Issues In Higher Education Questions and Answers

Open Question: Why Am I Acting This Way? He says it's in my head. He says I'm crazy. Am I?

ANSWER IF YOU'RE A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL ONLY, PLEASE! I'm experiencing psychological troubles. I need an answer/advice from a psychologist or psychiatrist in regard to what I need to do. BACKGROUND ON ME: I'm female, mid 30's, business owner/manager, divorced & living with fiance,' one child; age 16, on a scale of 1-10 of stress (10 being the worst) I think based on circumstances of life & my reactions/how I view & handle it, stress level is about a 9. My boyfriend recently ended the relationship although he still resides in my house. Said he has no intentions of working it out. He is actively seeking other women with whom to cultivate a relationship. He said that after my being diagnosed with an illness 2 years ago, that I became too possessive & controlling of him, where he went, who he saw/spoke with, etc. That in it's self is VERY stressful & adding to my drama in my life = more stress, you get the general idea. I DO have "panic disorder" for which I take Xanax (1.5 or 2 mg total per day.) I break the tablets & take it 2-3 X per day to avoid an attack. NO other medications. Thought I was BiPolar, was told I was not. Was also given EEG, was told no trouble & no signs of schizophrenia, etc. No ental disorders in my family history. HERE'S WHAT IS GOING ON: Ever since about the time I was diagnosed with a cancer, I became sort of depressed. I continued to work ful time running my business. Fiance was (still) unemployed so I told him he was a help just helping out in the business wth me. (I lied to save his feeings, he was used to being the bread winner.) Same time frame (2008) my daughter started failing in school and my mother whom is a teacher interfered severely in her education & caused her (and me) alot of stress. She "borrows trouble" and to this day, creates stressful situations in our lives on purpose. I don't know why she does. It adds more stress. I found out that my boyfriend was communicating with other women and his ex girlfriend in 2008. I confronted him, he lied about the situation until I presented him with the proof. Then, he admitted what he was doing. I have caught him in several lies. IF I ever question anything he says, regardless of the situation, he tells me "that I am questioning his integrity." He gets VERY upset. About a year after I caught him talking to these women, he came to me and said, "My mother doesn't think I'm happy. I don't think I'm happy. I need space." Then that following saturday he went to visit that ex girlfriend and lied to me about where he was going. I knew where he was going but did not question his integrity. The next night he came home, took me out to dinner, explained the whole thing & apologized. He said he felt guilty & that he wanted to give our life together another try. I reminded him of the fact that about a year after he moved in with e, he started saying thngs like, "I will end up hurting you someday, I always leave relationships...I always look on the other side of the fence & the grass doesn't even have to be greener. I always find something that makes me leave." He said he would be committed. We contnued to ive together & evrything was fine, save the fact that he thought I spent too much time working. (Well, I had to because this was our income.) Since I'd caught him in several falsehoods before, I always had it in the back of my mind that he'd might try to cheat. (HE HAS SEVERE TRUST ISSUES THAT STEM WAY BACK WHEN HIS OWN MOTHER PLACED HIM IN A SITUATION TO BE MOLESTED; SHE FOUND OUT & DID NOTHING ABOUT IT & IDEALIZED THE MAN WHO COMMITTED THE CRIME, HIS OWN GRANDFATHER. PLUS, HE HAD ABANDONMENT ISSUES WITH HIS REAL FATHER WHO DIDN'T SHOW UP FOR HIS MAJOR EVENTS LIKE HIS 1ST WEDDING, HIS GRADUATIONS FROM HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE, ETC., ETC.) I thought maybe he didn't trust me because of these things & that was why he always looked for a reason to get out in any relationship he was in... IS THIS POSSIBLE? Then, about a month ago he came to me & said he was attracted to other women & wanted the freedom to date whomever he chooses to. he said he would go out & do fun things with me, however he said I am to controlling of the money, the business, WAY too controlling of HIM. I could not understand this thinking, because in MY mind, we had aways had amazing communication. We had (so I thought) an amazingly healthy sense of trust. I had never thrown anything from his past with anyone ese (he'd cheated on his ex-wife) or our past (the seeing his ex thing) ever. I NEVER, EVER BROUGHT UP THE PAST. Either way, he'd decided that he wanted his "freedom" so I gave it to him. He sill lives here, etc. HERE'S WHAT I AM DOING NOW THAT'S BIZZARE: I started to go on a literal "witch hunt" to "find out the truth" of what is going on. Who he  more

Open Question: Conservatives point of view on illegal immigration please.?

Okay, So I get onto myspace earlier, and I have a comment from a blog that I wrote called "What I DISLIKE MOST is..." I wrote it a couple of years ago, and it basically rants on about Illegal Immigration. Now that comment that was left, happen to be from a guy named "R". ("R" is my fiance's father, whom she met once a few years ago. Where he grabbed her butt, and she hasn't talked to him since. Yesterday, he sent her a random message saying he wants her in his life, and he's sorry, blah blah blah..). "R" doesn't know that we're engaged that I know of. I have never met "R", and fiance wants nothing to do with him, especially after reading what he sent me.. I will post the blog, then after it, I will post the comments he left me. Here is the blog I wrote: We need to crack down on Illegal immigration. I mean what the fuck don't they understand about "ILLEGAL"? Illegal immigrants are costing Americans billions of dollars and millions of jobs. If legal citizens were working these jobs, they would be bringing more money into the economy because their paychecks are taxed. We spend billions on schooling and incarcerating illegal Fucks. With America on high terrorist alert, should we allow illegal immigrants to stay and put our country at risk for terrorist attacks? American children have suffered through crowded classrooms. Schools also have less money to spend on each legal child, with illegal immigrants attending. Overcrowding in the United States is already an issue. Is there any benefit in recognizing illegal aliens as American citizens, and giving them the rights we have? Should children of illegal immigrants, be allowed to be citizens if born in the U.S.? I think not. We need to consider what the 14th amendment really means, the protection of native-born children from parents that are citizens of the United States. Being an illegal immigrant is in itself breaking the United States law. When caught they are given a court date to which they are too appear. When given this date only 15% of them do show up for court, 85% of which show, are deported. The 85%, who do not show up for court, break yet another law, contempt of court, yet again becoming fugitives. And of course leaving them free and running illegally through the U.S. Illegal immigrants have sent 40 billion non taxed dollars from the U.S. to Mexico since January 2006 and around 320 billion non taxed dollars to Latin America since 2001. Now, many argue that this will help boast Mexico's economy; they are helping their families get out of poverty by supporting them. Those who move out of poverty have access to health care and education, which I will admit is a necessity. This money helps build the country's infrastructure. However, the non-taxed money they are sending home puts a burden on Americans alike. The government loses tax opportunities and has to obtain the money some way, usually resulting in the raising of taxes. Not to mention, the U.S. has spent around 14 billion for schooling of illegal immigrant children, and have spent around a billion and a half on incarceration of illegal immigrants since 2001. Now, where do you think this money comes from? The money comes from taxes, which are from hardworking legal American citizens, which is spent on supporting the American Government. The Government then uses the taxes to pay for education, law enforcement, the military that protects the United States, jails, prisons, support for those who need it. At least 43% of illegal Mexicans took advantage of at least one welfare program last year. Spending all this money on illegal immigrants, is only taking money from our Government and when Government funds are low, again American taxes raise. Who suffers the most? Lower income families see the biggest loss. Letting illegal aliens, stay will cause continuous problems on the economy and the American people. This will inspire others to sneak across the United States borders, sail from Cuba to the U.S., and find other loopholes through our security and enter the country, without fear of repercussion of American laws. If we just shot all Illegal immigrants, then this would keep other immigrants from entering American soil illegally. This would also make the illegal immigrants we already have here to leave or face Death. There are over 20 million illegal immigrants in this country as of 2006, that number is expected to rise to over 70 million within 20 years. The majority of the Illegal immigrants sneak from Mexico into the United States. There are over a half a million other then Mexican illegal immigrants. Americans have lost over 10 million jobs to illegal immigrants that do not even pay taxes to the U.S. Government. With the nation's economy in shock and losing jobs, we have seen the unemployment rate spike to record high numbers. There are about nine mill million Americans unemployed in the U.S. as of January 2007. These families have no other choice then to use the welfare programs, and have trouble finding jobs. If we cut down on illegal immigration, Americans who desperately need them may find these jobs. There are more than 300 thousand illegal immigrants incarcerated. Many of them in prison are multiple offenders. This is a tremendous number considering we already have overcrowded jails and prisons. With there being over 20 million illegal immigrants and with the number rapidly increasing if we do not find a way to control them, it is just adding to the already overcrowded United States. Are natural forest and parks will suffer, Even our small town could be another Mexico. That is why we need to stop this before the problem is too large to control. Now, I don't see anything in here at all.. It's ones opinion backed up with facts. Now here is what his comments said: You're an idiot. There is no such thing as an illegal alien. Where did you come from? If you're white, you came from Europe which means your ancestors slaughtered the native-americans to take this land! Mexicans are just looking to have a better life. What do you have against that? Don't we all want a better life? If you want to pick strawberries let me know. My Mexican brothers would welcome the help (how 'bout $5.00 an hour?). And in case your wondering, I am white. I'm also so and so's dad. (I'm sure this comment will piss her off, but the truth is the truth, oh well...). Put your hatred aside, it's friggin' ugly. By the way,. You ain't good enough for my daughter. Now, this made me and my fiance very angry. She wants me to "let him have it". So I've been thinking while pissed off, and can't get my thoughts straight right now. Could someone please helm me tell him off with facts. I want to tell him that he's the one who's naive, and counter everything he just said to me. I really want to be an ass about it too. Please help me with something! Thanks  more

Resolved Question: Does a high IQ score bear any weight on a resume? Do you think it should?

Presuming of course that the other prerequisite/relevant credentials are emphasized, everything is verifiable through listed contacts, and the resume itself is well organized and neat. Let's say a person was measured to have an IQ of 136 by a professionally validated test. Would that be something worth mentioning on a resume? Regardless of what significance it could bear, do you think it ought to make much difference? Personally, I have a certain degree of skepticism regarding the validity of IQ scores, not the least of which is my concern that they may not adequately indicate a person's cognitive abilities. Tests are scored based partially on the speed of completion, and this can be a hindrance for somebody who is dispositioned to have a greater challenge staying focused (for instance, many people with Attention Deficit Disorder have difficulties concentrating). Also, the result will invariably have one of two caveats depending on the test: if it includes trivial questions (ie. history, geography, common/advanced knowledge), then it will de-emphasize the subject's capacity to reason and think abstractly (thus, it may not be an accurate reflection of intelligence); conversely, if it has been specialized to exclude trivialities, then it would be a good determinate towards the efficiency of cognitive functions but without having any relation to the accumulated knowledge and experience of the subject (beyond basic understandings). And of course, there's the culture-related controversy that argues the tests were initially composed with the target audience of white middle class citizens, although I think this is rapidly becoming less of a concern as education has become more prevalent (though I could still be wrong) - but it remains an issue with people who were originally raised in a different society. What do you think?  more

Open Question: Why is college so ridiculous nowadays?

This is more of a rant to see if anyone out there agrees that the whole collegiate educational system is a giant steaming hunk of crap. Why is it that now state colleges are 5k+ per semester, and while the government is promising to pay for that amount they make excuses to help out those who cheat the system? I am a first year college student who has worked since I was 14 years old and had no ambitions whatsoever about furthering my education. I decided it was time to head to school after pressure from friends, family, and colleagues to go to school as I would like more opportunity. I had no delusions that college and paying for it would be easy, but now I'm beyond frustrated and confused how anybody even goes full-time to college! First off, I am 22, and according to our government I am considered a Dependent Student, who relies on their parents or their parents will pay for the education? How ludicrous is this! What form of moron would set the age of "independence" at 24? And then there is cap on how much I can borrow from said government? So wait a minute. You aren't really "paying" for my education. I'm borrowing from you, having to pay it back (With interest no less) and I can't get enough to cover my tuition? I can't even get enough to use for books or living expenses? Did you leave this for a room of kindergartners to decide? That's undoubtedly the most counter-productive thing I have EVER heard! And oh, don't get me started on this "minority" loan issue. Never in my life have I ever been so shocked to watch people use and abuse the system and be rewarded with such high rewards. So Tim Mcwelfare decides he has a fancy for college, and gets a full ride because he decided to leech off the system, have 10 children, smoke crack, and not only abuse government grants but most likely TANF and welfare as well? What a joke. I understand children who's parents can't help them pay, but what about those of us who fall into middle class working families in America? Those who are still paying of loans like my parents? And this whole "minority" ridiculousness, why do certain groups of people get scholarships because of something that happened almost 100 years ago? I know I'm idealistic, but it just feels like to go to school I have to jump through hoop after flaming, 14 feet off the ground hoop, and I'm wondering how many people out there feel the same way. with the cost of tuition going up, I can only assume many people are finding it easier to just go without. Am I right? Actually, almost all my loans are unsubsidized. And I feel as someone who plans on serving her country in the air force anyone worth there own sweat can pay a little higher in taxes. In fact, I feel that most of welfare should be redone and that money should go towards all aspects of education. Oh, and by the way, anyone that complains about paying taxes on a college education rant serves no purpose to further the debate. You should start another question where you talk about people your paying to study and how much you hate doing that. It would be much more well received then on my question. =) I was home-schooled. That's why yet again I say to Arbitrary person and the other comment about tax payers don't apply to me. I pay taxes, and I don't complain. If they taxed me more for college students, or any form of education, I still wouldn't complain. If you are going to whine about taxes, this isn't the question to do it on. Go make your own. You just come off sounding like a holier then thou, miserly, snubbed, sloppy, sniffling bigot to me. And while I feel I should acknowledge the fact that you felt you needed to say something when its brings nothing to the debate is somewhat amusing, oh wait. Its not. Oh, and though I'm a college student I do acknowledge I have limitations in spelling. No worries, I can still do math well enough to know that most of YOUR taxes would be better spent in my pocket anyway. =)  more

Open Question: Remeber the lesbian prom date debate? What do you think of the outcome of the case?

CNN) -- A school district in Mississippi has agreed to pay a recent high school graduate $35,000 in damages and adopt a policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, according to a statement released Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union. The settlement comes after the ACLU sued the school district in Fulton, Mississippi, on behalf of Constance McMillen, a lesbian teen who was told by Itawamba Agricultural High School officials she and her girlfriend would be ejected if they attended the school-sponsored prom. The agreement, which was filed Tuesday, ends the lawsuit. "I'm so glad this is all over. I won't ever get my prom back, but it's worth it if it changes things at my school," McMillen said in a statement released Tuesday. The prom, originally scheduled for April 2, was eventually canceled by school board officials who previously said they reached their decision based on "the education, safety and well-being of [its] students." Officials at McMillen's former high school are not commenting at this time, and a call to the north Mississippi school district seeking comment Tuesday wasn't immediately returned. According to the ACLU statement, McMillen "suffered humiliation and harassment after parents, students and school officials executed a cruel plan to put on a decoy prom for her while the rest of her classmates were at a private prom 30 miles away." McMillen believes the alternative prom she was sent to was a sham because only a handful of people attended. "A lot of people were talking about how it was a joke just set up for me," she previously said. In March, a federal judge ruled that McMillen's First Amendment rights were violated when her school district refused to let her attend her prom in a tux with a girl. That was good news, said her attorney, Christine Sun, senior counsel with the ACLU's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender project. It set a precedent and helped broadcast an important statement, which was made stronger by virtue of where it came from, she said. "We're in a conservative area of the country, where people tend to think we can do what we like," said Sun, who lives in New York but has traveled multiple times to Mississippi on McMillen's behalf. "This case sends a strong message that that's not going to fly anymore." In 2004, the national gay rights group GLSEN -- the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network -- issued a report that said of all 50 states, Mississippi had the most hostile environment for gay youths. "We hope this judgment sends a message to schools that they cannot get away with discriminating against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students," said Bear Atwood, interim legal director at the ACLU of Mississippi. Since McMillen's name made national headlines, the lesbian teen advocate has served as the grand marshal for New York's Gay Pride Parade, she received a $30,000 college scholarship from an anonymous donor, and a Facebook page called "Let Constance Take Her Girlfriend to Prom!" had attracted nearly 410,000 fans as of Tuesday. "It means a lot to me," McMillen said. "The amount of support helps me to continue with the fight." http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/07/20/mississippi.lesbian.settlement/index.html?hpt=P1&iref=NS1 I should also note that Ellen Degeneres gave $30, 000 to the girl for a college fund. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/03/19/entertainment/main6315322.shtml  more

Open Question: A difficult family situation?

Okay so here it is, I have a mom who has problems with alcohol and things for both me my brother and my sister have been bad. She never really physically abuses us, on one occasion my sister was slapped but my sister was the one who hit first. My mom tends to go drinking and come home and pick a fight over nothing and she will scream at you and call you awful names, I am only 13 and she continues to call me a b**ch and she has called me a worthless little nothing repeatedly. She calls my sister fat all of the time and I don't quite remember all that has happened to my brother. My dad tries his best to stop this but she will end up getting very angry at him and he has thrown things at him along with kicking and slamming a door on his arm. At a point in my childhood she even thought he was molesting me and my sister which is 100% untrue. We have already had issues with family services and trust me they are not the answer in this situation. I doubt my mom will ever get better, she gets really mad when you mention AA. So here is the issue, My sister is going to be a senior and she wants to leave for colleges that she can get scholarships from because she is a very good ap student but she said she didn't want to go because when my brother left all of my moms attention went on her and it became worse for her. She doesn't want that happening to me so my sister wants to stay. Recently, me and my sister went down by ourselves to visit my brother and we talked a lot about my mom and my brother came up with an idea. There is a nice privet high school in walking distance from his home and he said I could get accepted into the school and I could live with him so my sister could go get her education. My brother is financially able to, he is going into med school and has help from the military to pay for it and him and my sister in law were talking about getting a house anyway. If I were accepted to the school I could most likely get the scholarship and any leftover costs my parents could pay for since I wouldn't be living there. My brother is turning 26 and he could just get guardianship of me while I lived there for high school. And he is leaving the military and has already been deployed so there is no issue there. My parents could move out west where my brother says my mom does better as far as drinking most likely because we live in the same town as her abusive father. I understand what I would have to give up(things like my friends, my pets, my school) and school might be rough at first but I feel it's all worth not having to deal with problems at home. However my sister says two kids gone at once might make it worse for my mom and that is what I'm asking. Do you think I should go to help myself and my sister? Or potentially help my mother even though I will have those nights going through h*ll. Btw I am 13 my sister is 17 and my brother is 25 and he loves it when me and my sister come to see him, because we aren't like regular siblings we stick together. What do you think?  more

Open Question: Is it "racism" that causes black kids to be more likely to go to prison?

Michele Obama to the NAACP, "When so many of our children still attend crumbling schools, and a black child is still far more likely to go to prison than a white child, I think the founders of this organization would agree that our work is not yet done." WHAT does Obama and the NAACP think is the REASON why black kids are more likely to go to prison over white kids? She said it is "stubborn inequality " in "education, income, and wealth". WHERE was the mention that 50% of black males drop out of high school? WHERE was the mention that 80% of blacks who enter college "fail" or "drop" out because they are unprepared to do college-level work? WHERE was the mention of any statistics CLEARLY linking "single motherhood" with crime? WHERE was the mention that 72% of black babies are born out of wedlock? WHY was there no mention of "cultural" issues in Black America that hurt blacks in general? WHERE was the name of ONE study that showed that the "stubborn inequality" was a result of racism and not personal or cultural choices?? Help us Michelle.... we want to understand your racist rant. God of Godless- I have LITERALLY shoveled pig poop out of pig pens to earn my money. PLEASE don't say that you "know" I live a life where everything was always provided for me. You couldn't be more wrong....  more

Resolved Question: How do I convince my parents that me getting married isn't a mistake?

So I'll start from the beginning. My whole life, I have been raised to believe that money is important. My parents are very well-off, and they expect that I will end up in a similar situation to them. The thing is, I really don't like their lifestyle. It feels empty and meaningless, without feeling. Sure, they have a big house, really nice cars, and can throw money around like it's nobodies business, but those things just really don't matter to me. Since high school, I have dated nice guys from well-off families who go on to college, get a complicated degree, and go on to make a hefty salary. The thing that I've found about these men, though, is that everything besides work and money is unimportant to them. The last guy I dated before my fiance was one of those guys. Classic overachiever, had $10,000 in the bank before he even went to college, graduated magna cum laude from University of Arizona with an Optical Engineering degree, and is going on to Graduate school this fall. I dated Kyle (the ex) for almost two years, and I was miserable the entire time. He was selfish, unappreciative, and made me feel bad about my appearance, education, and job. Since I decided to begin my career (at a large international hotel chain, where starting pay was $10/hour full time, and have since gotten multiple raises) instead of going to school right away, he looked down on me. He just made me hate waking up in the morning. I began feeling the way he saw me, and had some self-esteem issues. Not to say that EVERYTHING with Kyle was bad. Our relationship was actually pretty great for the first year or so. But it wasn't worth the pain it caused me. About 6 months ago, I met my fiance, Joe. I was still with Kyle, but had been looking for the guts to break up with him for some time. It took one conversation over coffee with Joe to realize how bad things really had become. Joe was so sweet and gentlemanly to me (he's from the South!), refused to let me pay for my coffee, and basically just made me feel like I was a princess. I broke up with Kyle the very next day, and haven't looked back. The only thing is that Joe is from a different background than me. He was raised by a single mom with 5 siblings on a low income. He's been to prison (drug charges from a misspent youth) and doesn't ever plan on going to college. He makes good money though, training horses. He's one of the best in Arizona, next to his boss, and he's only 22. He's an extremely hard worker and takes great pride in being able to pay for anything he wants. The most important thing about him, to me, though, is that he respects me, loves me, and thinks I'm incredibly special. It's so refreshing to be looked at with eyes that see me that way. Unfortunately, my parents don't see the benefits of the way Joe treats me the same as I do. They only see his past, not the potential for a happy future. It breaks my heart that they don't approve of my engagement, and in fact my mother was quite rude about it and spoke to me like I was a child who didn't have a clue. I only wish they would notice how ecstatic I am, and how my whole life has improved. My job performance has gone through the roof, I no longer suffer from insomnia, and it's pretty darn hard to get this smile that's become a permanent resident on my face to fade. So how do I get them to see what I see? I'm overwhelmed. If they're not on board, then I really can't afford a big wedding. Which isn't a huge deal, but I'm very close with my extended family and it would be very difficult for me to get married without having them at my wedding. So far, to try and convince my parents I'm not making an irrational decision, Joe and I have pushed the wedding from 1 year in the future to almost two years. I'm trying so hard to show them that I really see myself growing old with this man, and that nothing could make me happier, but no luck so far. A couple important details: I'm 20, Joe is 22, I've been out of high school for three years, and left college for my job about 1 year ago. I make $12 and hour, and have a career plan with my hotel chain to eventually end up in Event Management. Joe makes $800 every time he trains a horse, and consistently has about twenty at a time. We both have similar goals for children, career, and life. And he gets me, and I get him. So. What are your suggestions?  more

Open Question: High school foreign exchange advice...?

I will be a junior in high school this upcoming school year, and due to family issues and overall stress, I know I need to get out of town. I'm interested in doing a foreign exchange my senior year, for either a semester or a year. I am participating in the IB program at my high school this year, and if I did take my education to another country, I would like to continue the IB program there. In addition to attending an IB school, I would like to attend an English speaking school preferably, while living with a Spanish speaking family in another country. I'm not fluent in Spanish, but I feel like I would know enough to get by living with a Spanish speaking family, while continuing an American education, as well as the IB program, at school. I've looked into a few schools, one of them being the Colegio Franklin Delano Roosevelt- The American School of Lima in Peru. However, the website hasn't answered all of my questions. Does anyone have any suggestions for similar schools that meet the requirements illustrated above?  more

Open Question: Standardizing/ evaluating this argument, premises/ conclusions, critical thinking HELP!!?

Take a look at this argument- I have been asked to standardize it. From my knowledge of standardizing arguments I have separated the premises from conclusion (I think) and have stated each sentence as a self-sufficient declarative sentence. I would appreciate any feedback/ thuoghts and please no opinionated responses, the argument is fictional and opinion is unnecessary. Any tips on evaluation would be great as well. THANKS! "It has become a commonplace to talk about the backlash against feminism, and there can be no question that there is something to this talk. One doesn’t need to set the crazy dial all the way to Fox to find pundits blaming feminism for all manner of things, from the breakdown of the nuclear family, to childhood delinquency, to the higher cost of housing. While many men preach egalitarianism, few practice it in their own homes. Workplace discrimination still thrives. But we must not lose track of the real gains the push for equality of the sexes has made, and that won’t be relinquished barring the rise of a Taliban-like group in Canada. There are fewer and fewer gender lines in employment, despite complaints from holdouts like firefighters. Single-sex education is disappearing, and women attend college and university in numbers equal to men. The hypocritical requirement of virginity for young women has been abolished. Whether or not they do their share of housework, men are expected to be involved in their families, not to be the aloof figures of 1950s stereotype. The bad news tells us that the fight isn’t over, but we should not lose track of the battles already won. My attempt: 1.Cultural experts commonly associate feminism with the breakdown of societal pillars. 2.The collapse of the nuclear family, childhood delinquency, and the heightened housing costs are results of feminism. 3.Egalitarianism remains unpracticed in the households of many Canadian men. 4.Workplace discrimination remains dominant in Canada. [5.] The imminent backlash against feminism remains a common discussion point in Canada. 6.Canadian women and men are becoming educated in equal numbers. 7.Young Canadian women are not required to be virgins. 8.The paternal expectations in Canadian families have increased from the 1950’s stereotype. [9.] The strides in equality of the sexes have increased and produced a resilient, non-segregated Canadian population. 10.The to-date push for gender equality in Canada is praise-worthy and unfinished. [ ] = premise/ conclusion My evaluation: The arguer addresses the issue of gender equality by drawing a conductive argument. First, feminism is showcased as the culprit behind degrading societal constants such as the nuclear family and childhood delinquency. Second, the gains created by the attempts at gender equivalence over time are notable and should not go unnoticed. The information that the arguer presents regarding egalitarianism or workplace discrimination is not based on any apparent analyses, as this argument seems to be more of a declarative than a true experimental study. That being said, with the background of the arguer unknown and assumed to be that of an average citizen, the statements of, ‘many men,’ and, ‘gains not being relinquished barring the rise of a Taliban-like group,’ seem to be over-generalizations and laden with emotionally charged language. The arguer presents both the pros and cons on the state of gender equality past and present and it seems that the premises stating the dominance of feminism attacks (premises 3 and 4) may override the final conclusion. If egalitarianism and workforce discrimination still exist in Canada, are the gains showcased by the gender equilibrium really all that substantial? In this case, premises 3 and 4 may fail the relevance condition; however the cogency of the argument remains strong because the remaining premises do not really show any doubt when it comes to the conclusion that yes, talks of feminism backlash still exist, however the strides produced by the equal rights efforts are notable and on a positive direction. Have I got this right? At all? Where did I go wrong??? HELP!!!  more

Resolved Question: How do I get rid of combat in my mind?

That's the best way I can describe it. I seem to having fighting and violence on my mind all of the time. When I dream, I can start holding the hands of the girl I want, but the next instant I'm flinging us through the air, or spinning, fighting other people. My entire body is like one huge exposed nerve- I jump into a fighting crouch at unexpected sounds, I automatically scan my environment for possible threats even when in places like the mall or my own home, I can hear and smell things my friends and relatives can't, or usually way before. My friends have several nicknames for me- Jason, from Jason Bourne, because I often act like him, and fight a lot like him- when forced into a fight, I prefer to end it with brutal efficiency. Another is new, Johnny- as in Johnny Depp, who played the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, because when my temper snaps the result its usually similar- people cower, I tower over them, and honestly terrify everyone nearby. Most people have two sides to life- the lover side and the fighter side. Here in high school, everyone's in lover mode. They enjoy life, look to the future, follow their education closely, look for their soul mate, etc. Most people seem to live their whole life like it- just living their lives normally. The only time they ever let the fighter side of their personality out is when necessary- someone jumps you in the bar, breaks into your house, robs you on the street. People live their lives like that, focusing on life, while not even considering fighting or combat of any sort until once or twice when they or someone nearby gets drunk. Then they go into live or die mode, fight for their personal well-being, then go back to life. But it's like I'm stuck in fighting mode- I can watch a movie about lovers, for instance, and live a decent life, but an hour or so later I'm wondering whether I'm losing my grip on fighting ability. I can't focus on social issues nearly as much- I spend more time stressing over what reactions I should have to certain situations than thinking about what kind of girl I'd like. I've already figured out the best way to take down a man if someone with a .45 jumped into my classroom and started shooting it up, I know hundreds of weak points to hit people at, and constantly train to keep myself ready for the fight that might someday happen again. The only good results are that a) nobody wants to try to fight me, b) the fools that try quickly lose, and c) it's impossible for me to drink, smoke or do drugs because my natural reactions won't let me do anything that might impair my fighting ability in the future. I've been through more fights and sent more people to the hospital than I care to admit, but that was years ago. I've changed now, and the fight or flight response in me shouldn't be active anymore- but it seems stuck to 'on'. Please help? How can I stop daydreaming, dreaming, and focusing on fighting? It feels like I'm ruining the best years of my life waiting for a fight to come.  more

Voting Question: Why is it seen as acceptable for underaged college students to drink?

First of all, I never want to drink alcohol ever. It's a waste of money and seriously is pointless. My boyfriend has the same view. We're seniors this year and soon will both go to the same college together. I've been reading random books at Barnes & Noble about college. Books like How to Survive College, College 101 and things like that. Every single one of them mentions how you should dump your high school boyfriend so you can go drink and party your freshman year of college. Excuse me? I'll only be 19 my freshman year of college, the legal age to drink is 21. Why is this behavior condoned? These books made it seem normal for 18/19 year olds to go out and get drunk their first year of college. Why don't colleges crack down on this issue a little harder? Am I the only teenager who actually wants to go to college for its primary purpose - to attain a higher education? Why do people think high school relationships, (more specifically, my loving relationship that I have spent the last 3 years of my life in) should be thrown out so that I can go out and get drunk and have meaningless flings with pathetic men who are infested with STDs?  more

Resolved Question: What would a more open-minded Liberal America look like?

Here is what I want to see in America: 2010 November: Democrats gain seats in both the House and the Senate 2011 January: Public Option passes for Universal Healthcare 2011 February: US Government proposes High-speed rail system project New York to San Francisco at 600 miles per hour....hires tons of US engineers, appropriates money to higher education for science/engineers 2011 March: New Public Housing projects, Government-subsidized intentional communities, eco-villages 2011 April: US Government creates a social program to teach Americans how to manufacture their own iphones and blackberries, how to grow their own vegetables, how to fuel their cars with vegetable oils without octane, so they can become self-reliant of oil corporations 2011 May: US Government begins a massive Nuclear Defense Shield Proposal that would include eliminating all nuclear warheads and improving shields to protect us from foreign invaders 2011 June: USA finally passes national gay marriage....gays, lesbians, bi, transgenders celebrate... 2011 July: (Government introduces a summer taxcut for anyone earning less than $500,000 pays 0% of income tax, every penny over 500,000 taxes at the 39.5% Bill Clinton taxrate) Beginning 2011 August: A massive, and I mean massive effort begins to start cutting programs we don't need.... The first big cut: Pulling out of Iraq and Afghanistan Cutting back big on Medicare/Medicaid and health services and instead promoting in-house volunteer clinics Eliminating 100% of bank bailouts For K-12, elimination of the public school system - instead Government funds the self-reliance programs We would eliminate the Recovery Act Eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Agriculture, eliminate the Department of Energy...we don't need one when everyone is not self-reliant Eliminate Social Security....free up that money.....instead we would have the US reward states that exempt seniors of all property taxes and rent.....it would become a states issue We would eliminate so many Government programs during the last quarter of 2011 that we'd have a Budget Surplus, Public Option Healthcare, a High-speed rail system, an end to oil addition, elimination of the drug war.....it would be a whole new America! Why put everything into health and safety when we're not safe if we cant be modern and we have no Govt budget?  more

Resolved Question: College entrance questions?

Just looking for some input and opinions. I attend Grimsley High School, in greensboro, NC. I'm a rising senior, and i will be applying for college next year. My unweighted gpa is a 3.85 and weighted is a 4.9 presently( before senior year starts), and ill probably be able to get over a 5 by the time im sending in midterm grades. But i can't seem to get as good of a SAT score as my peers that are in the same level classes as me. I'm 20 something in the class of 400 or so, so im close to the top 5 %, and i make better grades than a lot of the people that are scoring higher than me. I'm wondering if im just a bad standardized test taker or not. For example, my girlfriend scored like... 100 more points on the writing section of the sat, and 200 total points. I think she did better in math too, even though i was one of the best people in my math classes, scoring 99 percentile in the EOCs. But she has lower grades than i do, and the teachers give me higher scores for essays/ tests, etc. What do you guys think is the problem? I am killing myself for having better grades but lower SAT scores... I would also like some input about another issue. I am out of county going to grimsley because my mother works there. If i went to the assigned school i would be going to Trinity High School. There my friend took AP US History and got an a for the year, in other words, a 6 to add onto his weighted gpa and a 4 for his unweighted. However, grimsley is one of the top 100 Highschools in the nation according to some survey or w/e, and i got a b for the year. But we just received our AP scores and he got a 2 and i got a 4. I could probably be first in class at trinity, but is that ultra grade inflation or what? I am glad that i transfered to Grimlsey though, because of the competition, and education that gives more that other schools.  more

Resolved Question: How can I divorce my soldier husband?

Well, two years ago I made the mistake of marrying at a young age (18) to a soldier in the marine core. Well actually I had dated him before he joined all through out our high school years. I chose to continue my education by attending a university ( UCLA) while he bought into all the army propaganda and lies and enlisted in the marine core. He now in currently deployed in Afghanistan fighting for some misguided reasons and probably just bring more hurt and havoc upon the innocent people of Afghanistan. All thought out his deployment and time spent away for army related issues, I have realized how little love he felt for me, he actually made the choice my abandoning me to go half way across the world to have an " adventure" as the army claims. I have already begun to pack and leave but I am just left wondering if there is away I could end our marriage now. I really just want to move on form this mistake. Do I have to wait for him to come back?  more

Resolved Question: Who can edit this essay?

Stepping onto Middle School Evolving in a dominantly Filipino environment where everyone pursued the motto of education prioritization, my fellow classmates demonstrated aspects of intelligence and consideration. Since everyone endeavored conformity, it was effortless for us to adhere with one another. After a series of altering residences, my serene family settled in the current location we live today where I transferred to the neighboring elementary school by default. During my youth, children were naturally keen to become acquainted with new people so no social issues applied then. However, since I yearned for my former elementary school classmates, I switched schools a year later to graduate with my comrades. Due to transportation issues, I moved to my neighboring middle school permanently that initiated a new life with unfamiliar people and unaccustomed surroundings. Little did I know that this miniscule alteration could create such a peculiar challenge to my life. Transitioning from elementary to middle school was arduous for me as I underwent changes through people, maturity, and independence. When I first stepped onto the hallways of Aiea Intermediate School, the experience felt as if I disembarked off a plane onto an alien nation without prior knowledge of their language and culture. From the diversity of students of my new educational institution, it was rather troublesome to fit in and communicate with them. Without the amenity of talking to anybody, I gained the irreversible mental state of bashfulness that lurked me through middle school. Bringing my puerile mentality to middle school wasn't intelligible as people often associated me as a “dork” or “nerd” in contrast to noticing my astute mind that my former elementary classmates saw in me. Back in elementary school, my mother would constantly be involved in my social and educational life and frequently question the assignments I was committed to or the type of people I was with. Due to my maturity through my progression to a teenager, I had do handle my school responsibilities independently. Surrounding alienated humans was a provocation that I had to acclimate in order to approach prosperity. Adapting to meeting new people in an eccentric environment without critical support was a challenge that my transition from elementary to middle school demanded me. As no one knew me to a personal basis, I transformed into a taciturn individual with the predicament to adjust due to my decreased interpersonal communication skills. Fundamentally, I inaugurated my life to meet new people and contrive a revolution in personality to blend in this contemporary environment. Gradually, I adapted to new tastes in hip hop music and humanized television shows that typically parted with maturity. Furthermore, there were no acquaintances that I could consult whenever someone threw scandalous remarks towards me. Unquestionably, I may have just confronted either my parents of my counselor but I stamped self-determination into me to acknowledge my advancement as an individual. Through the augmentation of my mental strength, I handled people's insults and attaining the most important lesson in middle school simply by ignoring them and continuing my life. With my life in my hands, I had to be in control of my actions and decision-making to steer to the direction of success. Now that my burdensome path of stepping onto a new life had passed, I feel that this was a stupendous high school preparation for me. I didn't suffer any difficulties as a high school freshman as it upheld my renowned life. At one viewpoint, I had ample friends to from academic trepidations through reposing conversations. My peers eventually began to acknowledge my abilities and tolerated me as a normal high school student. With development, my childish optimistic personality altered to a teenage pessimistic one while being prepared to react to teenagers to fit right into my people. Although my sanguine thoughts diminish temporarily at school, my bright life resumes with the ruckus of having two active siblings at home for me to illuminate my day. Despite my mentality to adhere to my heritage goal of laborious studying, I earned the right to do what I want in my high school career. I became a better person with the ability to handle my own problems and journeyed to the next level to resolve dilemmas of others. With problems that lay ahead of me, I am contended that my middle school background taught me to mingle with new people, handle a new age group, and obtain independence that I can use as life skills to bring with me to college and beyond. With every step in life, there are always challenges that run though the life cycle. As I evolve in the future, I will once again stage in a new environment with a diverse span of people to congregate with. My middle school memories may prevent or cure life change discomfort in the future. Life doesn't t  more

Resolved Question: I'm so confused. What school should I go to?

So my parents sent me to a private Catholic school called RCS for my 8th grade year. The people were mostly great and they are so nice. I got to spend the night with one girl and she lives in this beautiful Victorian manor and it was so fun because the girls are so crazy. But I hated going to Mass every Wednesday and the teachers would openly mock your beliefs (if you weren't Catholic), and I never took that from anyone (because I am atheist). Also, my mom had to drive me to school every day and I could see she didn't very much enjoy that. At MP, I would just ride the bus. Around the end of the year, people were crying and they are all so close knit, the staff and students are like family. But I've told my parents that I do not wish to attend RCS, so they are sending me to the public school called MP. All my old friends are at MP but there aren't quality people there like back at RCS. And now I don't know what to do. Should I go to MP where I probably won't even get a good education or should I go back to RCS for freshman year (my parents can afford it so money's not an issue)? My godmother told me that she thought it was sweet how the girls from RCS wrote on my Facebook wall that they would miss me if I never came back. And if I went to RCS, I'd have so many more valuable high school memories like Christmas parties and all. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. Have a great day. -Bruna P.S. It's only mid-July now but registration for RCS starts next week so I need to make a decision by then.  more

Voting Question: Can I make it to a D1AA or D1A i think its D1 football team?

Ok people hear is my story Ive been flying under the radar for a while now and I think I can open up some coaches eyes at the next level. I started my junior and senior year in high school as WR/TE. The reason for TE is because our team converted to a closed offense with wing backs and with no receivers. At this position I caught 5 balls for 99 yards the whole season which is not bad in our 90 run/10 pass. The outstanding stat was that i averaged (22.5 yards after the catch.) I played my whole senior season on a gimpy hamstring which bothered me throughout. No i didnt send my highlight tape to any coahes after the season because I felt slow the reason being my hamstring. issue. My one step and go off the line kills the opposing teams at times. Route running is ok not solid Ability to beat jams is ok at times. Catching the ball is good but could be better in clutch catches/ So pretty much Im an average receiver that stands at 6'1 and weighs in at 190 pounds. I believe I can work on all my negatives and turn them into positives by the time spring comes in 2011. Ive been hitting the weight room since May so and Im making good progress. Ofcourse the plan is to walk on and tryout but I dont knw if I have a fair chance. Physical Attributes: Bench: 225 (1) Squat: 325 (5) Power cleans: 185 (5) started doing power cleans my senior. Short Shuttle: 4.49 Vert: 30.5 inches Broad Jump: 9'0 FT 40: 4.58s It just seems like I need a little more work then Im there you know? I am very determined and its all I think about a chance to play at the college level. First Team: 7 freshmen WR Second Team 5 Freshmen WR Ya those are the two teams I wanna tryout for, ya I knw im out numbered but I dont care. All the other teams in my state including D2 and D3 have about 10-11 WR on the squad thats crazy. Ya im still looking out of state but cant afford it. Anyway I just wanna know your honest opinion on do you think I can make it to D1AA or D1A football. I just think that I played in the wrong offense but thats another story to talk about. Till this day ive been working out 5 days a week. I even quit my job because im so determined. Dont get me wrong im a smart kid averaged a 3.55 in highschool, and I already knw what I want to study in college education is my first priority and football is second jus for my goals right now. BUT ANYWAY WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK SORRY IT WAS SO LONG, BE AS CRITICAL AS YOU FEEL YOU NEED TO BE, NO FEELINGS HURT HERE CUZ I USE THEM AS FUEL.  more

Voting Question: Do Probation Officers have to come to IEP meetings?

I am 18 still in High School, but is in Special Education. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, I now hold the rights to my education. However about a month ago I felt that it was inappropriate that the probation officers of Los Angeles County came to the meeting. I had nothing against them but, The team that set up my IEP was agreeing with me that I should be sent to a regular high school, however one probation officer was trying to go his way undermining my rights but also the decision of the IEP. The Alternative High School's Principal agreed with me on the issue that I should not return considering that the services provided on his campus were not enough to keep there and also the reason for being sent to an Alternative High School were ILLEGAL! The School's Psychologist agreed with my decision on returning to the normal high school under an IEP. Representatives of the school district were sort of disagreeing but gave me the okay to proceed with the process of me continuing in a normal high school But the real question comes down to this. In the next IEP, where we will discuss my plans on the Fall and Spring Semesters, I wish to have none of the probation officers there, since they are more focus on discipline rather than me having a proper education with the needs of my IEP fulfilled. According to the probation officer, I might follow the wrong crowd. However I am now 18 years and obviously I can chose my own friends wisely. I am sure he wants to get his way and not respect the decision of the team setting this up. Justmeinthisworld I would like to say thank you but I was placed illegally not because of probation but because the district believed that I was a Special Day Student, which I am not. My older IEP said was to be at a normal high school at least 96 % of percent of the time taking general education classes with frequent visits from the psychologist. Probation officers can go with their way. In fact the IEP is considered a legal document which must fulfill. justmeinthisworld I am sure you are human but this was just a simple mistake, what he did is undermining the decisions of the district and also the team. In an IEP everyone is an equal member and he can't influence anybody when the decision is 5 against 1. Second it is my IEP not his and definitely it is to serve my interest. Second this Alternative High School does not meet the requirement. Second they did not even meet in CST discussing the move. That is why it is illegal. Third you must not judge. I go to school everyday. No reason to be in Probation, I attend classes that other kids in probation do not have. I attend Calculus AB, Physics, and US History AP. Also if you want the 10 points, do not judge otherwise leave this question alone.  more

Resolved Question: How can I get started on moving to California knowing that I am 16?

Ok I have asked some interesting questions in the past and I have listened to both negative and positive notes. I have research on California for 3 months I know that I wish to pursue my dream in acting but for now I know I want a good standing job to pay the rent. I will continue my education on an online high school, my mom has given me permission to go and I know that she will help me move knowing that I am 5 hours by plane away from So Cal. This all seems crazy but I am mature and very smart I am at the top of my sophomore class and I have met 18 year old that act 12. I feel that I am mentally perhaps 20 and I have lived a harder life than ay ordinary teen I was born with a one-in-a-billion hear condition and I know things know one else knows with my class. The issue here though is I seek advice on packing up and going to Venice Beach CA, I know that prices are high but here in FL neither are they cheep here please list some websites of good apartments and tell me what you think but no harsh insults please. Thank you. I have an education in acting as well, my great grand mother was an actress in the olden days and I have much expeiance and wish to bring my talent to he big city!  more

Resolved Question: Why is there often a level of confusion about many of today's boxers' regional backgrounds?

For example, the Klitschkos are often considered by some people as Russians, when they are not, they are Ukrainians. Ukraine is bigger than Germany and UK combined, it may be a former Soviet Satellite, but so was Mongolia and North Korea, but it doesn't mean they are Russians and the Soviet Union does not exist no longer! Prince Naseem Hahmed, Amir Khan, and Kostya Tszyu are not considered Asians because they are not Orientals? I am not trying to take credit for their success, but I am only leaning to the scientific facts that is proven not by theory but but by evidence. You dont have to be Oriental to be Asian! But Kostya Tsyzu is of Siberian and KOREAN stock, who was born in Russia, yet some people say he isn't Asian. 100% of Siberia is in the Asian continent and shares a border with Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and China. Pakistanis, Arabs, Iranians, Indians are Asians, they are from the Continent of Asia, which makes Prince Naseem Hahmed and Amir Khan Asian by scientific and academic facts! People say Henry Armstrong is only black, but by facts, he is only 25% black, he is 50% Native American and 25% White. His father was biracial who was half white half black while his mother was pure 100% Native American. But he is still black to most fans, even if he has a higher percentage of Native American blood. Armenians are not Anglo Saxon Europeans, Armenia is next to Turkey and Iran!, which predominant Muslim countries in Asia. Armenia does not share a border with German, Britain, or France. But people already assume that Arthur Abraham is German Aryan white boxer even though he is pure 100% Armenian, which Armenia situates in the Asian continent. The reason I asked this question and believe me my friends I don't get into issues of nationalities, war of words with other groups, etc., is because every time I ask a question which sometimes have nothing to do with nationality or race, some people eventually say I am Filipino so I am not capable of being an intelligent boxing fan and that I robbed other people's credit and make them Asian. No, I am American first before I am Asian. I grew up in the U.S, got my education here, met my fiance' here who is not Filipino, and the majority of my memories is about living in America. I can be an American too even as an Asian boxing fan. :-) Please, only mature answers only and no trolls and fake accounts. Thank you! :-) http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AproBD8MxWZvQc73D0Bn8JT6DH1G;_ylv=3?qid=20100710224013AAdgsIH http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiShbbU9.2hBdLN6lzo1GRHty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100115152024AAOsVFB @ Super Joe, hello there! Interesting note about Bruce Lee! Also Lyoto Machida is half white-Brazilian being his mother of Italian-Brazilian descent and half Asian. Anyways bro, the Aryans came from the Central Steppes of Asia and Northern India and Iran, they are not original natives of Europe. They moved to other parts of the Middle East and into Europe and because of the climate change and alterations of living conditions, their physical attributes changed, but scientifically speaking, even Iranians, Pakistanis, Arabs, Turks, Armenians, and Europeans are all Caucasoids. Caucasian is a term for people who are bredded as partially Cau=Caucasoid and Asian=Asian, thus implementing Caucasian with both European and Asian genetics. :-) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aryan_race http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasian_race @whatwasithinking, excellent sociological analysis! :-) @ Super Joe, thanks for a very intelligent response! @ odlanyer, very nice input my friend! Resolved Question: Would you put your child in a high school that was known for sports or academics?

My ex and I are debating this issue, which is at least 3 years away. Our 10 year old is a 2 sport athelete. He plays baseball and football. He is pretty good now, but there is no telling if he will be good when he is ready for high school, or not. His wish is to be a high school or college sports coach (of course this may change over time.) We live in an area of Los Angeles that has severely underperforming schools, so there are a number of charter schools in the area. Our daughter attends a school that boasts a 100% college acceptance rate for graduates to 4 year universities & 85% of those students are still in college by their junior year. My son will be attending the middle school, and we are considering having him attend the high school as well. However, the charter schools have poor sports programs that are more like intramurals against other charter schools than true high school sports programs. If my son was to go to the high school there is very little chance of him getting an athletic scholarship to college. In contrast, the high schools in the area (both public & private) are perrenial power houses and send a lot of kids to college and eventually the pros. These schools include (Dorsey, Crenshaw, Loyola, Mater Dei, Serra, etc). My goal isn't to put sports above academics; however, I do want to afford my child all the opportunities available to him. The chances of my son being tops in his class and getting an academic scholarship to a top college are slim coming out of this school. My daughter has a 4.0 at the school and she is in tight competition with kids who have higher averages (with college credits factored in). My ex believes my son should attend the same school as the academics are excellent. However, I believe that we should wait until he is in the 8th grade and see if he gets recruited to one of the local private schools (which we can't afford without scholarships) or one of the power house public schools. Even though the public schools have poor academics, they do have magnet programs that do provide a good education. There is always the chance that my son (who is already short for his age) may not develop physically and this won't be an issue; however, in the off chance that he does have a growth spurt and is recruited...do you think that we should weigh all the options and go to the best school for him both athletically AND academically?  more

Voting Question: Hello, am 30 years old and am need help finding a way to pay for Invitro.?

I am 30 years old and am currently in my 5th year teaching. I moved to Columbia, SC in 2005 when I was hired at my first school and moved here to Las Vegas, NV in August 2009. I currently teach for Connections Academy. We are an online, public, K-12 school that exists all over the United States. I have a BA in English Language and Literature, a M.Ed. in Education, Instructional Technology and a M.Ed. in Education, Divergent Learning. I love learning and am especially interested in the neurology of learning. I taught in a school for children who were in Juvenile Jail and the psych ward or drug rehab for one reason or another. This is what got me interested in the neurology of learning and teaching students with disabilities; at this school every child was labeled MH, LD, ED, or MD. I have found that I have a gift with students who other teachers can’t seem to reach. It may be because I went through school facing a lot of the same issues as they did; I have dyslexia and ADD. I had to teach myself how I learn; because I knew school was my only way out of WV and no one else cared if it was harder for me. On another note, I am also a writer and have a published Novella "The Echoes of Life" and am currently working on publishing a book of poetry and writing a serial killer novel. I have dedicated my entire life to helping children in any way I can. I started college Pre-Med and thought I was going to be a pediatric neurologist. My High Scholl Guidance Counselor told me I wasn't going to be a Doctor that I would end up a Teacher. I laughed at her. I was Pre-med for 2 years and all of my electives were English classes. At the end of my sophomore year I saw my first cadaver; this was a life changing event for me, I knew I could not cut on a cadaver. I immediately switched my major to English Language and Literature. When I graduated with my bachelors in English I realized you could not do anything with it. So I enrolled in Law school, I was going to do child and family law. It took me 3 week to determine I hated it, to me everyone was trying their hardest to make you look bad and make themselves look better. Subsequently I worked in a group home with Adults whom had severe Mental and Physical disabilities, for two years. After I was there a month I started teaching at the school my clients would attend during the day. This got me thinking about teaching. I looked into programs and started at American InterContinental University, where I got my M.Ed. in Education, Instructional Technology. Once I finished my degree I was hired in SC and moved in July of 05. My first day teaching I thought I had made a huge mistake, I was nervous and scared; until the students came. By 10 minutes into my first class I knew this is exactly what I should have been doing the whole time. Due to the dedication to teaching and my upbringing that I needed to be careful until I was in the right position to have children I put it off. Then I got sick and was dignosed with PID. My fallopian tubes were destroyed and shortly after I was diagnosed with Endometriosis and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and have gone through a lot of testing, procedures and had surgery. It has been determined that I have to have IVF to get pregnant. Furthermore, my egg count is decreasing rapidly so I have to start soon. I have wanted kids since I was 10 and started babysitting. My entire life is about children and I really am scared that it may not happen. I am trying every mean possible to come up with financing. I may have a lot of degrees and have been teaching 5 years but I don’t make a salary comparable to other teachers in Nevada. Furthermore when the economy went bad my boyfriends business dried up. When I was transferred to Nevada he found a job with a local sign company making $21 an hour. However 1 week after we arrived they called and told him their contracts got froze and they wouldn’t have work till November. November turned into February, and in February they quit calling and returning calls. My fiance got a job at the local gas station in March after months of applying and interviewing everywhere. So all of our savings are gone and I have quite a lot of debt. It is like in the last two years everything that could go wrong has. I’m working with a finance counselor now and trying to get us back to where we should be, however, it will take a while to pay the debt. We can afford a child and I will give up everything I have in order to do so. I can’t keep putting this off just because my situation isn’t perfect. I have looked all over but cannot find where or how to get help. I applied for a medical loan but was denied. If you know any other resources you are willing to share with me I am more than willing to accept them and would appreciate it immensely. Thank you, I have Insurance, but it does not cover any infertility treatments.  more

Resolved Question: I would like to enquire about BIRCHAM INT'L UNIVERSITY (BIU), if anyone knows that it’s not a fake institue?

Actually i m planning to get my further studies through distance learning from BIU I have come to know about by GOOGLE and its offering many online courses that i was looking for since long time.. But As per encyclopaedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bircham_International_University CRITICISM & CONTROVERSY Bircham is listed as a questionable non-accredited school by Quack watch.[24] A 2003 article in South Florida's CityLink magazine reported that Oregon education officials had said that Bircham was "totally bogus" and quoted former FBI agent Allen Ezell, who investigated diploma mills as part of the agency's Operation Dipscam, as describing some of Bircham's promotional claims as "pure hokum".[25] The Oregon Office of Degree Authorization alerts the public that Oxford International University has "no connection to legitimate Oxford University in Great Britain".[26] In July 2007 a Mexican newspaper reported that the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) of Mexico had issued a warning against Bircham International and ten other foreign institutions identified as having committed academic fraud.[27] In April 2008 the Nairobi Business Daily reported that Bircham International University was operating in Kenya without authorization, "wooing unsuspecting students to its distance learning classes". An official of Kenya's Commission for Higher Education was quoted as warning that BIU degree certificates would not be recognised.[7] In March 2010 the same newspaper published a correction, stating that the April 2008 story had been provided by a person "who at the time of publication had a partnership dispute with Bircham over rights to represent the university in Kenya". The correction stated that BIU "is a Spanish institution of distance learning and is in good standing with Spanish authorities that offers alternatives to formal adult higher education specifically aimed at adult working professionals" and that its programmes "can be legalized and validated by the Embassy of Kenya in the USA or Spain despite the institution not being registered by the Commission for Higher Education in Kenya".[7] So anyone knows plz help me on the same. or let me know online universties offering courses in IT enginnering. I am residing in QATAR. Thanks  more

Voting Question: Is being a lawyer too risky?

Ok. I am entering freshman year of college. I have been really considering a career in law. However, in high school I always took advanced science and math courses. So the logical thing one would do would be to follow up with a career in medicine or physics. My grades and standardized test scores really speak for themselves when I say that I am confident that if I pursue my education in law, I could manage a 3.8+ GPA and 175+ LSAT by the time I apply. The same goes for medical school with 36+ MCAT. The way I see it is this: LAW: something I am interested in, but am very worried about vigorous competition even if I attend a T14 law school. MEDICAL SCHOOL: i will be honest, science really bores me even though i excel at it, physics, chem, and bio come very easy, but the more i take them, the more i feel it to be utterly unexciting PHARMACY SCHOOL: this is what everyone tells me to go into. because supposedly its not hard, competitive, and makes 100k+ guaranteed. but to me, i have this ego and feel like if i go into pharmacy, i am selling myself short. thats how i see it. anyone who goes into pharmacy didnt really know what to do with their lives. no offense.. to me, money is more important than the career itself, as long as the career is respectable. i want to make around 300k+ a year. i have been raised in a family where money wasnt really an issue, and I plan to keep it that way. so i'm wondering, if i get a JD and MBA joint degree from a T14 law school, can I fulfill this lifestyle?  more

Resolved Question: I owe money to N.Y. State Higher Education, my college, and I need help?

I owe money to N.Y. State Higher Education, my college, and I have to pain a loan forgiveness bill for 6 months before New York State will begin loaning me money again. But with my old college, I owe about 8,000 and it is preventing me from obtaining my academic transcripts. I don't work so I don't know how I'm going to pay for my transcripts sooner. I don't want to have to wait years and years just save enough money to pay something like that. (I have been out of college for a couple of years, and I haven't finished yet. I had some health problems that led to collecting disability and social security, but I do not work. I feel like I might be able to go back to college, if I take my time and not rush into anything, but I feel stuck because I don't know what I should do first to resolve my financial issues. Should I even worry about my transcripts? Do I need them in order to be accepted at another college? Or should I just wait to pay for my transcripts, and get some type of payment plan with the college? And then worry about everything else? I can't pay everything at the same time, so I need to know what's more important and what should I start paying on first?  more

Voting Question: does it matter that i take these courses in high school?

i'm going to be a junior in high school this fall and i was wondering does it matter if you don't take classes that relate to the career that you want to pursue? i have set in my mind already that i want to be a laywer, i think specifically a medical malpractice lawyer. but the classes that i signed up for for this year are mostly medical things. my classes are: Honors English III Honors Pre-Calculus AP US History Greater Issues (a class that goes with American History that enhances reading and analyzing skills through the use of primary sources) Honors French 3 Honors Chemistry Health Science Technology Medical Terminology They have a Law Education class that does case studies, mock trials, role-plays, and debates but i didn't sign up for it before because i just decided recently that i wanted to become a lawyer. I'm sure I can tweek my schedule to get this course instead of maybe Medical Terminology? Should I do that or just leave my schedule the way it is? Do colleges look at all of the courses that you take in high school? Would they care if I took these courses instead of the law-related class?  more

Resolved Question: Gov Christie? Are we overlooking other wasteful education spending besides teachers? How about this?

SO, is he also checking "wasteful tax monies" which comes directly under sneaky Board of Education members? LAKEWOOD — Shoddy record-keeping and poor oversight among school officials here between 2006 and 2008 resulted in routine overspending of accounts, considerable under-budgeting, missing equipment and wasted money — including $3,900 to send an empty bus to Washington — according to a scathing state audit of the district. Some $2.5 million more was spent on salaries over two fiscal years than what had been budgeted, including $1.8 million in 2007 when the district was more than $1 million in the red, the audit found. Auditors also saw a potential conflict of interest in Michael I. Inzelbuch's dual roles as the Board of Education attorney and nonpublic special education consultant. nonpublic schools and reserves most of his private practice to suing other districts on the issue. Inzelbuch is among the highest paid board attorneys in the state, earning $326,000 in the last school year and another $123,000 — plus benefits — in consulting fees, though those fees are paid by the state. Some other audit findings: — A study of 103 employees in 2008 found that 33 percent were overpaid by $45,000 in extra compensation and that Edward W. Luick was paid $295,000 in unused sick, vacation and personal time when he retired as schools superintendent in 2008. — A look at four private schools revealed that 29 computers, printers and digital cameras — purchased through the district under the state's Non-Public Technology Initiative Program — were missing. — Inappropriate payments from the payroll department totaled about $5,000, including spending at places unrelated to payroll matters, such as to J.C. Penney. In an example of wasteful spending, according to the audit, the district paid $3,900 to send an empty bus to Washington to shuttle teachers on a business trip after already spending $5,000 on round-trip train tickets to get them there. "Certain questionable items will be referred to the Division of Criminal Justice," the audit stated. Apparently none of you get it. I asked if Christie was overlooking Other wasteful spending re schools Besides teachers. This has nothing to do with President Obama. Personally, Christie is a one term governor. As with other politicians, there are always those that have to be 'paid back' when Christie (and others) come into office. I've heard nothing about 'wasteful spending' re School Board members separate and apart from teacher woes. And apparently the financial wasteful spending re the schools reaches much further than teachers, And it is probably found in nearly every district in state of New Jersey. Christie needs to cover every area's Board of Education, that is, unless he has something to hide... Here the money is already spent....will Christie attack this type of stealing? or will he let it slide.  more

Voting Question: Im turning 21 on oct. I graduated 2008 and since then i havent done anything much to progress as far as?

education goes and now its just killing me. I have been stuck with a security job for past 2 and a half yrs. From the time graduated till 2010 Jan. I didnt really accomplish anything in school because i used to live with parents and there was to much disstractions and drama. They also wouldnt let me continue with the career im interested with. So i figured ill never get anywhere with life and moved out. Progression made since the beginning of this year was i moved out of my parents house got my own place now, got my own car, paid all my debt's off that was worth $4000 or so, let my sister move in with me but she messed up her oppertunity so i had to have her move back to parents, Had some issues with the 1st truck i had (spend a lot of money on since the truck was only way of transportaion for me), ended up buying a better car now w/ God's blessing and gf's help. So now i have a debt free life but im dissapointed at my self because im not able to get a better job any where or i have no degree to show other than H.S diploma. My priority IS college but in my situation im forced to say Work is too, because i dnt qualify for Financial Aid. No other source of income to pay rent, gas, cell phone, insurance and stuff every mnth. My question is, Is there any job that i can do which is in demand (even if i have to go to school for a few days or so that's ok) so i can get paid more, job is much more reliable than security and schedule is a little fixed and i mean like a blue collar job or something? The reason i want a blue collar job and i dnt want to do anything like Nursing is because i dnt want to go to school for too long when i know im not gonna stay with it for too long its just temporary till i get back to school and accomplish my higher education. Meanwhile, sumething so i can pay bills off and help gf financially too.  more

Resolved Question: What should I do about a girl living at my house?

About a year and a half ago, my father and I noticed one of my friends had a very neglectful family and she was wearing bad clothes. She also never showered it seems like, and she ate a lot of food when she was over. We started letting her stay over night around then, and soon after that- it seemed as if the arrangement was a daily occurrence. She has been living at our house on and off for about a year now. She is a very nieve, pretty, and curvy 13 year old. She had been sexually abused before we obtained her, and some pick on her because they call her a whore. She has been raped at least twice, and a lot of other sexual activity has been going on. Now, she is having consensual sex with multiple people. That is one of the issues. Some other issues are: her dental problems, her health, her education, her emotional problems and her current living situation. Her teeth are atrocious and she has NEVER been to a dentist. Also, she hasn't been to the doctor since the 3rd grade. The only time I know she visited anything close to a pediatrician was a gynecologist a few months ago after she thought she was pregnant. She has no interest in life, and is easily bored. Her education reflects it- she had a couple of Fs and few Ds. She loves writing poetry, and is very good at it. I want her to get through high school so she can get a good job and not be bored with life. Her mother is bipolar and means well, but doesn't give her kids the love and care that a proper mother should. I am in high school (I will not disclose age), but I am only at my father's house on the weekends. They have problems, because she is very unruly. It is stressing my father out, and he is trying to get things together because he is trying to stop drinking and smoking for his fiance. There have been harsh words spoken between both of them. She needs us to care for her it feels like. Once, she went home for a few weeks after Christmas. The teacher said she smelt really bad, and as trying to help her out. She excused her for the rest of the hour, and told her to take a shower in the locker rooms. Needless to say, she came back VERY quickly. Lately, she has been getting more and more permiscuous, and Dad and her are tense sometimes. I haven't had a night alone with my Dad and my sister in months. Everything has changed since she has been with us. I feel like I have two options: 1) Adopt her and keep her on lock down 2) Tell her parents to buck up and to get their sh*t together and actually take care of her kids. What should I do about the girl living at my house?  more

Resolved Question: What am I constantly stuck at entry-level status?

It has been nearly a year since I have been out of work as far as a full time job. I have been doing freelance work recently. My question is why am I constantly still only qualified for an entry level job. I am in my mid-30s. I went to college upon graduating high school and received my first Bachelor's degree at 22. Throughout the years, I have obtained two more Associate degrees in similar fields. I am also currently working on my Master's. So, I definitely believe in updating my skills via education. Up until the past year, I have always worked full-time and I sometimes even a second job to make ends meet. But, it seems like they were always entry-level jobs. They all had very low pay. I realize that I can't use the economy as the only excuse. Despite what was occurring in the world, my personal economy has always been bad. Approximately ten years ago, the job market was supposedly booming and I was at my worst financial lows. I guess my question is am I just not in the right field? By the way, my B.A. is in English/journalism and my two Associate's are in the graphic/web design field. I am currently working on a master's in web design. I know I changed my field a bit from English/journalism, but many people do not work in the same field as their degrees. My work experience primarily lies in graphic design, but it is such low pay. Like I said, I think it is more than the job market. Do I have to face that I lack talent? Do I not really want to pursue my chose field? Am I not working hard enough? Is it self-esteem issues? How can I get beyond this? Believe me, I don't mind starting at the bottom. Everyone has to. But, it seems like I am constantly at the bottom.  more

Resolved Question: advice for a new teacher?

I'm a first-year teacher at a private middle/high school in Mississippi (it is a year-round school). I am fresh out of graduate school, and it has been quite a transition. Despite the fact that I strive to be incredibly consistent in my classroom, I have had major discipline issues....especially with some of the very students who are some of the best behaved in my colleague's classes. I have tried reward systems, detentions, writing assignments. Things work, but on the whole, I have twice the problems of other teachers. The only thing I do different is that I do not use corporal punishment---something that most every teacher at my school does use. My colleagues use it rarely, as a last resort, but they do paddle....and I never have at all. It's not that I'm necessarily anti-spanking, as a last resort it can be effective for some kids, but I just never thought it was really the teacher's place to do that....and I was taught those same ideas in my education classes. So its hard to imagine me paddling someone else's kids (even though their parents have signed waivers). On the other hand though I can't continue to have my classroom be wild like it is, and I can't think of ANYthing else that I do any differently than my colleagues. Does anyone have any advice?  more

Resolved Question: Volunteer Work Abroad?

Hello all! Has anybody had any experience with volunteer work away from their resident countries? Im a UK citizen and i would love help those in need. Im not one of those pretentious people who think it'll be a holiday and only do these things to impress people back home, i want to do this whole-heartedly. That, and im on a downwards spiral academically due to attendance and my general disdain and skepticism for the higher education, and socially due to anxiety, family issues, pressures etc. I've been seeing a "therapist" recently for panic attacks, and she suggested that this sort of thing would probably be good for me too. My family genuinely think im a waste, layabout and my sisters think im a "stoner" and all my friends are heavy drug users and i just want to get away from all that shit. I turn 18 at the end of this year so i can legally do what i want after that. However im still under the vice of my parents. Im Pakistani by descent, and can speak fluent Urdu and i would love to help in my native country. I have visited 7 or 8 times (and once more in two weeks) in my life for generally two months at a time so i know it well and have come to terms with the problems. How could i go about volunteering here? Thanks. And if you have any experience with this sort of thing, let me know. Also, it wont exclusively be a bunch of overly emotional self righteous rich kids that ill have to work with, right?  more

Resolved Question: What would be the requirements to become a teacher in the Netherlands if moving from the USA ?

I have a Bachelor's degree and am currently working towards a Master's degree (am considering changing it to a master's degree that can get me an American license to teach high school level English). My partner does not currently hold a degree but is working at an American school to get a degree and license in American Elementary Education. If we moved to the Netherlands like we have talked about recently, it would be under the immigration policy that allows same-sex couples who do not have federal rights in their country to move to the Netherlands. Does anybody have experience with this policy or with how the Dutch education system teaching requirements? I'm not sure what else we would be able to do there (unless I get my PhD first) and am curious to see if moving there would even be a real possibility. Thanks in advance to any help (i.e. links to immigration requirements for this issue, dutch teaching requirements, etc.) Also, please note that neither of us know Dutch but are willing to learn, so it might be best to consider our possibilities in terms of international schools (especially if having an American teaching certification first) rather than the public or special schools.  more

Voting Question: Is a local diploma bad, will it hold me back?

I live in NYC, I don't know if anyone has read my previous questions, but I didn't do so well in my senior year of high school. I went through a tough time dealing with emotional issues (depression and things that made me feel like nothing was worth it). I felt horrible after I saw the result of the way I was acting, I have NEVER been a bad student, in fact all my teachers were surprised with my failure. I tried though, I failed my senior year but I put in my effort and even while still dealing with my issues I signed up for a credit recovery program, I am now happy to say that I was called in to get my diploma. I regret not doing things right on time. But I'm 18 and I figured other people have done worst and still made it through at an older age. I have a local diploma though, I didn't pass my math regents exam, I have always had trouble with math, this was the only exam holding me back from getting a regents diploma. I feel good because when I look at my diploma I say "I did it!, I pulled through and did it!" it may sound silly but I am very emotional about this, but at the same time I don't know if I should feel "bad" about it being a local diploma, would this hold me back from furthering my education? Would this interfere with college or anything like that? Can someone please give me some words of advice that may help me understand this?  more

Resolved Question: I don't know what do do? Help? ( Long story)?

Ok, so I recently broke up with my boyfriend. I told him we just need a break, and I want to be single for the summer. A week after i told him this, the boy I've been in love with for a year told me he likes me again. Here's the deal; Me and the boy I'm in love with... lets call him jack. Jack and I have tried dating a few times in the past, and it didn't turn out to well. We had our fights and only lasted a month. But the beginning was always great. He made me so happy. And now we're moving to a higher education, high school. So I'm hoping it will work better. More mature, new environment. But my recent ex... bob... Bob is in love with me, but I just love him ( yes there is a difference) and he would be devastated if this break turned into permanent break up. we talked about this, and he said he wouldn't hate me, but he would feel betrayed. I can't stand hurting him, and I know I'll lose him if it happens. ( we dated a year ago, broke up, became best friends, and started dating again.) I don;t want to lose his friendship, but I know I will. So here's the issue; Bob's in love with me, I love bob, I'm in love with Jack, Jack likes me. What do I do? Could you also give me a reason why to choose that boy?  more

Resolved Question: PLEASE help me, any one who does GCSE or done it please help me improve this please please please please?

Tell me what level this is, did i add lots of good sentence structuree, also tell me if i used the persuasive devises well enough, also tell me if i used thepunctuationon well. Thanks for you time. Welcome all: students, teachers and staff. Today, I am here to talk to you about an extremely important issue; we as students still have are GCSE’s to do, the government is proclaiming that there should now be 100% of examinations for all students. Furthermore the government believes we as students will do better, when we as a school will have a longer amount of time to revise, but did you know the government is doing the wrong thing, because if we had coursework we as a whole school would have been constantly revising and practising for are final exam, by doing coursework, this would build are inner knowledge even further, so when it comes to are final year eleven exam, everyone here would have done exceptionally well. Moreover there is several more reason why I strongly disagree with this proposal, why is the government putting more pressure on us, all of a sudden! Why is the government changing the law now? When we as a whole school have been improving year by year! The government considers teachers to relax, by letting them have a less work load to mark, by letting this happen, teachers will not be able to keep a track on how all students are doing, weather a student needs to improve or not, by not having the course work teachers will not be able to keep a track on how a specific students is doing. Furthermore by having course work, we will gain morknowledgege on: reading skills, writing skills and inference skills. This shows how important coursework could be to us. We as students will suffer even more by having 100% examination; the government discusses that all of us here in this very hall, will revise even more by having 100% examination, but did you know only 2 out of 5 students only revise, this clearly shows the governments is doing the wrong thing. To add to this, I had a friend, who is bright, hard working and intelligent, she had worked really hard and revised, but in her exam she got nervous, and she just panicked, and there for, her exam results wasn’t a true representation of her intelligence or knowledge. Without a doubt, I grantee, if she had coursework to help he boost her final grades, she could have got decent grades overall, which she wanted. Why are the government getting (over the top), we are just human beings, who wants a brilliant future, after our education, and we would like to leave with the best possible grades ever. So why do this now? I think this is very cruel; I disapprove of this new law. There are apparently more positives; the government claims the teacher should have a less work load to mark, with more time to spare, without any course work to mark. However this indicates that the teachers will not be able to keep a track on how a student is doing, but if we had course work, the teachers would be able to keep a track on how some students are progressing, to see what students need improving on to get a higher level. We know you teachers want the best of us. Why are they doing this horrible thing to us? As is we are like nothing to them, we need our coursework to help us, not 100% examination instead. Do you think they would like it if they were us students? No! This is unbelievable, unsuitable and a useless decision the government is making. The government wants us students to relax and not have much stress on ourselves; however everybody in this hall will have more stress, because we would need to study even harder as we would not have the other 10-40% of help to help us if we don’t do well in are final exam. Not only but also, it has been proven that 73% of all students benefit from course work, without course work you might not get the level you want. Are you still not worried, if you’re not, then you should be? Thank for your time, enjoy the rest of your day. there is paragraphs/ ow man  more

Resolved Question: I need the most of help on making this GCSE course work more better help me, need to hand in tomorrow?

Thank for your time, enjoy the rest of your day. i did not need that i finished, which is why i am asking now for improvements  more

Voting Question: Would this be an issue?

Im applying for university soon and Sheffield looks the best option for me but iv been in a relationship with a scientist who works there for a while now. He rarely mixes with the students and the course i want to do is not science related in anyway so id barely see him i reckon. Would this still be an issue? I know it is lower down education in high school and college.  more
