1. Each year, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) rates a nation’s development according to the Human Development Index (HDI). The HDI measures the human development in a country based on certain factors. Which is a factor the index uses? (Points: 3) birth rate education gross national income assessable tax base 2. Economic experts use certain measures, such as GNP and GDP to divide the world into two groups—developed nations and developing nations. Which is not a characteristic of a developing nation? (Points: 3) low income attempting to improve the lives of its citizens high literacy rate inconsistent economic development How do lack of education, high national debt, and trade barriers affect developing nations? (Points: 3) They reduce the workforce and encourage foreign investment. They create the basis for poverty. They make it impossible for democracy to prevail. They force the government to impose high taxes on everyone. 6. People have many different reasons for packing up and leaving an area where they have spent their entire life. Why would the vice president of an American tent manufacturing company be concerned about the shortage of skilled labor in India? (Points: 3) India is the only nation in Southeast Asia that provides textiles to American companies. Global interdependence means that a problem in one nation’s economy can affect other economies. Trade agreements restrict the United States from trading in textiles with non-Asian countries. Global interdependence results in trade agreements that favor countries that have command economies. 12. What best describes the effect of increased globalization on the environment? (Points: 3) It has negatively affected the environment, forcing the international community to work toward solutions. It has positively affected the environment because more nations are now aware of the problems. Increased globalization has had little, if any, effect on the environment. Resolved Question: What do you think of my Mock Draft (rate it)?

1. Rams – Ndamukong Suh, DT Nebraska – Arguably the best defensive player in the history of college football. Unfortunately, this is the last time you hear his name as he falls into the inglorious black hole of mediocrity known as St. Louis. Other than that, I love the team. 2. Lions – Dez Bryant, WR Oklahoma State – After realizing that bad publicity is better than no publicity, the Lions revert to the Matt Millen Era of drafting 4 receivers in 5 years. Meanwhile Detroit fans wonder why they aren’t Browns fans. Oh yeah. Nevermind. 3. Bucs – Gerald McCoy, DT Oklahoma – I have nothing bad to say about the guy. Mainly because he is right behind me and can easily beat me up, or at the very least pay someone to do it for him. Does that work for ya, Gerald? Good. 4. Redskins – Jimmy Clausen, QB Notre Dame – Danny Boy continues Washington’s string of drafting bad quarterbacks in the first round. Welcome to an elite fraternity, Jimmy. Somehow I don’t think Heath Shuler, Patrick Ramsey, and Jason Campbell are sipping champagne on his behalf. 5. Chiefs – Eric Berry, S Tennessee – He is considered the best safety since Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu. Unfortunately, the Chiefs still finish the season 4-12. 6. Seahawks – Sam Bradford, QB Oklahoma – The Seahawks exchange a 35-year old quarterback with a quarterback that has shoulders of a 35-year old. How could that possibly fail? 7. Browns – Russell Okung, OT Oklahoma State – Since I’m relatively positive that no one actually cares about this pick, I’m going to use this time to say that I’m pretty sure Bernie from “Weekend at Bernie’s” works out at my gym. Seriously. Dead likeness. Sorry, I had to tell someone. 8. Raiders – Drew Butler, P Georgia – After reading a blog on the internet, Al Davis is convinced that field position is the ultimate factor into winning in the NFL. Who better to do that than this past year’s Ray Guy Award winner? Ray Guy…former Raiders punter. Butler…the Ray Guy Award winner. Coincidence? Of course not. 9. Bills – Anthony Davis, OT Rutgers – Confession #1: I have no idea who Anthony Davis is. Confession #2: I had no idea the city of Buffalo still had a football team. My soul is now cleansed. Okay then…moving on… 10. Broncos (from Chicago Bears) – Rolando McClain, LB Alabama – This pick was acquired in the trade that sent Jay Cutler to Chicago for Kyle Orton. Let’s be honest. A bag of Cheetos would be a better pick here than keeping Cutler, so anything more and you’ve scored gold. The Broncos, as expected, don’t go with the bag of chips and draft the best linebacker in college football last year instead. 11. Jaguars – Tim Tebow, QB Florida – This is solely a pick to help sell tickets. I mean, after all, the city of Jacksonville couldn’t even sell out the Super Bowl. No word if Planned Parenthood is editing an anti-Tebow video for their website. Meanwhile, head coach Jack Del Rio wonders why he didn’t take the USC coaching job. One word, Jack: Probation. 12. Dolphins – Dan LeFevour, QB Central Michigan – Bill Parcells decides to build an offense around the rare Triple Wildcat formation all while gaining the impressive distinction of using a high draft pick on a QB in 4 consecutive years. Miami still finishes 8-8 and misses the playoffs. 13. 49ers – Joe Haden, CB Florida. Does anyone else miss the Niners’ glory days of Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Roger Craig, Steve Young...I really could go on forever…Ken Norton, Dwight Clark, John Taylor, Eric Davis, Merton Hanks…? 14. Seahawks – Joe McKnight, RB USC – Not realizing he is no longer a college coach, Pete Carroll gets in a recruiting war with LSU over the services of Joe McKnight. Carroll’s mistake is McKnight’s gain as he gets a lucrative deal worth millions more than what he deserves. Far less than what he made at USC. 15. Giants – C.J. Spiller, RB Clemson – Carroll’s mistake is New York’s gain as they draft the most electrifying running back in college football. No need to fear, Pete. Tom Coughlin will sap the fun out of his game by the preseason. 16. 49ers – Bryan Bulaga, OT Iowa – Don’t be surprised to see the 49ers trade this pick to the Saints for overpaid Reggie Bush, making it the Gore-Bush backfield. Sadly, this joke came 10 years too late. Better late than never. 17. Titans – Everson Griffen, DE USC – Owner Bud Adams makes the bold claim of “All we need is another weapon for Vince Young and we will win the Super Bowl.” He then flips off the fans and drafts a defensive end. Makes sense to me. 18. Steelers – Brian Price, DT UCLA – Word on the street is Price is the best UCLA Bruin since Cade McNown. Oh dear Lord! 19. Falcons – Earl Thomas, S Texas – Some experts think he could make the Pro Bowl as a rookie. Let me see, Justin Smith: Pro Bowler. Terence Newman: Pro Bowler. David Garrard: Pro Bowler. Quintell Mickell: Pro Bowler. are people in this section that stupid? This question is an attempt at humour, but I guess some people just dont see it.  more

Resolved Question: the new Health care plan is a good thing!!!!!! ugh. CONSERVATIVES - only thinking of yourselves.?

now, i have heard a LOT of conservatives speaking barbarically about this plan - and everything this plan says it will do EVENTUALLY in the future. PLEASE give me your opinions about what this says. I copied these from the whitehouse.gov site. http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/health-care Q: Can I get insurance if I have a pre-existing condition? A: Yes. •One of the most important aspects of this reform is to finally end the practice of insurance companies denying you coverage based on your health status. •Soon after the law is enacted, insurance companies will no longer be allowed to deny coverage to children with pre-existing conditions. Uninsured adults with pre-existing conditions will have access to a high-risk pool. And once the insurance exchange marketplace is up and running, insurance companies will no longer be allowed to deny coverage to anyone based on their health status. Q: Am I going to be forced into a government plan? A: No. •You will be able to shop among private insurance plans that will be sold in the insurance exchange---a marketplace where you can choose what is right for you and where members of Congress will also buy their insurance. Today many markets are dominated by one or two insurance companies. That will change, and you will have many more affordable choices than you have today. Q: Will the government decide what treatment I can get? A: No. •Treatment decisions will be made by your doctor and you, just as they are today. The government will not interfere with your relationship with your doctor. Q: Can I afford coverage? A: Clearly, the system we have today is broken. If you don’t have health coverage, there’s no limit on how much insurance companies can charge you, and they can decide to refuse to sell you a policy at their whim. Health insurance reform will change all of that. •For the first time in history, there will be limits on how much anyone will have to pay to receive health care coverage. And depending upon your income, you may be among the tens of millions of Americans who will get a tax credit to to help pay for your coverage. •And for the first time in history, insurance companies will no longer be allowed to simply tell you “no”. They will be required to offer coverage regardless of your health status, and they cannot jack up rates or drop you from your coverage when you get sick. Do these answers solve all your problems with the bill? What has Obama done that his predecessors had not done to distinguish him as socialist? Since the founding of USA, pooled resources for example military, education, government, public roads, etc were set up for the benefits of the society. Were none of these socialist in nature? Correcting wealth disparity gaps is underkten by every nations in the world through methods such as progressive taxation. Over a long term, if a nation's 1% wealthiest owns 95% of the country's wealth, it may lead to instability, anarchy and to people's revolution. When the country's financial and banking system were on the verge of collapse, difficult decisions had to be made. What would be the repercussions of letting some of those institutions to fail? Would it lead to total credit seizure? The risk taken to bailout those institutions would be to gage the viability of these institutions recovering and to be able to support the credit/financial infrastructure in the recovery process. On hindsight, the decis the decisions were right. Was it purely for takeover of the financial industries? We know the answer. What about other bailouts? 10% of the USA economy is from the automotive industry. By letting the automotive industry to go bust, its multiplier effect would be much worse, and the whole economy would not be positive today. The cash for clunkers was an additional programs to inject demand, while its other positive effects are greener environment and less dependent on fossil fuels (due to more efficient mileage per gallon). Health care costs is a concern for every civic minded politicians who care about the escalating costs: health care premiums doubled from 2000 to 2008 and is expected to double again within the next decade. It eats up 1/6 of the current GDP. This monster, if not reigned in in time, will break the economy. Hence, someone has to do the dirty job. This will help those in the lower class to have health care insurance, though the benefits (of lower costs overall) to the majority of the middle class will be felt years down the road. Does Obama care about the middle class? Last year, $283 billion bill was signed by Obama for tax cuts. This translates to several thousand dollars of tax credits for the middle class. What is exception and daring was that he did it during recession. If any, opposition should come from the richest 5% of the population. But why do so many ordinary Americans oppose a President who works for the middle class Americans?  more

Resolved Question: Americans, do these answer your problems with the bill?

I copied these from the whitehouse.gov site. Q: Can I get insurance if I have a pre-existing condition? They will be required to offer coverage regardless of your health status, and they cannot jack up rates or drop you from your coverage when you get sick.  more

Resolved Question: 3 US history questions?

16. What was the ultimate impact of U.S. participation in World War I on Germany and its allies? Germany became more determined than ever, causing an increase in the death rate. U.S. participation caused a rift between Britain and France that extended the war. Germany's allies abandoned it once the United States committed to war. American forces ended the stalemate on the western front leading to Germany's defeat. 17. What impact did U.S. entry into World War I have on labor and production? There was a serious labor shortage that was difficult to fill. The civilian population was unable to keep up with the supply needs of the military. With men drafted to serve in the military, jobs opened for women and minorities. Farming and agriculture fell short of meeting the food requirements of the military. 18. What did the federal government do to generate support for America's role in World War I? formed the Committee on Public Information to create propaganda about the war sold savings bonds to remind Americans to be patriotic about the war effort provided tax rebates in exchange for military enlistments established a special agency within the Department of Defense to respond to questions  more

Resolved Question: Please help with history work?

I'm supposed to fill in the blanks with the answers, problem is I don't know the answers. So if you could give me a source that might have them or if you could fill in a few of the blanks yourself I would greatly appreciate it. Petition of Right Once upon a time, there was a king named ____________________. He was unpopular because he opposed ______________________ (religious group), married a _____________________, and dissolved Parliament when they didn’t give him enough money to fight the War of _____________________________ against Spain and France. He also did two things that really annoyed English citizens – he forced them to give him __________________ and forced them to house and feed ___________________. Finally, Parliament made ________________________ sign the ____________________________ in exchange for additional tax money. This document limited the king’s power in four ways. They are: 1.______________________________________________________________________________ 2.______________________________________________________________________________ 3.______________________________________________________________________________ 4.______________________________________________________________________________ The funny thing is that this didn’t ________________ English monarchy, as you’d suspect. The king ignored the __________________________ and dissolved Parliament for _____________ years! He continued to collect taxes, imprison opponents, and persecute _______________________. He even tried to drive Calvinists out of Scotland. The End. The English Civil War Once upon a time, the Scots invaded England. _________________ called Parliament into session but sent them home after three weeks. This was known as the ________________ Parliament. This king was desperate for money, though, so he called them back into session. This time, the ______________ Parliament met for nearly 20 years. It was controlled by ____________________ (religious group), all of whom opposed Charles’ rule. Even though a small coalition of pro-monarchy royalists had formed, Parliament sent Charles a document called the _________________________________. This document said that _________________________________________. Charles said, “no way!” and this led to war. On one side were Charles’ supporters, known as _________________________ or _________________________. On the other side were supporters of Parliament, known as _____________________________ because of their _______________________________. __________________________________ led the winning side, the ___________________________. Charles’ armies surrendered in 1646, and Charles I was _________________________! Shocking! Puritans removed all remaining opposition from Parliament, leaving behind the _________________ Parliament. This Parliament ended monarchy in England and created a __________________________, headed by ______________________________. This form of government wasn’t effective, however, and in 1660, Parliament restored _____________________ under King ______________________. This king learned from his father’s mistakes, and the days of absolute power in England were over. At least for a while. The End. The Glorious Revolution Once upon a time, Charles II ____________ and _______________ became king. This king was a _____________________ (religion), something that most Brits weren’t too happy about. People blamed _______________________ for the plague, which struck England one last time in 1665 and for a huge fire that burned down most of the city of London. But I digress. Those who wanted to exclude ____________________ from the throne became known as ________________________, while those who defended hereditary monarchy were called __________________. At any rate, this man became king; people became especially antsy when he made it known that he wanted absolute power. He also started appointing __________________ (religion) people to government and university positions! Most people were just waiting for the king to die so that the throne would pass to ______________, a ________________________ (religion). However, when the king had a son, ___________________ and ___________________ united against the king and invited Mary’s husband, _______________ to invade England and take the crown. ____________________ high-tailed it to France and ________________________ and _____________________ took over without a single battle or drop of blood shed – hence, the ________________________ Revolution. These two learned, just as Charles II had, that ______________________ wasn’t going to fly in England. The End. For later. Resolved Question: What is the exchange rate in Somalia? - wanting to take my young son (6) to meet some "real" pirates?

Last year we did a safari, the year before we skied. Pirates are my son's main passion at the moment. I am looking for a family trip to really get a sense of the "swashbuckling" bravado of the "knights of the high seas". It seems in the news that pirates are most likely to be found in Somalia at this point in history so I thought we would go there. I'm not excatly sure where to go to to book a trip. Thomas Cook said they didn't go to that destination as did several other places. Does any one have any advice on how to pursue my travel plans, or indeed know any destinations where modern day pirates are more easily seen. Cheers  more

Resolved Question: Husband has secret pages where he talks to beautiful women?

About 4 years ago my husband joined a dating service. He never hooked up with anyone. However there was a lot of flirting going on. Nothing x-rated. Just flirting. When I found out I was hurt. He actually met someone on there and exchanged numbers (work). When she wanted to come visit him it was then that he said he was married. I found out about this site because of a credit card transaction on a secret credit card. That was another issue. That fell in my lap. I wasn't looking for anything. Since then I have had trust issues with him. Shorty after that I found out he was telling his ex that he missed her and still had love in his heart for her. He told her he wasn't looking to rekindle anything but just let her know how he felt. We talked about it and he was going to not contact her. I found out he lied about that and was still talking to her. The conversations were basic however. I just don't like being lied to and feel I had a reason to not want him interacting with her. Since the dating service I was suspicious and would search. Since then he has joined the social networking sites like myspace and other pages. On these pages he says that he is happily married and not looking to hook up. The basic conversation of the talk is each telling the other how good they look. His argument is, he says he's happily married so it shouldn't matter. He doesn't even consider it flirting. All I know is, based on our history it doesn't make me feel to good. I feel really sad and just stupid. We have two kids ages 4 and 11 months. He wants to try for a boy but I am done unless he wants to fully respect me. I consider myself fairly attractive. I've had no trouble getting attention from other guys, but out of respect for him I don't go there. What would you all do in this instance? He helps around the house, and his good with our daughters, he comes home on time, and even helps with dinner. It's just this one aspect that I don't like. Is it a big deal? He said he wants someplace online where he can be himself. Again, he says he's married so I shouldn't worry. But I feel like he's setting himself up. I feel that I should stay in the marriage until our girls are 18 and then go. That will be 17 more years. Perhaps during that time I should just live my life and be happy inspite of him.  more

Resolved Question: Support the Affordable Health Care for America Act?

Will Republicans support the Affordable Health Care for America Act if the public option is dropped? This would include the following: prohibiting health insurers from charging different rates based on patients' medical histories or gender prohibiting health insurers from refusing coverage based on patients' medical histories repeal of the exemption for insurance companies from anti-trust laws requiring most employers to provide coverage for their workers or pay a surtax on the worker's wages up to 8% new restrictions on abortion coverage in private insurance plans (note: Medicare is already prohibited from covering abortions by law) expansion of Medicaid to 150% of the Federal Poverty Level providing a subsidy to low to middle income Americans to help buy insurance a central health insurance exchange where the public can compare policies and rates a 5.4% surtax on individuals whose adjusted gross income exceeds $500,000 ($1 million for married couples filing joint returns) a 2.5% excise tax on medical devices reductions in projected spending on Medicare by $400 billion per year inclusion of some language originally proposed in the Tax Equity for Domestic Partner and Health Plan Beneficiaries Act inclusion of language originally proposed in the Indian Health Care Improvement Act Amendments of 2009 (H.R. 2708). Without the public option, it is just massive healthcare reform overhaul. There would be no government run national program (administered by the US Department of Health and Human Services). Why wouldn't anyone with a conscience want to support this? And why do Republicans keep claiming that taxes will be raised on the middle class? Resolved Question: Is the aristocracy of yesterday the banker of today?

Can you remember your own history ? Peasants made a living off the land --- sheep -- wheat etc --- They were free for a while --- the uninvolved according to the ancient Kings and nobles - the names that were used to describe Scott's by the Roman Empire were telling of a general disgust for the wild people The warrior Queen who lost to the Romans --- Their general said they fought bravely and their women fought to -- but were no match for the killing lines of a professional army They fought as individuals Romans fought as a group The definition of a Noble --- a land owner --- The more land captured the more peasants owned the greater the food production for trade --- the more trade the better the weapons and the more people you could hire --- Hire to protect your stuff from the peasants who were owned Owned captured -- protected from other Lords and Nobles who might want to conquer them to move that Noble down a little in the ranks of nobles -- The wars of Houses ? Houses Kings --- Queen's --- a faimily of the top noble ------------------------ The bankers are paid for their services --- by absolutely everyone They control the flow of deposits --- withdrawals loans and interest rates That is one powerful owner of men --- other groups might own big huge corperations and be rich --- but their wealth is controlled by the bank --- stocks the dollar exchange the rates they pay out to investments etc etc etc Raise the price of a commodity such as oil by adjusting an interest rate -- start giving money to bad ideas bound to fail You could do anything to even the highest ranking politican --- the economy must do what the money and its worth does --- Production and the quality of life for each and everyone of us is in the hands of someone who controls our lives -- the price of food the growth of the national debt by raising a number --- 1 % interest translates into a debt expected of 100 dollars -- by raising it to 2% deficit growth doubles Are the bankers of today the aristocracy with pancake make up of yesterday The ones who said if the people can not run their affairs then we of the State will have to represent both the people and the State ? ..... and aren't the bankers doing exactly the same thing for us today ?  more

Resolved Question: Can Someone Proof Read This Paragraph For Me - 10 POINTS?

Can you please proofread this for me. I suck at grammar, thanks! * I do apologize for the length* Almost anything you know is run or made by computers, industry, cars, jets, and much more. Businesses today rely on computers to make sure everything runs smoothly in order to keep their business going. Computers help businesses in so many ways. Computers have major effects on: multimedia and communication, advertising, market information, and management software’s, translation services, exchange rates, courier or cargo tracking, and documents. All corporations keep all their data stored on a computer hard drive. If computers stop working just for a few days, kaos will take over causing the possibility of the stock market crashing. Banking system would fail causing an astronomical amount of money that will be lost. Without computers, our country would fail. Computers are the most important innovations in history, without computers the world would not be able to function in the manner today that people are accustom to. Personally, computers help me in so many ways. Going to school online is great for someone like me. School has never been great to me. Online school allows me to pursue a degree in the field I want with an accredited college online, which I find to be absolutely amazing. Computers helped the world in so many ways and help us take a large step into the future. Computers are arguably the most powerful tools we as a society have ever created.  more

Resolved Question: Mandatory Health Insurance -- works like this, yes?

Today's IBD has a reference to an article that recently appeared in the WSJ reporting the actual experience of one Massachusetts health insurance company [Harvard-Pilgrim] with the "you must buy health insurance" plan of that state for their fiscal year ended 3/31/09. According to the articles, 40% of the company's new policy holders during that year stayed with the company for less than five months. During this period, these short-term policy holders ran up average monthly costs of $2,400 -- far exceeding the premiums they paid. *** What is happening? The Massachusetts health insurance law is similar to ObamaCare. Insurance companies may not refuse to issue a policy to anyone. They must charge the same rates to everyone within specified classes, no matter previous health history or evidence of likely future medical costs. And, the penalty for not having insurance is fairly low. So, people are gaming the system. When they think they're healthy, they refuse to buy insurance and pay the "no insurance" penalty instead. But when they know they're going to need expensive medical care, they sign up, get the care, and then drop insurance. My example: If you think about it, it is a lot cheaper for a pregnant young woman to sign up for even $1000 a month health care for five months and have the insurance pay for her Ob-Gyn and baby delivery costs [something like $15,000 in MA if all goes normally] and then to drop insurance [or stop paying, which amounts to the same thing]. Example number 2: Smoker who has previously been healthy and didn't carry insurance gets the sad news that he has lung cancer. The good news is that it is at an early stage and is treatable. He hustles to get coverage -- $1,000 a month for a few months is a lot cheaper than just the $12,000 radiation therapy to say nothing of the following three months of chemotherapy at $1,000 a week plus his oncologist's consultation bills of $7,000. When he's in remission, he stops paying on the insurance -- he can always sign up later with a different insurance company if he needs more of the expensive medical treatment. Example number 3: Person who is diagnosed with an adult onset chronic condition -- type 2 diabetes, ALS, COPD, etc. S/he didn't previously carry insurance. Now they are facing medical bills in the $2,000 a month range. So they sign up for insurance at a cost of $1,000 a month -- thus passing half their chronic care costs to someone else (plus all their other covered medical costs of every description). [This person keeps the insurance until they're eligible for Medicare or Medicaid.] Naturally, the insurance companies can't make money on "customers" such as this, so they must raise rates on everyone [MA law requires rates to be fairly uniform]. The companies that do the best job of making it too hard for such "customers" to sign up have the advantage -- they'll have proportionately fewer such losing accounts and thus will have the lowest rates for regular customers. Thus, it pays for health insurance companies in MA to focus only on group insurance and to have the lowest public profile and the fewest individual accounts. *** Somehow, I don't think this is what the voters of MA thought they were getting when their state enacted universal health insurance. NOW for the critical question -- since gaming the system in this way is entirely predictable, why is ObamaCare designed to enable people to game the system? What will this accomplish in the long run? Will any insurance company participate in the "insurance exchange" at all if they know in advance that the shoppers there will include a large proportion [40% plus chronic cases in MA] of these "gaming" customers? Wouldn't it be wiser policy for the insurance companies to refuse to participate in the insurance exchange and thus refuse these "customers" so that they can keep rates lower for their existing (honest) customers? It seems to follow that either the co-ops or the public option "insurance" scheme will have to have astronomical rates [by comparison] or that the government subsidies will have to be gigantic. And, of course, as people figure out how to game the system fewer and fewer will voluntarily carry health insurance except when they know they are going to need it. Thus, the proportion of the population who are "covered" declines after the initial spurt and the health insurance companies are squeezed by a falling customer base. And as insurance companies are squeezed or suffer losses, they'll have to raise rates on group insurance -- which is already carrying about $1,000 per year per family in costs shifted by providers from the underfunded Medicare and Medicaid systems. Naturally, this makes group rates go up even faster than they were going up -- and they were already going up faster than inflation and productivity combined. What is an employer to do then? His group rates are rising faster tha  more

Resolved Question: What is the point of the UK Government's "scrappage scheme"?

From a layman's point of view its seems a bit pointless. Pretty much everyone I know, without exception, who drives an old banger does so for one of two reasons: 1) They do not have sufficient cash for buy a new car and cannot afford to take on the added expense of a monthly payment on a car finance plan/loan. 2) They do not have sufficient cash to buy a new car and have a poor credit rating (CCJs, defaults or no history) which means they cannot obtain a finance plan/loan. Hence the reason they have to make do with their battered old M Reg Fiesta etc. OK so I understand that the Government will give you £2000 or whatever for your fiesta in exchange for buying a new car. BUT that still leaves £4,000 or however much to pay for the new one. Which leaves exactly the same problem - you either need the cash or you need a finance plan to pay the remainder. Making it unaffordable for many and impossible for those with poor credit. So who exactly is this scheme supposed to help? Other than the wealthy pensioner who's hung onto his old Rover through sentimental reasons perhaps? Or someone who's just come into a lot of cash after Granny died? Or am I missing the point here? Because I can't see how it will make any impact on the environment at all . . . Plus, during a recession when many peoples' jobs are insecure, encouraging people to get into debt to buy a new car is really irresponsible. Sherlock - wow you're full of snobbish judgements aren't you? Just out of interest, how do you know that people who are on low incomes or with poor credit are automatically "irreponsible" with their finances? Has it not crossed your mind that there is a recession on and job loss and wage cuts have left many living on a reduced income and struggling financially? Probably not, that would take intelligence to work out . . . Oh and if you couldn't "afford" a new car before, knocking a couple of grand off the cost of a car which costs £15,000 isn't going to make it any more "affordable" is it? Sinple maths. The only people who have used this scheme is those who were planning to replace their cars anyway.  more

Resolved Question: Myanmar Travel, Cash, Customs, Currency??Etc. Etc.?

I will be on extended stay for business/pleasure in Yangon and possibly Mandalay. I know about Myanmar's peculiar history and culture, and am currently practicing language (I am a fast learner but it is a tricky one!!!). Ok so my specific question is as follows: I have a lump sum of money tens of thousands of dollars. I will be in and out of Myanmar for a number of years.... mostly in from what I understand. I want at least 15,000 U.S. dollars with me in the country minimum. I also want the rest of my money closely accessible. I understand that it is considered RELATIVELY safe to carry cash around and IN Myanmar. But what about the following: How can I effectively declare this money when leaving the U.S. in cash (i.e. in excess of 10,000) do I need pay check stubs receipts etc. etc.? How about going through customs in Myanmar? I know the country is relatively peaceful towards tourists but what about customs agents do they seize foreign money in excess of certain amounts, and/or tax you excessively? For some reason I feel it is less suspect and easier to move if I bring the bulk of my cash in Chinese Yuan rather than U.S Dollars, but a worse exchange rate is this true? Also what are my options for retrieving cash in Myanmar? I think there are only two or three hotels in Yangoon that will provide you cash based on a credit card. Does this mean you cannot directly access a U.S./foreign bank anywhere in Myanmar without paying at least 10% and holding a credit card (I do not own a credit card)? I know it seems like I answered my own question, but really I am interested in foreign bank accounts. For example can I access a Chinese, Thai, or Swiss bank account in Myanmar? I am also very interested in bringing large quantities of personal effects to Myanmar. So for example I smoke cigars, drink tea, and eat chocolate and coffee. I would rather purchase those goods in bulk here and bring them to Myanmar. I also use mild health products that could be difficult to find in Myanmar or very expensive. Such as foot callous cushions, sleeping pills, arch supports.. Etc. Etc. normal over the counter stuff. As well as contact lenses and glasses (both prescription). I know they restrict/tax excess of 50-100 cigars, and a kilo of organic products. Where can I find specific information on penalties/tariffs for entering the country with a few thousand grams of tea, a few thousand grams of dark chocolate, health supplies in bulk over the counter and prescription etc. etc. ? I know this is a huge laundry list of extensive questions few probably have the answers to, but the most specific and most information I can receive the more thankful and grateful I am. Also as aside note I am wondering about anti-malarial medications is it difficult to bring in more than a one year supply?? To recap I am staying extended. I know I will need to leave regularly to neighboring countries for visa updates etc. But have many items especially financial instruments that I want to bring direct from U.S. to Myanmar I need specific answers or a reference to where I can find specific answers about how much I can accomplish. Also as a side note I have studied extensively about the history, culture, military regime. My move is economic and cultural it has NOTHING to do with politics. I have no interests in the politics to me it is an unrelated, unfortunate circumstance of history that only the people of Myanmar must deal with. I know about the phone taps, internet monitoring, and lack of electricity in many regions. I don't need answers and comments about this. I plan on staying only in areas where foreigners are allowed and plan on following to the best of my ability every law that the acting governing body of Myanmar sets forward. Resolved Question: You claim government backed health insurance is not a takeover?

Please explain this away: http://money.cnn.com/2009/07/24/news/economy/health_care_reform_obama.fortune/index.htm?postversion=2009072410 1. the feds can mandate what is in your private insurance package The bills in both houses require that Americans purchase insurance through "qualified" plans offered by health-care "exchanges" that would be set up in each state. The rub is that the plans can't really compete based on what they offer. The reason: The federal government will impose a minimum list of benefits that each plan is required to offer. 2. no more discounts for clean living Under the Senate plan, insurers would be barred from charging any more than twice as much for one patient vs. any other patient with the same coverage. So if a 20-year-old who costs just $800 a year to insure is forced to pay $2,500, a 62-year-old who costs $7,500 would pay no more than $5,000. Second, the bills would ban insurers from charging differing premiums based on the health of their customers. Again, that's understandable for folks with diabetes or cancer. But the bills would bar rewarding people who pursue a healthy lifestyle of exercise or a cholesterol-conscious diet. That's hardly a formula for lower costs. It's as if car insurers had to charge the same rates to safe drivers as to chronic speeders with a history of accidents. 3.the bill eliminates HSA accounts The bills seriously endanger the trend toward consumer-driven care in general. By requiring minimum packages, they would prevent patients from choosing stripped-down plans that cover only major medical expenses. "The government could set extremely low deductibles that would eliminate HSAs," says John Goodman of the National Center for Policy Analysis, a free-market research group. "And they could do it after the bills are passed." 4. you can keep your existing health plan, it's a lie folks. The employees who got their coverage before the law goes into effect can keep their plans, but once again, there's a catch. If the plan changes in any way -- by altering co-pays, deductibles, or even switching coverage for this or that drug -- the employee must drop out and shop through the exchange. Since these plans generally change their policies every year, it's likely that millions of employees will lose their plans in 12 months. 5. free to keep your doctors... The Senate bill requires that Americans buying through the exchanges -- and as we've seen, that will soon be most Americans -- must get their care through something called "medical home." Medical home is similar to an HMO. You're assigned a primary care doctor, and the doctor controls your access to specialists. The primary care physicians will decide which services, like MRIs and other diagnostic scans, are best for you, and will decide when you really need to see a cardiologists or orthopedists. CNN is my source, not FOX or FAUX or whatever you like to call it. Let the contortions begin! This is a 1000 page bill, so no, I have not read it. But noone voting on it or desparate to sign it has read it either I dare say. How can you trust a 1000 pages of legalese to be in your best interest?  more

Resolved Question: Some questions on 'Palestine'.?

I would like to know: 1. When was the country of 'Palestine' founded, and by whom? 2. What were its borders? 3. What was its capital, and major cities? 4. Name at least one 'Palestinian' leader before Arafat. 5. What was the language of the 'Country of Palestine'? 6. What was the prevalent religion of the 'Ancient Country of Palestine'? 7. What was the name of its currency? 8. Choose any date from history, and tell me what the exchange rate of the 'Palestinian' monetary unit against any major currency of the time - drachma, denarii, pound, dollar, livre, yuan, yen or any other. 9. Since there is no country of 'Palestine' today, what caused its demise, and when did it occur? 10. Why did the 'Palestinians' never try to become a state until after the devastating defeat of the invading arab states in the 1967 'Six Day War'? I just want to know the answers, so no snide comments please. Look, I just want the answers to these questions! I don't want to know your prejudice, I don't want to know about Israel, I don't want anything other than the answers to these questions. No false links, no opinion of right or wrong, just the plain unvarnished facts. Clue: Answer 1. . . . . . . Answer2 . . . . . .. etc, etc, etc. Is it too much to ask a question on Y!A and expect an answer? I'm not interested in re-named roman provinces, or Ottoman provinces, or even League of nations mandate territories, I want to know when 'Palestine' was a state. Hampshire is on a map, it doesn't make it a nation, nor show that it ever was. Please, somebody, answer the questions. I have read widely, history, politics and economics. I can find no record of the existence of a state, ancient or modern, called Palestine. I find no history, no people, no state, nothing at all prior to 1967 and Arafat declaring a 'Palestinian People'. That is why, I would like to know if anybody has evidence to answer the above questions.  more

Resolved Question: Help! Is he abusive? Warning - disturbing story?

Hey everyone, I am looking to find out what people think about this man. 1) Is he abusive? 2) What can I say to my friend so she leaves him? ------------------------------------------------------------------------- He's been with a friend of mine for a few years now and I've heard some very disturbing things about his behavior. A little bit of a recap about the past. He has been known to post personal ads on the net while in a relationship, and it seems he has never felt guilt or remorse. He rather became very hostile when confronted. I've read some of the emails that he and my friend exchanged regarding that particular situation and they went something like this: My friend: What did I do to you? I've done nothing but love you with all my heart. Can you just tell me what is happening?? Guy: Shut up ... you're annoying. Don't you have better things to do than go through my business? I f*cked a lot of people behind your back. Are you happy now? Childish sh*t. My friend: How am I childish? You're cheating on me! Why are you doing this?? Guy: "Why oh why" boo hoo hoo. You need medication. I f*cked a lot of people who I liked more. Now leave me alone. Let me add that my friend was at that point helping him out financially! (They weren't sharing a house or anything, she just gave him money because he kept saying he needed it). And let me also add that while this guy is complaining about my friend looking him up online, he around that time had my friend's pasword and was checking her emails ! He finally deleted the obvious personal ads but then he joined myspace so that didn't help much. You guessed it, he started pretending to be single on myspace! Going as far as outright denying ever meeting my friend, let alone being her boyfriend. And again, no remorse. Keeps repeating that my friend is crazy. Outside of the complete withdrawal of affection, approval or anything that could serve to make my friend feel loved in the slightest sense of the word, there were few "extreme" episodes for a while. Fast forward to today. He showed up at my friend's in a terrible mood, and though it is normal for him not to greet or acknowledge her family's presense when entering her house, he was particularly aggressive, then said he was going to check his emails and proceeded to sit on her computer. I forgot to mention that he had a history of chatting with women USING my friend's computer (which is how she realized he was on personals' sites back then). Therefore and given that history, she prefers not to let him use her computer (unless it's a matter of life or death, but what are the odds of that happening?) At any rate, he was asked to please get out of the computer, especially in view of the attitude he was displaying. He was obviously extremely annoyed but it couldn't have have had its origin in her as he had only been there one minute. Since he was not geting up she decides to turn her computer off from the power button. But when she kneels to reach it, he starts wrestling her! She tries to stay calm and tells him why she does not want him in the computer. He keeps on ranting but she finally turns it off and he starts whining that he needs to reply to a work related email and she feels sorry for him enough to turn it back on. He checks his emails (facebook related), then continues on to other websites. My friend tells him that now that he's done with emails he can get up and, in view of his past history, asks him about his relationship status on Facebook ... that's when then starts swearing at her! At that point she turns the computer off completely and sits in the living room, trying to relax. He follows behind, still ranting and simply drops his pants expecting to be given a BJ ! No apology, no thanks, no "hi", nothing. She tries to ignore his behavior and makes a comment along the lines of "why be intimate with someone who doesn't appear to like me?" He then tries pinning her down and says something along the lines of "I don't like you because you don't let me check my emails" (I don't know how everyone else feels, but don't abusers sound like little children when they try to get what they want by saying "I don't love you if you do X". That's very childish, you either love someone or you don't) He resumes ranting and whining about something he wanted to look up in USPS and didn't get to. My friend eventually lets him go back on the computer, where he is for over an hour. As she sits patiently, he enters the same confirmation number on the same tracking page over, and over again. When he is done, she tries to start a conversation with him but goes into a paranoid rant about getting a mysterious envelope. She tries to kiss him, he won't let her do that either. He is eventually humored, after which he rolls over. She is at this point extremely frustrated and asks him whether he really has absolutely nothing positive or aff Sex doll. Very funny. I love the compassion. I'll be sure to show a similar attitude on your questions. My friend was mentally abused as a child and blamed for her parents' divorce, so that may have something to do with it. And actually, she's the least promiscuous person I know, she was saving herself for marriage until she found this guy at 21. Also, marriage is not the only reason why people stay in abusive relationship. Let's face it, marriage is basically just a piece of paper, it's your committment to the other person which ties you to them. Also, read up on the Stockholm syndrome. Finally, thanks everyone who responded seriously, I will definitely take up your advice! Nope, she's actually a 3.92 GPA in Mathematics, so it's gotta be emotional problems, not IQ. And BrownEyes, what do you mean that they are both toxic to EACH OTHER? come on. I agree that my friend has big problems to put up with this (previous abuse is one of them) but to say that she is toxic to the abuser? Come on LOL Re-read what you write!  more

Resolved Question: Are the palastinians THAT NEVER EXISTED IN HISTORY, are made up people?

If you consider Palestine to be a "Sovereign" and "Independent" country that goes back through most of recorded history as many would have you to believe, then a few questions need to be answered: When was it founded and by whom? What were its borders? What was its capital? Who was the President? What was its form of government? What were its major cities? What constituted the basis of its economy? Who was the Palestinian leader before Yasser Arafat? Was Palestine ever recognized by a country whose existence, at that time or now, leaves no room for interpretation? What was the language of the country of Palestine? What was the prevalent religion of the country of Palestine? What was the name of its currency and what was the approximate exchange rate of the Palestinian monetary unit against the US dollar, German mark, GB pound, or Japanese yen on any particular date? And, finally, since there is no such country today, what caused its demise and when did it occur? If these so-called "Palestinians" are anything but a generic collection of Arabs from all over the rest of the Arab world and if they really have a genuine ethnic identity that gives them right for self-determination, then why did they never try to become an independent and sovereign nation until Arabs suffered their devastating defeat in the Six Day War in 1967? + An answer to the stupid "Happily happy let me tell you something about the "palastinian" people - they are not a nation, THEY ARE FICTION! a muslim fiction that its only purpose is to destroy israel. will start with the name "palastinians" - the romans who conquerd israel, called it as a part of there conquest, "provincia palastina" - after the name of the philistines who setttled the coast lines of ancient israel. the "philistines", where red haird sea people, who originate in greece, who came to the coasts of israel FROM EUROPE, 1600 years before the birth of muhamad! there is no conection what soever betwean the arabs, and the philistines, not religiousely, not geneticalya, not culturaly and not historicaly! - and at the same messure, if the romans would of called "palastina" lets say..."provincia switzerland" - would it make the palastinians swiss?  more

Resolved Question: Not wanting to commit to fixed exchange rates, some govts occasionally use foreign currency intervention...?

to affect the value of their currencies. This is known as a managed flexible exchange rate system, or managed float, because it combines fixed and flexible exchange rates. The diagram below shows the market for euros, where the exchange rate is defined as U.S. dollars per euro. Suppose that the central bank for the countries in the euro system (the European Central Bank or ECB) wants to increase the value of the euro relative to the U.S. dollar. Illustrate how the ECB could achieve this without changing interest rates. EXTRA INFO:Most countries today use flexible exchange rates. However, through the history of the international monetary system, countries have adopted different approaches to fixing exchange rates. The hope was to facilitate trade and reduce the risk associated with buying foreign goods and assets. There is still considerable debate about the merits and drawbacks of fixed exchange rates.  more

Resolved Question: Will a high exchange rate in currency be ignored only because it appeared shortly?

Hi, On 8Jun, I got a USD/MYR currency exchange rate of 3.5460 through http://www.xe.com/ict/, however when I referred to the historical data in other website such as: http://www.fxstreet.com/forex-tools/rate-history-tools/ and other websites illustrated by graphs, neither of them showed 3.54. So just wondering is it possible that a rate will be ignored only because it appeared shortly? Also, if I am looking to trade with bank, which website suit me better considering the above 2 links. Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question. Big thanks for help.  more

Resolved Question: Help! Please help analyze this family situation.?

Background: 6 kids of 3 males and 3 females in oldest to youngest (Nate, Jone, Sue, Sally, Peter and John); mom is widowed and diagnosed with kidney failure. Peter has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder before and for the past year he's been more "normal." He is in his mid-late 20's and has never held a job for more than a few months and has always lived with older brother Nate never contributing anything. He has since moved out and now lives with mom. Sister Jone lives about 3 hours away and Peter has been coming up there every weekend unannounced at night time staying for 2-3 nights, asking for the keys and coming in and out in the middle of the night. Due to the history of Peter and his violent behavior, Jone is afraid that he might do harm and is taking advantage of her as he has been taking advantage of older brother Nate. There was a situation when all siblings (except for Sue and Sally) including Nate's kids were present when Peter exploded and turned very violent threatening to hurt everyone. That is when words were exchanged between everyone and Jone said if she had a gun she would shoot Peter right there. The cops were later called and took Peter away because of his threats and actions. Things have quiet down since then and the family thought Peter was doing better. Jone and her husband doesn't like what Peter is doing, coming to their house like that so she writes Peter an email. These were the emails that were exchanged: Jone to Peter: I was going to say something when you were here this past weekend, but frankly, I was too upset and didn’t want to come out the wrong way. Besides, I am better with written communication in terms of opening up. I will be frank. You coming over every weekend for the past straight four or five weeks now is not welcomed. This is disturbing our normal weekend routines. It is perfectly fine if you visit us once in a while, but doing what you have been doing is very rude and unwelcome. You show up unannounced---usually late at night and knock on our door. This disturbs me because we live in the Cities where the crime rate is very high. You ask for our keys and come and go as you please, coming to our house very late at night as if you live here. You even turn on the music loud when everyone else is asleep or make food and not clean up after yourself. These things are not acceptable even if you were a regular resident like John, but as a guest, this is even more rude. Once was okay, but repeated times now have caused a strain between me and my husband and I just wanted to let you know because it needs to stop. I had to go through this with everyone who’s ever lived with us and it is not pleasant. I usually have to be rude about it because if I don’t say anything then it seems like you or that person will never see the picture. I had to go through this with everyone who stayed with us temporarily. Hopefully when you get married you will understand. Hopefully you will understand that when someone gets married, their new immediate family is now their wife/husband and kids. They now come first. Having an extra body living with another family can cause strain. I’m sure you have seen this with Nate and his wife, and I don’t know why you never bothered to find a place of your own in respect to them. I know you living with them caused friction. Do you know what worries mother the most? I will tell you in order. It is you, John and Sue . Why? It’s because the three of you are still dependent on others. You haven’t “started your own lives” yet according to Mother. Every time I talk to her that is all she talks about. Those are her number one worries and with her health deteriorating she is even more worried. She is worried that the three of you won’t be able to take care of yourselves. You have asked me what you or what we can do to lessen the stress for Mother. Mother would love to see all of us make our own living and become successful in whatever we like. She keeps telling me how worried she is that if she was to pass away, then who are you going to live with? Nobody will accept you into their home. What she needs to understand is that you are an adult now and can perfectly take care of yourself. The reason why she doesn’t understand that is because she doesn’t see you doing it. If she sees you living independently and happily , I know that will relieve her more than anything. Trust me on this one. I hear it from her all the time. It is best that you do not come up this weekend. Sorry, but I hope you understand. This is the email response from Peter: I too will be frank. B ***, I'm not scared of you, but I know I can scare the shi _ out of you. When I come to your house this July for the Family Thing, you best keep your mouth shut or I'll bit * the f *** out of you in front of everyone. And that would embarass you, not me. So the next time you wanna say something to me it better be an apology because if it ain't, you'll be lucky I ever talk to you again. Anyway, sent this email to all the siblings so they are assured that I'm not the only one who sees how evil you really are. Y ou guys weren't there, but this b*** said that if she had a gun she would shoot me. Next time you wanna say something, becareful because I carry an audio recorder and I can turn you over to the court for threatening to end my life. Stupid b ***. Anyway, peace out everyone else. After reading the email from Peter, Jone has decided she no longer wants anything to do with him. She thinks he is hopeless and no longer has any sympathy for him despite him being "mental." Nate and Peter does not have a good relationship either. Peter does not like anyone who tells him what to do.  more

Resolved Question: PPP vs Nominal GDP of a Country?

Which method of GDP is more useful? According to me, PPP method is more useful as PPP takes into account the relative cost of living and the inflation rates of the countries, rather than using just exchange rates which may distort the real differences in income While, Nominal method just exchanges the GDP at Market exchange rate 'A Country always mentions its PPP GDP first and then Nominal GDP' If you see the Economic History, the GDP was measured in PPP so as to get the definite idea of a country's income http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_regions_by_past_GDP_(PPP) What you all say?  more

Resolved Question: What do you know about the World Bank and the IMF? Opinions on each?

A little history lesson: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank were created at a meeting of global financiers in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire in 1944. Their announced goals of creating these institutions were admirable and included facilitating world trade and stabilizing exchange rates of national currencies. Their unannounced goals were less than admirable and included eliminating the gold-exchange standard and establishing world socialism. The World Bank was modeled after the Federal Reserve and was made to redistribute money - disguised as loans - to underdeveloped countries and to do so in a way that insured the demise of free enterprise. The money being "loaned" came from other governments and was given to governments, resulting in an expansion of government. The money that is being sent to the underdeveloped countries is being drained through political corruption and waste, while at the same time it is lowering the economic welfare of the donating country. The leading theoreticians who crafted these institutions were the well known Fabian Socialist, John Maynard Keynes, and Harry Dexter White who was a a confirmed member of a Communist espionage ring. Despite different methods, both had a common goal: world socialism. Now that you are all well educated on the subject, are you in favor of the abolishing of the IMF and the World Bank? Come on people, I know there are a few intelligent people perusing this site right now that can contribute to this topic. Sack up ladies and gents. Adam B, The gold-standard is called that because everyone around the world agrees that gold is the only true form of currency. Fiat currency is our paper dollars that were originally just receipts of the amount of gold a person owned. You have a very weak argument here especially if you are arguing that various national currencies are more tangible than gold. It was not a secret that John Maynard Keynes was a socialist economist. His theories are the basis of the socialist ideology today. I have not presented opinions here. Only concise evidence regarding these institutions. The "loans" that have been given to LDC's by the World Bank have resulted in nationalization of farmland, and mass genocide in many cases through starvation. The money is not getting to the people, instead it is sitting in the hands of the dictators in these countries.  more
