Literacy In China Questions and Answers

Voting Question: What is driving the worldwide revival going on right now?

First the disclaimer: I'm not a practicing anything, though I do consider myself spiritual in the sense that I try to keep an open mind and just admit to myself that I just don't know enough one way or another to commit to any one defined way or looking at the world and existence. My spirituality I find mostly in nature. So my question. A friend of mine whose Dad travels alot during the summer setting up literacy centers all over the world as a joint effort by U.S. universities ( He's a PHD at Davis in Sacramento ) told us that there is a gigantic revival going on in many places around the world. South America, China, The Pacific Rim, Africa, and even some of the Muslim nations like, interestingly enough, Iraq, are seeing explosive growth despite repressive governments. The gatherings range anywhere from a dozen people in what they call a " house church " to a crowd I had to see his video of to believe where 1.4 million people were gathered in one place at one time. My first though was that these are developing nations and so more easily swayed, but on the other hand China is hardly just a developing nation, and neither is India...both of which are poised to overtake the United States in both technology and productivity in the next ten years or so. He says from what he can tell it's happening because they have moved beyond religion, dogma, or ceremonialism to a basic unstructured grassroots sort of worship that focuses on the words of Christ reduced to their most simple form. A former Muslim in Iraq said the problem with the west is religion is judged in accordance with it's abusers, so no wonder people are disillusioned. He goes on to say it has to be judged by the character and intent of it's founder, who was never interested in starting a religion in the first place. Anyway it's fascinating. Thoughts?  more

Resolved Question: Why is American Christians threaten our science education?

Why is American Christians threaten our science education? There is no reason. The government edit out the acceptance of evolution, big bang from a poll of the National Science Foundation. According the article of Sciencemag . org: http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2010/04/evolution-big-bang-polls-omitted.html "A federal advisory committee omitted the data that Americans knowledge of evolution and the big bang. They are less likely to accept evolution and the big bag than rest parts of the world." "They're not surprising findings, but the National Science Board, which oversees the National Science Foundation (NSF), says it chose to leave the section out of the 2010 edition of the biennial Science and Engineering Indicators because the survey questions used to measure knowledge of the two topics force respondents to choose between factual knowledge and religious beliefs." "The deleted text, obtained by Science Insider, does not differ radically from what has appeared in previous Indicators. The section, which was part of the unedited chapter on public attitudes toward science and technology, notes that 45% of Americans in 2008 answered true to the statement, "Human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals." The figure is similar to previous years and much LOWER than in Japan (78%), Europe (70%), China (69%), and South Korea (64%). The same gap exists for the response to a second statement, "The universe began with a big explosion," with which only 33% of Americans agreed. " '' "I think that is a nonsensical response" that reflects "the religious rights's point of view," says Jon Miller, a science literacy researcher at Michigan State University in East Lansing '' '' "Evolution and the big bang are not a matter of opinion. If a person says that the earth really is at the center of the universe, even if scientists think it is not, how in the world would you call that person scientifically literate? Part of being literate is to both understand and accept scientific constructs." '' --- excerpts from the article. Why the government ignore this horrible report? They knew that American Christian conservatives are destory science. Read the article before you comment : http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2010/04/evolution-big-bang-polls-omitted.html I'm not American, What is Truth. Farmers in the ohio river vally gained the greatest economic benefits when the U.S acquired the Louisiana territory. early colonial efforts in self government included:the mayflower compact, new england town meetings, and the virginia house of Burgess. the main purpose for the writing for the declaration of independence was to state the colonists reasons for separating from great britain. declaring was is a constitutional power delegated specifically to the federal government. one of the key outcomes of the supreme court case of marbury v. madison was the principle of judicial review. a major reason the antifederalists opposed the ratification of the U.S constitution was because the constitution changed the balance of power between the state and national government. the louisiana purchase initially presented president jefferson with a dilemma because it violated his strict constructionist view of the constitution. by enacting jim crow laws many southern states tried to limit the effects of radical reconstruction. the mechanization of agriculture in the U.S led to an increase in U.S production. the missouri compromise of 1820 maintained a balance Between free slave states in the U.S. the seneca falls convention supported the movement for women's right in america. literacy tests and poll taxes were used often to limit voter participation by blacks in the south. a Congress up of senate and house of representatives resolved a disagreement at the 1787 constitutional convention over the virginia and new Jersey plans. the homestead act, the mass killing of buffalo, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad led to the becline of the plains indians. reserved power of the U.S constitution traditionally gives the states authority over public education. the Louisiana purchase was most important to the U.S because it secured control of the Mississippi river. in an attempt to warn european powers against intervening in lat America president monroe issued the monroe doctrine in 1823. horace mann is best remember for his support of public education in america. under the open door policy the government of china was encouraged to allow the U.S to do business in china. by the late 19th century critics of big business claimed that monopolies most harmed the economy by limiting competition. social darwinism helped to explain the differences in the u.s between the rich and poor. abolitionists in the pre civil was south supported he activities the underground railroad. the supreme court case dred scott v. sanford held create the need for a constitutional amendment that would grant citizenship to formerly enslaved persons. lincolns plan for reconstitution was opposed in congress because lincoln rejected harsh punishment for the south. regulation some aspects of big business were the main ideas behind he 1887 interstate commerce act the 1890 sherman anti-trust act. inhis pamphlet common sense, thomas paine ardues that the conlonists should end their their political relationship with great britain.  more

Resolved Question: I've got to know....how is "Christianity" and "evolution" even remotely compatible?

Don't get me wrong....I'm glad that many Christians are recognizing that modern biology (study of life and its development....i.e. evolution) is a GREAT thing and is helping our advancement. But I can't help but wonder, how can they say that the two are compatible? Evolutionary biologists believe that the first modern humans (god's so called "children") appeared at least 100,000 years ago (up to 200,000). Think about what life would have been like for them! They were left to fight for their lives in a harsh environment of constant disease and predators. The extreme climate, the wars and battles, the accidents, etc; the average life expectancy of a human would not be too much more than 25 years. So, having witnessed the brutality and struggle for 98,000 years, the Christian god then decides that they should intervene and help humans, by impregnating a Jewish virgin, who gives birth to none other than god's "son". He then grows up and preaches forgiveness and love and morality, and he performs various miracles. But in order to "save" humanity (why?) he is killed by means of the most ugly, stupid, grotesque savagery: a crucifixion. And this absolutely MUST take place in an illiterate barbaric part of Palestine? Instead of a place like China, where they had more technology and sophistication. They had better developed language and higher literacy rates...corruptions of translation and power struggles would've been more difficult with a people of better literacy, don't you think? Think about the mechanism of evolution known as natural selection. This selective force that results in varying degrees of reproductive success can be incredibly tame or incredibly savage. Animals that were too slow to outrun a cheetah would perish...but then again you can't have animals that run too fast; otherwise, cheetahs would not have any food and would not survive. I mean, they're all killing each other! It's brutal, disgusting, and cruel. The question is...how does this square up to (1) the idea of the Christian god being an all-powerful, all-perfect, intelligent, loving being; and (2) the Christian story about Jesus and his death and the reasons for his death?  more

Resolved Question: This government has spent record amounts of money on education. Why do they bother ?

Britain has some of the worst rates of numeracy and literacy in Europe. It is not lack of investment in Britain but the lack of the correct attitude. In countries like China children can be taught in classes of more than 100 because they DARE NOT MISBEHAVE. Children probably learn more in much poorer countries with little equipment because they have discipline drive and motivation. In countries like Chile if you arrive late for school you are sent home and your parents summoned and the parents dare not abuse the teacher in any way. Literacy rates in countries like Cuba are far higher than here. Britain has to compete with the world now. Surely we need a complete change of outlook ? fily.....i knows wot yer means. JOMAMO......hate to burst your bubble but it is true. Ask any University in this country about the state of freshers English grammar skills.  more

Resolved Question: A CHALLENGE for Christian apologists who believe in EVOLUTION! Is Christianity compatible with evolution?

Evolutionary biologists believe that the first modern humans (god's so called "children") appeared at least 100,000 years ago (up to 200,000). 1. Think about what life would have been like for them. They were left to fight for their lives in a harsh environment of constant disease and predators. The extreme climate, the wars and battles, the accidents, etc... the average life expectancy of a human would not be too much more than 25 years. 2. So.... having witnessed the brutality and struggle for 98,000 years, The Christian god then decides that they should intervene and help humans, by impregnating a Jewish virgin... who gives birth non other than god's "son". He then grows up and preaches forgiveness and love and morality... he performs various miracles.. but is also not free from sin for he was cast as partly mortal. 3. But in order to "save" humanity he is killed by means of the ugliest, stupid, grotesque, savagery of a crucifixion. And this has to take place in an illiterate barbaric part of Palestine? Instead of a place like China, where they had technology and sophistication.. they had highly developed language and literacy, so they would have been the most suited to spread the word of god. 4. Think about the mechanism of evolution known as natural selection. this selective force that results in varying degrees of reproductive success can be incredibly tame or incredibly savage... animals that were too slow to out run a cheetah would perish... but then again you cant have animals that run too fast otherwise cheetahs would not have any food and would not survive. Anyway I could go on.... The question is... how does this square up to the idea of the Christian god being: A) - All powerful and all perfect and intelligent and loveing etc...? B) - the Christian story about Jesus and his death and the reasons for his death. Face it! The notion that Christianity is compatible with evolution is starting to look rather absurd after this. And it makes your god look stupid and careless. So it seems that you Christians have to embrace some form of CREATIONISM, instead of evolution....Right? Check mate Evolutionary Apologists!  more

Resolved Question: Has morality in the United States finally gone extinct?

With the election of Obama, I feel as if the entire country has spiraled it's way into a cesspool illiteracy, ignorance, and immorality. It's now okay for mothers to kill babies, men to marry men, and Muslims to rule the country. The country that began as a few devout pilgrims searching for a place in which they could worship God freely now rejects His existence in its entirety, making it taboo to be discussed or even mentioned in schools or any other public place. Christmas break is "Winter break", BC is now "BCE", and Adam and Eve are now cave-dwelling monkeys in early Africa. As this has become more and more true, so has our rate of literacy declined. Education is a low priority and America's youth grows less intelligent and more belligerent by the day. The economy has been sucked dry and now will be shredded to bits by our wonderful new president who has already spent more during his presidency than our entire nation has in its whole history. Our great-great grandchildren will still be in debt to China. Will our nation ever be the same, or like Rome, have we come to the point of "bread and circuses", and will soon collapse entirely? Or will the Rapture occur before that? These are matters of dire moral concern. to "Love Canada": I do not receive "direction" in my life from our socialist president. This is exactly the kind of personality cult that formed around Hitler, Mao Zedong, and the like. But I'm glad that he is able to give you purpose in your existence. To those of you so ignorant that you do not even know what the Rapture is, here are just a few Bible verses confirming. See also: the ENTIRE book of Revelation. http://christianity.about.com/od/faqhelpdesk/a/whatisrapture_2.htm Miss "Yaya": A huge leap in spiritual evolution? By electing a half Muslim "Christian" whose pastor denounces and condemns America? Sounds like a huge leap to me. President Bush, on the other hand, may have made some mistakes, but he reads his Bible every night, and set a good example for people. The idea that homosexuality is going to "stimulate the economy" is so completely pointless that I'm not sure how to respond. The so called "American Indians" may have lived on the land prior to the British settlers; however, they did NOT contribute to the establishment of our nation and therefore have nothing to do with this discussion. Slavery ended nearly 200 years ago. That has NOTHING to do with this. Resolved Question: From West to East: A Transition of Power?

From West to East: A Transition of Power? It has been a long roller coaster ride for the world to take the path for economic recovery. Economists can't even tell a concrete duration when will the crisis ends. For past weeks, as the stock markets start to bounce back, currencies devalue the safe havens, US dollar and Japanese Yen, road to recovery is a common sentiment for all. Demand for commodities helps top exporting countries of commodities to gain back their losses. According to Bloomberg Television, it was on March 9, 2009 when the WORST day for the world economy reaches decade lows as plenty companies shut down their factories and plants to reduce expenses, this result to millions of people are losing their jobs around the world. "Developed World" is the undeniably the roots of this global fiasco, when the real state business in Wall Street headed to ground followed by the collapse of the Lehman Brothers in England in September 2008. It is a chain reaction, financial giants struggles which cause incipient countries to be affected. On the side of the eastern part of the globe, which most are still "DEVELOPING" , are also battered by this global economic downturn, however, it can be noted that there is at least lesser effect on them, except for Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore, - which until now is suffering from massive losses. There are speculations on the “transition of power” giving the throne to Asia. The idea starts when CHINA shows a rapid growth in their economy which is about 12.5%, compared to the western power which is 0 to 5% only. This gives analysts to project the world ranking by at least 20-50 years from now. If you do arithmetic, it shows that China will overcome today's economic giant -United States- which for now is almost three times larger than its runner up. -Japan. However, since the crisis began, developed countries experienced a negative growth, and a slowdown for emerging countries. There are two ways in computing the GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP), which made a long argument among economists, traders and analysts. 1. NOMINAL 2. PPP (purchasing power parity) However, nominal is the most commonly used for economists to make the ranking. The latter however is use in more technical comparison, since it includes the inflation rate, currency exchange and other vital information. For 2008, The ranking for the World's Top 15 LARGEST ECONOMY (GDP nominal) 1. United States 2. Japan 3. China 4. Germany 5. France 6. United Kingdom 7. Italy 8. Russia 9. Spain 10. Brazil 11. Canada 12. India 13. Mexico 14. Australia 15. South Korea We all know that GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is the sum of all goods, trades, products, investments, revenues of a country in a given time. It can be quarterly or annually. Above ranking is for year 2008. To determine the world's WEALTHIEST country, which I believe one of the standards to become "DEVELOPED COUNTRY" GDP will be divided by the total population. So for above the countries GDP 2008 will be divided by their total population on 2008(not only those who are in the workforce). The quotient will be their GDP per Capita. The quotient will then be assessed. If I am not mistaken, at least 25,000 should me met. Other standards include infrastructures, poverty rate, unemployment rate, political stability, well-regarded university, literacy rate, crime level, occurrence of natural disaster, sanitation and the likes. Comparison: Which do you think is wealthier? A country with total output of $1,000,000 with 1,000,000 people? Or a country with an output of $5,000 with 100 people? THAT'S IT! On recent news, however, China is regarded to save the world by years to come. While China is the 3rd largest economy in the world up-to-date, (surpassed Germany in late 2008), China remains a developing country, with low GDP per capita, high level of violation, and percentage of the population living below the poverty line. Outside Shanghai (its financial capital) and Beijing (country's capital) people are poor with lesser civilization. With its huge population, the country is one of the most densely populated that makes social issue beyond its border, and other contemporary issues towards its government, people, etc. (Ex. Bird Flu, and the Contamination of Milk) Hong Kong is an autonomous region of China. Trivia: China is one of the 1st or 2nd most populous countries in the world with at least 1.1 billion people making MANDARIN as the world's most spoken language than any ANGLOPHONE countries combined. (U.S, U.K, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines etc.). However, English remains to be the supreme language of intellect, making English to be the international language, especially for business, spoken even by Chinese. But it’s rare to see American or British to speak Mandarin, isn't it? While China is said on its road to be the world's superpower, lots of criticisms and justifiable words are  more

Resolved Question: why do some mainland chinese claim that china is the most developed asian nation?

by the most importantly used measures of a country's level of development, HDI, even used by the UN (of which china supports more than japan ironically): last time i checked japan's average income was about thirteen times that of china's, average life expectancy about a decade more than china, and average literacy rate almost 100% compared to china's 90%. by mainstream empirical measures japan is still the most developed major asian nation yet some chinese disagree. now i'm sure the psychology behind fervent chinese nationalist attitudes is the same as the one behind some fervent religions which i why i ask this question here. why does such a large proportion of mainland/people's republic of china society cling to an outdated version of nationalism that even most people in hong kong (which is now a part of china) disagree with?  more

Resolved Question: FOR CHRISTIANS & ATHEISTS? Let's get somthing straight! How can Christianity be compatible with evolution?

Evolutionary biologists believe that the first modern humans (god's so called "chidlren") appeared at least 100,000 years ago (up to 200,000). 4. Thnk about the mechanism of evolution known as natural selection. this selective force that results in varying degrees of reproductive success can be increadibly tame or incredibly savage... animals that were too slow to out run a cheetah would perish... but then again you cant have animals that run too fast otherwise cheetahs would not have any food and would not survive. Anyway I could go on.... The question is... how does this square up to the idea of the Christian god being: A) - All powerful and all perfect and intelligent and loveing etc... B) - the Christian story about Jesus and his death and the reasons for his death. Face it! The notion that Christianity is compatible with evolution is starting to look rather absurd after this. So it seems that you Christians have to embrace some form of creationism, instead of evolution.... What do you have to say to that?  more

Resolved Question: Would you let your 17 year old volunteer abroad if she was v responsible and already out of high school?

I'm graduating from high school in June, have already been accepted to my dream college, and won a fellowship for a gap year to travel and volunteer. The school I'll be attending allows you to defer enrollment for up to two years. I volunteer with an organization that teaches people to sing, play instruments (we donate them), literacy and life skills, and this morning I was asked if I'd like to go with them to China in August (three weeks), Northern Ireland in September (one month) and India in October-Nov (six weeks). The cost will be around $10,000 which I can pay for entirely on my own and I also have the funds for travel in between the trips. My primary concern is that my parents won't let me go. I skipped a grade when I was younger and don't turn 18 until the end of November. I've traveled extensively abroad and with this organization, but always with them or on a structured study abroad. You are technically supposed to be 18 or w a parent to go on these trips, but they said they could make an exception. I'm hoping to be able to get my boyfriend to with me, and he'll be 21 in September. I don't know if that will help make my parents feel more confident about the trip. Anyway, i'm going to talk with them about this over the weekend, and suggestions would be great. This is something I really need to do. thx in adv. I just wanted to clarify that my boyfriend is older, but he's actually only two grades ahead of me. He has a fall birthday (September 21) & started school later, and I skipped a grade. I turn 18 Nov. 28. He lived abroad for ten years and has gone on two Habitat for Humanity trips overseas, so that's why I thought having him come with would be seen as a perk, especially since I'd like to travel in between the missions. Thx for the answers thus far. : )  more

Resolved Question: What are the predominant ethnic and religious groups in China?

In my AP Environmental class we're doing a mock-debate on population control. My group is supposed to be representing China. I already have some good information on their 'one-child' policy aka family planning policy but I have a few other questions I cannot seem to find. One of which is: what are the predominant ethnic and religious groups in China? What is China's literacy rate? And what is their Educatin Policy? If you get your information from a website please provide a link. All help is appreciated, thanks.  more

Resolved Question: Why are Chinese Characters still used?

I mean, they may be beautiful, but they're horribly obsolete, cumbersome and impractical. Thousands of little drawings to memorise just to read a simple article in an unsophisticated news daily. Besides, using an obsolete pictographic writing system certainly doesn't help in spreading literacy (especially in case of foreigners trying to learn the language). Why does China still cling so stubbornly on to them? Some might say that disposing them off would 'destroy Chinese language and culture' but seriously, wouldn't many more people learn the Chinese (or Japanese) language if they had a more practical orthography? Japanese intrigues me even more. They use two syllaberies in conjunction with Chinese characters, why not just use the syllaberies instead? It's not like they're a good shorthand or anything- writing 'yuuki'-courage takes 23 strokes in characters and at most 7 or 8 strokes in kana (syllaberies), likewise 'ai'-love 13 strokes in characters and 5 strokes in kana, 'ryori'- cuisine- characters 21 strokes, kana 6 strokes. Please don't be offended, I'm not opposed to linguistic or cultural diversity, nor am I one of those 'Anglophone fanatics' who surf through Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese videos on youtube just to write 'LEARN ENGLISH YOU THIRD-WORLD BEASTS!' I'm a native Hindi speaker myself and take great pride in my language. I'm just curious about why Chinese Characters have managed to endure despite everything against them, please don't perceive my question as an attack on your culture, I never meant it to be.  more

Remember that 50 years ago you didn't need a college degree (debt) to obtain an entry level job, the money that you spent was recycled into your community (not sent off to China (communist)by way of Wal Mart), your children would have been educated in the best school system in the world (now 19th, 55th in literacy), there were no speeding tickets, booming economy, the wealthy paid taxes, income equality existed(gini index was 55 now 75 now we mirror Russia, Mexico, Brazil). Resolved Question: Is Tibet the true evil empire?

Did you know slavery was legal in Tibet before China invaded it...and modernized it, gave it health care, increased the life span by 25 years, decreased peri-natal mortality by 80%, improved its roads and infrastructure, improved its economy, eliminated slavery, gave women more equality than ever known before during the pre-China period, improved education standards, create the first college, improved literacy by 700%, nearly eradicated measles, mumps, influenza....just to mention a few. Now Tibet cries foul after the Dalai Lama was ousted? The Dalai Lama did jack fudge for the people of Tibet. We as Americans eradicated Native Americans. We destroyed them. All they have is casinos. China hasn't done anywhere near what we've done. How can we judge them and ignore our evils!!! Let China be. We can rename it USA2.  more

Resolved Question: Will the internet help free us from religious dogma?

The printing press was a key factor in allowing Martin Luther to overwhelm the Church's attempts to stifle his message. It allowed for widespread literacy rates to jump and, is arguably, also key in the Enlightenment and the "American Experiment". Will the internet play a similar role. Certainly, Islamic Theocracies fear it will. China restricts access based on similar fear. But can it be stopped by those who require a dogma to keep atheism from taking hold? Note - I view communism as just another religion - requiring dogma and the destruction of faith in other religions. That's why they claim to be "atheist" - but it is only a non-compete rule with other religions.  more

Resolved Question: If America is the best country on earth, what statistics prove this?

The US is 12th on the Human Development Index, behind France, Japan and Ireland. It is 8th in GDP per capita. It is 7th highest in average income, behind Luxembourg. Out of the 17 richest nations, the US was ranked 10th for adult literacy. Out of 20 developed nations, the US was ranked 19th for acceptance of evolution. The US army is smaller than China's, more poorly equipped than Israel's, and has less nuclear weapons than Russia. The US has the world's largest national debt, gives less to developed nations than Japan and Sweden, and has a smaller economy than the EU. Oh, but it does beat the rest of the world in one category. Child obesity. Ah Ha # 20: Thankfully, I don't live in America. Ah Ha # 20: Thankfully, I don't live in America. I pity those who do. Sappy Johnson: Sorry. Resolved Question: Anyone else embarrassed at being an American at this point in history?

It just seems to me that a country that considers itself the greatest country in the world should continue to back it up. I think we jumped off that wagon a long time ago choosing style over substance. According to the Human Poverty Index 2007-2008 The United States (the largest economy in the world) ranked 17th in the world. Contrasted against the top 20 wealthiest nations the US is last in life expectancy (who says our system is better than the single payer system?), the US has the highest percentage of citizens who make less than 50% of the median income of the country (but all those CEOs are throwing off the curve), and 3rd from last in literacy. The U.S. ranked 96th in The Economist’s Global Peace Index (GPI), GPI’s criteria included access to small weapons, percentage of population in prison, military expenditures and respect for human rights. GOT THAT? We rank lower than Cuba, Syria and China on an index that charts citizen imprisonment and human rights abuses. Go America!  more

Resolved Question: help with poverty.!!?

this is a newspaper article. i was wondering literally HOW education can get you out of poverty: "It felt like our whole future had been destroyed." Returning from hiding to her village in Sierra Leone, 15-year-old Mary Smart was stunned to find her classroom burned to the ground by rebels. The rebels ransacked her school and killed her teachers, as they had done countless times across the country, in the hope of keeping the population uneducated. But it didn't work. Now that the country's civil war is over – with largely peaceful elections held last month – Mary and others have begun returning to class, refusing to have their education taken from them. Mary wants to be a lawyer, she says. That way, she can defend the rights of other children to ensure they also get to go to school. This is the kind of success story that next Saturday's International Literacy Day is meant to honour. But while we are celebrating stories like Mary's, we must remember just how low on the world's list of priorities literacy has become. Less than 3 per cent of official development assistance is spent on education, with just a fraction of that going to literacy programs. While it would cost just $7 billion (U.S.) to teach every person to read and write, one in six is illiterate. By contrast, the U.S. and Europe alone spend upwards of $18 billion every year on makeup products. That's a discouraging disparity. It means that there are still 120 million children not in primary school and that nearly a billion people cannot read papers like this one. No one doubts that even a basic education is vital. The UN estimates that earning potential increases by as much as 10 per cent for every year of schooling. Basic literacy vastly improves a family's quality of life: they are better able to find jobs, prevent diseases and protect their rights and dignity. What's key about education is that it allows people to lift themselves out of poverty. It's not charity, but rather a long-term and sustainable path to development. Countries in the developing world, from Brazil to Senegal, are becoming aware of these benefits and in recent years have introduced national literacy strategies. Ethiopia's initiative is called the Education Sector Development Program. It provides alternative learning for children not in school, literacy classes for youth and even basic skills training for adults. With a literacy rate of only 41 per cent, the program will go a long way in helping ordinary Ethiopians out of poverty. It is expected to reach more then five million people by 2011. But these countries are struggling to fund their programs. Kenya spends just over $30 per person on education, while China spends about $20. Canada spends nearly $1,500 per person on education. Part of the problem is that many developing world countries are saddled with debt repayment, diverting billions of dollars a year away from social services. Burkina Faso spends five times more on its debt than it does on education. That is where the developed world can help. By dropping crippling debt repayments for countries that show good governance, the West can ensure poor nations have more money for education. And by linking aid and trade deals to education spending, countries can know that their money is being put to good use. Three per cent of official development assistance is simply not enough. Because, as Stephen Lewis once said, "education is the solution to everything." what would happen if this problem isn't corrected?  more

Resolved Question: what is more important to you? your health? or your jewellery? (see link)?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/sep/12/film.health I think what Cuba proves is that communism, even in it's non-perfect form, is not quite the write-off that it's been portrayed as since the fall of the Soviet union. Despite being boycotted by the world's largest power, and despite the lack of Soviet support for the last 18 years, they're still doing very well in healthcare and literacy. South America is more left-wing than it's ever been and if, as the harbingers of doom expect, global warming and associated problems (growth of China, food shortages, fuel shortages). cause major problems in the 21st century, then who knows what might happen to capitalist Britain!!!  more

Resolved Question: can somebody comment on my global study class paper?

“Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind.” (John F. Kennedy) Mankind has an obligation to prevent war and the suffering of people throughout the world. So far there are dozens of conflict throughout the world. Most of them are in Africa. With the uses of children soldiers in most of the major world conflicts Africa has become a place of diseases and turmoil due to the high poverty rate and corruption within its governments. Mankind is at a critical standstill right now. We must decide to end global conflict or to let those conflict play out and watch as millions of people raped, died, or murder with a guilty conscience. Africa throughout the last few centuries has seen slavery, conquest from foreign occupation, and striping of its national resources. With the Berlin conference we see the European empires dividing Africa into colonies with no respect for ethics and religious boundary. Not until 1960s and 70s do we see these countries becoming independent from their Europeans control. When Europe left Africa, it left behind a continent of low literacy rate and high poverty. With these circumstances and with a weak government bodies we see the beginning of the downfall of de-evolutionary of humanity in Africa. With civil war and genocides raging across Africa for the last half century the whole world have seen to ignore the situation and shown no real effort in stopping the massacre that’s been going on. With the situation in Africa right now we see a de-evolutionary in human behaviors and morals. With rebel groups like the Jinjaweed, which have raped and murdered numerous people. Not only do they kill people like animals but they kidnapped and force children to join their military rank. With tens of Thousands of children serving in rebel groups throughout Africa we see the downfall of education, agriculture, economy, population, and consequently civilization itself. These morals actions have put humanity to a standstill in both ends. Countries that have the power to prevent and stop this tragical event in our world aren’t doing enough. Not only is the decreasing belief in humanity moral code of conduct happening in Africa but in every country that isn’t doing a damn thing about it. Consequently if we don’t put a stop to the genocides and killing in Africa then we as mankind will destroy ourselves. The solution to this problem needs to have international support and corporations. Some countries and individuals have already made the effort on helping Africa become a better place. China has tens of thousands of aid workers to Africa with trading reaching 5 billion dollars in 2006. Other individuals like Mr. Lbrahim (who has given millions of dollar to well behave African leaders) and corporation that have contribute hundreds of million of dollars to help with economic developments and to help fight poverty and Aids in Africa. Aids is a big problem in Africa which have claim the lives of millions of people with another 31 million people with HIV positive which accounts for 74 percent of the over all percentage of the global HIV pool. The world has reacted strongly to the Aids and property problem in Africa by contributing tens of billions of dollars. Also international effort with huge support from the Red Cross and the United Nations has sent thousands of aid workers to Africa. In recent year the flow of money and aid workers to Africa have been decreasing due to the extreme violent of civil wars and ethic cleansings. The international communities have done an incredible job by pouring money and people into Africa but the main problem still wait to be resolved. Africa biggest threats are its civil wars. The international community seems to avoid that millions of people have died due to absolute authoritative leaders that wants to root out a certain ethic group of people within their country like Darfur in Sudan. If the global communities failed to provide effective diplomatic solution or military support then we will see the continuing slottering of millions of children and women. With international sanction and military operation if its necessary to bring down a civil war and regain stability throughout the region will benefit the people of Africa and the global population as well. It have been millions of death past due that we owe Africa, to give it back its prosperity and would laminate the killing and mass migration that is going on in Africa right now. So as mankind we have a obligation to stop the civil violent that’s going in Africa before it starts knocking on our own front door. .  more

Kennedy) Mankind has an obligation to prevent war and the suffering of people throughout the world. So fair there are dozens of conflict throughout the world. So as mankind we have a obligation to stop the civil violent that’s going in Africa before it starts knocking on our own front door. .  more

Resolved Question: Should the Indian government increase the education budget?

As you may know, India's literacy is severely ragging at a rate of only around 50%, which is relatively low and in a sense, humiliating, considering there are countries like China, with even more population, and there literacy rate is 90% - and that is a startling fact considering the difficulty of the Chinese language, and the fact that it has no aphabet system. I researched the reasn why China has so high literacy rates, that it has today, and the reason was because it invested large amounts since it's early inception as a communist state. Therefore, should the government be more concerned with this stastic and increase the existing amount of the budget on education. As you may as well know, education is the most important route to ending poverty in India: - it can increase and diversify the pool of skilled labour, and therefore increase employment among poor and rduce poverty, as the salaries are higher - it can foster intercultural and religious harmony and destroy ignorance - It can reduce the unsustainable increase in population - It can prevent the children from turning to corruption when they are older - It can eradicate ancient-values such as caste and dowry, which hinder the overall progress and development of the nation - It can increase awareness of the environment among the youth, so when they are older, they can implement more environmentally friendly practises And much much more... Considering all these developments, which will only serve to pull India closer to the first world, and eradicate the very roots of poverty once and for all, logically shouldn't the Indian government spend one of the largest portions of their budgets on this.  more

Resolved Question: Are we not heading in the wrong direction in North America? Read below?

"A historian says class-based natural selection caused the Industrial Revolution. Theory: 1) In pre-industrial England, wills show "the rich had more surviving children than the poor." 2) "The poor failed to reproduce themselves and the progeny of the rich took over their occupations. " Therefore, 3) "The modern population of the English is largely descended from the economic upper classes of the Middle Ages." As a result, 4) "Thrift, prudence, negotiation and hard work" replaced "spendthrift, impulsive, violent and leisure loving" behaviors. 5) This, in turn, reduced violence and increased literacy, work hours, savings, and productivity. 6) This transition "may lie as much in our genes as in ideology or rationality." 7) China and Japan lagged England because "their richer classes … were surprisingly unfertile." Implication: Today's poor countries lag economically because they haven't endured the same selective pressures." The rich aren't breeding, the middle can't afford and the rest?  more

Resolved Question: What's better extreme India or moderate China?

Here in the west we talk about the golden mean. Moderation is important to us. China reflects that ideal. However India is a country of strong opposites, high spirituality, low literacy and high poverty.  more

Resolved Question: Christians are you sure Jesus will save them from wrath of God?

With the fall of the Roman Empire, the librarian of Alexandria was pulled off her carriage and skinned alive. Literacy dropped. Even the Pope had to have the Bible read to him. In the first crusade, Christians killed tens of thousands of people they called "infidels". The Children's Crusade (1212) caused the deaths of nearly 50,000 children. Preachers sentenced to death and executed thousands during the Inquisition (1233-1834) for heresy and witchcraft. There were the Salem witch trials (1692) in America. The 17th Century Thirty Years War (Catholics v. protestants) wiped out tens of millions in Europe. In the Taiping Rebellion in China in the 1850's a Christian cult started a war that resulted in the slaughter of twenty million people. In the Holocaust six million Jews were murdered. Muslims and Christians in Bosnia reached a death toll of over 250,000. See what I mean?  more

Resolved Question: Enter the Trade Embargo against Cuba Immediately!!!?

Perhaps the biggest failure in American foreign policy (aside from Viet. & Iraq) since WW2 is its rape of Latin America, and the understanding that Castro declared war, or an embargo against the US! Castro is one of the greatest men of the 20thc.! The USA has a 1 trillion t.deficit with China, and has sold out manufacturing jobs for corporate profits...meanwhile, you still have idiots that say Castro is more important than the shift of global power to Asia, the Iraq debacle, African aid & domestic violence, healthcare, agendas...how important is Castro? The guys a hero for exposing the hypocricy of American foreign policy...he's outlasted 9-10? American presidents and can walk down the streets of Havana with cheers...Who cares more about social justice in the world - Fidel Castro or George Bush. Cuba exports doctors and teachers to other developing nations, their literacy rate is almost 100%...if anyone disagrees, you are a slave to the American propoganda machine. Brick, Sorry, you're thinking of the American systematic execution of Iraqis and Vietnamese, and the mass violence domestically that plagues your country both internally and thoughout the world. The CIA and the Catholic Church kidnapped 30,000 cuban children from their homes in the 60's...who started the 'bay of pigs', which launched the cuban missle crisis...which country got in each other's ass first? Joshua Keyes is an American soldier who has refused to go back to Iraq after stating that he witnessed fellow soldiers decapitating and playing footbal with the heads of innocent Iraqi civilians. That is not propaganda. Get your priorities straight. USA - the hell out of Iraq!  more

Resolved Question: Why do so many Americans still think we are # 1 in the world when:?

Our infant mortality rates # 48 in the world, our overall health # 72, freedom of the press# 44 and literacy # 55. When most of the industrialized world has healthcare for everyone and we owe China 1 trillion dollars. We need to stop thinking that being the greatest country in the world is a birth right and we are now only coasting on the achievements of earlier generations. Should our goverment not stop living the moral high ground, when we have a president that believes it is okay to torture people or making them dissappear without a trial. Before voting please consider these points. Is it really important to keep gays from marrying when we take away money from our social security to fuel the war. Well well, truth is I have traveled a lot to other countries in Europe and South America, and they are better in many ways, don't take my question as such a personal attack, I do love this country, just as I love my husband, still would like to change some things about him  more
