Children Education In China Questions and Answers

Open Question: What are the differences in raising a child in Taiwan in Taiwanese style than in American and American style?

I read an interesting article by a very close Chinese friend of mine, that was about a Chinese grandmother who visited her son and his wife and child in the US for 3 months. The grandmother was extremely surprised by the differences in how Americans [ at least Mrs. S.] raised their children compared to how parents in China raised theirs. The grandmother was so impressed by how well mannered and developed the child was at 3 years old, that she thinks that Chinese mothers should take example from American mothers. So my question is, here in Taiwan do westerners find it difficult to adjust the child rearing to accept their Taiwanese grandparents' wishes, or do Taiwanese parents and grandparents have a similar general child education method? What are the most noticeable differences between raising a child in Taiwan than raising a child in the west? What things are the most common between the western child rearing methods and Taiwanese? Whats the most annoying aspect of the Taiwanese method? What is the most positive aspect of the Taiwanese method? Any additional comments, as long as they are relevant are welcome. Anyone who wants to say anything anti-Taiwanese, anti-American/Westerner, or turn this into some pseudo-Pro-China political issue, DON'T Waste Your Time Answering. BS, G.W., etc. <Claw> Actually the tv show Super Nanny is a British tv show. And I am not saying that there aren't bad parents in the west, and I am not asking which country is better. I am just asking what are the differences. Ok everybody while I do appreciate the effort you are putting into these, especially the Taiwanese-Americans, I would like to remind you. I am Not asking which country has the better method, I am Not saying that country X is better than country B at raising their kids. I am asking for a comparative difference. So be sure to read the WHOLE question before jumping to the answer section, ok kiddos. Still thanks for the answers, keep up good work.  more

Resolved Question: Who is Cecelia Lee the Marketing Director of HOK office in Beijing?

Cecelia Lee Ms. Xiaoxi Li is a Director located in Beijing, China of Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum (”HOK“), the U.S.-headquartered architecture, interior design, engineering, planning and consulting firm. Known to the Western World as Cecilia Lee was born in the Northern part of China in 1969 under the name Xiaoxi Li. Cecilia Lee has routinely engaged in questionable, evasive and deceptive legal tactics; when she was persecuted in US court for crimes and for corrupt practices she did not show up in person in court, event not once or stepped on American soil, she was fearful of being arrested. Cecelia Lee claims that she has obtained Master Degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management (“Thunderbird”), a private business school in the United States, and the first and oldest graduate school specializing in international management and global business and another Master from Arizona State University. When she was challenged in court to produce proof of high education, she did not have any information that can support such claims. In fact, pursuant to an order of the court by which the subpoena was issued to Thunderbird School of Global Management for an order to compel the production documentations relating to Lee’s educational background, Thunderbird response dated to July 10, 2008 indicates that once upon a time in America Cecilia Lee has taken total of 15 curses of prerequisite-classes. Moreover, when she was challenged to prove fraudulent health related claims during pre-trial court hearings, Cecelia Lee provided the court with fraudulent medical records that she obtained by bribing hospital officials in China. Since 2005 Cecelia Lee facing civil charges in the United States of America on attempt to murder, make false statements, and commit perjury; false statements (2 counts); libelous posting of slanderous articles, abduction, and grand theft crime, just to name a few and in a way of example. Her trail dates not set as yet. In 2009 the 40-years-old Cecilia Lee started to prepare for her new cyber crime adventure and she recruited the 20-years-old John Travis Flynn who also known to the public as J. T. Flynn to act as her proxy to execute the “perfect cyber crime” with the help of the 60-years-old photographer, Lou Juaneza, the President of Westhoff Studios. Historical criminology has described the underworld role of Fagin-an adult who forces, seduces or teaches minors to commit crimes for him. In contemporary debates, it is sometimes feared that adolescents cunningly evade criminal law by recruiting younger children to commit offences for them. Cecilia Lee is old enough to be Flynn’s mother and Lou Juaneza, the President of Westhoff Studios, is old enough to be Flynn’s grandmother or perhaps Flynn is young enough to be Lou’s grandchild.  more

Voting Question: This is why fellow black should not date or marry interracialy?

i am not a racist and i just had my old acount deleted so this is my new one anyhow with lack of a lot of black wealth or strong role models this is why At that after ideals of imperalism and such went away starting in the late 18th century it took only another 2 centurys for these ideals to fully take affect. You can latter see that after france had a empire lasting of 600 years and after the Spanish had an empire lasting for about 900 years or longer the people of these nations felt remorse and pity for those of the opporsed, so the idea of being free tolerant and liberal or say left ideals started to come to play, at that left ideals had dominated in some early soceitys of the middle east and south central Europe but at the moment in time and throughout most of europes history espically 700b.c. and so on strong monarchys and later facist states emerged, communism was the far enemy but this to say the farthest and most radical state of the left further came into play espically in the early and to end of the 20th century and know to the still present peoples republic of china..however to say that a certain group Is dying out isn’t entirely true. Rather The # of Blacks is increasing a lot and the # of East Asian descents of people. The # of Hispanics or to say latino’s is reaching its Fullest point and estimates that South America like Europe will start to decline or be at a stand still steady.. Know to the rapid increase in Africa is not all that good but its to say that after the Europeans left and what I mean is not all Europeans sense there is present to over 500 ethnic groups in Europe but rather the domiant European countrys decided to leave Africa, the land they had cut up and divided made the tribes and sectors as you could say fight against one another..many things were also picked up some historians argue that the torture that happens to some prisoners of war in African cultures know or tribes was picked up from the belgiums who were generally known for their infatuation with torture and brutal tactics to the thousands of natives they killed and worked to death..Keep in mind africa’s population for most of history had been filled with hunter gather lifestyle and farming lifestyles, and after being under such control and that control leaving of course it would increase..however prior to the 17th century or 18th africas population had never made up a large % of the earths at all rather the largest % increase in Africa was that of the northern region inhabited by middle eastern muslims and southern Spanish Christians and some Italians..The rapid destruction of many borders by the Europeans may have all been bad but set up’s of food and their fields of food were left intact, thus in a way argicutlure kicked off even more..and this is the current trend of increase many people being born and living, the only problem is the problems with education, clean water, and disease, Africa will soon in the next century have to deal with all the children of know who will be older and will die off but not live as long as some people in japan or Europe are living, because many countries in Africa do not have the wealth or gdp or healthcare or say the quality of life to live into your late 60’ 70’ and 80’s thus when that age dies out their will be little hands in the workforce and an increased aged population..You may ask how Europe is fighting this? They increasing immigration but know are decreasing that? In Ireland and Russia measures of promoting child beahring is increasing, thousands of nationalist or Russia are having more children but this will only help so much to Russia sense men die so much more than women, due to gang violence and alcoholism and suicide..drug use atrritubted to massive amounts of drinking and of course the drug of choice is alcohol are a problem.. Know As of know East Asians make up 22% of the earths population Whites no longer make up say a 30% or up to 45% as did during roman times or the bc to the 900 b.c. they are know at 17%- 19% If you want but shouldn’t you can count Hispanics in to increase that # but those aren’t true whites Some People Belive that the rich So those holding the most money whites and Asians will hope to move from earth Perhaps to space and start a new life over were the control can be more and they can regulate who stays and who goes I mean there are not many ways to get to outer space imagine the ideal place of set up a government could wish to set up In the near future this will happen perhaps in 15 years More than likely in the next 100 THINK You pay more you get to live this great lifestyle and such But you will be monitored and only the people they want can live their BECAUSE OF THAT WHAT I dislike the most is that you always have to show pictures to show how great you guys are it takes Away Leading Black Males from the Black Community oh and i am not a racist i get a long with all people.. FOR example 70% o  more

Resolved Question: Why do you buy foreign Products here in America and hire Foreigners while American Citizens are unemployed?

My family comes here from the middle east. I am amazed at how you as a culture treat your citizens over foreigners. In my country, you get a job working anywhere, while some of our people are unemployed, you won't have your job or maybe your life very long. The workers, them self take exception to having fellow countrymen out of a job. Here, your fellow worker wouldn't piss on the best side of you if it meant keeping his or her job. Why is that? You buy foreign products over ones made here by your own people and send the money back to foreign countries that hate you and only want your money. Why? You can't sell American products in my country because the people won't buy them. So, there is no market. Here, you could sell Dog Shit to Eskimos if the price was right. I don't understand your culture at all. You let 100's of thousands of people of Mexican decent into your country to work illegally. They end up schooling their children here for free, getting Social Security for fee, and even free Medical care. Would you like to know where the Boarder Guards Uniforms are made that work along the Mexican Boarder? That's right, Mexico. They walk back and forth like a revolving door. They trash the land with human waste and garbage on their journey and your media is so worried about making one of them mad, they won't even show it on the news. I can get a job here and not even speak your language. You make it easy for me because everything is published in two or even three different languages. Why do you do this to yourselves? You Truly are an amazing culture of people but how long are you going to survive as a country if you continue down this path? Your two favorite places in all the world, McDonald's poisons you with lead paint from China. Glasses were not made here, but the media wouldn't say where they were made. Afarid of a backlash against the Chinese. When they continually poision your children, isn't it time for a back lash? What abbout good old Wallmart? Where do they get all their cheap stuff from? Why won't they release their vendor list to the public like other stores do? Could it be that there stuff is made in sweatshops overseas and they don't want anyone to know. But, you idiots shop there by the thousands and make them your number one employer in your nation. Can someone explain to me why your people act in this manner? OI have lived here now for 10 years and will be a full blown citizen in a few weeks and this is part of the culture that I never understood? Thank you for the free health care, thank you for buying my country's autos while yours go bankrupt. Thank you for the free education while your children can't get student loans becasue they all go twords the low income and minority's. Thank You!  more

Resolved Question: can someone pls help me to proofead this?? pls pls pls, tks?

Ron-Lan Shen, a lady with perfect make-up, curly hair and a white outfit. She may seem like a 40 years-old woman, but she’s actually 52 now. She is what we call a typical Korean “O-Ba-Sun” (mid-aged women). In Korea, there are over 7 million females that are over 50 years-old. That is 15% of its total population. These women are the key players for economic growth behind the scene. They are firm, persistent, doughty; and most importantly, family always comes first. Ron grew up in South of Korea, got married at the early twenties and had three lovely children, a full time housewife. Her husband franchised the largest fast food chain stores in Korea. He owned two restaurants. In 2004, Ron’s husband decided to invest a golf court in Haikou, China, with everything he owned but lost all within three years. She felt ashamed because the entire family depended on this. They had to rely on their parents financially. She was forty-six. Ron said “I have to do something for the family, no matter how tough life can be. Korean women would fight till death, and do anything in their power for their family.” April 2007, Ron joined Avon doing direct selling. It was her first job. She was very excited when she got her first salary, it was NT$75,000. She felt she’d finally achieved something valuable in her life. Korean women, including her, believed ‘family always comes first.’ Women in her generation also believed being the perfect wife is a must. Even though, she’s now making more than 10 thousand NT dollars annually, she still wakes up early to make breakfast and does all the chores by herself. To these women, being a housewife is a career, a field of expertise. They are in charge of the money, kids’ education and even their kids’ marriage. In 2006, Karen Wang who is now the GM of Avon Taiwan and Korea took over Avon Korea, which was already in debts for the past decade. Karen is good at encouraging and inspiring. She successfully turned things around; the sales expanded 124% and still increasing as of last year. Karen sees a great difference between Korean and Taiwanese women, she indicated that “Korean women are very tough, when I have a meeting with them, I can feel the competitiveness at all times. They have strong characteristics. They are born to be leaders.” Karen encouraged them. She believed in them. She believed these women are born to be a "somebody.” She believed each one of them played an indispensable role. Karen observed that most Korean women wear make-up. Taiwanese women on the other hand, not all, and some only apply lipstick only. Nowadays, appearances value a lot in Korea. And to girls, the best gift from a parent is longer a motorcycle or laptop, it is a plastic surgery. The desire of “BEAUTY.” i'm trying to translate an article, it has a pic of a korean woman in white suit. "We..." refers to Taiwanese. how do i give more pts?  more

Resolved Question: So the 13 years in which all US citizens are forced to go to school by our government is not enough K-12?

You mean to tell me all those years that I have to make my children go to school according to the US government isn't enough education for them to be able to get a good paying job here in the USA? Aside from the fact that our government has forced God out of schools and is forcing our children to worship Science, can you explain to me how more crap being fed into their brains is going to help the US economy any? The crap that the US government says is legitimate or claims to be legitimate? How is that going to put food on the table or build houses or make clothing or build automobiles or build solar panel electric units for that matter? From my understanding for any of the following to be done work must first be done and not school work, hands on work! How's our economy going to get any better when everything we have here is made in China? Someone please explain this to me in detail, because I'm really having trouble understanding!  more

Resolved Question: Anyone wants to prove read my essay about karl Marx Plz?

Karl Marx is the father of communism. In this essay “The Communist Manifesto” by Karl Marx argues that class struggles between the bourgeoisie and proletarians. Marx believed that all property should be publically owned. There would be no government, and everyone would work together for the good of the community. Thus, the society would be classless and stateless. Marx viewed life in one way that was to help those of the poor be equal to those of the rich. Marx was an ethical, creative, and influential man whose goal was to create equality for all people of the world. In the essay Marx discusses several important reasons such as, the communists' theory of history and the relationship between bourgeoisie and proletarians, the communists and the proletarians, the communists and other parties First, Marx discusses the historical materialist view of history and the relationship between bourgeoisie and proletarians. Marx makes the point that the driving force of history is class struggle. According to Marx’s definitions, bourgeoisie is owners of the means of production who live off of profits, and proletariat is people who work for a salary. He argued there are only two classes left which are the very rich and very poor and there is nothing between them. Marx said “the executive of the modern state is but a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie.” (364) Marx believed as bourgeoisies get power economically they also get more power politically. Bourgeoisies make more money every day because bourgeoisies has more connection than proletarians. The proletarians live only as long as they can find work, and they can find work only as long as their labor increases capital. They are a commodity, and are vulnerable to all the fluctuations of the market. Marx said “The bourgeoisies has stripped of its halo every occupation hitherto honored and looked up to with reverent awe.” (365) He is saying there is no integration when we have children and families make the money abuse of emotion, love and care to them. I agreed with Marx because everyone should be equal. We need to remove any relationship such as workers, boss, etc. Nobody wants to be a slave so everyone should be equal. Second, Marx explains the relationship between Communists and proletarians. Communists do not stand apart from other workers, but are made up of the most advanced political sections of the working class. Marx says that Communists have been "reproached" for desiring to abolish the "right" of acquiring private property through the fruits of one's labor. However, he points out laborers do not acquire any property through their labor. Marx said " we communists have been reproached with the desire of abolishing the right of personally……..to be the groundwork of all personal freedom, activity and independence.” (374) Marx wanted to abolish all individuality freedom, and independence. Marx argument was against the "infamous" communist proposal of abolishing the family. He says the modern family is based on capital and private gain. Communists are also criticized for their desire to abolish country and nationality. Also Marx said, “Free education for all children in public schools, and abolition of children’s factory labor in its present form.” In the communist country like China education isn’t free. If you want to go to school, you have to pay money to go to school. I agreed with Marx, education should be free. Third, Marx discusses the relationship between the Communist parties, and other parties. Marx recapitulates the immediate political aims of Communism. He identifies allied parties in various European states, noting that while communists support all working class parties, they always stay focused on the long term interests of the proletariat as a whole. Marx said, “The communists turn their attention chiefly to Germany, because that country is on the eve of a bourgeoisie revolution……..” (382) Marx was saying that Germany is the chief focus of Communist interest because while the bourgeoisie in Germany have not yet achieved victory over the aristocracy, the proletariat there is more developed than it was when either the French or English bourgeoisie won their independence. Resolved Question: Would a letter of recommendation help a Chinese friend get a UK tourist visa?

I have a Chinese friend whose employer, a university, is sending some of its teachers to a three-week training program in England. Since it is an organised group activity, she will have no trouble getting a visa. But she has a toddler whom she does not want to leave in China and wants to take this child and her husband (to care for the baby) along with her. Her husband is a gainfully employed software engineer. They both have money, education, ties to their community in China, and have no desire to overstay in UK. Would it help if I wrote a character reference letter for her husband to submit with their visa applications? I would gladly guarantee their expenses if they happened to have an accident or emergency while traveling there, but do not think that would do any good since I am not British or other European. Any advice?  more

Resolved Question: Teaching ESL in China?

I'm going to be in Hangzhou next week to begin teaching ESL to children. It's an after-school language center for children. I believe the ages to be anywhere from kindergarten through elementary. I'm not sure how much English training children receive from public education at such a young age, so I'm curious to hear some ideas from experienced ESL teachers on how to begin teaching these children. I'm thinking it would be a good idea to introduce myself and have the children do the same, maybe show some photos of where I'm from? Secondly, and in my mind most importantly, if the children are 100% non-English speaking, how in the world do I start the first class? I'm sure there may be a translator, but if not... what can I say/do in the first class that would be understandable to someone completely uneducated in the English language? What kind of game or activity could I incorporate? I've found many online, but most (even the ones for children) seem to require at least a bit of knowledge of the English language to understand the instructions. Thanks in advance for your answers! I'm not sure why the majority of answers assume that I hold no qualifications to teach English. I hold a BA in English as well as a TESL/TESOL certificate... but although TEFL/TESL/TESOL courses are a great foot-in-the-door, they do not teach you everything you need to know and it never hurts to keep learning... hence the reason for my question. The best way to learn is to ask other about their experience and suggestions. Despite the assumptions made by most of you, I have still picked a 'best answer."  more

Resolved Question: I don't know where I stand politically, what would you say fits my opinions?

I am not a political young lady it does not really interest me as some people, I'm very peaceful and accept all people. I guess I just wanted to know your opinions on where I would stand politically just in case someone asked. I wonder if there is a party for views besides the major one, I would even vote for a small party then be a hypocrite and vote just because someone is major. Okay so.. When it comes to education---I believe we definitely need to to fix our public schools, and that should be important** also we should give money to charter schools as well. They seem to function okay .It's sad that I have friends from China and they say in their schools which aren't private they learn on a higher level than us. When it comes to war- I'm Pacifist.. When it comes to different lifestyles- i'm very tolerant When it comes to abortion- I don't believe in killing that which is not a harm to you. A wild beast trying to attack yes, a child you decided to create no. I'm extremely pro - life, even extending that to animals. (Im Vegetarian) But I know when it comes to laws, I don't think a ban would stop women from killing there babies either. First, I think more funding should go into sex education and when I mean sex education I don't mean condoms and abstinence I mean full education on what sex is and showing the people the effects, because when I was in school they showed us all the diseases you can get that made me say heck no I'm not sleeping around lol. I also think programs that can show woman support and the positive effects of delivering the child or giving up the child for adoption is good. When it comes to poverty: I definitely feel not all poor people are lazy. I feel we should help the poor BUT i feel there needs to be more resources to get these people working. Not everyone is self-motivated. I know I grew up in a good neigborhood and I still went through depression because my parents worked so much they had no time. So I can't imagine how it is for a poor person. I have been to poor white neighborhoods and black and well they all have no job market there, no activity centers, If we could build more for the areas of America then it will help stop crime. Just giving a handout is covering the problem. Guns- More higher salary pay for police to control selling of guns to minors/suspicious activity. More money for cameras in neighborhoods. These people risk there lives without them putting people in cuffs we could be dead. It is so easy to get a gun nowadays. But how many people know how to use it? I do think people do need to protect themselves but I think people should go through some type of training before they own one, I have heard of tooo many stories of people accidently shooting themselves. Eco- Friendly America- I believe we should have more green concerns our country is beautiful stop polluting and cutting down so many trees for no reason. Religion-People should be able to express how they feel in school but should not force it on anyone. Peace programs-There should be more programs in churches and in schools promoting the idea of peace. Security--I agree with all the security measures happening today...should have been done a long time ago.  more

Resolved Question: Hi. Could you check my essay? spell, sentence something like that?

Watching TV is bad for children Have you ever seen television? Recently, a people can watch TV anytime and anywhere if they want. To watch TV would be both advantage and disadvantage. A good thing is that TV station has been broadcasting free education program on air. Therefore, many children, expressly school truant children, can learn education such as math and history something like that. On the other hand, a bad thing is that a lot of TV shows effects children became bad behavior. For instance, they can see seriously violence shows and heard a lot of dirty bad words from TV because there is no age limit. In this way, we can have variety of opine on abut TV problem. However I can say that watching TV is not good for children. There are number of reason why I hold on and I would express only a few primary ones here. First of all, children learn bad manner from TV shows. They can see violence and adult shows easily because they don’t need to show them identity when they watched them. After they have watched the harmful broadcast, a few youth will try mimic TV program show. For example, in the China, it was happened killing rampage. The murderer who was 10years old killed his friend because he just wanted to watch real dead body. He had been watch violence show every day before the happen. In this way, children can be affected by TV shows easily. Then, nice Relationship is broken by TV. After children come back a home from school, they spend a lot of time with family, such as they talk about today's incident to parent. However, while they are becoming absorbed in the TV, they hate to spend time with someone because they want to concentrate on watching TV. A Psychologist once expressed one interesting statistics that many school truant was spend watching TV a lot of time each days. From the statistics, we should avoid TV from children. In conclusion, a TV program has including several harmful contents. And then, there are easy to affect bad thing to children easygoing. For example, they will be non moral person or go into them shell. In this way, I can say that TV program effect seriously bad thing for children. I think parent have to restrict to watch TV from children.  more

Resolved Question: Aren't the rants and threats about health care reform by right wing nuts irrational considering...?

these anti-government geniuses didn't mind when the previous administration; 1) Focused more on oil than the intelligence warning against the murder of thousands on 9-11-2001. 2) Passed the Patriot Act that gave the government the authority to spy on American citizens by wire tapping phone calls, monitoring our e-mails, financial transactions and medical records. The government can even monitor the library books we check out. 3) Started an expensive and unnecessary war in Iraq while giving tax cuts to the rich. They borrowed money from China to pay for those tax cuts. (Tax cuts that cost twice as much as the newly signed health care reform bill.) 4) Stood proudly in front of banner that said "mission accomplished" when there were no weapons of mass destruction. It wasn't until after W's photo op that the deaths in Iraq began to rise. Actually, Iraq was a win for the oil men (and woman) who were the Bush administration. 5) They went from bin Laden wanted dead or alive to it doesn't matter where he is. (Is that a surprise since Bush acted quickly to move bin Laden's relatives out of the U.S. when all planes in the country were grounded immediately after the attacks?) 6) War means more than a decent, affordable education for our children. It means more than cancer research. And the war for oil means more than health care for the maimed and disabled soldiers who fought in that unnecessary war. 7) These are the same brainiacs that want the government to keep it's hands off of their medicare. The same ones who don't want to pay taxes but want roads, safe bridges, fire fighters and the protection of law enforcment. (Does anyone remember the collapse of the I-35W bridge in MN? A lack of funding for adequate inspections and maintence played a part in that tragedy.) These mobs with their hate, insults and threats are reminiscent of the lynch mobs from a dark time in our history. Charles Allen Wilson, and all like him, should be investigated and incarcerated in the same way that other hate groups are. It says something when a group of tea partiers cheer at being compared to mass murderer Tim McVeigh. Like I said, these folks aren't the brightest bulbs on the tree. Or, maybe they do believe in murder as a way to get what they want. http://www.nowpublic.com/world/tragedy-bush-presidency http://www.rense.com/general17/before.htm http://crooksandliars.com/susie-madrak/study-bush-tax-cuts-cost-more-twice-m http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/2002/06/05/memo/ http://www.opednews.com/articles/opedne_holly_sk_080415_tax_day_gifts_for_th.htm http://www.usnews.com/blogs/john-farrell/2010/04/01/hannitys-audience-of-tim-mcveigh-wannabes.html iris054 - The scary thing is, most of them call themselves Christians. Understand? itsa..really? captains, you must be one of those who defend the use of violence against those who want to try something different - since the for profit health care we have now is not accsessable to all. bmovies - cite your sources and I'm not sure that most anti-tax people really care if the taxes are state or federal. Resolved Question: Why does America place more emphasis on the below average students than the truly gifted students?

Those 2% of kids that will become the great doctors, lawyers, politicians, engineers, and other professionals have to deal with sub-par American education. Education here is way to easy, every since No Child Left Behind it's been about getting all children to pass their standardized tests together. What about India and China who push their students as far as they can go? We need to focus more on letting the truly advanced students reach their full potential instead of watering down everything to help all the below average students. Back in my high school a few years ago, it was all easy and simple. I finished with 100's in everything, and I guess it was because my Asian parents pushed me so hard. It shouldn't be about passing to meet standards. America needs to grow balls and realize that unless we improve education, India and China are the new superpowers.  more

Resolved Question: Do you think that there will be any change for the western society in terms of attitude?

I mean the western culture/society has long been seen as a dissapointment compared to many other parts of the world. And i feel the main reasons for this is because of things such as partying, drugs, alcohol, sex, underage pregnancy, lack of proper education etc. Whereas countries such as China, India, Japan, Russia etc have a much stricter attitude all around. For example they are taught to respect families, Get good education, be successful and the children are encouraged to do well in life. Do you think that Western Society will ever change or will it continue to stay the same?  more

Resolved Question: Isn't liberalism a predictable consequence of corrupt conservatism?

A genuine Conservative is supposed uphold the value of the free market, and yet few have anything to say about the governments involvement with corporate powers that have nothing to do with the consumer voting confidence of the people. Few speak of political greed and none about empathy. This directly affects the social order perpetuating apathy and mistrust. Many young people turn to liberalism because (and though most liberal leaders are just as greedy) they are being forced into identifying and associating capitalism with human greed due to conservative hostility, fear and con-art of words that seem to destroy their meaning almost on purpose. If the people in power really wanted what is best for this nation, they would work towards the kind of bipartisanship that doesn't assume human beings as units or members of groups and actively demonstrates individual liberty and the idea that conservatism and progressivism are both equal political imperatives and that joining any group that blindly promotes one over the other without a well defined issue to which a conservative or progressive decision is to be made is to miss the point entirely. I'd also like to know what the benefits of poverty are.. What good could come of it? Im no socialist but wouldn't it be grand if we as Americans grew up and realized our innate power and ability to cure and emancipate the people of conflict or war? That we have within us the potential to rehuminize by setting a new standard of living to which all humans are entitled. No man, woman or child deserves funding simply for having a lack of it. However when you realize money is nothing but units on a computer screen and that there are people dying and leading terrible lives all because of a lack of units on a computer screen it kind of changes the whole idea of what otto be done. Capitalism is in no way, shape or form obligated to praise gluttony or the putting of materialism and social status before humanity. If only we realized how little we would have to give up just so people can eat, have a comfortable home and have THE MEANS of supporting and educating themselves. Once all people in this freedom loving nation called The United States of America are given these basic necessities, we would see a drastic decrease in violence, crime, social apathy, greed, etc and a major surge in education, understanding, cooperation, compassion, determination and excellence. We can change how our neighbors around the world look at us (from the middle east all the way to china) just by making an effort to carpet bomb starved countries with the ridiculous (AND I DO MEAN RIDICULOUS) amount of food we waste rather bombing countries we feel home "terrorists" which are only "terrorists" because we disrespect and undermine them by setting up bases on land that doesn't belong to us. (as we have for decades now) 3000 children die of starvation each HOUR! If only they were constantly on our doorsteps crying in the excruciating pain they are experiencing even at this very moment. Perhaps then the media along with the American people would lighten up and give more than 0% of its attention to this issue. However we must focus on the problem here at home first... Foreign Policy Domestic Policy Monetary Policy EDUCATION Individual and Political Duty Government Purposes Commercial Purposes Mediocrity The forsaking of Social and Economic Freedom Social Conditioning and Propaganda The list goes on... rEVOLution anyone?  more

Resolved Question: Something we can all agree on?

America's role in the future of world supremacy is being challenged with world powers like China. All be it China will be experiencing an extreme amount of turmoil once human rights force the Chinese government to stop paying their people slave wages. This being taken into account, we must train our future generations to remain competitive in the world market place, wouldn't it be a far better investment for Obama to be working on education reform and investing in our youth than dividing the country with this extremely unpopular health care bill? I know I for one would not mind paying more taxes for our children to have a stronger and far more relevant primary education than paying for health care that threatens capitalism in the United States as we know it.  more

Resolved Question: We know the big problem is honesty in our Government! Why not vote for the honest?

If someone lies to you, they have a motive that they are hiding! If a lady friend asks her girl friend.. how do you like my hair? If you do not like it, what would an honest person say? Would it not be, "It is different?" I am tired of liars in our Government. They are the big problem! Party does not matter to much, except I do notice so many liars in one! If one has a Liberal lifestyle, they tend to lie! They are seldom into admitting any wrong choices or wrong doing. They will look for another or a thing to blame! If we buy their lies, we want them to take our guilt so we can continue in doing wrong! We are not mentally mature! The age of maturity has gone from 21 for women to 32 according to the experts. Men that are Liberal, they have not set a date! We only assume it is now 35! We are not mature until we stop making excuses for our mistakes! We blame others or some thing to try to redirect the blame. You may notice this with the Liberals some vote for. So how have their ideas and policies failed? They insisted on removing all ideas of religion except the Communist ideas. When this backfired, they blamed guns! They insisted on promoting THEIR idea of sex education on our schools, we got abortions! They could have admitted they were wrong on both, but they blames guns and then the expected child! As Americans we need to blame those who are at fault and not those who said those who were are wrong! One of the biggest lies that has carried over is that Republicans are bought by money. The truth is some are but the truth also shows most Liberals are bought! Obama shows, by his constant lying, he was bought. Pelosi does the same.. lie after lie! Maybe you should listen to those who tell you the truth! I would love to see Pelosi go against one of my lady teachers although she must of passed away by now. Age does not change facts, does it? She told us all about Communism as a History Teacher and she knew it all! She warned us about it and how they take over other nations and people. There were no lies and as I went through life, including serving our Country, I saw she was totally right on all she had said! She did not lie as does Pelosi and Obama. They got paid off by Planned Parenthood and Red China! Don't believe it.. they do have to report, do they not? They can hide things.. but one can investigate and find these facts! Who did we borrow money from? The Communists! What has Obama supported to the max since in office? Planned Parenthood! Why not grow up before it is too late. Take responsibility, that our government use to insist on, and we will be out of this! We should be the head.. the lender, not the tail, the one who borrows! The lender controls the borrower! Not intelligent is it? Earl It is exactly what the problem is.. if we see one.. we would be suspicious! He/she is out! I found one.. no names.. but he heads 12 others against the lies of Obama and Pelosi and is of same party! I was in shock! I did not know any Democrat would be honest, meaning support facts and risk all.. Note. many against the worst, and are against Pelosi and Obama! I do not care if he claimed Godhood........... tired of lies by both! Earl  more

Resolved Question: Are all chinese like this?

I live and work in China and I am married to a Chinese. The people whom I work closely with on a daily basis are really great and I am generally happy to interact with them. The majority of people in the greater population, I can't stand. Sorry to offend so many Chinese, however, from my experience, I feel that China is simply culturally inferior to most Western countries. Please don't go hurling that "well nobody's perfect" line of argument towards me. I didn't say the West was perfect or even close to it, all I am saying is that Chinese culture is much more 'less perfect' than Western culture. Here is why: 1. People are just crazy-selfish and have absolutely no sense of 'the greater good'. They are only looking out for 'me and mine', the rest can go f*ck themselves. This attitude is most evident with the plethora of product-safety scandals that have rocked the country. The latest being melamine milk that's killing babies and giving many of them kidney stones. In this instance it was 100% clear that these milk suppliers were *purposely* providing tainted milk so they could water it down and still pass the test for high protein levels. Pure evil, IMO. This is what drives the culture of corruption so evident here. For another example, just take a look at all the disproportionate number of schools that collapsed during the Sichuan earthquakes. This is because building inspectors accepted bribes from greedy contractors instead of doing their job. The result, your child is dead. 2. Purposely vague, dodge responsability. Most Chinese I interact with who haven't had a Western education or who are not my direct reports tend to dodge responsability. It is a task trying to get a straightforward clear answer from people. This is *not* a language issue as I am fairly fluent in Mandarin, and this also happens with people who are fairly fluent in English. People here just don't want to be held accountable for their (in)actions. 3. Blind adherence to authority. Absolutely no questioning or criticism of anyone higher in the authority chain. This is in line with their top-down, Oligarchical style of government. This also affects Chinese corporate culture and makes for very inefficient or just plain wrong internal management. People just don't feel free to bring up points of conflict or challenge anyone higher up in the company. I just don't see how China will ever be a leader in innovation if the culture remains this way. This is also how the Chinese family is run. What the eldermost male in the family says, goes, no ifs ands or buts. If you don't like you, you will be excommunicated from the family. Everything if made a 'Family Decision', including who you marry and what job you do for the rest of your life. Some people say Chinese families are very strong, and they are, I envy their solidarity, however there is a huge down side to this unity. 4. Absolute disregard for their environment and those around them. This is the reason for all the spitting, p*ssing and indeed sh*tting (I've actually witnessed this) whereever they want. It's absolutely revolting and I can't even comprehend how human beings, no matter how uneducated, can do this. I have seen people encourage their children to urinate on the floor right next to the table they are eating at instead of bringing them to the bathroom. I have seen someone in broad daylight on a busy street in front of a convenience store squat and take a dump. I mean, even domesticated animals know not to do this! Also the point about driving is true. Chinese, for some reason, all over the world, in their home country or not, drive like absolute maniacs. People have zero regard for basic traffic safety regulations or other people who are on the road. They also incessantly honk their horns at everything and often even at nothing. I am constantly being shocked by people honking their f*cking horns, it makes me crazy it does. 5. Arrogance and naivety. People here are so brainwashed by the government and are shielded from a lot of the negative stories that would have been broadcast about domestic issues. The result is that people rarely critisize the government and have this fantastic idea that Chinese people are somehow fundamentally more morally-sound than foreigners. If a Chinese hears about a violent rape or murder or some such evil crime happening in the West, they will say "Oh yes, foreigners are this way." and asked if Chinese do the same things say "No, Chinese wouldn't do such a thing." Also about political issues people just can't accept reality. They all consider Taiwan a part of China, despite the fact that Beijing has not a shred of control over the island. Don't even try to argue with them about it, they don't value logic and reason as useful for arriving at the truth. Wow that was a lot, glad I finally got it off my chest... btw, I could make another list about American's if you want (primarily those that live in the 'red' states). It's not that I am  more

Resolved Question: Does anyone know the status of the NASA shuttle program?

I keep hearing or seeing blips that it is shutting down after the Feb 7th launch, they are going to put over 4000 people out of a job in the Florida area. I still get a thrill out of these launches, it's an amazing feat that we all take for granted. But besides my entertainment, this seems like a very bad move. The US has lost it edge in education, business, textiles, auto industry, finances, no control over our own food supply, and now we're going to let go the last major project we had the lead on. The only major issue this country leads on is warfare. I understand the need to fight fire with fire, but does this seem a bit unbalanced to anyone? I'm expecting the traditional argument that we should focus on taking care of our own here on Earth. But there is plenty of food & resources for all, that can be used in ways so as to not destroy our planet, yet it's being withheld to gain power & money. It doesn't seem like accurate foresight to let go the last thing we have an edge on - space. The collaboration of the Space Station is an excellent example of countries working together - and apparently that almost got scrapped until international support came in. Our position in the balance of power in this world is getting wobbly. I don't think the US should have a disproportionate amount of influence, but what do we have left besides Unions, Caterpillar Inc. and Donald Trump? This was a positive forward moving project, that has been invested in and developed for decades - now it's scrap iron? I'm guessing that NASA doesn't have as many lobbyists in D.C. as China, Mexico and Russia do, looking out for their best interests through OUR Congress. If I am missing a major FACT here, not a political opinion veiled as fact, please let me know. There's enough for everyone in this world, yet with US influence getting this negative, and blindly pulling plugs on positive projects, our children and grand kids will be at the mercy of far less caring and tolerant folks in the world. Thanks for reading - what do you think? Kowalsky- I appreciated your answer -I was looking for facts. The "rant" was the side of the argument I was coming from, giving the perspective that was formulated prior to presenting the issue on Y/A. Airplanes become fatigued but they don't stop air travel, they make new & improved ones. I heard & read the Orion project is a new start up, not a continuation. is this wrong? But go easy, it's Sunday, some of us are interested in seeing others' perspectives, I like to hear the angle the question is coming from, it's the biggest part of communication - listening. Big world beyond our own cubicles. Resolved Question: If you have not yet made up your mind about illegals, read this would you?

Mexicans Have Plans for the American Southwest They vow to take it over Our southern neighbor is not shy about expressing its intention to conquer the American Southwest, which Mexico regards as territory lost in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo in 1846. Mexican children are taught in school that the United States stole that land, which they call “Aztlan.” Absurd rantings of political extremists? Consider… • In 1997, then-President Zedillo proclaimed that “I have proudly affirmed that the Mexican nation extends beyond the territory enclosed by its borders.” • Mexican American Legal Defense Fund founder Mario Obledo stated, “California is going to be a Hispanic state. Anyone who doesn't like it should leave. Every constitutional office in California is going to be held by Hispanics in the next 20 years.” People who don't like such demographic changes “should go back to Europe.” (Incidentally, Mr. Obledo was also the California Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Gov. Jerry Brown.) • Mexico's President Fox has been unrelenting in his brazen demands on the United States, starting with open borders even before he was elected. He has called for the border to be “a joining line.” His visits to the U.S. have been filled with endless requirements for Mexican citizens illegally in this country — free healthcare, taxpayer-subsidized in-state tuition for illegals at state colleges and universities, guestworker programs and amnesty for all. Incidentally, we shouldn't be surprised at such shenanigans. The world is full of revanchist fantasies, namely that some vague territorial claim from centuries before should form modern national boundaries. The Chinese invaded Tibet in 1949, with the excuse that an eighth-century marriage had made Tibet a part of China. (Is there a Chinese word for lebensraum?) Chinese flowing into Siberia argue that the Amur region is actually part of China. (More on the Chinese demographic invasion of Russia.) The Balkans have been a recent example of the power of warmed-over nationalism, when Milosovic whipped Serbs into a murderous frenzy by summoning the ghosts of the Battle of Kosovo (600 years ago) as he urged them to “take back” what had been stolen from them. In the case of the former Yugoslavia, revanchism was the excuse for genocide. Encouraged by their leaders in both countries, the 20 million Mexicans in America are similarly emboldened to insist that the United States surrender to their demands, particularly amnesty which will speed the acquisition of political power. And when California becomes majority Mexican around 2028, will those people call for political unification with their cultural homeland? Their leaders are planning for such a scenario. It's hard to fathom how America's elected Congressional leaders, those who swore to uphold the Constitution and to protect the nation, are prepared to give it away for some perceived short-term political gain, if that. The front man for globalist corporations who currently occupies the White House is allowing Mexico City to dictate America's immigration policy, while few in his party object. Does anyone think that Vicente Fox cares about what happens to America? He sees the United States as a full refrigerator and he is hungry, very hungry. Why do American public officials value so little what thousands have fought and died to protect? A foreign power has stated its plans to conquer this nation by demographic warfare, but in Washington, apparently no one cares. One wonders what Secretary of State Colin Powell thinks about surrending American sovereignty to a foreign power. He was a general in the U.S. Army and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, after all. Doesn't it bother him to be following the wishes of a foreign leader? Why does the most powerful nation in the world cower before the third-world country to the south? — by Brenda Walker  more

Resolved Question: What Donald Tsang should do to respond the public anger of 30,000 protesters in January 1, 2010?

I try to make it short to express myself more clearly about how and why Hong Kong sucked under the good for nothing, a fascist, a catholic freak, a liar, a callous man has no compassion to the aged and the kids and the poor. Why Hong Kong becomes so messy under Donald Tsang Yam-kuen's regime? You should read the SCMP.com first.http://www.scmp.com/portal/site/SCMP/ It is estimated there were between 20,000 to 30,000 protesters gathered in the Central of Hong Kong protesting about Donald Tsang is misrepresenting the Hong Kong public at large. 1) The kids were expressing Tsang's unconcerned to the poor families in which 400,000 children are living under the poverty line. They don't have a full meals every day. Many of them are needed to pick up the scraped newspapers and cartons to support their parents and frequently needed to compete or confront with another group of the aged poor. This reflects the Hong Kong social stigma of Hong Kong boasting the income per capita (estimated average of the overall HK employed) of is exceeded HK $ 43,000 per month. If so, how come so many visible poor in Hong Kong? They throw eggs into the mouth of the self made Donald Tsang, s ugly head in the public. Donald Tsang is public accused incumbent chief executive, many are cursed him to drop dead on a daily basis. 2) The main reason for this organized gathering protest is aimed for the universal suffrage for every legislator seat in the Lecgo, including the politicians in every constituency and the suffrage for the chief executive. 3) Many protestors are sought for the immediate release of Liu Xiacbo in front of the Central government liaison office of Hong Kong. 4) A small group of Tsoi Yuen Tsuen Village is opposing the government aided project of Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail. This will destroy their home-stead in the village for decades. 5) Many are protesting those so called functional legislators which are elected by the small circle voting process or simply appointed by the powerful and empowered political body. They can't recover the loss of the many investors who brought the Lehman Brothers mini bonds which is lost billions. However, Donald Tsang's relative got the first crack of full compensation from the banks almost one year ago. Is this another kind of conflict interest? Mant younger groups are demanding for better education, better health services, cheaper housing prices, more low rent public housings for the low income groups. I can foresee Hong Kong will have the never ending problem of discontent of the majority citizens. Regarless of their social status in the low, middle, or even upper ranks, they all will ask for more. Hong Kong peoples are named as typical greedy, selfish, and fear of losing or reducing the individual assets or possessions. Hong Kong government have do the followings to strip away the public angers every day. a) Cut the overall overpaid civil servants salaries ranging from 2% to 60%, depending on how much each individual is overpaid by comparing with the international pay rate standards. The liberal pension funds for the retired civil servants in 2008 is estimated ranging from HK $10,000 to $ 85,000 per month, or 66% of those retiree base salary of the last month service. What a good deal. b) Establish the universal pension fund of at least HK $ 3,000 per month to replace the present mean fruit fund of HK $ 1,000 per month. Then all those retired ordinary citizens can afford to live in this listed as the number 5 of the most expensive cities to live in this world. c) The financial think tank must put effort to burst the bubbles in the stock market and real estate. I told my nephew and niece to march on the front line in the protest. They did stay in the middle lanes al They stayed in the middles all the way. Donald Tsang Yum-kuen is being described as a lame duck chief executive and a stupid lamedbrain political leader by a few freelance writers and journalists in Hong Kong that leads a bunch of money graspers of top officials responsible for every ministry. Resolved Question: Am I wrong for these feelings of hate?

(Please read, I asked this question already in a different category but only had three responses. Thank you to the three people that answered the first time.) I have a strong hatred for men. I have no idea where it came from, I never use to feel this way. It just seems like there is a pervert everywhere you turn. They use females for their sexual pleasure. Almost everyday you read about rape and child molestation. Their minds are so perverted. They are so deceiving. You think they are so nice, then, you find out they are like all the others. For example, I remember riding my bike at age 13 and a group of men started saying the most disgusting sexual comments, I didn't understand at the time, but now, i do. Another example, i remember a time when, my 14 y/o friend and I were walking to the bus stop, a guy came up to her asking for her number, she told him she was 14, he said,"so what, I'm 19, we can make it work". We just walked to another bus stop a couple of blocks away. Domestic Violence is everywhere, it's like a style now. In Thailand, human trafficking is so high, in some countries in Africa, almost every women there has been raped. If a guy uses girls for sex he is a "GOD", If a girl does it, she is a "homey hopper" or a "slut". In some countries, still, only boys are allowed to get an education. Long ago, they had authority over women, in china there was foot binding. Who told them they were in charge? Who told them a wife must "obey" their husband? And I know what your going to say, "Not every man is like this". I know that, but so many are, it's hard to spot the bad ones. If you are wondering why my question is in this category, it is because I try to look at the problem in a "godly" way but it is just not working.  more

Resolved Question: What am I politically ? Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Liberal, Conservative or something else ?

I am politically confused. I want to where do I lean ? SO I i am going to write down the major issues and where I stand,, and I want YOU guys to decide for me based on what I write for ALL the issues and decice what am I ? Foreign Policy/Terrorism: I think we should fight Al-Qaeda and the Taliban whereve it is, and kill its members without mercy, but we should not invade countries that have nothing to do Al-Qaeda like Iraq(Hussen was a moderate muslim) or Iran(they are shia, not sunni). But I do agree with Afghanistan's mission and wish we send more troops. Israel must be supported but talking with rogue leaders should be given a chance. We also must maintain are nuclear capability and never surrende it. America should work with its allies, but it should also put pressure on them to share burdens. We should have a New World Older and help in humanitarian mission, but not take sides in a civil war. Healthcare: I think people should choose what they want. If people can afford private insurance, they should have it. If people cannot afford, there should be options for poor people. I also think government should be involved to an extent and make sure people, especially women remain slim, and don't get fat, cause we lack having thin women.Veterans should be treated with more respect, and have half price on medical costs. Also doctors cannot be sued for no reason. That must stop. There must be tort reform. Only doctors that are reckless without any regard should be sued. Education: Teachers should be paid more if they are good teachers. Period. Good teaching means the kids learn and do well in class. There should be extra help provided to students in case they don't understand the material. Critical thinking skills and logic must be taught early in a child's life to prepare them for standardized tests. Also Corporal punishment like caning should be used on parents not involved in kids education. Evolution and sex eduaction must be taught in school. Reasonable accomodation should be provided to kids that wish to pray. Gay curriculum like that penguin book is not needed in schools. Gays only need to be mentioned during Sex ed. Our budget must spend more on education and work-fare programs for those that are are not sure of college should be allowed. Gun Control: People should have whatever guns even assault rifles, BUT as long as they pass strict background tests. If people are found to be reckless, they have no business having guns. Also no hard drug users should ever have guns. Drug testing should be required. Energy: We must invest in many forms of alternative energy. Oil should not be the only one. More experimentation and exploration needs to be done. At the same time, there should be investment in Euroepan and Japanese style of high speed rail and urban transportation to Europeanize American cities. The Amtrak Acela is a joke. It's not real HSR. Real HSR means 250 mph to 300 mph. Even China has us beat on this. I am not talking about coast to coast, but regional services like in the Northeast, Southwest, Northwest, Midwest, and Southeast should have high speed rail corridors. Eminent domain must be used and protests against this should be crushed brutally. We must have more urban transportation European/Japan style transporation in other cities of America as well aside from NYC, Chicago, Boston, and DC. Economy: Capitalism and free markets shouhd be allowed but with reason. Local and small business must never be allowed to suffer.Compeition is key. A McDonalds or Wallmart cannot for example move nearby a 100 year old bar/restaraunt or a mom and pop shop . It will destroy business. There should be free trade, but CEOs cannot make indiscriminate amounts of money or cheat people to make their profits. 1 or 2 Months of paid vacaction should be allowed in workers of high skilled jobs. Crime/Judical: Death penalty should be reserved for those that commit cold, calutated, pre-mediated and heinous crimes. If a a gunman robs a shop, and kills the clerk cause the clerk grabbed his gun, that is not enough to sentence to death, life in prison is enough, BUT if the gunman ties the clerk up , after the clerk surrendered the money, and shoots, him, then the gunman should get automatic death. Child molesters(those that commit crimes to kids under 12) should be sent to work labor camps. Judges that give light sentencesd to them should join them in those camps. Immigration: There must be a large wall on the southern border due to the high crime rate. It must be large enough that they cannot cross. Coast guard must increase patrols in our water. LEGAL immigration is fine as long as people wait in line. Foreign students studying engineering or medicine with good grades that graduate with a Masters or MD should have the right to be U.S. citizens because they will contribute greatly. For unskilled workers, a guest worker program should be allowed since there are cer  more

Resolved Question: What the hell is wrong with Generation Y!?

My generation is a terrible one and I am angered at the direction the world is heading. Generation Y has the worst of everything. We are stupid, selfish, have bad education, binge drink, take far more drugs and are obsessed with sex and our social status rather than achieving anything important. Our music is terrible and focuses on sex, drugs and violence and is full of mindless techno bullshit. Doctors are already seeing signs of kids suffering from hearing loss due to Ipods and other Mp3 players, at the age of just 20. Songs like "Tik Tok" ( a song about being drunk 24/7 and acting like its some kind of achievement) by Ke$ha and Britney Spears songs like "Womanizer" are being played on shows aimed at children of the ages, 6-10 and mothers are letting their 5 year old daughters wear bikinis (wtf? (throws up in mouth). My generation is just plain pathetic and it is quite sad. How the hell are we going to conquer the trouble that climate change and global warming will bring? How are we going to fight and hopefully stop war? How are we going to prevent future events from destroying this planet with such a stupid generation coming through? I personally believe that China and other Asian countries will own everything due to the natural process of events and us "western" folks will have no choice but to work for them and we will be the inferior race. Give me your thoughts.  more

Resolved Question: College essay help, a story of my life?

1.Discuss how your family's experience or cultural history enriched you or presented you with opportunities or challenges in pursuing your educational goals. - OR - 2.Tell us a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it. Moving to Seattle from my mother’s native country of Japan was a traumatic experience for me as a five-year old boy. My parents decided to move to this country because they wanted me to be educated in English, the international language, and were confident that I would get a better education in the US. The Japanese have a rigorous academic structure, but it does not foster creativity and development of the artistic and critical mind. I am very glad that my parents made this decision for my sister and I, but I did not always feel this way. Upon my arrival, I had a very hard time adjusting without being able to speak English. The experience of immersion in a new culture, where I now looked different from many of my classmates and did not speak their language, was very stressful for me. Shortly after arriving, I became autotoxemic and was constantly sick. Even after a year in preschool, when I entered elementary school I was put in a bilingual program to improve my English. It was difficult for me to communicate in English with my teachers and classmates, and I did not begin to feel comfortable in America until the end of my kindergarten year. As I began to cope with new challenges set forth, my surroundings became very clear to me. Because of my differences, I was always a very shy young boy. Instead of conversing, I would stand in the backdrop and observe. When I reached an age old enough to understand racial differences, I felt the need to convince myself that I was somebody else. I now believe that being bi-racial, bi-cultural, and bi-lingual is a special thing, but as a child I just wanted to fit in. It was not just my Japanese background that made me feel different. All of my friends were very well off and had very nice homes, whereas my family has still never owned a home. They were all fun, loving, and exciting families, and all I saw was the color of their skin, white. I did not know why I was different, but I knew that I loathed the fact that I was. Little did I know that my diversity was shaping me into the person that I would someday be proud of. I did not experience racial teasing until I became a teenager, and did not know how to react to it. Playful racism among friends and even acquaintances developed into a frequent theme. I tried my best to play along and not feel offended because after all, only half of me was being laughed at. Yet somehow I was getting the impression that I was perceived as a lesser human being. I have slowly moved away from those who think different of me because of my racial representation. I have been successful in American culture, being a good student, playing sports, and having a wife circle of friends. I teach chess and soccer to children, and am active in student government. My experience in two cultures has helped me in working with children from a variety of backgrounds. I am now very happy that my parents brought me to the United States. And yet, when I traveled independently to China and Japan this summer, for the first time I felt like I belonged. Although I was in Hong Kong where the majority speaks Cantonese, the cultural difference did not alarm me as it did when I first came to America. I quickly became enamored with the beauty of the Asian culture infused with the effects of British colonialism. I wanted to embrace the culture as my own, become a part of its inner-workings. In Tokyo as well, I sensed the same sort of acceptance that I longed for back in the states. I met a number of brilliant, successful, and genuine people that helped me to find what I was searching for. My entire life I had been contemplating the reoccurring question of whether or not I was accepted for my racial differences, when in fact all I desired was for acceptance of myself as a contributing member of this society. What do you guys think?  more

Resolved Question: This government has spent record amounts of money on education. Why do they bother ?

Britain has some of the worst rates of numeracy and literacy in Europe. It is not lack of investment in Britain but the lack of the correct attitude. In countries like China children can be taught in classes of more than 100 because they DARE NOT MISBEHAVE. Children probably learn more in much poorer countries with little equipment because they have discipline drive and motivation. In countries like Chile if you arrive late for school you are sent home and your parents summoned and the parents dare not abuse the teacher in any way. Literacy rates in countries like Cuba are far higher than here. Britain has to compete with the world now. Surely we need a complete change of outlook ? fily.....i knows wot yer means. Resolved Question: Who could help me revise my personal statement?

This is a personal statement for applying to the UC. It is very important. Can you help me revise the sentences and grammars? I would appreciate it! I am a typical Chinese new generation. I love sports, especially basketball. I had won numerous sports competition prizes during my schools. I summarize myself as an ambitious young man who is making progress and who is willing to contribute to the society. My life can be characterized by three transitions. I passed into a Key Middle School in China. I enjoyed the study and sense of achievement through competition. With my outstanding academic performance, I was recommended for admission to the high school; it was the highest academic honor for a Chinese student. The first transition occurred in high school; I found the study was getting dull gradually, and I wondered why I hit the books through the night and morning. I was tired of this and wanted to drop out to start my own business, but I couldn’t; on one side, education seemed the only way out for me in Chinese doctrine; on the other side, I was under the pressure from both the school and family; I had used to be the best student, so they all placed high expectations on me; therefore, I was on the horns of a dilemma; confusion and depression were writhing around my heart; this was my toughest time. However, under the constant enlightenments by my families and teachers, I realized education was the basic for anyone who wanted to do great things, so I held on to graduation. Afterwards, I was assigned to a 2-year vocational college with no other option, and I experienced the second transition. Although I still wasn't interested in the outmoded teaching style, I wasn't as depressed as in high school because I realized I couldn’t change the circumstances but could change myself. I shift my focus to social activities. I studied economics by paying close attention to it and by doing some internship; I acquired some certificates of English skills by self-study; I started my housing business by subleasing apartments to people who needed short-term lease. This was a harvest time. After college, I took various jobs: salesman, foreign trade merchandiser, and marketing manager. Mostly, I established a successful online store. Although I had left it for quite a while, I still felt it was like my child because we had experienced too much which could only be known and understood by myself; the third transition was derived from it. After half-a-year operation, I realized an online store could not be my destination, I needed to explore a higher space and self, and the best way was further education. Although I had earned much money, one thing never left my mind: doing good things. Money is important, but I want to contribute to the society even more. I believe in “more power, more ability”. I hired needy classmates to my business, and they are still working there regardless of the financial crisis; I donated to the earthquake and charities; when I am in DVC, I took money from my own pocket and built a website (http://www.dvchelp.com/) where student can ask and answer questions regarding their academic and social life. Although I didn’t get support from school and encountered some technical barriers, I never gave up, because the virtuous nature of it encourages me to cling on to it. I am now more aware of what I am doing than ever before, so I regained my academic summit getting perfect GPA in DVC. I pursue the best education because this will push me to a higher level at which I would be able to do some great things in the future.  more

Resolved Question: Has birth control and family planning led to the slowing down of growth rate and became the social norm today?

Do you think reasons like birth control, natural disaster, family planning, laws, kids being too expensive and infertility has led to the slowing down of the growth rate so that it has become the modern economic and social norm today? I mean there's a faster than predicted decline in birth rate across the world, a lot of improvements in family planning and basic education across the world and even China's one child policy. But then again Statistics are LIES Census are probably inaccurate. So has it become a modern economic and social norm to have less children these days?  more

Resolved Question: I'm sick of it!!!??>><<..,,;;''[[dfsfasfasfasf]]?

Sorry about that... well my grandma (paternal) and my aunts/uncles always put my cousin(girl) down. my aunts/uncles grandma are always saying i'm so smart, good, etc. The only reason they do this is my dad is the older child and because he's male also because I'm from canada and my cousin is from china(lol, it's in china). My cousin taught me everything I know even though her education is much more strict than mine. I love her to death but my older relatives are always putting her down and I want to say something but in china it's not very easy to tell your elders what to do and it's very very annoying and unkind! I hate it but what can I do!?! I really want my cousin to be happy but she is very UNhappy when they do this and I hate seeing her like that. It's just the way people are, she's naturally uncurious and I'm naturally super curious but they make it out as a bad thing...-_- srry i'm ranting... How do I get them to stop? I don't really care if I'm not on such a high pedestal. I never like attention much...^^  more

Resolved Question: What are the advatages to a raising a child in China & America?

I am engaged to a wonderful Chinese person, and we are thinking of having a baby within the first year or two of being married. However, now we are having a dispute with the parents (both of ours) as to where we should raise our child/children. My parents want us to raise them in the US and my future mother-in-law wants them to be raised in China. There are a lot of good arguments for both. However, we are still not sure on a good solution. I thought that we can raise them half in China, half in the US allowing them to experience culture and have education in both countries and systems. Does anyone have any good advantages or good (non-politically bias) arguments for raising them in either country. I am sorry but I guess I will need to expand on this, please no racist, or ignorant answers please. This is a serious issue that I am facing, and I was hoping for serious answers from people who wont say things like "your kid will probably be working in a factory making his/her own." I can speak Chinese, but I am not fluent. I have been studying Chinese since I was in High school, and recently passed the advanced level of the HSK (proficiency) test. So being able to live in China is not much of an issue, especially since we are thinking to live in Hong Kong and they speak a high level of english.  more

Resolved Question: What are the advatages to being born in China & America?

I am engaged to a wonderful Chinese person, and we are thinking of having a baby within the first year or two of being married. However, now we are having a dispute with the parents (both of ours) as to where we should raise our child/children. My parents want us to raise them in the US and my future mother-in-law wants them to be raised in China. There are a lot of good arguments for both. However, we are still not sure on a good solution. I thought that we can raise them half in China, half in the US allowing them to experience culture and have education in both countries and systems. Does anyone have any good advantages or good (non-politically bias) arguments for raising them in either country. Thank you every one for the answers. I know that the final decision where our child will be raised is my fiancée and mine, however we are dead locked on the pros and cons of the choice. I personally don't have much preference, because I am sure they will grow up well in either environment as long as we teach them and care for them properly. People who say that it is a hard to adjust to changing your life after moving from one country to another for school, is partially correct. When I was a child I grew up in the US went to American school and when we went to in Ohio, when I was in 5th grade my parents moved to Taiwan for my fathers job, my 2nd year of High School we moved back to the US for the last 1 1/2 year of HS. I admit that it was a little difficult because I didn't speak Chinese and the food was strange, but after 6months I learned some basic Chinese after a year I was speaking Chinese, by High school I was taking actual Chinese lessons and speaking conversationally with the people around me. So I understand changing cultures and moving back, and I think it was better for me than staying stuck in one country. At the same time it was a little harmful because I didn't have real long term friends to grow up with, and reintegration into the American life was a little hard because I liked TW more. PLEASE SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY! Expamples of non-serious answers are "In China your kid can learn the ancient Chinese art of Land Grabbing and will and will make a great career as Realtor" Which is boarder line racist leaning more on the racist side. "In China your child gets to see Cultural Revolution and the way the revolution promotes peace and harmony, in US he doesn't." Which is some nationalist political irrelevance. Please I am seeking real information and real answers from serious people. Thank you  more

Resolved Question: What is a good name for a political party?

Here are my beliefs A.Healthcare •Every American should have affordable health care. America is the only democratic, developed, and wealthy nation on this earth that doesn’t provide health care for ALL its citizens. Today, 47 million Americans are uninsured and 8 million of those are children. This should be unacceptable. Through President Barack Obama’s Health Care Bill, we will achieve the healthcare crisis that is literally strangling the life out of Americans. B.Energy and Environment •The biggest crisis in the history of this man is occurring right now. Because of our skyrocketing carbon emissions since the Industrial Revolution, global warming is occurring, which has and WILL wreak havoc on the earth. Because it is unprofitable for businesses to implement energy reform, the United States must provide incentives for businesses to use “Green” technologies. The United States must also provide a minimum fuel mileage for all US cars, which would not only help the environment but help US auto makers to reform. C.Foreign Policy •Strong relations with Europe must be continued as well as trying to strengthen relations with Russia and China. The United States also must continue to support Israel, but not without alienating the rest of the Middle East. The US cannot support Israel with weapons, but more or less our moral support for lack of better words. D.National Security A plan to withdraw COMPLETELY all American troops from Iraq in one year must be drawn up and implemented. American ground troops must be removed from Afghanistan because the terrorists are not the entire country; they are in the mountains. Strike teams must be drawn up to kill the terrorists. E.Civil Rights and Liberties Gay Marriage must be legalized in the form of a Constitutional Amendment. A voucher system for schools in America would increase the quality of education for all in America. Parents would choose where there child went to school (private or public) with a government voucher. A free market would be created of the school systems, increasing education for all. F.Science and Technology •Stem Cell research must be government subsidized thousands of times what it is now. I also support abortion fully and completely. G.National Debt •To help bring in government revenue, prostitution, gambling, and marijuana needs to be legalized across the country. Taxing the hell out of it would help make a significant dent in the national debt. The three of them are not legalized across the country and are burgeoning industries that make billions together. I was thinking "The New Federalist Party"  more

Resolved Question: What is the kindest thing to do in Africa?

Africa is about to break 1.0 billion people later this year. Population is headed for 2.0 billion by the year 2047. At the same time the "more developed countries" are at population 1.22 billion and will be 1.26 by the year 2047 (a mere 2.86% in 38 years). ------------------------ Right now the "dogs of war" are killing millions of people in Africa. A land where more than 40% of the people don't have access to drinkable water, let alone food. Who knows how many will die daily as the population keeps on exploding? It may make the death rate of the black death look like child's play. -------------------------- Have you ever read about the famines in China from about 1959-1962? The combination of people who starved, and those not born because of the horror resulted in a death toll worst than WW2. This was the greatest famine known to history. We are probably facing these kind of famines on a regular basis. -------------------- What is so dreadfully wrong about mandatory sterilization of males? Which is more cruel, the loss of some basic reproductive rights( a basic human right) or millions of babies dying from diarrhea. -------------------- African births are at about 95K per day with deaths at 33K, Births in the developed world are at 36K per day with deaths at 35K. -------------------- Don't say we need sex education or better access to condoms. People can't change their thinking that fast. It will only put a small dent in the births. When China began their program in 1979 they thought that there should be two children per family, but they quickly realized the only way to stop the growth was to go to one child per family. There were too many women of child bearing age. ---------------- We are facing catastrophe. A potential level of death unseen to mankind in history. The population in China increased by 13 million in 1979. The increase dropped in 1980 and 1981 as the initial push was drastic (and cruel), but then it soared to 19.2 million by 1987, not returning below 13 million until 1993. It is currently at 8.5 million and is not expected to drop for another decade. ------------------- Population is expected to peak in the year 2032 before it begins to decline. That is 53 years from the start of the program until population growth levels off to zero. AND THAT IS WITH A ONE CHILD PER COUPLE POLICY.  more

Resolved Question: can u summarize this for me?

Women’s Rights The fight for women's legal rights gained ground in the nineteenth century in western Europe, the United States, and Canada, and in many other areas of the world. Historically, while matriarchal societies had existed in some areas, such as southeast China (the Mosuo) and in South Bougainville near New Guinea and Australia (the Navogisi), patriarchal societies dominated most of the world and continue into the twenty-first century to be the predominate social structure worldwide. Women have, historically, held less economic and political power compared to men. One of the turning points in the women's rights movement occurred when voting rights became widespread in western Europe and North American democracies from the late 1800s to the 1920s. With voting rights came some economic rights, such as the right to inherit and manage property, to work and earn wages or profit, and to associate freely in public for business. Women's rights groups in the second half of the twentieth century focused on greater legal equality in terms of wages and credit, reproductive rights, family law, and education. Women's rights advocates have focused on legal change in societies where the rule of law is an appropriate avenue for enforcing women's rights (rule of law, briefly, is a legal system with clear and evenly enforced rules, including laws about property rights and enforcement of contracts). In many instances, however, legal rights do not translate into actual rights if enforcement of law is not upheld. For example, honor killings—the murder of a female in a family by male relatives after the woman takes action that the family believes is dishonorable—are outlawed by secular law in many countries, including Iraq, and yet cultural and religious practice allows for such killings. In Iraq, the penalty for honor killing is three years imprisonment, but the vast majority of honor killings go unreported and unpunished. In contrast, in countries where laws against honor killings are strictly enforced, high-profile honor killings committed by Muslim families result in strict punishment. A German Muslim man convicted of killing his sister for her “Western” lifestyle was sentenced to nine years, three months, while in Britain a grandmother was sentenced to life in prison in 2007 for committing an honor killing. Honor killings are rare in societies where the rule of law enforces penalties, and where women's rights groups are highly active. The focus on women's rights under the law involves changing legal practices but also social and cultural norms in all cultures. In sub-Saharan Africa, women in many cultures are treated as minors culturally if not legally, with little or no right to manage or inherit property. In Bhutan, voting rights for women are legally possible, but under the law one vote per household is permitted, and the vote goes to the man under cultural practice, effectively denying women the right to vote. In China, single mothers are permitted by law to maintain custody of their children, but in order to obtain a residency permit and enroll children in school, the woman will need a man's assistance. Local women's rights groups in various regions worldwide work from within each individual culture to change cultural and social beliefs and norms, while at the same time changing laws. Religion plays a strong role in many women's rights issues. The right to an abortion, for instance, is restricted in strongly Catholic countries such as Chile and Argentina. Freedom of movement in public is constrained for many women in Muslim countries; in Saudi Arabia most women are not permitted to drive. In Malaysia lawmakers considered restricting a woman's right to travel overseas, requiring permission from family and/or employers as a condition. This 2008 measure provoked intense criticism from Malaysian women's rights groups, who claim it is based on the belief that women are less capable of making independent decisions than are men, a belief some charge is rooted in Islam. Limited inheritance and property rights are a primary target for women's rights advocacy groups, which aim to expand a woman's right to inherit property from late husbands and to manage family businesses. In many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, widows have very few property rights. In Saskatchewan, Canada, widows in the Sakimay First Nation have also experienced a loss of property rights with the death of a husband. A 2004 report related one Sakimay widow's experience: she was evicted from her home on orders of the band's chief on the grounds that, as a widow, she was no longer a member of her husband's band and therefore had no property rights. The United Nations Millennium Goals—a series of goals designed to reduce poverty, hunger, disease, and maternal and infant mortality by providing better education for children, equal opportunities for women, and moving toward a healthier environment by the year 2015—has as its third in a set of eight  more

Resolved Question: can some one check my grammar..please?

It is often a very worrying matter to see that world’s population is increasing immensely, despite its size. Especially countries like China, India and Japan are well-known countries that consist of higher number of populations. It is understood that over-population would always lead to have adverse effects, experts reveal that over-population may result higher level of pollution in air, water and soil. These circumstances have occurred due to the lack of education among the people. To tackle the menace education should be provided from every possible source that makes direct communication with the people around the world. For the younger children television cartoons could convey the message and for the teenagers part of school education could be allocated to address the issue. If possible governments should provide scholarships to elected individuals to do more research on the problem. Governments and other law making bodies should hold as the initiating bodies to tackle the menace. This can be done by imposing higher taxes or may be imposing fines on people that are hoping to make large family units within their homes. On the other hand small family units could be given benefits i.e. tax deductions for some selected expenses. While concentrating on the amount of members in a single family unit, other laws also should be in to practice to gain control over the problem. This could be more applicable to the countries with higher population figures already. Laws such as prohibiting smoking in public, imposing well monitored sanitary standards on households and free distribution of brochures which broadly address the matter. Though it looks like a hard task to educate the public in relation to over-population. This has to be done without any delays before this world could face traumatic events over the years to come.  more
