491 or dknich@postandcourier.com. Governor Sanford found what he thought were 69 items we could do without this year. Just think what he DIDN’T find! I’ve often heard that “people in the know” have ways to hide things that can never be found but with this year being the “Year of Disclosure” (Earmark Reform, Campaign Finance R eports online), I thought we had stopped all this. *********** Schools act as money funnels By Diane Knich The Post and Courier Sunday, June 1, 2008 South Carolina legislators are using some of the state’s public univers ities as funnels, quietly channeling nearly $2 million in tax dollars to their favorite charities during the past three years, a Post and Courier investigation found. Some legislators sent this money to nonprofit groups with which they have direc t ties. For instance, state Rep. David Mack, D-North Charleston, has sent $700,000 through South Carolina State University to a Columbia-based nonprofit organization where he works and receives money. But it was far from an isolated case. The new spaper’s analysis found that legislators funneled money through most of the state’s major public institutions of higher learning. The practice raises questions about conflicts of interest and how legislators distribute public money. “It l ooks like a way to camouflage money to do something they can’t do or don’t want to do directly, something that might be politically embarrassing,” said John Crangle, director of the government watchdog group Common Cause South Carolina. Here’s ho w it works: State legislators take money from the state budget and tuck it into universities’ state appropriations — sometimes without the schools’ prior knowledge. The universities then hand over that money to the charities. The Post and Courier requested information, under the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act, from seven of the state’s largest public universities about money legislators had them pass through their budgets to charity groups over the past five years. Legislators went th rough all of the schools except the College of Charleston and The Citadel to funnel tax dollars. State politicians for years have used budget mechanisms to send tax dollars to pet projects. But the amounts tend to be higher for money funneled thr ough universities. In Mack’s case, he sent $300,000 to S.C. State in the 2006-07 school year and asked the university to send the money to a Columbia-based nonprofit organization called the Palmetto Center for Advocacy. The center conducts health education programs statewide, especially obesity prevention programs. Mack sent the group another $400,000 through S.C. State in the 2007-08 school year. Anastasia Shaw, deputy director for Palmetto Center for Advocacy, said the $700,000 from the state is the only money the group has brought in so far. But, she said, the center is “looking to diversify funding.” According to the group’s Web site, Mack is employed as its “outreach director.” In a telephone interview, Mack said he now does consulting work for the group and previously was the organization’s interim director. He also said he is paid for all of his work with the center but declined to say how much. By law, nonprofits must allow the public to view tax forms, w hich include salaries of directors. But the center is relatively new, so its tax records are not yet publicly available. When asked why he chose to send the money through the university instead of going through the state’s competitive grants prog ram, Mack said, “We just chose that way.” S.C. State benefited from the arrangement, Mack said, because Palmetto Center for Advocacy organized some health education programs on the university’s campus. Another legislator who used S.C. Stat e as a funnel was Sen. John Matthews, D-Bowman. Matthews sent $150,000 in the 2006-07 school year and $200,000 in the 2007-08 school year through the university to the Lower Orangeburg-Upper Dorchester Community Development Corp. Matthews said th e program mostly helps low-income people in the high-poverty region prepare for and land jobs. According to the group’s Web site, Matthews is a non-voting member of the organization’s board of directors. His wife, Geraldine Matthews, is the board ’s vice chairwoman and serves on the board’s personnel, finance and overview and assessment committees. Matthews said Wednesday that neither he nor his wife are compensated for their work with the organization. He also said that he gave up his ro le as a voting member of the board when he brought state money to the organization. The program was launched with a private grant, Matthews said, but the money ran out. He’s temporarily helping it stay afloat with state funds, he said. Ma tthews said he was “just following tradition” by passing money through a state institution to a nonprofit group. Matthews also passed $150,000 through S.C. State in the 2006-07 school year for a “historical analysis study on African-American comm unity wealth creation.” The project is looking at impediments for blacks in the areas of education and economic development and will provide “a comprehensive analysis of the Interstate 95 corridor,” which basically runs along the state’s poverty belt, he said. The university sent $50,000 of the $150,000 for that project to DESA, a Columbia-based management consulting firm, to complete a portion of the project, Matthews said. DESA President Diane Sumpter said her company will conduct focu s groups and gather information that will be used to make videos to help low-income parents become more involved in their children’s education. Matthews said the other $100,000 will be dispersed at S.C. State to complete the rest of the report. < BR> Joe Pearman, assistant vice president of business and finance and vice president of financial affairs and management information systems at S.C. State, said so far, none of the $100,000 has been spent, and only $19,000 has been committed for salar ies. Evelyn Fields, who is chairwoman of the university’s Department of Education and in charge of the project, said the money will be used to gather baseline research data to develop a program for culturally relevant teaching for children in pov erty. At the University of South Carolina, legislators funneled $225,000 to the Epilepsy Foundation of South Carolina over the past three years, said Russ McKinney, director of communications for the university. Barbara Comar Brothers, ex ecutive director of the Epilepsy Foundation, said she doesn’t know which legislators are involved in her organization receiving the money. But, she said, representatives from the foundation met with staffers from the House Ways and Means Committee to req uest the funds. The foundation used the money for a program that trains state employees to better deal with people with epilepsy in emergency situations, Brothers said. The university also passed $100,000 to EngenuitySC for the National H ydrogen Association Convention, McKinney said. The university, he said, has no record of specific legislators involved in such transactions. Kyle Michel, a lobbyist for EngenuitySC, said the money will be used to promote South Carolina, especiall y the Columbia region, as “a place for hydrogen fuel cell economic development” during the 2009 convention. Neil McLean, executive director for the group, said the money came from the Legislature but no specific legislator. Sen. Nikki G. Setzler, D-West Columbia, and Rep. Joan Brady, R-Columbia, are members of EngenuitySC’s board of trustees, he said. Legislators also used other schools as funnels, including Clemson, Winthrop and Francis Marion universities. None of the legislato rs involved in those transactions were employed by the organizations to which they passed money, nor were they members of the groups’ boards of directors. –Sen. Harvey Peeler, R-Gaffney, sent $115,000 in the 2007-08 school year through Winthrop t o the Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce to expand the Lake Wylie Small Business Center. Chamber President Susan Bromfield said the money allows the group to provide a place for small-business owners to get a solid start. She said Peeler has no conne ction to the chamber other than being the state senator who represents the area. Peeler did not return calls seeking comment. –Sen. John Hawkins, R-Spartanburg, sent $100,000 in the 2007-08 school year through Clemson to the Spartanburg H umane Society. Hawkins has no connection to the group other than being the state senator who represents the area, he said. He also said he would have been willing to use the state’s competitive grant program or any other funding mechanism, “but this work ed.” –Frances Marion University has funneled $187,294 to the Mount Pleasant-based Palmetto Project over the last three school years, and nearly $300,000 has been passed through the university over the past five years. John Kispert, vice president for business affairs for the university, said he is unaware of the name of the legislator associated with the money. –Kispert said the university receives correspondence about the money from Palmetto Project Executive Director Steve Skardon. Skar don said the money has been coming from the Legislature for years, but not from a specific lawmaker. He said the money has been used for the Omega Project. According to the group’s Web site, that project “offers intensive training to those commun ities looking to improve the quality of public dialogue and personal trust among citizens of diverse racial and cultural backgrounds.” Skardon said the Palmetto Project doesn’t include current public officials on its board or staff because of the potential for conflicts of interest. Posted by nathansnews ************************************************************************************************* Governor: Budget Unconstitutional, Could Lead to Legal Challenge GOVERNOR SAYS A SUIT MAY BE NEEDED OVER CONSTITUTIONALITY OF BUDGET Columbia, S.C. - June 5, 2008 - Governor Mark Sanford today said the Genera l Assembly may have broken the law in passing a budget they knew to be out of balance - and therefore unconstitutional - and that doing so could open the state up to a legal challenge. In budget hearings earlier this year, the Educatio n and Corrections departments both told the legislature that next year's budget would force them to run a deficit, to the tune of $28 million. In fact, when warned repeatedly about potential deficits at the Department of Corrections, Senator Hugh Leatherman suggested multiple times in an April 2 meeting that the agency run a deficit. In the state Cons! titutio n, Article X, Section 7(a) requires the General Assembly "to provide by law for a budget process to insure that annual expenditures of state government do not exceed annual state revenue." Since the legislature has now passed a budget in which they know and are fully aware this requirement will not be met, the governor said today that the budget in effect b reaks the law. "There's no way around the fact that if the General Assembly has passed a budget that they know will require deficits, then it's not a balanced budget, period," Gov. Sanford said. "We have real concerns about the legality of this budget - and at this point, we're not convinced that a lawsuit would be a bad thing, given that it may indeed be the only way to prevent the legislature from engaging in this kind of recklessness in the future." Last week, the go vernor vetoed 69 items from the legislature's spending plan, for a total of $72 million, saying that m! oney sh ould be put toward the anticipated deficits at Education and Corrections. Of those 69 vetoes, the legislature only sustained five that had implications for the state's general fund, for a total of $369,000. -#####- Joel Sawyer Communications Director Office of Gov. Why doesn't a Christian sign on a bicycle or on a street corner produce the following results anymore? And why doesn't God bring judgment on those who ridicule Christianity? BY: Gerald Sutek Sin Stifled "The entrance of thy word giveth light." Sin is done in darkness both spiritual and, many times, literal. When someone shines a spotlight on the activities of sin, the rats tend to run and hide. I know from many years of experience on the street, that sin can be hampered, stifled, kept in its hiding place, and at a bare minimum, if the light of the glorious gospel of Christ is consistently shined on the public streets. Many Pastors have complained to us about the spiritually cold conditions of their cities, and that the blatantcy of sin is so prevalent. My reply, drawing from experiences pastoring a church with a street ministry, is that we preachers have been given charge of the spiritual heaters and lights. We will be held responsible for the amount of spiritual warmth and visibility in our communities. I have seen many bars closed as a result of consistent public witness against them. I have seen lesbian bars and queer bars boarded up for Jesus. I have personally witnessed a demonstration of 150 homosexuals against the laws and legislation of the State of Florida foiled and squelched because there were some preachers willing to stand in the gap. I have watched the activities of homosexual churches be drastically altered as a result of public preaching. I have seen governors, legislators, and supreme court judges forced to publicly choose whether to identify with Jesus Christ or to deny Him. Do you have a particular problem in your community? What have you got to lose by trying to solve it with a public witness? EDIT: I did not write this article. It was written by Gerald Sutek in "Street Preacher's Manual". She also worked on CBBC..so expect some TV appeals from the McCanns slotted in-between kids programs soon too! Wouldnt anyone with any respect for their careers and image, be distancing themselves from the McCanns? Or is help from these people one of the "calling in of favours" as said by Uncle Brian, do you think? Choosing partial personalities to cover explosive issues in explosive places is not the way to agitate for world peace. I have personally never heard Jon Snow do an interview that was mildly proSemitic or even impartial when it comes to the issue of Israel and/or Jews. This is not to say that I have heard ALL of Snow`s interviews. But the ones which I have heard are notoriously biased. The funny thing is it is always the ones who are Jews but in the closet (and this does not necessarily apply to Snow although I would have no way of knowing) that are the nastiest antiSemites. Jewish history is full of examples of Jews, not excepting Judas, who have betrayed other Jews. The Hollywood moguls are examples. The Jews (da Capo??) who ran the Warsaw ghetto are other examples. The Jewish governor appointed by the Romans who sentenced Jesus is yet another example. The Jewish issue (if there still is one) is NOT the Iraq issue.
