Open Question: a 4 year college vs. Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy.?

I am nearing the big decision. Where to go to school, after high school. I do plan on going into the gaming industry as a programmer after all of my schooling is done. Flashpoint is a two year school where you study in your focus points whether it be game development, or filming. The school is very hands on and interactive, in which you have the ability to work with actual game development pros and companies, but only earn an associates degree seeing as its a 2 year school, where you'd be attending 5 days a week for about 30 to 40 hours a week. What I am currently torn between is whether it would be better for me to go to a school such as Flashpoint where i can focus on game development, and get a good education in the developing of games. Or spend time at a 4 year college getting a good knowledge of programming but not in depth into exactly what i would like to do. So should i go to a four year university and get a good in depth knowledge of programming, which honestly could be learned from self teaching in my case, or go to flashpoint where i will get hands on experience with exactly what i would like to do; working with teams on games, developing games, using the latest and greatest game development technology, engines, and editors. Also would i suffer that much only having an associates degree over having a bachelors from a 4 year school?  more

Open Question: Questions about Scholarships?

I am a 16 year old girl of hispanic descent. I have very good grades (4.0, altho I'm expecting that to drop this year, I'll prolly end up with a 3.8 or 3.9). I am planning to become a nurse practitioner. I was also a foster kid. So, I get free college, for four years, in the state of WI. Problem is I need 6 years of education. Also, I need money, in general, for food, books, and basic necessities (toilet paper....that's needed). I am going to be a junior this year, in high school. 1. Are scholarships just cold, hard cash? So, could I in essence gain scholarships and use the money for my books, and food? Or do they just hand the money over to the school? 2. How early should I begin applying for scholarships? 3. Are scholarships hard to get? That's all I got for now, thanks in advance:)  more

Open Question: Clinton Anderson vs Pat Parelli vs others?

I'm open to any suggestions. Which would be better for training a wild horse? I don't plan on showing or competing in anything. I'm just looking for respect and an occasional trail ride. Also, what DVDs or education references should I buy from your preferred trainer? Right now I am loving Parelli. But Clinton seems like he's almost the exact same, just a little more assertive. Thank you :)  more

Open Question: Is biomedical science a good thing to major in?

I am trying decide on what to major in, in college. I know that in the future I plan on furthering my education by going to dental school after i get done studying my four year undergraduate degree. But i am having trouble on what i actually want to major in. I know that if i plan on dental school, majoring in something in the science field is a good idea. After I researched the topic for a while I found out about Biomedical science and i think it sounds really interesting. But the thing i really want to know is that if at the end of my four year college degree in Biomedical science, that i decide not to move on to dental school, would it be easy to find a job with just a Bachelors degree in biomedical science? And what jobs would be open for me with this degree? Thanks:)  more

Open Question: Finish Education Early?

I'm 14, going to be a freshman in high school soon. I'm planning to finish HS at 18, and go to college. From there, I plan to study for the degree for an MD, or (Doctor of Medicine). Before going to med school, students must complete a four year undergraduate degree and take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Then the degree itself takes another four years to get. Then, I have to complete at least one year of internship and pass the examination. Since, this altogether adds up to nine years before I can actually start practicing. I want to finish early, if possible skip the four years of undergraduation. This is because I'm placed in a special program at my high school, which serves the same purpose as the undergraduation, a foundation to medicine. Are there any universities that allow that? Anyone have any tips for finishing early? My family has some money saved up for college... so I don't need to work while in college, if everything goes accordingly.  more

Open Question: How to fill out skills specific resume form?

I'm still in high school and need help with the education part of my resume form. It says to put school name and location and my degree/certification. I've went to a public school for my freshman year then switched to an online school. I'm unsure if I should put both schools or just the online school I've attended the longest and plan on graduating from shortly. Where it tells me to put my degree, what do I put there? Do I leave it blank? Also, when I put down the location do I put the whole address (for example- 555 maple ave, boston, MA, 55555?) Or would I just put the city and state? Thanks!  more

Open Question: Getting an Education and Living Life?

I'm 15, soon going on 16 and later on down the road I want to be a filmmaker. My influences are filmmakers and directors like Quentin Tarenteno, Martin Schorsase (Don't really know if I'm spelling any of these names right or not), Oliver Stone, Alexander Aja, David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Tony Scott, and Eli Roth. I wanna travel around the world before and during trying to become a filmmaker, plan on going to Hawaii, seeing the whole U.S., Canada, Amsterdam, France, Germany, Russia, Ireland, and so on. I was hoping their was a film school I could go to in Hawaii, but havn't really got any results if their is or not. I live in Columbus, Ohio and am going to high school. Evreyone tells me, to go and finish high school, study for the tests, try hard, and blah, blah, blah. But the way the world is right now, the people in it, the economic system, and the way my life is heading, I don't see any of my future heading anywhere or anywhere good for that matter. I want to do more with my life than become a normal citizen, finish school, get a job, and so on, with the bs. I want to do something, become a great filmmaker, see the world, get a new perspective on life, and go completley outside the box. The teachers and people said, If I don't finish high school, then I should go to a career center, and learn some skills or some sh*t. I just keep seeing one point of life, with going to school, paying bills, and going through the motions, as one f*ucked up game after the other. If the filmmaking career don't follow through completley, than I have no real reason to live, so this is very, very important, that my plan in life works. Does anybody know anyway or any steps I could do to becoming a filmmaker? What should the solution or answer be?  more

Open Question: Visa rejected .Require urgent help.?

Hi, I had applied for a US Visa on the 1 July 2010 and it was rejected.I then reapplied by a)paying the HDFC fees again b)Taking another appointment. Are there any other formalities that need to be done before the second visa interview. Also, I am quite worried about why I was rejected the Visa in the first place. a)The VO asked me why I chose that specific University .I replied by saying that the research for one, was really good there. b) She then asked me what my future plans were.I said I plan on coming back to India and working. She claimed that my reasons for studying there and my future plans were incongruous since if Good research facilities is why I'm going there, then I should want to pursue a Phd.After some more convincing, she denied me the Visa. Can someone please tell me what I should have said when she asked me 1)What my Future plans were and 2)Why I chose a specific University. 3)I have taken an education loan that will support me easily for the first year and more.Do I still need to show funds in an account? Will the loan not suffice as the necessary fin. support? Thanks, I would really appreciate the help.  more

Open Question: Which job would you choose?

I currently work in a hospital as an I.T. professional (information technology aka computer person). The benefits are really good, however the pay is not that great, I make enough to pay my bills and have extra but not near what I'm worth with my background and education. These are the benefits I have with the job I have now Medical/Dental/Optical - the medical plan I have a $100 deductible and if for any treatment I have at the hospital I work at after the deductible, everything is covered 100%. There are multiple plans for this to choose from, but both for group premiums seem high, I've worked at other companies where they were better premiums, however the companies also had more employees. For the dental and optical they are average. 403B (401K)/Pension: They contribute to this whether or not I do, however they only mate 50% of what I put in up to 5% of my wages. Any other job I've had has matched 100% up to either 5% or 10%. Vactaion: I have been here for 2 years and get just over 3 weeks of vacation. Sick time: I acrue 1 week of sick time per yer, what I don't use they pay me for at the end of the year. I have been offered a new job. I wasn't really looking for a new job, but I had a resume on a job website and their human resources deparment found it. They did a phone interview with me and then forwarded it to their hiring manager for the position and their VP of information technology. I then had a face to face interview with both of them. This job is in the banking industry at a local credit union with multiple locations. The job itself is a information technology job. The benefits though aren't as good, it has the same medical/dental/optical benenits but the medical is the expected/average 80/20 plan. Their 401K is 100% match up to 10%. Vacation is 2 weeks a year, and sick time is 1 week. Pay is much better, I'm paid hourly and this position is also hourly but its about $8-10 hr more an hour then I make right now, which by the year is almost $20,000 more. I say 8-10 because at my current job I have a base wage, plus a differential shift premium for working 3rd shift. It suits my skill set better - I'm over qualified for the job I have right now. Its a better working schedule - right now I have a hard time going to school because my schedule rotates, for 2 weeks I work 9p-730a and then for 1 week I work 6p-430a. So any classes I'd need to attend actually at the campus in the morning would 1 week be in the middle of my sleep schedule, and in the evening 2 weeks would be in the middle of my work schedule. Overall the job I have not despite the pay, I like it there. I like my boss and the majority of the co-workers I have. However the 2 direct co-workers I have are harder to work with, they are both twice my age so there is a generational gap, and both are very threatended by me. One found out by snooping that I was hired in at more than both of them were already making after being there 3 & 4 years each, I didn't tell either of them how much I make. We have a software that allows remote access into company computers and one night while I was working with him he remoted into my computer while I was viewing my paycheck. Their attitude towards me is very poor, I have more I.T. experience then both of them combined and they get mad when I know the answer to a question that they don't, one complains about everything all night long and the other one whines about everything that is wrong in her life. I know sometimes I am part of the problem rather then the solution because I don't let them walk all over me (they are not my superiors), but the 2 people were in my job prior to me (and them) had the same complaints about them and I figure it cant be all 3 of us. They are very bad for moral. I'm nice to them and help when I can when they are having problems of being able to fix things, however I've also taken up only talking to them if it is work related. Everyone else in our I.T. department I get along fine with.  more

Open Question: Will this win an academic suspension appeal?

my third draft To Karl Boysen: I am writing a letter to appeal my suspension at Texas State University. I am a freshman and I have a GPA of .82, which is unacceptable. I am currently studying pre-Theatre. Just before I left Corpus Christi, my grandfather passed away. He and I were very close and we loved each other, especially through our love of music. He inspired me to go after what I wanted in life. I tried to going to the counseling center at Texas State. My grandfather By the time, I realized I could still bring my grades up, it was too late in the year and though I did passed my finals, I still did not do well enough to get a 2.0 or at least improve my GPA. He died just before the second semester started, and I was distracted mentally because of his sudden death. Since I have put myself in this predicament, it is up to me to get myself out of it. I do not have anyone to blame for this but myself; I simply have not been doing as well as I could be. One of the reasons I must stay in college is to further my education and have something to be proud of a degree. If I am not given another opportunity to improve academically, I am positive I will not be able to live as successfully as I would have been able to with a college education. I will reorganize my priorities to make school the most important; I need to do everything possible to make the grades I need. I am no longer in denial that I need help. I plan to go to the Student Learning Assistance Center for help when I struggle with assignments and when I need to perfect a certain subject matter. I will go to the SLAC with an open mind and realize that there are people who are willing to help others like me who are struggling with classes. In addition, I will find class tutors and join study groups that will assist me in learning material for the specific classes in which I will be taking. Also, I will no longer ignore extra credit assignments teachers' offer, I will begin taking advantage of chances to improve my grade. I believe that I can truly do well in school. Maybe it had to come to this academic suspension to realize that I need to rid myself of mixed feelings about school. I assure you, I am going to do the best I can and pass all my classes because I am not willing to risk the chances of no longer being able to attend Texas State. I plan to retake the three classes I failed within the next two semesters. If I am able to, I will take two of the three classes during the Fall Semester. Since writing essays seems to be one of the reasons why I failed English, I will use the Writing Center to help me improve my essays and improve my ability on analytical essays. Enclosed is my possible current schedule I have registered for and the changes I plan on making for both the fall and spring semester. Also enclosed is a letter and an obituary from my grandfather’s death. Thank you for your time. Open Question: Why is our relationship this way?

Me and my ex,now where together for almost 2 years and we just have things like his parents not liking me, well they are not polite or outgoing with me. He, my ex, one day really liked me alot and the he would be hyper critical of me. His mom demans alot from him and he actually does not know if his dad is his real dad, though his dad is mexican. He could be one of those really rare people who are mixed and you can not tell so I think this bothers him, alot. Also he does oxycodine, and a drug from south east asia call cretum alot. He also drink at the bars with his freinds alot, though heonly has about 4 freinds. He has had times when he is very affectionate, sweet, kind and others when he is remote and can not remember things well and says he is high......or he is just really selfish, like what put a fork in it was him not keeping his word. He would not call like he said etc. But he is getting his master, the application process so he has been busy. Also we went on two vacations together, one was alone though when his one freind who is mexican came along he would completely disrespect me in front of him, annoy me by ragging on me about being Albanian.....or asking if I would sleep with some creepy guy for money, like he is in high school or something. When we are together we talk about his education and mine, and travelling and our experences and music and culture and our pets. It is like he has two personalities. He forgets when to call ne or when to meet me somwhere..One time we had planned on living together and i was will to pay 250 out ofteh 900 dollar mortage he was putting on his new house and he forgot that the nigh before he had said we ar egoing to meet at 1o at out reguilat spot. I call him to say if he is coming and he says 'what?',,,then he says oh I was really drunk last night and that is when we agreed to move in together, once and for all. So he takes the 250 that night and I am kinda nervous because I am agreeing to live with someone who forgot our whole previous conversation about us living together, He does some weird thing with acting like he is about to hug me and then walks away, with the money. One week from when we were going to move in he, says a woman wants to rent all three rooms and we can not stay there. He recently said comment about getting his phone for his house hooked up, I did not even ask him if he was moving into his house he is buying....We drove by it, the house, he showed me the paper work and he really had the money for the down payment but the plans feel through. He likes to dangle hope in front of me and then laugh in my face. How can I be soo foolish to be used,,,,this is the second relationship to end like this. One thing though, the last two guys I have had this issue with, could not get fully erect, often this happen..why?  more

Open Question: Can I make it to a D1AA or D1A i think its D1 football team?

Ok people hear is my story Ive been flying under the radar for a while now and I think I can open up some coaches eyes at the next level. I started my junior and senior year in high school as WR/TE. The reason for TE is because our team converted to a closed offense with wing backs and with no receivers. At this position I caught 5 balls for 99 yards the whole season which is not bad in our 90 run/10 pass. The outstanding stat was that i averaged (22.5 yards after the catch.) I played my whole senior season on a gimpy hamstring which bothered me throughout. No i didnt send my highlight tape to any coahes after the season because I felt slow the reason being my hamstring. issue. My one step and go off the line kills the opposing teams at times. Route running is ok not solid Ability to beat jams is ok at times. Catching the ball is good but could be better in clutch catches/ So pretty much Im an average receiver that stands at 6'1 and weighs in at 190 pounds. I believe I can work on all my negatives and turn them into positives by the time spring comes in 2011. Ive been hitting the weight room since May so and Im making good progress. Ofcourse the plan is to walk on and tryout but I dont knw if I have a fair chance. Physical Attributes: Bench: 225 (1) Squat: 325 (5) Power cleans: 185 (5) started doing power cleans my senior. Short Shuttle: 4.49 Vert: 30.5 inches Broad Jump: 9'0 FT 40: 4.58s It just seems like I need a little more work then Im there you know? I am very determined and its all I think about a chance to play at the college level. First Team: 7 freshmen WR Second Team 5 Freshmen WR Ya those are the two teams I wanna tryout for, ya I knw im out numbered but I dont care. All the other teams in my state including D2 and D3 have about 10-11 WR on the squad thats crazy. Ya im still looking out of state but cant afford it. Anyway I just wanna know your honest opinion on do you think I can make it to D1AA or D1A football. I just think that I played in the wrong offense but thats another story to talk about. Till this day ive been working out 5 days a week. I even quit my job because im so determined. Dont get me wrong im a smart kid averaged a 3.55 in highschool, and I already knw what I want to study in college education is my first priority and football is second jus for my goals right now. BUT ANYWAY WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK SORRY IT WAS SO LONG, BE AS CRITICAL AS YOU FEEL YOU NEED TO BE, NO FEELINGS HURT HERE CUZ I USE THEM AS FUEL.  more

Open Question: Does my mom resent me or something?

I've been feeling like she does for a few years. I went to an academically intensive private school and did so well I literally could have gone to any college I wanted, and got into every one I applied to. I went to the university that my mom wanted me to go to instead of the one I wanted to go to. It's still a great school (it's a baby ivy, and I didn't want to go to an ivy anyway), and I like it for the most part. Lately she keeps inserting random little jabs about my education in conversations. Like she'll be like "well YOU would know with all your science classes" when it's something remotely related and I haven't even said anything. I never claim to know anything about fixing anything around the house and certainly would not offer advice or an opinion - I stick to test tubes and microorganisms, thanks. My classes are hardly applicable to everyday life. She'll also start on a rant about how she wishes she continued on with her education and accuses me of taking over her life. I'm the freaking second born and she was 36 when I was planned and born. Whenever I do anything I'm proud of, she criticizes me until I feel awfully about myself. I worked really hard on a memorial video for my dad who died of cancer this summer as my breaks from working and studying for her because she said she'd like one like I did when my dog died. She said "those pictures aren't all in exact chronological order. And I hate the song." Incidentally, she had picked the song a month ago. She accuses me randomly of having weird psychological problems. I assure you I really do not, and have even gone in for therapy to appease her. They informed me I am one of the most easy mannered, well-balanced people they've met. I've been trying to ignore it, figuring she's stressed right now and all. However, it's kind of hard to ignore when she bites my head of for things I have nothing to do with (ie. my dad's retirement account or whatever the heck it is) and turns around and bends over backwards for my rather lazy and obnoxious sibling. What would cause someone to randomly start disliking their child? I've even asked her what I did wrong and then she screams at me for asking. Should I just plan on moving far, far away for medical school?  more

Open Question: My son wants to be a high school history teacher. I have been?

informed that history teachers aren't in demand. He's talking about having History be his major and his minor be Technology. He has finished his first year of college. Please, someone who is knowledgeable tell me how he can make himself become more employable then the others trying in this same field. Some people have said he should major in Special Education or English and have his major be in History to get his foot in the door. He continues to state that he wants to major in History and minor in Technology. Is his choice a wise one? What would be the optimal choice for him, yet have him stay with his interests. He says he doesn't want to work all his life doing something he doesn't like, so he is adamant about staying with his plan. That's all well and good, but he's going to have to work to survive somehow if he can't get a teaching job.  more

Open Question: Do Probation Officers have to come to IEP meetings?

I am 18 still in High School, but is in Special Education. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, I now hold the rights to my education. However about a month ago I felt that it was inappropriate that the probation officers of Los Angeles County came to the meeting. I had nothing against them but, The team that set up my IEP was agreeing with me that I should be sent to a regular high school, however one probation officer was trying to go his way undermining my rights but also the decision of the IEP. The Alternative High School's Principal agreed with me on the issue that I should not return considering that the services provided on his campus were not enough to keep there and also the reason for being sent to an Alternative High School were ILLEGAL! The School's Psychologist agreed with my decision on returning to the normal high school under an IEP. Representatives of the school district were sort of disagreeing but gave me the okay to proceed with the process of me continuing in a normal high school But the real question comes down to this. In the next IEP, where we will discuss my plans on the Fall and Spring Semesters, I wish to have none of the probation officers there, since they are more focus on discipline rather than me having a proper education with the needs of my IEP fulfilled. According to the probation officer, I might follow the wrong crowd. However I am now 18 years and obviously I can chose my own friends wisely. I am sure he wants to get his way and not respect the decision of the team setting this up. Justmeinthisworld I would like to say thank you but I was placed illegally not because of probation but because the district believed that I was a Special Day Student, which I am not. My older IEP said was to be at a normal high school at least 96 % of percent of the time taking general education classes with frequent visits from the psychologist. Probation officers can go with their way. In fact the IEP is considered a legal document which must fulfill. justmeinthisworld I am sure you are human but this was just a simple mistake, what he did is undermining the decisions of the district and also the team. In an IEP everyone is an equal member and he can't influence anybody when the decision is 5 against 1. Second it is my IEP not his and definitely it is to serve my interest. Second this Alternative High School does not meet the requirement. Second they did not even meet in CST discussing the move. That is why it is illegal. Third you must not judge. I go to school everyday. No reason to be in Probation, I attend classes that other kids in probation do not have. I attend Calculus AB, Physics, and US History AP. Also if you want the 10 points, do not judge otherwise leave this question alone.  more

Open Question: Repeating a Class in college?

Hi, I took a class at my community college at got a F because I forgot to drop it, but I recently retook it and recieved a A. So my question is with the F be completely wiped from my records, as in it will not show up on my transcript? Or will it still be there, but not count towards my gpa. Here is the policy: "Look at your unofficial transcript and circle any "F's" and "D's". Deciding which courses to repeat is a complex decision. To determine if you need to repeat them use the following guidelines: (1) Plan to repeat English courses preparing you for Ewrt 1A or ESL 5 as soon as possible (2) Repeat courses that you failed which can be used to meet general education and major requirements. The advantage in repeating courses which you received a "D" or "F" is the replacement of those grades with the new grades. Also, you may now repeat a course for the 3rd time as well as retake the same course in which you have withdrawn from 4 times. You will need to see a counselor to complete the permission form to repeat a course for the 3rd time. Meet with a counselor or academic advisor to determine whether you need to repeat courses where you received a "D" or "F." On your Worksheet, write down the courses you plan to repeat." Open Question: Advice for changing careers?

I'm 26 years old. For the past 5 years, I have been working as an employee in non-profit health & human services organizations, providing social work services to diverse individuals in Philadelphia. I decided this was not for me -- I chose to enroll in an evening graduate program for my Masters in Education/Special Education. I love children, but have more of a passion creating workshops and providing training to staff in this job field than teaching a classroom. I have only been enrolled in the program for 1 semester and was laid off from my job. During this time, I've done a lot of "soul searching." I am still interested in non-profits, educational sectors and am seeking a position providing trainings, administrative/human resources duties. I have decided a degree in Organizational Leadership and Development (w/a focus in organizational psychology) better suits my career goals. I am in the process of job searching and have little background in this area. I plan to finish my current Education course and switch programs at the same university in Aug. Unemployed for 2 months, I want to show I have been productive. On my resume, I have listed the university and my expected graduation date. Should I still list the Masters of Education program? List the Organizational Leadership (although I have not technically switched yet)? List simply "Masters of Science degree"? Or am I better off omitting this altogether?  more

Resolved Question: Did you know that Republicans want to introduce a mandatory 30% tax rate?

This bill would repeal income tax, but add a 30% tax rate on top of what we already pay for goods. Another bill that benefits the rich. The Republicans never disappoint, do they? This is the type of unfair legislation that you are looking at if you vote Republican in November. Working and middle class Americans do not have a 30% tax rate right now, especially with medical and education deductions. We've already managed to turn this country into a plutocracy by giving corporations too much control. This would just drive the individual and family further into the dirt. If you are planning on voting Republican, redo your budget based on these specs, and tell me if you make more or less money. This bill actually decreased the amount I make by 5%. http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-s296/show Before answering, please open up Excel and do some math. There is a bare minimum that most of us working people have to buy, and that 30% makes up a much larger portion of our income. Rich people may consume more, but that 30% added on (which is much like the VAT) is a much lower percentage of their overall income; thus, poorer people end up paying more on a percentage basis. While my taxes were lower last year, I still owed a great deal of money. I don't know why Republicans always claim that liberals don't pay taxes. Why do some Republicans compare Obama's policies to Europe and call them "socialist" policies, but still use it as a selling point for their own policies? The Fair Tax = 30% tax rate HAS ANYONE HERE ACTUALLY DONE THE MATH OR AM I THE ONLY ONE!?  more

Open Question: what and how to create a lesson plan?

I am currently an Early Childhood Education student and for some reason I cannot grasp the concept of creating lesson plans; I've been interviewing for jobs and I know this is what has been doing me under. The thing is I didn't attend school here in the United States so schooling is quite different than it is here and I am completely perplexed by the entire process. I am quite certain I am making it more different than what it really is, therefore are there any suggestions or resources to aide me in the ability to understand this better?  more

Open Question: moving to sweden advice?

I would just like some advice / objective opinions. My partner (husband) is swedish and we are planning to move to sweden from the UK. We have a one 1 year old and 5 year old daughter. I am aware that it is not easy for expats to get work and I am learning basic swedish from my hubby now. Also I plan to do a swedish course when we go there. My concern is my daughter who is 5. She does not know the swedish language as yet, but I'm hoping she will learn it quickly and be able to integrate into nursery / school etc. My youngest daughter I think will be ok, because by school time she will be able to speak Swedish. Also, I will probably have to rely on my hubby financially for a bit so I guess it will be a little tough financially. I want to work and will be leaving a pretty good job, but I'm hoping that eventually I will get work. I am also concerned because my 5 year old and my mum (nanny) are very close and I know it would be hard for my little one to be away from her nanny, cause she see's her every week. I have thought about it alot, and feel that it would be good for us as a family, and that after a fashion my kids would adjust. What do you think? has anyone experienced this? Does anyone know how much it costs to move there? the best way to move there? who I contact concerning my daughters education etc? My hubby is enquiring also, but for my own piece of my mind, I thought I would gage some opinions. I have a 1st class arts degree and wondered if there are possibilities of being self employed maybe? All in all I'd like some honest opinions... thankyou  more

Open Question: Should I do this....?

Hello everyone, I want to know the answer to a question that my mind tells me no too, but my heart tells me YES YES! Since I have been very young, I have had one passion...Travel. Everything else eventually bores me.. The plan to have a family, have kids, and remain in a place for more then a week makes me sick. I want to live my life on the edge, so heres my question. At the age of 16 ( Young I know ) should i save up money to roam the world, all of it, not the big cities, but the african savanna, the olive farms in Italy, the giant pillar in China, the japanese rice farms, I just wanna travel on foot, and see the world. Heres the problem, it would make my parents sick, i would only have a high school education, and wouldn't follow my parents plan of me becoming a doctor, and make nice cash, but ive been thinking about this for ages! Btw if you say yes, please tell me how much money i should bring...I know ill run out, and im willing to work, but for the initial start how much is good? Note id plan to leave my next visit to Italy and go south to Morocco, also Im trilingual, I speak Italian as my first language, english as second, french studying it atm, and can read spanish.  more

Open Question: What more can a veteran do before the VA digs a deeper grave?

I am a US Marine Corps veteran having served in both OIF and OEF. I am currently a full time student and because finishing my education is my priority, I also don't work. As a full time student I rate 100% of Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits. My first semester back in college was in the Fall of 2009. During that term, a very good friend of mine (also a veteran) was killed in a motorcycle accident. As if my first semester being back in school in five years wasn't tough enough I faced a few other personal issues. As a result, I did end up failing one class. As I continued school as a full time student in the Spring 2010 term, I received a letter stating that because of my failed class I was in debt to the VA. Fine, I understand that. However, I was told I had 60 days to reply and set up a payment plan to repay my debt if I was not able to pay it back in full. Within 2 weeks (obviously NOT 60 days) I received a letter stating that my debt has been reduced by X amout of dollars....funny, X amount was also the same amount for my BAH. When the first of the following month came along, I received no BAH....THEY WITHHELD MY BENEFITS TO REPAY MY DEBT WITHOUT GIVING ME THE SAID TIME TO REPLY!!!! I had already mailed in the proper forms to set up a repayment plan, they obviously had not received it. A few weeks later, I get another letter stating that my debt has been reduced by X amount of dollars...yes, my BAH amount again! Again, the first of the following month passed, again, they withheld my benefits. Two days later I get a letter stating that I owe a certain amount left on my debt and that they (the VA) has been trying to contact me...obviously, they STILL had NOT received my paperwork. At this point, I have not been able to pay a single bill, including rent, for two months. A few days later (after trying to contact the VA debt management center) I got a letter stating they received my forms and that a $150 installment per month was acceptable to repay my debt, and that I would begin to receive benefits again at the start of the following month (July 2010). It is now the 11th of July. I have received no money. I have written VetReps twice, written my local Congressman, and went to the local VA office (who had no idea why this had happened). Three months, three months no income, three months, of overdue bills, my credit score is plummeting, I am in debt, and I'm having to vacate my current residence. I am still a full time student even through the summer. I received a letter today from the VA stating, "We have not received the $150 from the payment plan that you had submitted." Yeah, NO SHIT! YOU HAVE NOT PAID ME PERIOD FOR THREE MONTHS!!!!!!! YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DEDUCT THAT $150 FROM MY BAH.....OH WAIT....YOU'RE NOT PAYING ME BAH FOR SOME GOD AWFUL REASON!!!!! Does anyone have any advice here??? I don't know what else to do. If five years ago, if I had known I was going to be in the position I am in right now....would I still have signed my name on that line??? It's crazy, but you bet your ass I would. Veteran's aren't asking for a handout here, we just want what was offered to us. It's been a real tough three months, in terms of credit and debt, its gonna take me a while to get out of this one...and it sucks even more that it is not my fault. Please help, advice anyting, thank you. CDG USMC 2005-2009 I have gone to the local VA office, they had no answer for me.  more

Open Question: Better to double major or double minor?

I'll be starting college in the fall, but my orientation date is set pretty late and as yet I have not been assigned an academic adviser. So I figured I would come to Y!A for a little insight and advice. I am planning to major in English and minor in a foreign language (I'm not sure which one yet). Both of these programs also provide a secondary education certification. Obviously, I want to be a teacher. I always have. I recently discovered that the school I'll be attending has an Environmental Sciences department. Now, If I chose to study this, it would be purely out of interest--not because I'm looking for a career in this field. Would it be better to simply minor in Environmental Science in addition to the minor I've already chosen, or should I tack it on as a major (with the accompanying minor in biology, chemistry, or geology) just in case a career in education doesn't work out for me? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!  more

Open Question: Which of these has a better scope?

Does a networking and hardware engineer have a better scope or a programmer (basic programmer). Just need a general idea and if you know about any CAT education ... this is one of the institutes in Mumbai that offer MDCHN (Masters in Diploma of Computer hardware and networking ) and I think the website is www.cateducation.org ............ I have two options either do a MDCHN or a programming course MDCHN involves : Fundamentals of computer such as DOS, internet surfing Hardware A+ (that is PC hardware support , optical storage device) Assembly and Trouble Shooting , Wireless Networking Networking N+, MCSE, Windows security, CCNA, CCNP, Linux , Laptop Repairing, Security Certified Ethical Hacking, CSSA (NGX), ASS, IT Infrastructure, Project Management Planning Programming Course involves: Fundamentals of computer (MS Office) Tally and Financial Accounting HTML and DHTML applications C and C++ Core Java RDBMS, C# VB.Net and ASP.Net I would say a mix and match from both these course would be AWESOME but that is not possible. Open Question: i want to learn higher english from home?

i am currently studying childcare at a college in scotland. I wish to eventually become a primary school teacher. Unfortunately during high school i did not apply myself as well i i could have. I regret not furthering my education then, but whats done is done. What i need to know is, What university would allow me to study higher english at home and then do an exam and gain the same qualification i would have at school. I plan to do this at the same time as my college course because i know very well i am capable of both. English higher is a scottish qualification so i guess it would have to be a scottish uni that provides the course. Any help or advice is appreciated. Also my college does not run higher english.  more

Open Question: How can I afford to live on my own?

I'm 19 years old and I am a live-in nanny in Arizona, but lately I've been very homesick for the Washington DC area (I spent the first 13 years of my life there). I know that I'm going to have to find my own place to live eventually, but I'm worried that I won't be able to afford it. Right now, I make less than $250 a week after taxes for a 50 hour work week. I have to pay for a portion of my school (including the cost of textbooks), my phone bill (about $70 a month for everything), and then there are things like my scheduled vacation back to New Jersey, and then little day-to-day expenses. I'm worried that I'm not going to be able to afford to live on my own. I'm trying to save up for a car, which means I'll have to start paying for car insurance. I'll also have to start covering my own doctor's costs (my parents pay for everything now). I'm not too worried about health insurance since I'm an education major and I should be able to get coverage through work (and as long as I'm a full time student I can stay on my parents' plan for a few more years). I'm planning on just using my cell phone, and I need internet access (especially since I do all my schoolwork online), but cable isn't needed. I'm also going to have to buy my own groceries and pay for things like my contacts and glasses (which are a lot more expensive now that I'm 19 and can't get the children's price). So between apartment rental, a car (I know I can deal with not having one, but I also know that public transportation isn't always practical, and in some cases it's not available), any extra utilities (phone bill, internet, paying for the laundromat, etc), groceries, health expenses, and extras I'm not going to be able to afford that with the salary I make now. (A month's rental at a 1 bedroom apartment in Alexandria, VA is more than I make in a month). And on top of that, I'm going to have to try to make ends meet while doing my student teaching in a couple years. Does anyone else have any suggestions other than finding a second job and working evenings and weekends? (I've been applying to work at places, but so far nothing is coming up). Nowadays $70 a month for a phone bill is one of the less expensive options, especially for what I am getting out of it. And I would get another job, but I can't afford it. This job also provides me with room and board. If I quit I won't have a place to stay.  more

Open Question: How to deal with my father?

I'm posting under a fake name here. I'm having problems with my father and I don't know what to do. He hasn't been in my life for a few years, so we're not close. It is quite awkward when we're together, and we barely talk. (my parents were not separated/divorced, he just worked in a different country while we lived in another) Now we moved to the country where my dad is working to be together. Although he is a workaholic and we would not have the financial freedom that we do without his hard work, he has failed in his role as a father and husband as he's never been there for his children (and arguably his wife too). My father is close-minded and traditional and feels if a man brings home money he is free to do whatever he feels like. He comes home, plops down on the couch, and does nothing all night, saying that he's tired from work. But when one of his friends calls him up, he is willing to jump up, run through the door and go out drinking. He also assumes he is the most stressed / worked in the family. Maybe he is the most worked one in the family and I may never know, but he diminishes all of us by assuming that he is the most stressed / worked one in the family and assumes that I lead a stress-less life. My mother has a job of her own and has to clean the whole house/ make dinner/ and take care of us kids all by herself. She never goes out with her friends. He goes out to drink multiple times a week with friends, which I am completely okay with, as being very busy, he needs relief from stress. But it feels as if his family is second to all his friends (most of which, in my opinion, do not care about their family at all and only provide financially to their families). We can be in the same house and we'd only exchange two sentences the whole evening. When we do speak though he nags me about school/ college/ my future/ my boyfriend. There's more things he nags me with, such as getting a job (I would, but I am very very busy, going through a rather tough academic program, which he put me in in order to get me in a better university) When he talks about university, he's not flexible at all. I want to go to college back in my own home country, but he is stubborn about it and wants me to go to university here. Even the further education counselor said I'd be more suitable going to university there. He judges my boyfriend based on racial stereotypes. He thinks that my boyfriend's "kind" will take advantage of me. He also says that I am too young to date (I am 16 and I have proven myself to be intelligent enough to not be taken advantage of, nor does it interfere with my studies). The most ridiculous thing is his saying that I cannot marry my boyfriend's 'kind'. (I don't plan on marrying my boyfriend, but my father's saying that was the most offensive thing in the world to me, as he's so close minded, traditional and controlling) His judging of my boyfriend is offensive because he's only met him once and that time he barely made an effort to get to know him. My boyfriend is really a decent person who behaves respectfully to my parents and to me, so I find it extremely offensive that he is looked at in this light. I've tried being the good daughter. I'm tired of appeasing him. I want him to know that what he's doing is selfish and hurts the whole family. Is it that he's influenced by his friends? How do I deal with him? Who do I talk to? (I may start by talking to my mother, do you think it's a good idea?) I'm sorry this was long but I felt like it needed that much to fully tell you what I'm going through.  more

Open Question: What is a good engineering college for me?

I am really unsure of what college I should go to. I am not sure how grade point works exactly, but I just finished my sophomore year. In Freshman year I had 6 classes (12 credits), and all credits were A's. In Sophomore year I had 7 classes (14 credits), but 3 of those credits were A-'s, (I'm not sure if percent matters, but all were over 93.5). My best score on the ACT so far is a 29, but I am planning on retaking it a few more times to get that score higher. I am going to be taking Calculus I and II next year at a nearby college, and by the time I graduate I will have taken 2 to 3 AP courses. What are some colleges I could get into for Engineering with my grades and classes? Second, is it okay to somewhat base my college off of a hobby? I would like to go to a college where I could learn Japanese for fun, and I would also want the weather to be nice so I could play soccer. I'm not sure if trying to get into a college based on that would get in the way of my actual engineering education, because that is much more important. I want to make sure I still get a good education, so should I not worry about those hobbies, and just pursue them after college, or should I try to find all of those things in one college? Thanks for any help, I am just trying to think of colleges because people always tell me to think early, and I would like a few examples to look at getting in with my grades.  more

Open Question: What are some tips for moving to the DC area?

I am 19 years old, an early childhood education major (planning on teaching preschool) and I live in Arizona as a live-in housekeeper. My parents and younger sister (15) live in Northern New Jersey... about half an hour from New York City (depending on traffic). However, I spent the first thirteen years of my life living in Alexandria, VA, right near the Arlington, VA border. Lately, I've been a little homesick for the east, and as much as I've wanted to settle here in the west (in Colorado... not Arizona), I'm not sure I can deal with being so far away from NYC and DC. The more I think about it, the more I'd love to be able to move back to my old neighborhood... heck my old APARTMENT complex would be great. It just seems to be more ideal than living 2,000+ miles away from everything. If I have a long weekend I can drive up to New Jersey to see friends or go into the city (NYC). (It's not that bad of a drive. I used to go to the orthodontist in VA even after I moved to NJ). So, do you have any tips for moving into the area? I know I've lived there before, but I was only 13 when I left and a lot of my memories of living there were just really crappy ones related to school. I don't remember much else, and I'm not very educated about major issues of living/working in DC. If I move to the area I'd probably live in Alexandria, VA  more

Open Question: No other nation would tolerate a neighbor like Mexico, why should the U.S.?

Do you agree with this? Do you agree with "Most Americans are not criminals but all illegals are"? Should Mexico be tolerated or cut off? The Quagmire of Illegal Immigration: Another Liberal Disaster By John Lillpop Saturday, July 10, 2010 Those who have even the slightest interest in preserving American values and culture have no choice but to be incensed that the Mexican government does not respect U.S. sovereignty, borders, or immigration laws. Even more maddening is the fact that our own government, comprised of elected officials who have sworn under oath to protect and defend America, have joined hands with the foreign nation of Mexico in opposing the right of Arizona to protect its citzens from invading criminals. Indeed, wrong-minded liberals such as President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and all politicians bound by the D brand, defend illegal aliens as goodhearted, hardworking folks who come to America because they share our values and come simply in search of a better life. It is even suggested that the invaders are a “blessing” to America. In truth, however, illegal aliens do not invade the U.S. to work or because they share common values. They come to steal public services—education, health care and the like—to which they are not entitled, and which cost U.S. taxpayers at least $113 billion dollars a year. As to common values, most Americans are NOT criminals—all illegal aliens are. Most Americans speak English—most illegal aliens refuse to learn the American language. In addition, many illegal aliens are delusional enough to believe that parts of the U.S. still belong to Mexico. They come not to share in the “American Dream,” but to reclaim property that they naively believe to be part of Mexico. As everyone knows, the Mexican government bitterly opposes efforts to stem the flow of illegal aliens from Mexico into America. That government has even threatened to take the United States to the UN because we Americans have plans to build a fence at the border. A fence that would be built by Americans on American soil using American money! However, when it comes to illegal aliens going into Mexico from countries south of its border, the Mexican government has absolutely zero tolerance. No driver’s licenses, in-state tuition, or any of the other nonsense that American politicians foolishly bestow on Mexicans here illegally. Fact is, illegal aliens in Mexico are regarded as felons by the government, treated accordingly, and are deported as quickly as possible. America officials should do the same to the scores millions of aliens here illegally. To claim that America is somehow “blessed” to have a third-world neighbor that dumps millions of criminals on the backs of U.S. taxpayers is outrageous, irresponsible, and foolish No other nation on earth would tolerate a “neighbor” like Mexico—and neither should America! http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/25210  more

Open Question: I wrote an article. please check on it!?

"With my efforts and my parents and teachers' support, I'm sanguine of attaining an admission from a superior university in America," says Hyerin Han from the global class, who contemplates going to America for a better college education. Yes, in the global class, anyone who has a strong will and supporting parents may attain one's goal, abiding by the teachers' instructions. If you don't believe, you can also ascertain it in the example of Chunhoo Jeon, one of the graduates from the global class 2009. Chunhoo Jeon was an ordinary student who had never lived in the USA, and was not very good at English until he was a middle school student. However, he got an admission from USC, which is one of the top schools in America, this year. A lot of people asked how he got into USC, and this was his answer, "I just believed and obeyed the studying-abroad preparation curriculum offered by the school, and I made every effort to get good grades." Studying-abroad Preparation Curriculum The studying-abroad preparation curriculum offers students who plan to study abroad to America six more hours of English education a week than general classes , 13 hours in total. And for students who plan to study abroad to Japan, it provides 11 hours of Japanese education a week. All of the foreign language lessons are given by native language speakers except for the General English class. Also, students can take extra classes such as TOEFL and SAT after school. The curriculum also offers Samulnori(the Korean traditional percussion quartet) class to stir up students' interest in the Korean cultural heritage. Other than these, there are a lot of things the curriculum offers. The Students Some people say "studying abroad equals runaway," but it is never true. Students have to make a lot more endeavors to get into a foreign university than to enter a university in Korea. Students planning to enter American universities need SAT score, TOEFL score, GPA, and also extra curricular activities. Also, students planning to enter Japanese universities need JLPT score, EJU score, TOEFL score, and they have to prepare for college entrance exams conducted by each college. Consequently, students from the global class are usually earnest. It is not awkward to find the students studying during a break or till 4 a.m.. Resolved Question: So Much I Want To Say, So Little I Can Say?

I'm turning seventeen on September 30th, and yet something keeps bothering me; what will I say to a girl I have known for a long time, who is supposed to be dying in the next few years of her life? Her name is Katarina Hartzer, and we went to kindergarten together, along with other friends we grew up with. Katarina, and myself went to school together for twelve years along with most of the people we went to kindergarten with up until eighth grade, and then my parents said I would be going to a different high school then the rest of them. You see, in seventh grade, Katarina went to France, and contracted a disease, that made her very sick, and so they replaced her heart with an artificial heart, and she is only gonna live till the age of twenty! I'm not sure if she likes me or is fond of me, but we go way back, and I plan to say goodbye to her one last time, before we graduate to high school. We are entering our Junior year, and I have a "Facebook" account, where I have kept in touch with all of my friends throughout the school years. Katarina knows she will most likely live a short life, but I'm gonna surprise her, and on the last week of school, of our senior year, I'm gonna show up, and say goodbye one last time! I'm not sure what I will say, but I want to make it memorable to her, for however long she DOES live, please give me some ideas, I need help figuring out what my last words to her may be. Thank you! My name is Bobby Ford, so you can call me Bobby, and I'm NOT a girl! Thanx again! My parents don't seem to wanna let me go to that school, because my I.E.P (Independent Education Plan) doesn't fit the support of the school she's at. But I don't care, my parents say if I make good grades, I can make a steady transition either way, so I'm gonna make the best damn grades I can! YES, I copied this question, but seriously, I need some ideas!  more

Right now I have no idea what my chances are, so any criticism, positive or negative, is welcome. If you have something bad to say, say it please. It will help me improve my chances.
