Open Question: How can the U.S. improve college education?

President Obama wants the U.S. to become the most educated country by 2020 with more college graduates. The ideas he has is by improving the financial aid and student loan system. I think that there is more that needs to be done. It should start off in high school where students are preparing for college. What do you all think?  more

Open Question: The Hindu has Open Page. What about Indian express, deccan chronicle and others?

Hello, I've been trying to publish an article (about the negative aspects of the Indian education system) in a newspaper. I've tried twice with "The Hindu" but there is no response from them. I want to try some other newspaper but I don't read any other paper. Anyway, here's my question:- Just like "The Hindu" has the Open Page section on Sundays, do other newspapers like "The Indian express", "Deccan chronicles" etc (ones that operate in Chennai) have options of publishing articles written by readers? If so, can you please let me know the rules and email ID for publishing in the other papers? Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: GS jobs…pay rate question?

I ask this here, because I have asked in other sections and no one gives me a direct answer or has any idea what I am speaking of. I know many here have a concept of GS jobs or the system, so please do not attack me stating I have incorrectly posted. I am currently seeking a new career. I am diverging from teaching for a bit to see where else I can find my nitch. I rate GS 13 pay grade due to my two college degrees, I have been told this from within and by their pay GS level chart compared to education/experience. However, I have never worked a GS position before so I do not have the experience in my opinion to rate a 13. I recently applied for a position that ranks $80,000 starting pay alone up to $100,000+ depending on experience. I meet all the education, research/work experience and personal requirements. YET, I do not think I will get this position; I honestly think they will reserve it for a Vet with the same education as me. I still applied though just to try. At the end of the application process I was asked, “What pay rate do you think you should receive,” I answered around two GS #’s lower than the pay grade offered. I was trying to be humble in the fact that I didn’t expect to rate pay that high that quickly; however I have been told it will make me look desperate and that I am insecure about my abilities. Do you think offering to work this position for lower pay implies I am not confident and insecure or does it imply I am willing to work, not just for great pay, but primarily for a job? To those who have GS experience or contract experience working for the military/ government, what do you think? Odd question, hopefully I was clear. Marine, that was a very thorough answer. Thank you for responding and taking your time to do so. You have clarified quite a lot. I know I did apply for this particular job, and two others- that were listed on USAjobs. There is a position at Fort Lee and I submitted my application after filling out through USAjobs and the Army Civilian “resume builder” website. I just checked again and it says “applied” within the government website; so hopefully I did apply and I am not missing a particular step or if I have applied through the right sources. Time will tell if I am ever contacted for this job, but who knows. So thank you for clarifying much of it, you have been a great help. It seems like the GS system is very complicated when it comes to employment with many factors that come into play. By the way “Marine,” you so far have given the most truthful and extensive answer online or in person. It is nice to hear someone give you some facts about the system and hiring process. HDH, I have a Bachelors and Masters. I figured I in no way rated a 13, which is why I asked here; I honestly believe a 7 or 9 rating seems more appropriate. It sounded too fishy to come into a job and rate that high instantly. Thank you again for the book advice. As I said to “Marine,” the job application process for the GS system seems extensive and complicated. I did register and apply through USAjobs and my resume through Army Civilian resume builder as well. Thank you for your answer! I appreciate it.  more

Resolved Question: What is the list of goals the Communist Movement (that Obamas Mother and Grandparents were in) had in 1963?

The over riding main goal was to bring down our economic system, but they had intermediate goals to help in that goal. I know they wanted to control Education, infiltrate Unions more completely, corrupt churches to social justice, control critical reviews of entertainment, Control College Culture & Curriculum, Control k-12 educational information doing things like creating divides by skewing history by keeping out contributions by black Americans that had been in text books to make it seem they had no role, undermine the family structure and parental influence over children (Hitler loved that one, it worked great for him) and many others, 30s or 40s in bullet items on the list ... does anyone have the actual list they could post? Open Question: What would be a better solution to fixing American public school systems:?

A.) Extend the length of both the school day and the school year to allow students more time to learn everything that is required of them by the schools' curricula or B.) Create more focused curricula that allow the student to study a smaller range of topics, but allow them to go more in-depth with each topic allowing them to learn a series of subjects that they are more interested in, but still have a smattering of required courses (basic Math, English, History/Social Studies, etc.) to still give students a more rounded education or C.) Combine options A and B to create both a more focused curriculum and have the students in the schools for longer times, allowing them more time to absorb all of the material that is required of them  more

Resolved Question: What do you do when you're sick of life where you live...?

but youre not good at adapting either? i personally dislike the country i come from. the education system is stressful, youre not judged based on capability but instead on whether you hold a degree. and sometimes even if you are a holder of a degree, you are still turned down. secondly, im an introvert. its a small world here and the people are unforgiving towards those who dont have some sort of social status. everybody likes to think theyre popular. and trust me its not just some high school thing. this goes on into adulthood. to think people could remain so immature. im not good at adapting to a new life but im willing to try. do you have any tips on how i could do this? and also what is a good country to move to in your opinion?  more

Resolved Question: Am I right for thinking Communism and Capitalism Are Equally Bad?

In Communism brings forth a lot of good idea were everyone should be equals where we shouldn't Have Paris Hiltons walking stupid as _ _ _ _ c k while the little man works day and night only to end up with a fraction of what Paris Hilton spend in a Month over our life time. But of course the vision is not true the government has way too much power and the people are again being bullied by a system. Then we have Captilaism where 9.5 of the world are miserable while the other 0.5 have 5 Hotels across the globe. Who can have million dollar Buggattis while children starved to death. In capitalism we have spoiled brats who never have to work a day in their life because of the system. While 3'000 other children don't know how to spell education. Were a man can work 18 hours 6 days a week and make a 1/100 of what an American would in 48 hours. Where you work everyday of your life and still be thrown into a Nursing while your children scavenged of what remind of your life's work. So whats your take? My belief that there will be never be a system that doesn't require People to suffer and percieve. But will there ever be a system that lets us suffer the right way? P.S i would still support capitalism any day but their as bad as each other for me. They will never perfect the practice of communism because there can never be correct governance when a party can rule for 40 decades in a row.  more

Open Question: Why couldn't the USA be more like the European Union?

1) Too much diversity and people can't get along. I hear arguments about the USA having too many people and too much diversity. Well we can break the USA into a Liberal zone and a Conservative zone, and then the Liberal part of USA can more successfully become European with more social programs. 2) Too much Freedom results in the lowest common denominator of a Government When a Government is not properly funded, it is pointless to even have one. That is why we should have MUCH higher taxes in America, and then we can finally have REAL social programs like in European countries. They too are free like America, but more socialist and so it's a more fun system. 3) Europe has more outdoor cafes, more art and culture, more history, more love for society but America thinks they have it because of NPR or some bull thing like that. The USA needs not just to pay for some Sesame Street channel, but EVERY Channel should be Nationalized as public TV and the main USA TV channel should be Government-run like the BBC in Britain. 4) In the USA the rich are SUBSTANTIALLY richer than the poor. We should be in a society where the rich are not much richer than the poor and the poor common people have the greatest share of the wealth in society. 5) In Europe you have socialist movements, anarchist movements, art movements, artisans, poets, philosophers and socialist practices retained in Eastern Europe. If we introduced these things into America through Government programs and more Liberal education in all 50 states, we can work towards a more European-style America. I want to see a more European lifestyle in America because I love Europe. I wish I could live the European way of life. A lot of what bailed Europe out of the War was the Soviets you so condemn  more

Open Question: THIS IS MY COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY, IS IT READY TO BE SENT TO COLLEGES?

I would like to share with you something about my current medical situation. Ordinarily I would not do so, as I am an intensely private person, but I now accept that my physical limitations have quite possibly impacted my high school performance in a negative manner, and I feel that it is only fair that you have this information. Therefore, I am reluctantly going to allow access to information that I would never, otherwise, speak of. For the past several years, I have been afflicted by a physical situation that has sometimes interfered with my ability to focus, both in the classroom and out. I do not wish to be too specific about the symptoms of my disease, except to say that they are digestive in nature and sometimes require me to spend long periods of time in the Mens Room. Despite my terrible discomfort, I refused to accept that there might be something wrong with me, and would not seek treatment. I know now that I should have been less determined to suffer in silence and more willing to accept help. Finally, my parents insisted on bringing the matter to the attention of a physician. I was tested, over a period of several weeks, for colon cancer, Crohn’s Disease, intestinal obstructions, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, Heliocobacter pylori (commonly known as ulcer), celiac sprue (commonly known as wheat allergy), lactose intolerance, gallstones, bile duct stones, sclerosing cholangitis (the narrowing of the bile ducts), “Sphincter of Oddi” dysfunction and pancreatitis. You can imagine how relieved I was to learn that I had none of these terrible diseases. Finally, I received the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is sometimes known as spastic colon, nervous colon, nervous stomach, mucous colitis and spastic colitis, and is distinguished by abnormal bowel habits, such as diarrhea (loose stools), constipation or sometimes, as in my own case, both. It is well known to experts in this field that periods of stress can intensify the severity of IBS. I have certainly found my busy schedule of six honors/AP classes, Varsity field hockey, swimming and track teams, performing lead roles in three consecutive Spring Musicals, volunteering at the local animal shelter, tutoring at-risk children, and working three evenings a week plus all day Saturday at The Gap to be, at times, stressful, but of course it is impossible to say what has caused me to be afflicted with this very horrible syndrome. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS or spastic colon) is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits in the absence of any detectable organic cause.[1] In some cases, the symptoms are relieved by bowel movements.[2] Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate (classified as IBS-D, IBS-C or IBS-A, respectively). IBS may begin after an infection (post-infectious, IBS-PI), a stressful life event, or onset of maturity without any other medical indicators. Although there is no cure for IBS, there are treatments that attempt to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments, medication and psychological interventions. Patient education and a good doctor-patient relationship are also important. Several conditions may present as IBS including celiac disease, Fructose malabsorption,[3] mild infections, parasitic infections like giardiasis, several inflammatory bowel diseases, functional chronic constipation, and chronic functional abdominal pain. In IBS, routine clinical tests yield no abnormalities, though the bowels may be more sensitive to certain stimuli, such as balloon insufflation testing. The exact cause of IBS is unknown. The most common theory is that IBS is a disorder of the interaction between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, although there may also be abnormalities in the gut flora or the immune system. IBS does not lead to more serious conditions in most patients. But it is a source of chronic pain, fatigue, and other symptoms, and it increases a patient's medical costs, and contributes to work absenteeism. Researchers have reported that the high prevalence of IBS, in conjunction with increased costs produces a disease with a high societal cost. It is also regarded as a chronic illness and can dramatically affect the quality of a sufferer's life. In fact, doctors do not know what causes IBS, or why people who share my disease feel the need to have a bowel movement soon after eating, causing diarrhea, or why the prolonged spasm of the large intestine causes stool to stay in one area for too long and get dried out, resulting in small hard stools (constipation). As of today, palliative treatments are only in the experimental stage, and the hard truth is that there is no cure for IBS. It has been very difficult for me to accept this diagnosis at my young age  more

Open Question: Obama: You Scare me letter from Lou Pritchett (Proctor & Gamble). What do you think?

Why didn't he mention the fact that it scares him that Obama wears boxers instead of briefs? His irrational fears are typical of conservatives. Dear President Obama: You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me. You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you. You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support. You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American. You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll. You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don't understand it at its core. You scare me because you lack humility and 'class', always blaming others. You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail.. You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the 'blame America ' crowd and deliver this message abroad. You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector. You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one. You scare me because you prefer 'wind mills' to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves. You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world. You scare me because you have begun to use 'extortion' tactics against certain banks and corporations. You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals. You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people. You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient. You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do. You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaugh's, Hannity's, O'Reillys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view. You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing. Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years. Lou Pritchett This letter was sent to the NY Times but they never acknowledged it. Big surprise. Since it hit the internet, however, it has had over 500,000 hits. Keep it going. All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing. It's happening right now.* http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/youscareme.asp  more

Open Question: Does Europe's Universal Health-Care Comes At The Expense Of Quality?

everybody brags about european countries universal healthcare system that covers all. But they don't realize the quality is poor. These days, so many europeans especially in countries like denmark, UK, and germany are going elsewhere for certain types of procedures becuase the lack suffient technology, physicians, specities, or better tey, if they have it, the waiting lists are too long and people end up getting sicker or in some cases dye because they get get the treatment, care, or procedures quick enough. In any event, the US healthcare system is among one of the most advanced, high tech, innovatile in the world. It failes not because the system itself but rather a societal norms of fatty, sugary, salty, and health sickening food along with low exercise and resources to keep p[eople in shape and unaffordability unlike europe where people walk, exercise, have access to healthier foods, and otehr to assist. So in all, just because something is universal doesn't mean it its good. The waiting list in europe are long and physician education, residence, and fellowship requirements are not as competitive and challenging, and comprehensive as the united states.  more

Open Question: Will my traumatic/bad upbringing and poor GCSEs have spoilt my chances of getting into Oxford?

Hi, I know this is very long but I would really appriciate any advice you could give me. Thank you. I am really passionate about studying Law at Oxford and I ultimately aspire to become a lawyer when I grow up. I know I am smart enough and that I have the capabilites to do this but there are a few things which are worrying me. My mother is an alcoholic, I have no contact with my father or any of my family other than my grandma. I was taken into care the year of my GCSEs. I know what you are thinking about kids in care but I am not like they are at all. I don't do drugs and or alcohol nor have I had either of them ever in my life. I am a hard working, motivated student and it is all I want to to - study Law and become a Laywer. Because my mother was an alcoholic she couldn't afford to send me to private school (which I am highly resentful of) and I went to an ordinary state school. I was under a lot of stress during my final year at school due to entering the care system but I was also under going a traumatic home life most of my school years prior to Year 11. Because of this I do not believe I reached my potential in my GCSEs I got: A* - Geography A* - Religious Education A* - ICT A - English Language A - English Literature A - Science A - Media Studies A - Textiles B - Additional Science C - Math I am very disappointed in my results as I would have liked to do much better. I know I could have done if it wasn't for my upbringing. I was doing Beauty Therapy Sciences at college following my GCSEs but I decided to stop that and now going theough the enrollment process for my A Levels in September I am going to do either: Law, Business, Phycology and Sociology. OR Law, Business, Phycology and English Literature. OR Law, Business, Sociology and English Liternature. Because I am now living independantly and am no longer in foster care (I am 17, 18 in October) I know that I can get all As at A Level and I am going to some charity/voluntary work connected to children in care as this will tie into my background because I want to show that people who have been through the care system (even though I was only in it for 1 year) can achieve things like becoming a Lawyer, going to University, suceeding in life and so on. Will I have a chance of getting in Oxford if I get all As at A Level and do a good interview (if I got that far into my application), dispite my poor family background and GCSEs? Thanks for any help, it is much appriciated. x  more

Resolved Question: Parents: how do you plan to teach your children sex education?

Are you plan on teaching the "birds and the bees" yourself, or have them learn it through their school system? What stuff do you want taught to your kids (Abstinence, safe sex, homosexuality.. etc.)- and at what age do you think is appropriate? They are talking on the radio right now about offering condoms to elementry school kids.. and not having to tell the parents. is it just me, or is that insanity? Would that be contributing to the delinquency of a minor? What about age of consent and all that? Sorry, just listening in disbelief!  more

Open Question: Are you familiar with the Symington Amendment to the Foreign Assistance Act?

The Symington Amendment of the Foreign Assistance Act states: (a) PROHIBITIONS; SAFEGUARDS AND MANAGEMENT. —Except as provided in subsection (b) of this section, no funds made available to carry out the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 or this Act may be used for the purpose of providing economic assistance (including assistance under chapter 4 of part II of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961), providing military assistance or grant military education and training, providing assistance under chapter 6 of part II of that Act, or extending military credits or making guarantees, to any country which the President determines delivers nuclear enrichment equipment, materials, or technology to any other country on or after August 4, 1977, or receives such equipment, materials, or technology from any other country on or after August 4, 1977, unless before such delivery—(1) the supplying country and receiving country have reached agreement to place all such equipment, materials, or technology, upon delivery, under multilateral auspices and management when available; and(2) the recipient country has entered into an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency to place all such equipment, materials, technology, and all nuclear fuel and facilities in such country under the safeguards system of such Agency. For those of you intellectually challenged, this means that every dollar that is sent to Israel by our country is breaking the law. I'll edit it down so it is easier to understand. ...no funds made available... ...may be used for the purpose of ... ...providing military assistance... ...unless before such ... ...recipient country has entered into an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency to place all such equipment, materials, technology, and all nuclear fuel and facilities in such country under the safeguards system of such Agency.... So do you understand what this means about the $3+ billion that our government gives to Israel every year? That's right, it's all illegal. This is why no one in our government ever officially admits that Israel has nukes, because then we wouldn't be able to give Israel all that money. I'd like to remind you how Barack Obama answered Helen Thomas' first question to him as a new president: Do you know of any country in the Middle East that has nuclear weapons? ----I don't want to speculate. What I know is this: that if we see a nuclear arms race in a region as volatile as the Middle East, everybody will be in danger. And one of my goals is to prevent nuclear proliferation generally. I think that it's important for the United States, in concert with Russia, to lead the way on this. .  more

Open Question: transferring colleges?

Hello, I am a junior an Drexel University (I am enrolled in a 4 year with 1 coop plan but Im probably going to switch to 4 year plan with no coop, I am on the quarter system, not semester, this is my 7th quarter right now, class during summer sucks, I know). high school gpa=3.02ish, sat scores =620 math, 490 writing, 480 reading, although i retook the sat and did a little worse in math and better in reading and writing, i forgot the exact score, math was high 500's, reading/writing were low 500's I have a GPA of 2.41, mainly because I have insomnia and that fucked up my GPA, I would be getting a 2.7-3.3 if it weren't for chronic insomnia (missing classes which affects my grade in that class, and also the 3 classes I failed because of missing one final exam and the other two classes I failed were freshman year, fall quarter), i also have pretty bad ADHD but I can get around that, seeing that math and stuff like that is easy for me, its more of english and chemistry and history, etc that get me, i like physics though. I have documentation saying that I have ADHD, but not for insomnia, the doctor said I would have had to pay (my parents would have to pay because i dont have any money and its hella hard to get a part time job around here) hella money for cognitive therapy which would be an ongoing therapy session to help me learn how to fall asleep naturally and crap without any medications, and on top of that, i have tried everything i could think of to help me get to sleep, I think I might just be hella hyperactive or something and cant quiet my mind to fall asleep, every medication, except for cannabis, has completely failed and hasnt helped me get to sleep, such as valium makes me groggy but doesn't help me fall asleep, and on top of that, drugs like those are addictive and tend to wear off if taken a lot in succession More importantly, I am majoring in computer engineering, how hard would it be for me to transfer out to a good engineering school, maybe not as good as Drexel University, but somewhere close to the level of education. Also, as far as my grades go, the classes that have to do with my major are better than my other grades (chemistry, english, etc, except for my failing of math fall quarter freshman year and my grades that quarter) I want to know, what is the best school I will be able to transfer to with these grades, i am currently applying to here are my grades: fall freshman quarter: grades are terrible due to insomnia; missing classes and my mind was retarded ass not able to function because of the (around) 3 hrs of sleep a night for about a month, i felt sooo shitty, like my body was legit aching a bit when i would be awake, and it was terrible and stuff, unable to not spontaneously fall asleep during class while taking notes, probably should have tried to do a medical withdraw from that quarter or whatever, it was fucked up CHEM101UGGeneral Chemistry IF (due to insomnia) CS121UGComputation Lab IC- ENGL101UGExpository Writing and ReadingB ENGR100UGBeginning CAD for DesignCR ENGR101UGEngineering Design Lab IC MATH121UGCalculus IF (due to insomnia) UNIV101UGThe Drexel ExperienceC winter freshman quarter: CHEM101UGGeneral Chemistry IB+ CS122UGComputation Lab IIC- ENGL102UGPersuasive Writing and ReadingD ENGR102UGEngineering Design Lab IIA+ MATH121UGCalculus IA+ MATH279UGSt:Calculus I PracticumA-(this was because i failed math 121 first quarter and had to take this class along with math 121 my second quarter) UNIV101UGThe Drexel ExperienceA spring freshman quarter: COOP101UGCareer Mgmt/Profess DevCR CS123UGComputation Lab IIIC ENGL103UGAnalytical Writing and ReadingA ENGR103UGEngineering Design Lab IIIB MATH122UGCalculus IIA- MUSC121UGMusic Theory IC+ PHYS101UGFundamentals of Physics IB UNIV101UGThe Drexel Experience fall sophomore quarter: ENGR201UGEval & Pres of Exper Data ID+ ENGR210UGIntroduction to ThermodynamicsD (after taking this class, which was a bullshit ass hard class, i realized that mechanical engineering was more of the theory about it, and i would have rather been a computer engineer and learn theory about how computers work which i am finding to be really interesting) ENGR231UGLinear Engineering SystemsD+ HIST285UGTechnology in Hist PerspectiveD+ MATH200UGMultivariate CalculusW (withdrew due to missing class cause of insomnia) MUSC191UGClass Guitar I winter sophomore quarter: CHEM102UGGeneral Chemistry IID+ ECE200UGDigital Logic DesignC ENGR232UGDynamic Engineering SystemsD MATH200UGMultivariate CalculusC MUSC291UGAdvanced Class GuitarA spring sophomore quarter: BIO141UGEssential BiologyC CRT  more

Open Question: How anti-male is Gillard?

I noticed that in Gillard's changes to Australia's education system, she usually appears with girls and seems to ignore boys. Also Gillard is divorced and lives with a bald ex hairdresser man who does not work and lives off her income. I think myself that Gillard is very anti-male but has been careful not to show this in public as she wanted the Prime Minister job. She is on record as wanting to get more girls into engineering and ignores the fact that with Australia's gender biased education systems, student girls now outnumber boys in optometry, pharmacy, medicine, veterinary science, law etc etc. I can see the male/female conflict getting much worse under Gillard and increasingly men refusing to marry or cohabit with women.  more

Open Question: How to get good/free education in astronomy?

I dont know why, but I have become quite interested in a couple of things these last few days... ... for one, our measurements of time. ... two... the prospect of being able to plot and track the celestial objects. I want to be able to take an arbitrary longitude, latitude on Earths surface, and the current Gregorian date and local standard time... and from that I want to be able to compute and determine the exact direction to point my telescope. I want to do this for the stars in the celestial sphere, as well as for all planets, the sun, the moon. I dont care much about the minor objects. I want to know sunset and sunrise, daylight hours, etc. Lunar cycles. I accept that there is no simple, closed-form equation. But the point is I want to do this by hand using ephemeris and a calculator... not computers and planet tracking software. And I dont want to take ephemeris on faith, either, I want to know the basis of their calculations as well. I know this is a lot... probably years worth of astronomy and physics education... but I have learned over the last two days that the system is far too complicated for one person to fully grasp and anticipate. Accuracy is important. I am a believer in exact answers. And preferably I want to understand the system over "all of time" (absurd, right?) Open Question: What happened to second chances?

I am 21 years of age and it's so sad to say that my future is very dull because of the juidicial system that we have in our country. I am an intelligent former college student that have always stayed out of trouble and now I have been paying for something that I had no part in. I was accompanied by a friend of mine to the mall with the sole intention to shop which was only normal. Unfortunately I was at the wrong place at the wrong time and I found out that this''friend'' shoplifted items from the store when it was too late. I was arrested and treated like a criminal because the authority said that i was with her so it meant that I was involved. I took my case to trial with the intention of getting rid of this horrible nightmare but instead it only got worse when I was convicted because of my honesty in a crime that I had no part in. I was sentenced to 90 days in jail and this ruined me completely. I tried so hard to make something of myself and now it seems like I'm a million steps behind now. Its a barrier that i cannot overcome because I am treated like a criminal. I can't pursue an education without them asking for a background check, I can't get any job for the same reason. What am I suppose to do? Are we not allowed to get a second chance in this country? I have done nothing wrong. I would never do something so stupid to jeopordize my life like this. i hope that I can get some answers that can help me pass this obstacle in my life. Please help. Thank you  more

Open Question: What are the education standards in Europe?

I plan on home schooling my children in the future, but I am very disappointed in the low standards the American education system has for its citizens. According to statistics, European education standards are much higher than here in America. I would like to find details regarding the educational standards in European countries to use as a guide when I home school my children. I have searched the internet high and low and all I've been able to find are statistics saying European standards are much higher than American standards, but I haven't been able to find a list of the actual standards used in Europe. Would anyone know where I can find this information? I'm hoping to find some sort of list that maps out what a child is taught at each grade level in Europe. I know all European countries are different, so I will probably have to find standards for various countries and compare them.  more

Resolved Question: Mix feelings towards America (sorry, a bit long, my story)?

In love with some parts of America but secretly detest other parts of America... I have these mix feelings about America. (Well, I also have mix feelings towards my passport country AND the host countries I've grew up in) I'm in love with English. I enjoy learning it and appreciate it. I never lived in America but been to an American School in Latin America for 5-6 yrs. I think the American education is the best and if I were to have kids, I'd put them under the American education system. I love American country music... I love how Americans debate and communicate, everyone has their own point of view and more likely to think critically. (Well, in my country, ppl don't. They just memorize things, so I find it very hard and boring talking to them.) There are some other values and things I like about America... BUT There are also some other things... that... (sigh) I have to admit... that I secretly abhorre... I hope I don't offend anyone... or I don't mean to... but I think I would... if I type them out... I would anyways... please forgive me and understand... I think Americans are too materialistic.. some (not all, bc I have met incredibly nice American ppl too...) are very cocky... some are rude... disgusting... some real racists out there as well.... Not all are, but... you know, those who exist already can mess your good day... Ok, I know ppl can be racists everywhere... but, for instance, I wouldn't care if ppl in my passport country are racists against race X, when I myself am NOT race X. Since ppl in my passport country are of the same race as me, I don't care them being racists... as long as they're not agains't me. I mean, they caN'T bc they're of the same race AS me! You know what I mean? (Even though I don't like them to be racists against race X, either, but at least it's easier for me! I think this degree of selfishness is good and "fair enuf"...) Since I'm a mixture of cultures... I get annoyed anywhere. Like, I think in a more Western way, also the values. But I also share lots of my parents country. So, in my passport country, I need to hide my real identity, my background of living abroad. But in America or Latin America... Gosh... ppl are just too ignorant about the culture I come from... to a point that... to be honest... I loose my patience very easily... Again, not trying to offend... it is just that... (I need to vent?) It's only that... it can get very, very, very frustrated as well... Maybe as I grew older, I main gain even more maturity and PATIENCE... and maybe be more able to OVERlook... UNunderstanding of other ppl?... I would like to explore America (in fact, maybe some other places too, but starting with you guys, since I know I'm just too deeply influenced by your country...) I may need to make some sacrifices... I don't know if anyone beside me noticed this too or not... but in the American airport... ppl are just sooooo unfriendly towards Asian ppl. (Bc of 911 and terrorism? well, I don't know. but it has nothing to do with me...) When I lived in Latin America, we had to transit in America airports to go back to my passport country. Didn't had any other choice, since there isn't direct flights. The immigration ppl are just all so mean towards us... As a kid/teen, it lead deep mark, negative impression, of American ppl inside America in me... My HS teachers were mostly Americans, and there are also some in my passport country too. Some are pretty nice, some are ok... a few aren't too nice, but whatever... I thought those I met outside THEIR land are more tolerant toward us. Does this have to do with territorism? Maybe. But also, maybe those who are more tolerant, etc. are the ones who would try to live in another foreign country. And it's why I feel different impression... Or even, thirdly bc they had already picked up some multiculturalism abroad... I just can't imagine how would it be like, living in America, if some day I try to? I'm very hard to define, am a Third Culture Kid (but don't label me either, I may not agree with EVERY single stereotype... of TCKs...) I'm more like an in-between of ABCs and FOBs. I would be a FOB, since I wasn't born in the US, and never lived there. But there is also difference bt me and 100% Asian Asians... since I did lived in Latin America for 12 yrs in total growing up... And been deeply influenced ever since attending American school for nearly six yrs... I know many say that America is one of the least racist. But HEY!!! Maybe! Maybe! As a Whole! As an AVERAGE towards EACH RACE. BUT!!! AS AN ASIAN, we OBVIOUSLY DO GET RACISM outside Asia and NONE in Asia. Don't you get my point yet?!!? =) And, yes, ur right, I avoided saying my passport country. Why? Well, why not? Bc I really don't NEED to say it. If I say it, one, maybe I give it a bad name, I wouldn't like that. Two, ppl may be able to identify me even if I used another Avatar next time. It's the internet thing... I'd like to keep anonymous. Thirdly, I don't need to say it anyways. Let it be country A, B or C... we have similar concerns... so? Uhmmm... very sorry to point out two more anecdotes I've heard... One, (I know my country has its downfalls too, but in this one case, it is better.) I've heard this story of an operation in the States. A poor worker cut his fingers, had insurance, so the doctor operated him... BUT after two fingers were "put back"... they told the doc that the money isn't enuf for five fingers, so the doc literary THROW the remaining three fingers away!!! Just bc the poor worker couldn't pay! Well, I think that's pretty mean... ppl in my country all say/think this isn't very likely to happen in our country. Ppl here tend to lend you money/ give you a hand in these cases. Ok, I forgot about the second anecdote I was wanting to tell. I'll update it when I remember, haha... Oh! Now I remember the second story I wanted to tell... Uhmm... I know it's bad to just say XXX country ppl are all more "cold" or "unfriendly" "not as warm as..." since these are all too vague words to describe ppl, not giving detailed examples... Thus, I'm giving one: When I repatriated to my country after long living in Latin America, I couldn't quite adapt, and was kind of grumpy. I talked about my struggles with some other TCKs (ppl who lived outside their country). One of them told me to also appreciate the good side of "my" ppl. I was like, ask them "WHAT good side"? I don't remember she was Canadian or American... she said ppl in my country are very likely to give you a drive when you are in need. I was like, well, if ppl are friends, this isn't too much of a big favor to brag about. I mean... "I" would have done the same too! We help each other! Is this different in other places? She actually told me that when she lived in North America, a "friend" left her in the SNOW and wasn't willing to drive her home. And let her wait in the snow for HOURS. I was a little bit shocked hearing this. It has never happened to me. And I am checking here/now, is that common in North America, when your "friend" is in need, you don't think you should give them a ride only bc you think it's your friend's own bussiness? Is this about "Independence" (ppl used to take care of themselves and not depending on others?) or would anyone consider this to be a bit of "selfishness"? Know selfish is a harsh word but... Is it really "cultural"? If these two anecdotes are not outlier examples but rather "common" then maybe I need to make sure I had enuf money and have my own car, etc. if I would go there... In fact, I DO AGREE that greed is good. It CAN be good. But I truly only meant the bad side of greediness. Like, when it goes out of control... A bit too much....? I undestand we all need "Balance" in everything!!!  more

It seems like it is. I had high hopes for Princeton and even Yale but it seems like I try so hard but very little progress is made (that explains the Bs I got). I know my school's grading system is rather harsh, but is that exceptional to colleges, considering in a typical high school (American) grading system is 90-100 A, 80-89 B, etc. This is effecting my cumulative GPA. My school also does not weigh Honors/AP classes, except for my Pre-Calc class which is for some reason 7.5 credits instead of just 5. I work my ass off, especially after Freshman year as you can foretell. I was a bit lazy Freshman year but I did have harder classes and never had to attend summer school like 40% of my class did -- and I had Honors classes. My GPA is currently a 4.0 (last quarter) and my cumulative is a 3.7 unweighted, of course. I would be valedictorian but 3 kids from a preceeding grade skipped to my grade and somehow got ahead of my entire class. Is that fair? Can that even be done. I was asked to skip but I chose not to -- I felt my junior year was significant of course. Also, do Study Halls go on your transcript? I have As in them, too? Resolved Question: Is it wrong for state & local government to support colleges & universities?

In a pure free-market society, I think, the United States just wouldn't have the big "land grant" universities, like the Big 10 schools and the "Pac 10" schools and colleges like Georgia Tech, University of Virginia, Texas A&M, and so on. A true "free market" society wouldn't have any state-sponsored or city-sponsored community colleges, either. Would it be good to get rid of these State supported educational institutions, which seize money from the taxpayers and distribute it to the students at these collages (who sometimes waste their time and skip class!), while the taxpayers also end up paying an educational "elite" of pampered professors? Would it be desirable for America to return to a much older system of higher education, in which nearly all significant colleges & universities (including Harvard, etc.) were founded & administered by Christian churches? Anton: what about imposing taxes on millionaire investment bankers, not dishwashers, to support the teaching of liberal arts? And to support the teaching of other things, of course: pharmacy science, accounting, business administration, chemistry, environmental science, social work, medicine, political science, police work, etc. etc.  more

Resolved Question: "Women are welcome to equality, as long as I am not discriminated against". Do most males feel this way?

I am all for gender and racial equality, provided I am not discriminated against in education and work. However, gender biased education systems and affirmative actions do discriminate against males, in favour of females. Thus I am anti-feminism. I was always in two minds about marriage and children and the present discrimination against males by females decided the issue for me and I will remain single. The number of men who feel this way is increasing daily with us professionally qualified men leading the way. Women ae welcome to their equality so  more

Resolved Question: What do you think CEOs to push legal status for undocumented immigrants?

NEW YORK -- Chief executives of several major corporations, including Hewlett-Packard, Boeing, Disney and News Corp., are joining Mayor Michael Bloomberg to form a coalition advocating for immigration change — including a path to legal status for all undocumented immigrants in the United States. The group includes several other big-city mayors and calls itself the Partnership for a New American Economy. It seeks to reframe immigration changes as the solution to repairing and stimulating the economy. The CEOs said Thursday in statements that their companies — and the nation — depend on immigrants. It's our great strength as a nation, and it's also critical for continued economic growth," Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Robert Iger said in a statement. "To remain competitive in the 21st century, we need effective immigration reform that invites people to contribute to our shared success by building their own American dream." The group said it intends to make its point to policymakers by "publishing studies, conducting polls, convening forums and paying for public education campaigns." The tactics are similar to those used by Bloomberg's coalition of mayors who support gun control. Bloomberg has for years criticized the federal government for its immigration laws, proposing in 2006 a plan that would have established a DNA or fingerprint database to track and verify all legal U.S. workers. The billionaire mayor, a former CEO of the financial information company Bloomberg LP, also said at the time that all 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States should be given the opportunity for citizenship, saying that deporting them is impossible and would devastate the economy. Lawmakers who wanted to deport all illegal immigrants were "living in a fantasy world," he said. He has recently taken up the fight again, declaring this week that U.S. immigration policy "is national suicide." "I can't think of any ways to destroy this country quite as direct and impactful as our immigration policy," he said Wednesday. "We educate the best and the brightest, and then we don't give them a green card." The group's main immigration goals are to secure the borders, develop an easy system for employers to verify work eligibility, hold companies accountable for breaking the laws and improve the use of technology to prevent illegal immigration. The group also wants more opportunities for immigrants to join the U.S. workforce and a path to legal status for all undocumented immigrants. Bloomberg spokesman Jason Post said no money has been spent on the effort yet, and he could not say whether the group will be a standard nonprofit, a political action committee or a group known as a 501(c)4 nonprofit, which can operate outside the more strict limits governing political action committees. The business leaders in the coalition employ more than 650,000 people and make more than $220 billion in annual sales, combined. Among the members is Australian-born Rupert Murdoch, chairman and CEO of News Corp. "As an immigrant myself, I believe that this country can and must enact new immigration policies that fulfill our employment needs, provide a careful pathway to legal status for undocumented residents and end illegal immigration," Murdoch said in a statement. The effort marks Bloomberg's return to national issues after he spent 2009 campaigning for a third term, focusing mostly on New York City's municipal concerns. The Republican-turned-independent spent about two years testing the waters for an independent 2008 presidential run, but ultimately he gave up the idea. By recruiting business leaders and mayors into a national-issue coalition, he is highlighting both of his backgrounds in running a city and running a business, which could be seen as an early move to dust off his presidential aspirations. http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/06/michael_bloomberg_recruits_ceo.html  more

Resolved Question: Should boys be taught at school that the best way to get back at feminism is to refuse to marry?

and refuse to have children? It is what us intelligent men are doing in increasing numbers. The effect is that many women drop out of the workforce to become single mothers via sperm banks etc. Those single mothers that keep working often only just hold down their jobs, as they cannot do overtime etc to to child rearing commitments. Many women say that they are anti-feminist, but they then take advantage of discrimination against men by not objecting to gender biased education systems and affirmative action in the work place. Therefore women encourage discrimination against men.  more

Resolved Question: In view of The Ol' Grappler's deadly accurate prediction about Julia Gillard becoming our Australian PM...?

...can we now expect:- a) Some positive move towards restoring the gender balance in the teaching profession? b) Some positive move towards restoring genuine EEO (Equal EDUCATION Opportunity) for boys by a change in the current teaching/grading system that favours girls? c) Some positive intervention with the States, in the Keating mould, with regard to the required changes in DV laws in order to restore the proper balance of law and legal rights? d) Immediate abolition of EEO legislation so as to restore to EVERY Australian genuine Equal Opportunity of Employment? e) Institution of a genuine Bill of Rights that will safeguard every Australian EQUALLY from state-sponsored violence such as DV and so on? There are more, but I would have thought that this short list is absolutely mandatory given the claim of feminists to genuine equality. Igor - take a bow for that deadly accurate prediction about the installation of a 'lame duck' female PM, just as a try-out by Labor!! Mira - my dear child - it is painfully obvious that you were not around in 1986, when the government deliberately changed things so that girls would 'not be disadvantaged'. Funny that! so now expecting things to go back towards the middle is somehow dumb to you?  more

Open Question: So how do we improve the education system in the US so our kids can compete with the kids in other countries?

Obviously cutting after school sports would cause bad reactions by Americans, although when I was in Germany and Japan and other European countries, if you wanted to play sports you played at a local center or club, school was STRICTLY for education. Well I am sure there are other things we can do to improve the public education system, what can be done? Best proposal gets best answer.  more

Open Question: How does the British University/Higher Education System work?

I live in the United States (California) and going to be a Senior, and I've been thinking I want to go study somewhere foreign and England highly appeals to me since I want to possibly study Anthropology or Sociology. But I want to know how would I apply or would it be the same as here? And if I come back to the U.S, would the degree I receive over there be valid here in the U.S? Because I know if people from other countries come here they have to retake their higher education here because thier degree isnt vaild or does it depend on the country? Please provide as much information as possible. Provide Sources as well or links. Thanks.  more

Open Question: Wow, a football player managed to get into a good school with a C average, what is wrong with education system?

**forgot to add in THE because I was running out of characters I have lived in a lot of different countries, I am highly patriotic and I love America but it is so sad when I see kids with A average grades, good resumes, good extra curricular activities (leader of cultures club) and great SAT scores 1900 and above) get rejected from some good schools while a guy who can just play football well gets offers from the top schools. When I was in Japan and Germany, they didn't even HAVE school sports, you wanted to play sports you played them outside of school and in local community centers. The emphasis placed on education was so high. In America, I see schools spending millions on making a good football stadium or thousands on renovating a basketball court but not enough on renovating old chemistry labs and getting better textbooks. Do you think the high emphasis on high school sports is one of the reasons our schools and our students cannot compete with students in other countries? wow golly, one GOOD CRACKER answered my question!!  more

Open Question: How do I reduce strong prescription medication withdrawals?

My name is Ariel, and I am 17 years old. I have severe lower spinal problems from two vehicle accidents. One in a middle school bus, where I was the worst victim of being ran into by a company bread truck. The second was while I was at a dead stop with my mom in our Dodge Neon, and we were rear ended by some old eighties hunker, but that was after I was already experiencing some problems. I had nine bulging and/or herniated disks, Spinal Stenosis, and Sciatica. I was on the medication that I am currently on two years ago. I slowly came down, but with months of withdrawals that were excruciating and hindered my from going to school, and I had to be homeschooled for three semesters, also from the pain it caused from not having the medicine as well. But as of now, I am on morphine sulfate, percocet, robaxin(muscle relaxer), and the worst, neurontin(nerve relaxer, that will cause the worst of the withdrawals). I take them all three times a day, and I am completely maxed out on the robaxin and the neurontin, meaning I am at the max dosage. Now that I have graduated high school, I would like to be able to work and go to school to become a Special Education teacher without having to deal with the medication side effects, also, even when I miss one dose, I get withdrawals, so that is very distracting, having to stop everything to load up on meds. It was my decision to stop the last time, even against the doctors orders for similar reasons and I am afraid I might be going down a similar path. I have have surgery to remove and repair two of my worst discs, and I have recived many epideurals of steroids into my spine to help and I believe that, and the more I became active and have stregnthened my back I am ready to leave all this medication behind me. I am afraid of the withdrawals that will happen again. I have these patches from the pain management to help with that, but so far they have just made me very tired and exausted so far. They are the Clonidine Transdermal System 0.1 mg/day patches, and I don't know if it's just cause I just started them and I have to get accustumed to them just like the medicine. I just need some advice, I am freaking out. Tomorrow, Thursday June 24, I am going to the pain management to talk about things I can do, like different things to help with the withdrawals. I've started going down on my meds, but I just wanted to ask you guys some things I could talk to him about to go there prepared with some possibilities to talk to him about. Please help!!!  more

Open Question: Can you please tell me what you think of my cover letter?

I read with interest your posting for a Peer Tutor in the Student Affairs department here at Portland State University. Having just spent the last two months tutoring at risk youth—who really had no desire to be tutored or taught—I can imaginatively see myself flourishing in a setting where my skills will not only be put to good use, but appreciated in their natural state. As a former autodidact adolescent, I grew into anew; I am now a firm believer that education is an investment in oneself as well as the community. Having recently started my MS in Post-Secondary Education through Portland State University’s ELP program, I feel as though I am experiencing my own personal renaissance, and am elated to help others move in the same direction. I believe that the most effective method of tutoring would be best managed through the role as a mentor; Concerned with supporting our natural or intrinsic tendencies to behave in effective and healthy ways, and helping others benefit from these factors. In my early years working for Barnes & Noble not only did I learn how to alphabetically shelve books, but I built character, I learned how to listen, and be articulate; my experience at Circuit City taught me how to be more technical, and not overlook all the nuts and bolts of any project, system, organization, or dispute; and during my 4 years as an undergraduate in the graphic design department I gained the ability to become structured, organized, and I learned how to fine tune all the details. All of the aforementioned attributes I have acquired have thus far paved an exceptional experience in the field of education, and I have found this world to be prosperous and rewarding. My overall philosophy on education is that an individual be all-inclusive. If both innate and life learned skills are utilized, then the pleasure of working in the education field will be accepted not solely by the customer, but also by the mentor, the organization, and the community. I hereby enclose my resume, and other required materials for your review. I look forward to speaking with you further about what I may offer Portland State University as a peer tutor in the Student Affairs department.  more

Open Question: Why has the USA lost so much of its greatness?

Maybe its just because I was a naive child, but growing up I always though USA was well ahead of the rest of the world, we had the tallest buildings, the best skylines, we had the best space program, the most advanced technology, the internet was ours, the computer and software companies were ours, most electronics were once made here, we had good health care, the best military, and we we had some of the best education. We no longer have the best or biggest skylines, we no longer have the fastest internet, we rank poorly with our health care, practically no manufacturing left, our educational system is embarrassing, our space program is out of money while the rest of the world is starting to invest, we've outsourced all our companies and all the technology they had with them, everything we buy is from over seas, the rest of the world laughs at our car industry, they are bailed out and subsidized, it just seems like all we have left it a good military, and all the CEO jobs. Not trying to be negative, just some what depressed looking at what we have left. How much longer can we continue this trend, and why is this happening? Is it greedy companies? Or is in the unions? Or is it taxes and government? Lack of quality education? Or some 'conspiracy' to equalize the world for the new global market?  more

Open Question: Why do people flame backlash with derogatory insults about illegals? when they know nothing of history?

Why do people flame with insults racism etc etc about Mexicans when Americans have no idea what Mexico and whole Latin America has gone through ? Dont you know people go to the north for a better life and work?. oh wait you say Mexico does the same thing about asking papers? Well im sure your visit for 3 weeks at Cancun isnt for a settlement lifestyle but its a vacation for your materialistic life. These Illegal immigrants want is a a roof over there heads and a future for there childrens But then again you say all immigrants are criminals trafficking illegal drugs. Well maybe if congress in 1913 would have never passed the marijuana act. we wouldnt see marijuana trafficking as much in But you say they are drug abuser and supply the united states. Well mexico aint a pretty place. Everything is corrupted even police authorities. If you were in there shoes ( if they have any ) I know for a fact that you would try at least in you last human instincts search for a better life. In mexico there is 4 option Farm for pennies a day or sell things for pennies a day. Get into the drug business to make money. or head north. You ask yourself why do these Mexicans in mexico do criminal activity? because when your education system and political system is flawed in mexico it becomes chaos. So people you know what money and power so they do criminal things to make a living. I mean this applies to Middle east. Well Opium crop. I hear soldiers talk about Taliban soldier just joining the rebellion to get paid and some solider said a simple solution is givign them a better life and jobs. You see the USSR ( i do not support them ) wanted to industrialize the middle east. So the USA gave arms and supported the Islamic extremest to fight the equality ideology. So opiums crops went up and since they have power they took over the opium business which his a problem today. Now after the USSR left civil war broke out ( of course with all those weapons laying around) You see NAFTA has hurt the agriculture greatly in Mexico, So everything is has become some what of government/ feudal land/ cooperate system. So the farmer loses alot of money and competition etc etc etc Government officials all over were established by Americans has dictatorship to stop Peasants from revolting in Latin American. yes this is a fact even the CIA says they did it to stop communism. If i may recall that the United Fruit Company ( backed by the Eisenhower administration ) in Guatemala Revolution [ 1953 ] they did the same thing in contrast. Farmers lost crops because of big cooperate competition. The UFC owned all railroads, all plantations, all ports. Sure it created jobs for pennies a day. So in human instincts the peasants farm workers said no more and revolted.. in other words Marxist/ Communism revolution for Public land ownership and against privatization. Some fled the country. thats why you see alot of criminals activity in L.A after 1960s because they fled to California or Mexico- ( Capital of exiles ). there is alot of data that contrast to this simple semi feudal slave labor.. even in Asia but i dont want to waste your time. i dont still understand why Americans criticize Illegals for all this non sense when there is alot OF INFORMATION BEHIND IT Yes i know there is typos Karl Marx once said 150 years That national boundaries create civil war. A good example of this is Middle east and Africa they fight just for territories. I cant wait untill America becomes so contained that it wont let no citizenship leave america too with these Nationalboundaries. Lol then people will might wake up to fascism Thats america for you. no one wants to read about what Latin America went through but yet they criticize Latin America of what they are trying to do to help themselves. Which is BETTER LIFE IF YOU DONT CARE OF MEXICO OR LATIN AMERICA WENT THROUGH THEN YOU SHOULDNT BE EVEN BE RANTING ABOUT WHY MEXICANS COME OVER TO AMERICA IN THE FIRST PLACE. Its like saying I could care less what the Constitution says but im going to support america and patriotism ohbrother- If there not farm workers like i said and there criminals LIKE I SAID criminal activity does not happen for no reason there is a reason behind why they do it. Please read you ignorant fool  more

Resolved Question: Culturally Speaking: Why is it a crime on the internet to say anything positive about the US?

You call Americans fat, stupid and all that, well that is okay. You point out facts like the US has the strongest military in the world, that the US deserves to be titled the most innovative country in the world (videogames, internet, computer, telephones and a lot of other stuff were first invented int he US), that the US has the best universities in the world (we know Oxford and Cambridge are good but the US has Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Cal Tech, Stanford, Brown, Northwestern, Georgetown, Columbia University, and should I even go on), and other good things everyone (including SOME Americans want to throw a fit). Now I agree that America is not perfect but I can say life here is what you make of it, no time to waste comparing the US to a third world country but I will compare to some European countries like Spain and Italy where people throw bananas at the Black soccer players, do you even know what would happen if someone throw a banana at an African American NFL star here in the US? Maybe my fellow Americans need to get some sense and travel abroad (especially brothas and sistas that hate this country) to see just how well folks in other countries will treat them. People complain about the education system in the US and how our high schools are failing, well the private schools, high schools in the suburbs and the magnet schools are doing more than okay and people call us fat, well not all of us are fat you morons, sorry we have good food to eat, by the way most of the fat people are in the deep south anyways. Now why is it such a crime to say something good about the US when the good things are true?  more

Resolved Question: Do minority kids hold back other students?

BEFORE you all scream listen to the arguement. This is based on my years in the school system and fellow co-workers. Its no secret that the public education system is designed to just get kids bye. basically they teach to the lowest common factor, the slowest kids. This makes it harder for more gifted kids because they must spend longer periods of time on simple (for them) problems while these others struggle to comprehend them. Basically it boreds them and they never have to really work. it also slows down the curriculum. no statistics show that minority kids (hispanic and black) are at the bottom of the performance charts (for whatever reason, i personally blame it on parents who never care about the kid until the teacher suggest they repeat or move to a remedial class) so the other kids have to have their education slowed. This could be solved by breaking up classes based on test scores like they do in asia, but that would be a PC nightmare if you had to put a large amount of minorities in "not advanced classes" and god forbid any kid doesnt think he is s genius. Yes, there are some minorites that are brillient, and they to suffer because of this PC everyone is equal BS. So basicall PC and worrying about diversity backlash is ruining our eduaction system.  more

Open Question: What do you think of Japan's education system?

Those high IQ's Japan has become renowned for don't come at a small price. Children, from as yound as 5, go to school for 10 to 15 hours a day. Education in Japan is extremely competitive, and hoards of students commit suicide every year. I am asking this because some people seem to be under the misguided idea that people are simply born with high IQ's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfItu2eR_1s  more
