Online Video Game Design Questions and Answers

Open Question: Why is everyone so pumped for Medal of Honor over Black Ops?

Is it just me or does the new Medal of Honor look a HELL of a lot like Battlefield:BC2? I mean, the sniper in the video is the same, the shooting reticle, the grenade physics, it's all the same? I'll start out by saying I'm a massive COD fan, and I could care less that there are video game nerds out there that don't like it because of whatever irrelevant reason they do. Smaller levels mean A) more action and B) more camping, it's inevitable. Plus COD's levels are quite realistic, with all the buildings, cars, alleyways etc. so to have no camping is nearly impossible. I own Battlefield:BC2, and have logged probably 30 hours on it, but it's tiring, and not really that entertaining. The levels are too large, the respawning is ineffective, and the classes are too small and ranking up is too quick. I don't understand those that criticize the current COD franchise as being too easy and not being for skilled players, because that notion is constantly proved wrong when you see who is at the top of the scoreboards (i.e experienced players, not newbies). Until another franchise proves that it can be original, be as deep and addictive as COD, have such intuitive and perfectly designed controls, and just be as consistently fun, I see no reason to not just assume that COD will continue to be THE pinnacle in console online FPS even when Medal of Honor is released  more

Open Question: is this a good game design school?

so i want to go to college with a game designing major, and was looking at becker college.. the princeton review or whatever says its the #4 school for that major! I'm reading the major description: "The Game Design course curriculum offers a foundation of traditional drawing, illustration, and art courses in addition to courses in 2D and 3D animation, audio, storytelling, character development, and game technology. The Game Design student also develops skills in scriptwriting, computer programming, animation, project management and online media production. Students learn industry-related software such as: Gamemaker, Flash, Maya, and the complete suite of Adobe design software products.", and I'm wondering, are those listed software what i SHOULD be learning? like adobe design/flash? I've never heard of the other ones but I feel like video games are made with... other software? Would this be a good school? Anyone go there??  more

Resolved Question: what should I write for the ending of my speech?

As time has passed during the centuries there has now come a time when children have started becoming more inclined towards gaming then anything else. You may think game addiction is not a serious problem, but it can destroy peoples lives. This addiction has lead to loss of jobs, relationships and has even broken apart families. When you and your friends were playing video games and is always wanting to play the newest games. Have you ever thought of this as a disease or addiction? There are many symptoms when you may or may not have a game addiction. For example “Lack of control”, If you were unable to control the time you have on a computer or any Gaming device and spends 15 to 20 minutes, but always extends the time to several hours. Negative Impact on Other areas of life, If you spend a large amount of time on a computer or video game console and you are constantly spending the amount of time each day. You will begin to not be aware of your distant between your family and friends, Homework may go unfinished, causing grades to slip. In other serious situation, some teens, for example may choose video games rather then taking a shower. The most important signs you see from a friend, family member, or yourself with a game addiction is if when you start playing a game and are happy most of the time, until you are no longer allowed to play and eventually have to stop, you begin to be angry or upset. If you ever kept thinking about going online or playing when you are suppose to be focusing on more important situations. Or when you spend more time on your computer or video game controller, then spending time with your friends. These warning signs will provide your parents, friends, and other family member to look for if they are concerned about someone’s use of video, computer, or internet games. As technology moves forward, so does graphic violent nature of the video games. Violent games are most addictive and cause the most issues, then any other kind of game. This is one of the biggest problems because out of the most school shootings in recent years have been most gamers causing the shooting, There choice of games were dark and violent. In 1980 they released sony PlayStation, and thats when violence became an issue and threw the years while the graphics became lifelike, the more violent games, the more violent behavior. In order to win in violent games you have to be the aggressor. So rather then watching the violence on television, its like committing the violent acts. Most researchers acknowledge that this kind of active participation affects a person's thought patterns, at least in the short term. Another factor that concerns both researchers and parents is that violence in video games is often rewarded rather than punished. In army and sniper games, players "level up" based in part on how many people they kill. If played frequently enough, games like this can skew a young person's perception of violence and its consequences. Parents should realize the amount of time their children spend gaming and watch closely for any negative effects. Video games are designed to be addictive, most designers make the game challenging, which allow players to achieve small accomplishments to keep playing. Its like gambling which will allow players to have small "wins” that keep them playing. There are several hook’s that make a game addictive. For example High scores, whether trying out the latest edition of Grand Theft Auto or haven’t played a game since Pac-Man, The high score is the most popular hook. When trying to beat the high score it can keep a player playing for hours. Beating the game is another hook, this makes most people play for days. Role playing, allow players to do more than just play they get to actually create the characters in the game and go on an adventure that's somewhat unique to that character. Consequently, there's an emotional attachment to the character, and the story makes it much harder to stop playing. Most people like to spend there spare time playing games, while others there friends, family, school, and even personal hygiene are neglected as nearly every spare moment is spent playing games. so yeah thats my speech, what do I write for the ending?  more

Resolved Question: Is this considered a "business"?

I am 16. I am starting a website over the summer. Users can submit original songs, and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat with other users. I might even put up a place where users can list gig dates and stuff like that. I am hiring a web design firm to create the site. I will sell ad space to make money. I might even sell an ecourse for $20 on "writing the perfect songs". My question is...... Is this website considered a "business", "online business" and/ or "internet company"? People usually think of a business as a company that sells stuff like toys or video games or t shirts. If I call the website tuvwxyz.com, should I also have TUVWXYZ INC. ? Would that mean i am CEO of the website? I am really confused. Please help me. Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Need honesty and suggestions from other parents?

I am a widowed mom. I have 7 kids (no "use birth control" jokes please, some were adopted). I have gotten complaints from my older kids that I am too strict. Honestly, I feel they may be right. At the same time, I'm very nervous about loosening up at all. Can you a) tell me what you think and b) suggest some reasonable ways to loosen up? Thanks so much. The kids are Travis (17), Luke and Charlie (both 13), April and Jean (both 10), Mandy (nearly 7), and Natalie (3). This will be pretty long I think so thanks for your time in advance. Travis - no bedtime, 9:30 curfew, can't drive with other teens/siblings in car unless I'm with him, can watch most R rated movies (not "torture porn" like Saw or Hostel though), can't go out of town by himself, can't stay home overnight by himself, can be online without me there, can play video games/watch TV for about an hour a day, can date if I meet the girl, can't dress like a gangster (boxers showing, etc.), has to do homework as soon as he gets home. Luke and Charlie - can't date, can be dropped off at movies/mall but have to be with friends, can stay home for an hour or so by self, same dress rules as Trav, can watch any PG13 but no R's, no M games, have to be home by dark and 10:00 bedtime on weeknights (none on weekends), can't walk more than about a mile from house by self. April and Jean - can go a few houses down by selves, can't stay home for more than 10 or 15 minutes, can watch a couple PG13s with me, obviously can't date, 9:00 bedtime on weeknights (10 on weekends), can't wear clothes that look like they were designed for teens (see "abercrombie kids"). Mandy: Just G and PG, 8:30 bedtime on weeknights (9:30 on weekends), can go in backyard/in front of house by self but nowhere else, can't stay home alone at all. Natalie: Just G, 7:30 bedtime all the time, can't go anywhere by self (even backyard), obviously is never left home alone. For all kids except Trav, they can't use internet unsupervised. The girls don't like video games so it's not an issue. None can swear at all (includes Lord's name in vain and "suck" "crap" etc.) Have to go to church on Sunday. Are all expected to have good manners (this is Alabama - yes sir no ma'am please thank you hold doors etc). No fast food, no coke, occasional dessert. What can I improve on? What's seems reasonable? I also forgot - my boys (and the girls to an extent) keep wanting to do dangerous sport but honestly the most dangerous sport I'm comfortable with is football. In the past boxing, rodeo, shooting/hunting, rock climbing, have all been things they've requested to do.  more

Resolved Question: Why can't video game systems play imported games?

Don't get me wrong. I understand that they are designed not to and have those region detecting things in them that prevent a Japanese or European game from playing on a North American system. What I want to know is why do they design them not to play foreign games? Especially with online ordering and all, why do they care if we want to buy a Japanese game (for example) and play it over here?  more

Voting Question: How to become a video game designer?

I'm trying to look into getting into a career designing video games. I've been out of high school for about a year now and have been working, breaking my back for barely over minimum wage. I'd like to go back to school to make something of myself but frankly I don't have the first clue where to start. I'd like a little help. Firstly, I would assume there isn't an entire course dedicated solely for video game designing. So when I contact prospective colleges, what courses should I mention interest in? Should I just tell them that I would like a career designing video games? Secondly, I would most likely need a school that offers this in an online education program. I work 12-hour shifts and my schedule would be very hard to work around because I work different days every week all spread out throughout the week. If anyone could help me out, and possibly recommend a school for me to contact, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm in the southwestern Ohio region if that helps at all.  more

Voting Question: nerd rage leads to stalking, are they dangerous or should i ignore?

Hi so maybe 4 to maybe six years ago I posted in a forum regarding a build for a competitive game that was recieved with hostility, I challenged the people slandering build by challenging them to design a build to defeat my own and face me in game I defeated all the people challenged my build and posted it in the forum embarrassing these people pubicly as I defeated them having given them every conceivable advantage. Since then they added me as a friend in the game and began to "stalk" me by labelling their player with information regarding myself. Initially they researched my location and place of study by labelling their character for instance after the most recent topic in my classes or a character in the book I read in class and approaching me in game. And they do this "stalking" religiously literally appearing at any time I play the game (i dont think they do anything else but play video games) After this they added me on other games I play online using email i provided for forum and did the same thing often with my actual name however after all these years its gotten worse they now appear to be able to see all the websites I visit and movies I watch on my computer. has my computer been compromised? how can they do this with only an IP adress and name? However I should point out before you answer that they tried to "hack" into my game account by using the forum password i had in the forum unsuccessfully but triggering an alert warning to entire game base by game provider warning that people were trying to steal accounts using forum passwords . obviously if they could have stolen my account or email the would have and that seems uncompromised but in terms of how are they getting what I do and see on my computer from an IP adress and email escapes me. So basically how could they "view" what someone else sees on their comp using their ip adress and email and to what extent has my comp been compromised?  more

Voting Question: what do you think about art majors and art school in general? is it lame?

There are actually very few people out there who can "draw" and devote there lives to art. Art is actually in the business of communication, and you seem to be in the mindset that "art is for art's sake" Lets start off with drawing. Drawing is the absolute foundation of art, and your sketchbook is much more than a bunch of pretty pictures; it's a collection of thoughts, ideas, drafts, observations, moments, etc. Film is art, too btw, so have fun in your world without any videos, tv, or movies whatsoever. When you shoot a movie, a director most likely graduated from art school or hires artists to plan the movie. Here's where the sketchbook comes in. Do you think movies are born from nothing, but a script? There are storyboards and plus you don't just learn art techniques in art school, you learn how to think and grow with your own ideas. They story and script come from a concept and that concept is what you have to defend for in the art world. Moving on to things I'm more familiar about. Animation is a hybrid between all art forms. There's drawing in hand-drawn animations and in Flash animations. Claymations, and stop-motions are pretty self-explanatory. Here you say "with the computer nowadays you know. no body really needs you to draw anything precisely". That's bull. There's no computer that draws things out for you! Did you see Avatar? That was a movie ten years in the making almost entirely by human hands at computers. Granted, there were actors, but there images were overlaid and CGed as a base. Animation is Is the crossroads between tradition art and digital media and all your cartoons, advertisements, informercials, hell even sports games have animations on them. You know hen you see the scoreboard appear out of nowhere and then when you see reviews and stats on your favorite players? That's animation. Graphic Design is something you'd probably wouldn't be able to live without unless you decided to camp ut in the middle of nowhere. Nearly all advertising on billboards, online, on tv,on everything you own, Coke cans; that is all Graphic Design. Hell, Gaia wouldn't exist without Graphic Design. Every logo, image, everything in your room, is a product of Graphic Design. (Except for your furniture, that was from Industrial Design which is still an artform you couldn't live without.) Think about every logo you know, it from Graphic Design, and again, they know how to draw  more

Resolved Question: What types of coding do I need to learn?

I have a website that I would like to create but I'm not sure exactly what I need to learn to make it. I already have experience designing websites and I know this will be a huge project that will require me to learn a lot but I want to know what types of coding I would need to learn if I were going to make it. Basically the site would allow people to register to become a member for a fee, then they could log in and would be able to take online tests or play online games to earn points, then with those points they could shop in an online store. The point system would be similar to that on neopets.com except the things people would buy would be ebooks, online videos etc... Any advice is appreciated.  more

Resolved Question: Looking for a online game?

Alright, I originally planned on playing a game that I saw in an ad only one problem....I forgot it's name... :-l .....And thought of asking yahoo users if they know it. Detail about it: Slimish style characters, 3D walkable world, moderate detail. Games that are described like that but are NOT what I am looking for: Runescape Wizard101 (Take note that I said slimish style of character design) Other(games that isn't what I was searching for): WoW(World of Warcraft) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- If your answer is a question to my question(which doesn't really make sense "answering a question with a question") Please make sure you have the ability to receive emails from others users as that is the only way I know about to reply from...otherwise I of course won't answer your question... I have searched throughout the internet and found nothing..I dunno if it's a free online game or paid, download required, etc.. In the ad of the game it was actually a video and I saw the slim character design, sword attacks, 3D walkable world and anything else I forgot, like the name lol. Lastly, Please just list any games that you know of so I can check them out and find out if it's the game I want. Please do NOT post sites listing games as I have already said I searched through all popular sites without finding it. Of course, this game is played on the computer not the two major platforms.  more

Resolved Question: What Kind of Laws are There to Protect Consumers Who Bought a Defective Product?

I bought a computer for a little over $4000, I opted for pricey high end hardware, with a 3 year warranty, because of my profession and hobbies (game development and graphic design). Within the first week I begun having issues. to skip the details, issues were due to multiple defective pieces of hardware. hardware that replaced defective hardware was also defective. defective hardware included; video cards, mother board, hard drives, SLI cable, heat sync, and monitor. now computer stopped working all together. I've consistently lost work and important documents because of this. I told them I wanted my money back and they said that returning it is not an option. I'm considering a lawsuit, maybe small claims court and looking for advice. I purchased it from Alienware Co. which is owned by Dell. They only do online transactions to be paid in full. The warranty is good until 2011 It has had to be repaired more than six times under warranty, personally I think that merits a refund. Would anyone know the name of a law or laws that would help? I would prefer answers from Professionals please (lawyers and the like) (If you don't know what your talking about please don't answer with your guesses)  more

Resolved Question: What's the best way to promote my game to gamblers?

I just finished designing a fun little online game that's achieved modest popularity amongst the gaming community. It's a unique game based on video poker and is featured on many gaming sites across the web. The thing is, a lot of gamers visiting those sites are young kids looking for action games, and tend to bypass my game. Many of my poker and poker machine-playing friends really enjoy the game but they don't really play online games and that leads me to think that a huge section of the gambling community will never see it. I want to expose it to the gambling/poker playing community because it's the sort of game many of them would love, but I don't really mix with those crowds online, and don't want to be seen to be spamming. I'm not trying to compete with online casinos, as my game doesn't involve real money and doesn't have fancy graphics, but it is addictive, and a nice distraction from real gambling. Can anyone suggest any free lists, directories, bulletin boards or forums (or anything else) that are gambling oriented and welcome submissions of this type? For anyone interested in looking, the game's called '7 Minute Bash' and you can Google the name and play it on 100s of different sites. Alternatively, here is one such site http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/529189 @Rex Dixon - nice way to promote your site! The emphasis is on 'free' - I'm a poor developer and can't afford advertising. Anyway, 'funny' sites generally do not cater to gamblers :S @checkraise - nice site, thanks for that - I'll definitely be in touch @pdq - Ahem, for a 'TC' you seem to have an incredible level of attention deficit. Did you even read my question? That's the whole point, I want to target gamblers, and not regular gamers, which is why I asked the question in the first place! The reason it appears on gaming sites is because it is a 'game', first and foremost, but that's not necessarily my ideal target audience.  more

Resolved Question: What is a good college for earning a Bachelor in Game Art?

I have decided to go back to college. I graduated in 2006 and never went because I couldn't decide what I wanted to do. Then I realized that I want to be a video game designer. I love to play and I would love to design my own games one day. I am just not sure what would be the right college, I don't want to get student loans and I want to have online classes. The colleges I have considered like Westwood and Univ. of Phoenix I have heard some nasty stories about them. So any information would help thanks.  more

Voting Question: Does anyone know about getting a degree in video game design or development?

Here's a little background. I'm Mexican, I've lived in Mexico all my life (contrary to what narrow-minded Hollywood says, we don't want to get across the US border to "steal" jobs from them). I have a bachelor's degree in Computing Sciences at La Salle University. Later I found the first Latinamerican school about video games and decided to get that bachelor's degree as well. Since it was the first and they were only starting, a bachelor's degree was their only offer. Unfortunately, this school later went through some quite tough growing pains and dropped the video games part of it, leaving only the part about animation and digital art. I've explored other options, but the industry doesn't quite exists here yet, certainly there's no education or school of any kind about it. Since I'm not interested in making movies (either with a group of friends or Pixar) and I'm in no position to move to another country, I was wondering if anyone out there knows about any online degree that applies to video games. Any and all answers will be greatly appreciated. Maybe we could actually start something in this industry here at last. ¡Gracias!  more

Resolved Question: Are there any colleges or universities in Canada that offer programming courses online?

I was thinking of taking a programming course in university one day. I would prefer to do it online because I permanently stopped liking school a lot when I was in grade six, and I finally left when I was in my fourth year of high school (did NOT finish the year). So if I went back to campus to physically be present in class it would feel like I was back at square one and I don't really want that. Does anyone know of any postsecondary educators in Canada that offer online courses in programming and/or video game design? Thanks in advance for your help guys!  more

Voting Question: Drawing Creativity Help?

I am in desperate need of creativity. I am the most left brained thinker ever and it seems like i can hardly even use the right side of my brain. Any time i have to come up with an idea for anything, i am unable to. Currently i am enrolled in an online video game design class and i have to come up with a drawing for my own game character. I cant seem to come up with anything though. I have been working on this for somewhere around 6 or 7 hours and i have nothing. I need help with how to unlock my creativity, not what to draw. If anyone has any advice on that, that would be great.  more

Resolved Question: What is the best school for 3d CGI Animation and Game Design among others?

I know it's recent after my previous question (if anyone here has seen it)... But I'm looking heavily into creating video games. I've wanted to do it since I was three. Now, Ive looked around online, and generally there's not a whole lot of information. Actually, my web searching skills just plain suck, I can type in the same thing my girlfriend does (who seems to find everything), and I wind up with an entirely different set of pages and sites thrown into my face. I have no earthly idea how she does it... But anyways, I'd like to know if anyone has any personal experience with any colleges that offer a course in Game Design specifically, but also with programming, CG animation, etc. Everything that's required to make a game, I'd like to specialize in the designing and creation part, while dabbling in everything else just enough to get my vision correct.  more

Resolved Question: How can I make this idea better?

I'm working on the design for a video game. I'm in very early stages of development and still need to perfect the setting, which is really the basis for the entire game. Let me elaborate: This game takes place thousands of years in the future, and the world has progressed remarkably into a generally perfect society. There are 6 cities (I have yet come up with the names) each represented by a colour: red, blue, yellow, green, purple, orange. These are the only cities on the entire earth, and everyone on earth lives in one of these 6 cities. The population of the earth is only about 6 million. Because technology has progressed to such lengths, people don't need to work in the traditional sense, and instead fill their time with pursuits such as art, music, sports, or writing (to name a few examples). The cities compete with each other in different sports, and represent their city with the art, music, or literature that they produce for the entire world to enjoy. My idea is to make the entire game online, either on a console or PC. I have many other ideas too add to this, but I want to smooth the edges before I put it to my producer. Now I want some input from you guys so that I can make it more user friendly and enjoyable. I know there are a lot of games that are missing important input from all of you. If you could answer these questions, and then add any other ideas you might have, I could really hit the nail on the head. Where should I put the 6 cities? What sports should I include? What names should I give the cities? What features should the game support? What would you like to see done? Much appreciated. Verist.  more

Resolved Question: ADHD... I think I may have it... is it such a bad thing?

http://counsellingresource.com/quizzes/adhd/result2.html?70 Online quiz I did... whilst I do not have much faith in online quizes, there is always some truth there no matter how large or small. I've read up on ADHD a bit recently and I do own alot of the symptoms... which I've previously called characteristics of mine, lol, and gave myself logical reasons for them... this was before I was aware of ADHD btw! The question is... is it something that really needs to be treated? I mean... yes I am "random", "wild", "scatter brained" (I called it creative), lack of self control blurting out the truth (I told myself I hate liars and I do actually have a reason for this one) I'm always jumping from one subject to another... I'm like a kid in many aspects, always asking questions and always changing my mind and reading half of a book and then getting bored and moving onto something else, I have Hyperfocus with such things are drawing and art and video games... and many other symptoms/traits of ADHD... I know about all personal growth stuff and pyschology and what not, and I know about habits and paridigms... but when I try to apply them, so the new designed habits are habits... I end up falling off the wagon after a couple of days and then I've got to start again the next day, and it's a never ending circle, but I always pick myself back up and try try try again and through some crazy miracle I get what I'm after, but it is through an accumulation of continuous trying over time, than intergrating new habits. I can find negative and positive experiences with my characteristics/symptoms... so is ADHD really something that needs to be treated? I have OCD already, which I've improved myself, so a mixutre of this and ADHD makes me an interesting character :P So if I do have ADHD is it something that I need to get "sorted" ie, will it benefit me much? Thanks in advance.  more

Resolved Question: Looking for a budget video card?

There was some confusion the last time I posted this question so I'll clarify: I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop with graphics provided by the integrated Intel GMA 3100. My OS is Windows 7 with the latest service pack. I'm looking for a 256Mb or better PCI-X card that supports Pixel Shader 3.0 and Vertex Shader 3.0. I'd like a card designed for gaming. My library is fairly dated: Eve Online, Supreme Commander and its expansion and Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 are at the upper end of my collection. That being said, I'd like to be a ble to run them (not able to currently), with respectable frame rates and the more advanced options turned on. This would be a lot easier if I wasn't on a budget of roughly USD $130. Any specific suggestions are welcome.  more

Voting Question: looking for gaming laptop help!?

I'm looking to buy a top notch gaming laptop. I'm currently on a Dell Inspiron 1520 and between my school work, video games and other things there simply isn't enough room. So i want a PC that can focus solely on my gaming life. But i don't know anything about what makes a laptop a gaming laptop like memory speed and all that. So could anyone tell me the best possible set up i should get or at least give me a general idea on what i need to look for when i buy a gaming laptop? Here are some details: The safe zone for price is under $2500. $3000 is definitely pushing it and anything over that just may be too much. This is a gift for my birthday that my parents want to get me so lets not go too overboard. Games that will be played on it: World of Warcraft, Warcraft I-III, Starcraft plus expansion, Starcraft 2 (when it comes out), Star Trek Online, and possibly Spore. I have no idea how much space each of these games take up but I'm sure its a ton. I like sweet designs. Any color with black (except pink and purple) would be killer. Any help you guys can give will be greatly appreciated, and thank you.  more

Resolved Question: I need help with the hidden blade/costume from AC1&2,please?

So i'm late with the whole assassin's creed thing because I didn't have the money or the time to play video games. Since I just started playing the games about a month ago I fell in love with the whole story and I want to be Ezio for Halloween. I was wondering if anyone can help me with designs for the black Ezio costume (altair's armor) and the hidden blades. I was going to buy the replicas online but they don't ship to CA and I really want them. Can anyone help me find a place that ships it to CA or knows how to make one that looks close to either Altair's blade or Ezio's? Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: For Video Game Industry Insiders: What are the best Colleges/Universities in the US for Video Game Design?

I want to continue my education in the Video Game Design field. I've tried the online schooling through DeVry University and I feel that it's a rip-off; I'm not learning anything and paying a whole lot for it. So My wife just got her Nursing License and I need to make a decision where in the country we want to move. I know that the majority of Video Game companies are headquartered in California, so if I want to get an internship while in school, my best opportunity probably lies out west. So, my question is this: What college/university should I attend? and, along with that: Where should I live? Cost of living is a factor of course, but my family and I will get by one way or another. Of somewhat larger concern is the quality of primary education for my 4-year old son. Still, the primary (and only real) concern is what university I should attend for the next few years to get my degree and internships. So, who is knowledgeable about this? Anyone in the Game Design industry out there can lend some qualified opinions?  more

Resolved Question: How can I make an MMORPG? (Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game)?

Hey my name's Sidney. I'm a freshman in college and I'm a computer science major. Since the age of about 14 I've been really passionate about becoming a video game designer, I have tons and tons of ideas that I try to bring to life in even the simplest ways, through art, flash, simple stuff so far. My parents have always been against it, but Game design is something I really wanna commit too. So I want to start early by creating something I can manage, even if it's over the course of one or two years. I want to make a website and establish an MMO while mostly ignoring making a profit, its mostly so I can get experience and try something practical for once. I've got some basic knowledge of C++ and actionscript, and I want to try my hand at making an MMO. So I'd like to ask how I should go about doing it, I'm mostly concerned about networking and making servers so that people can actually play, and I wanna make it free. So I'd like to ask for advice. Any and all help is appreciated =]  more

Resolved Question: considering going to mac. questions...?

I used to use the old Macs when I was little, (these were the early to mid 90s models) but started over to PCs when I got to my preteen years. Up until recently, I always regarded Macs as a system with untapped potential, but at the same time, nothing but designer computers or computers for those in graphics design. After hearing my Cross Country coach talk about the things you can do with a mac, and having a go on my uncle's Imac, I'm considering getting an IMac of my own for when I go off to college. However, on my current machine, I like to game (MW2, L4D2, COD4) as well as do my school work. Macs seem like a good option because of their stability, bootcamp, ease of use, (and their sexy looks ) but after doing a bit of research, I'm left with some questions. First off, I've always heard that even with bootcamp, the Macs can never run games in their full glory. However, these videos that I found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFBuZIOz0Wk (L4D2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwy7qcv1-IQ (MW2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1uf0fswD_k (Maybe, you can't see the screen) say otherwise. Unless the videos are BS, the games look nice and run quite well. I'm not the kind of person that has to have the sharpest graphics on the block, but I like to have a nice looking (and well-running) game. One question I have is(can't confirm it really with the last video) could I be able to play online with other PC players with bootcamped windows on an IMac? Also, while I'm aware that Imacs are not really upgradable, and Mac Pros are, I can't really justify their cost when I can do what I want with a good Imac. My question is, is the equipment in an Imac good enough to last me a few years with the upcoming games, so that I can buy a new computer when the time comes? Also, I've always heard that Macs have a good resale value. Considering that my mac is in good condition, would I be able to get a good price for a used Imac, helping out the cost with a new mac? Thanks for your help!  more

Resolved Question: What are these Apple laptop hardware options? Can someone explain?

I'm going to buy myself a Macbook Pro from a reputable website store online. I am getting it because I want to use it for my Graphic Design course needs (Adobe apps, video stuff, and possibly hard drive space for gaming as well, if it doesn't affect my laptop's performance) I'm going through my options for the laptop and there are some things/terms I don't understand - can someone please explain each one - what they are and what they can be used for, so I can make an informed choice whether to add them or not? -DisplayPort to DVI -DisplayPort to VGA -500Gb SATA drive upgradeable to 500Gb 7200rpm or 256Gb Solid State Disk (SSD) - are these upgrades worth it? Will I need them? -4Gb RAM is pretty good, right? I ended up hating my PC because it always pestered me about running out of RAM (and that was just having Photoshop open with Illustrator or InDesign, most of the time! Ridiculous.) - iWork09, or Office 2008 Home Edition for Mac? Is there a difference (aside from iWork being cheaper), or is iWork essentially the same/compatible with Office?  more

Resolved Question: Website Design Help -- Need, an experienced web designer's input/assistance.?

Picture of described website: http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/xx52/Twistedblack10/Ascensionwebsitelayout.jpg I'm working with a web designer to create a website for (the following information is totally irrelevant but I'm sharing it with you anyway) a guild called Ascension for the upcoming video game Final Fantasy XIV: Online He is experienced in "client side" scripting but is new to "server side" scripting. Since I only design the graphics, I have no idea what he's talking about. Anyway, I digress. The point is, I want to help him in the process. I'm wondering if I can just put a link on the 7-day calendar on the main page that will bring the user to a full view rather than taking up a spot on the navigation bar. FAQ - Self Explanatory. Recruitment/Enlist - Goes to a page that tells about our recruitment policy as well as an application page. What do you think? IRC - Again, will only be available to members with given access. So, thank you for those of you who actually took the time to read this, any help at all will be MUCH appreciated. For those of you seeking a reward, I have no problem adding your name to the finished product as well as a link to your services for your guidance. Again, thank you all. -Arcano P.S. Maximum of $1000 with taxes included. Less is always better, and on Boxing Day it should be reasonably less. 2) What size notebook would you prefer? 15" - 16" is fine. I'm not really too particular. 3) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in. Canada 4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like? I'm not picky. As long as it generally has good reviews. 5) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook? Gaming (so a dedicated video card is nice. It would be cool to be able to play games like Left For Dead 2, but that's hard to find for under $1000 I think), MS Word, Streaming 6) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk? Occasionally, but that's not a big deal. 7) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games? Left For Dead 2, Warcraft 3, newer games if possible 8) How many hours of battery life do you need? Minimal; this is not that important to me. 9) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person? I buy online often. 10) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista), Mac OS, Linux, etc. Windows 7 preferred ! Screen Specifics: 11) Would you prefer standard or widescreen? Widescreen 12) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer? Higher resolution is better, right? Widescreen preferred 13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? Matte/non-glossy preferred, but it doesn't really matter. Build Quality and Design: 14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you? No 15) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last? During boxing day sales, and it should last for 3 years minimum Notebook Components 16) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 200GB? More is better 17) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drive? DVD burner Please state any additional features you need. It's also helpful if you can indicate how experienced you are with computers. If you're a novice and don't know how to answer some questions just say so! 2 gb would be nice, but I can upgrade later if itcosts too much to include it. RAM is often cheaper when you pout it in yourself ! I know more than most of my friends about computers, and know most of the lingo, but can't be considered a guru. I have built a few desktop pcs in the past. Thanks again! I am looking forward to the recommendations! Happy Holidays, eh!  more

Resolved Question: What steps should i take to become a video game designer?

I've always loved video games and i wanted to pursue a career with games. But I don't know if I should be a programmer or designer. I'm not really good at drawing things but i have good ideas for the level design and control scheme and that such. I'm decent with computers, my dad used to teach an online class for computer programming and i caught on a little. But I don't know which one to pursue, I'm leaning more to the designer side but i'm not really artistic. I can think of something but i can't execute it. I'm still in school btw, is there any classes that i should take for this?  more

Resolved Question: How to start online-based video game project?

I'm trying to start a gaming project. I have a full game design and plan for how the game shall operate, though I will need a staff of programmers, artists, sound engineers, etc. to make it a reality. In order to get a staff good enough to do this, I will of course need to have a website with a forum board and some ways to attract potential staff members. Unfortunately, I have no experience in web development or graphic design so building an attractive website to get this project moving is going to be difficult... Can someone please describe how I should go about getting this website set up and how I should advertise for it?  more
